Trump Says Suspected Saudi Killers Are Getting the Kavanaugh Treatment: Reason Roundup
Plus: Canada legalizes weed!

What do Brett Kavanaugh and Saudi leaders have in common? For one, the president would have us think that neither has gotten fair play from U.S. media. On Tuesday, Trump told the Associated Press that the suspected Saudi-sanctioned murder of a regime-critical journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, was just another case of assuming culpability too quickly.
"Here we go again with, you know, you're guilty until proven innocent," said Trump from the White House. "I don't like that. We just went through that with Justice Kavanaugh, and he was innocent all the way."
A mounting body of evidence in the Khashoggi case says otherwise. Earlier this week, Saudi sources had hinted that Khashoggi may have been killed accidentally after entering the embassy in Istanbul on October 2 to pick up paperwork related to his impending marriage.
Crucial to being an honest adult is apologizing when you're wrong.
I said that Trump would drop the pretense about caring about the presumption of innocence and due process after Kavanaugh. I was wrong.https://t.co/tNNxcKjzjw

But Turkish authorities announced yesterday that audio from inside the embassy suggests Khashoggi was killed just a few minutes after he arrived, not during the course of an interrogation gone awry. They say that he was beaten up, drugged, and killed before his body was dismembered. In the audio from the consulate, "the voice of a man Turkish authorities identified as Saudi forensic specialist Salah Al Tabiqi can be heard recommending other people present to listen to some music while he dismembered Mr. Khashoggi's body," says The Wall Street Journal.
Turkey has pinpointed five suspects, including one who "was a frequent companion of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman—seen disembarking from airplanes with him in Paris and Madrid and photographed standing guard during his visits this year to Houston, Boston and the United Nations," The New York Times reports. Three other suspects "are linked by witnesses and other records to the Saudi crown prince's security detail," while the fifth suspect "is a forensic doctor who holds senior positions in the Saudi Interior Ministry and medical establishment, a figure of such stature that he could be directed only by a high-ranking Saudi authority."
If these suspects were indeed involved, it "would undercut any suggestion that Mr. Khashoggi died in a rogue operation unsanctioned by the crown prince," notes the Times, which also "confirmed independently that at least nine of 15 suspects identified by Turkish authorities worked for the Saudi security services, military or other government ministries."
The Saudi prince and his father, King Salman, have denied having any inside knowledge about Khashoggi's disappearance and alleged death. After meeting with them yesterday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters, "I don't want to talk about any of the facts and they didn't want to either."
At Al Jazeera, Saudi journalist Hana Al-Khamri explains why Khashoggi so triggered and threatened Prince Mohammed:
MBS perceived Jamal Khashoggi as a serious threat to his authority for several reasons. First of all, Khashoggi was not a Western analyst or commentator, so the regime could not dismiss his criticisms as a foreigner's smear attempts. Moreover, he was not only a Saudi citizen but also - unlike many Saudi opposition figures who were forced into exile decades ago and have since been detached from the Saudi society - was a prominent member of the Saudi society and establishment until very recently. He had worked in local newspapers for years, was once a trusted adviser to the monarchy and was even settled in the kingdom until last year. As a result, in the eyes of many Saudi citizens, Khashoggi was one of them - someone who loves and wants the best for his country. His image as an establishment insider who is trying to change things for the better gave him an unprecedented credibility and influence among native Saudis. Furthermore, his close links to the members of the old establishment, who are discontent with the direction MBS is taking the country, has long been a cause for concern for the crown prince, who appears to be very cautious about a possible coup d'etat attempt.
Those who've long been critical of Prince Mohammed, his alleged reform goals, and Saudi atrocities in Yemen, seem bitter but hopeful that Khashoggi's death has "accomplished what 50,000 Yemeni deaths could not"—that is, force U.S. businesses, mainstream media, and politiicans to pay attention to and condemn Saudi government abuses.
"Though long overdue, these condemnations of the Saudi government are welcome," writes Shireen Al-Adeimi, continuing:
Saudi Arabia has been a close U.S. ally for decades, but during that it has engaged in numerous violations of human rights including creating what is currently the world's worst humanitarian crisis. For over three-and-a-half years, Saudi Arabia has been waging a brutal attack on its poorest neighbor, Yemen, causing the killings of as many as 50,000 people and the silent deaths of an estimated 113,000 children who have perished from malnutrition and preventable diseases like cholera. By using starvation as a weapon and causing the collapse of the Yemeni economy, health care and educational systems, Mohammed bin Salman has proven himself to be a ruthless monarch, and not the progressive reformer that many in the Western press have, until very recently, been happy to paint him as.
America's allyship with Saudi Arabia "cannot be casually severed," yet "the White House should have been first to suspend participation in a major investment conference in Riyadh next week until the Saudis provided a credible account of Mr. Khashoggi's fate, rather than leaving it to American media organizations and business executives to take the lead in pulling out," suggests The New York Times editorial board.
If Saudi Arabia is allowed to get away with some lame story about the apparent murder of Mr. Khashoggi, the world's growing gang of autocrats will feel even less constraint. There are plenty of measures at Mr. Trump's disposal that would send the right message, from personal sanctions against those behind the Khashoggi operation to a suspension of arms deliveries to Saudi Arabia. Mr. Trump's aides, members of Congress and allied leaders need to insist that he take the lead in demanding that Saudi Arabia acknowledge what really happened, and why it's terribly wrong.
But Mihir Sharma at Bloomberg suggests that all this anti-Saudi bluster is just for show, and will die down once the spotlight does.
"The Saudi government's flagship investor event—'Davos in the Desert,' as we're apparently supposed to call it—seems under threat after a series of high-profile withdrawals," notes Sharma. "Yes, nobody might want to take the risk, right now, of hanging out with the bad guy of the moment. But the larger idea behind the informal boycott of Davos in the Desert is what—that we are going to somehow isolate Saudi Arabia from the global economy? That's not going to work as long as the country remains is the world's largest oil exporter."

Hello.
Trump is right. Calm the fuck down and see what's up.
Like everything in the Arab world, it's never the first layer you should react to and yet this is precisely what those who hate Trump are doing. Dude was allegedly part of the Muslim Brotherhood who are at odds with the House of Saud. And if there's one thing the Saudis hate it's people treading on their racket.
If you call on Trump 'to do something' you basically demand Canada and other Western countries who have ties and do a lot of trading with Saudi Arabia to do the same.
Back off I say. None of our damn business. And adding this bull shit about 'human rights' to it is laughable as it is cynical. This stuff has been going on for decades in that part of the world.
Like everything in the Arab world, it's never the first layer you should react to
It's all shifting sands over there. Honorable shifting sands.
Exactly, Even the foundation is not firm.
So when I see American and Western pundits righteously react in a zero-sum manner I laugh at their simplicity. Especially the ones who know better but do it anyway. They're the worst.
Those pundits are a little people, a silly people.
'He won't cut ties with Saudi Arabia! See!? We told you Trump is a genocidal maniac!'
And these people get PAID to write irresponsible garbage like that.
See that jerk off at WaPo yesterday whatever his name was.
Its mostly propaganda to further the narrative.
Makes perfect sense when we admit media opinions are mostly propaganda.
We need to do something, though! Otherwise the Arab Spring will be for not. Look how much better off Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya are. We need to spread democracy!

To be fair, Reason has long questioned the relationship with Saudi Arabia. That said, most of the media seemed to forget about the country for around 8 years before Trump. Prior to that, they loved pointing them out as evidence of Bush's hypocrisy.
However, it is surprising to me how little context Reason and the Media are giving to Saudi Arabia. Yes, they are a brutal country. However, the current leader is trying to liberalize the country, which is destabilizing a lot of old institutions. The last country to do this was Iran, as far as I can tell, and that didn't go well. You would think that Reason would call that out.
This seems pretty similar to the whole Pinochet news cycle, where his every brutal crime was set at the feet of America, with no credit for what he did to give that country some level of freedom from the marxists.
Trump can't intervene. He's being prudent as proper.
The people who shouted he'd start world war III what him to cause unnecessary friction with the Saudis (there will be a time and place to discuss the matter) and spark a war with Russia over some bull shit on Facebook.
Who are the retards here?
Reason has long questioned the relationship with Saudi Arabia
But is this the first time it's implied that there should be sanctions?
Aside from that, as I understand it the Turks are not a disinterested party. So anything they have to say should be vetted carefully.
Yes. If what we are reading is true, it wouldn't surprise me that this guy was killed by SA. He was an agitator for the Muslim Brotherhood. They and and the Edrogan government are both trying to get the middle east aligned around a religious Muslim government. Meanwhile, the current Saudi regime is moving more towards secular.
Obviously, Saudi Arabia shouldn't be in the habit of murdering people in cold blood. But the media shouldn't be in the habit of making it seem like Saudi Arabia has declared war on journalists. They are in the midst of a cold civil war between the religious hard liners and secularists. There have been hundreds of these hard-liners lined up against the wall and shot over the last year, and no one has cared. That he happens to be a journalist is the only difference.
The sad thing is that most people would shrug if this context were given. Instead the media is happy to reframe the truth into some moral story about Trump's hostility towards the media.
And Reason better lay off that reframed narrative.
And adding this bull shit about 'human rights' to it is laughable as it is cynical. This stuff has been going on for decades in that part of the world.
Oh so human rights violations become okay if you keep doing them forever. That's cool.
Not the point of the comment.
Point is there have always been human rights abuses in that part of the world where pundits pick and choose which ones they will be outraged about.
It was not a statement of 'being okay' about it but rather to point in this case it's disingenuous to point out human rights abuses given the reality of Mid-East politics with regards to human rights abuses.

This one has an inauthentic feel to it.

Roseanne Barr has objected to the way her character has been written out of The Conners, a spin-off show to her cancelled self-titled sitcom.
You dont hear much from the media bout Rosanne anymore. You also dont here much about falling ratings of new spin off.
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
Picking up three weeks after Roseanne's sudden death, the show's first episode reveals the family matriarch died from an accidental opioid overdose. In a statement, Barr said this "lent an unnecessary, grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show."
"She *should* have died in an interrogation gone wrong."
Or from the Nazi antifa bashing her brains in to silence her 'racism'.
Or a " mugging gone bad".
Like many stand up comedians who get their own shows, Roseanne's character was based on her. Killing the character off by drug overdose is a bit of a cheap shot.
Didn't Rosanne say her tweet mistake was under the influence of Xanax or something? Seems like her dying from drugs might be as realistic as they can make it.
It's pretty classless what they did to her character. Why did they have to kill her off like some junkie instead of just making her die in her sleep and move on? The writers kicked a woman while she was down it seems to me.
She made that cast and that show. Without her most there don't have a job. It's pretty galling no one came to her defence - besides Goodman I hear. Metcalfe and Gilbert are riding a wave Roseann made. Not impressed.
ABC, I have to think, probably regret over reacting like they did.
It's ROSEANNE. Not The Conners.
For that matter, it wasn't really necessary to "kill" her at all. The character's children are all grown up and could be portrayed in their own households. Back in the day when they did spinoffs of All In The Family (and spinoffs from spinoffs!) each show was it's own self-contained entity. They didn't need Carroll O'Conner for The Jeffersons.
I never cared for Roseanne the person or the show but she was mainly the reason people watched that original show.
Wow, from the complex situation in Crimea to the intricacies of pop-culture there's little you're not qualified to illuminate. Salient point.
I think the show just debuted last night. My guess is that the ratings will fall off quickly but who knows.
This was obviously how the writers were going to deal with her character's departure. If Barr was smart she would have made her severing ties with the show contingent on them not killing off her character.
Having her die is one thing. Having her die of a drug overdose is making it personal. Especially with autobiographical origins of the character.
In fairness, the addiction to painkillers was a storyline last year, so it was in keeping with what Barr was writing herself.
"I think the show just debuted last night. My guess is that the ratings will fall off quickly but who knows."
A commercial for the show came on (and I didn't realize it was the former Roseanne show). I told my wife that even the commercial for the show looked horrible. She, then mentioned that it was the "new" Roseanne show.
It won't last long if the commercial was an indication of the quality. It wasn't remotely a comedy. More like a family drama without any kind of charm or wit.
We wont ever find out the details because when the show flops, the media execs will never admit they made a bad decision.

Yeh, Canada is not on a good track with that sort of stuff. We prop up places like Scandinavia and Holland for the wrong reasons.
Some of these government actions seem like letting all criminals out of jail to get some votes for your failing political party. It will get worse.
Yeah that doesn't have "perverse incentives" written all over it
But only backward people oppose this brave new world of euthanasia.
From a "how you view the world" perspective this actually makes sense.
The underlying moral framework of the sort of socialist end of the political spectrum is group ownership. Things are done for the common good. Standing in the way of things that are for the common good is immoral. Things that promote the common good are moral.
This is how they arrive at "being rich" is wrong and unfair. This is how they arrive at healthcare, housing, education, etc. should be free (as in 'paid for by someone else')
In that moral framework it isn't a great leap to "the body of someone who died is community property", particularly if that body can help the common good. Transplanting the organs of all potential donors by law would be a great blessing to the common good. And since you didn't really have any right to keep them after you no longer need them.....
And that's your very quick journey to "the state will decide when viability ends and harvest such organs as it sees fit" being the correct and moral position.
Of course the other extreme - the libertarian "I own my body" position - might acknowledge that transplanting the organs would be a good thing for the recipient and for public health overall, but still oppose any unauthorized taking of body parts, even after death, on purely moral grounds.
The libertarian view on euthanasia is that allowing it increases self autonomy. The problem is most of the other people who want it do not really respect self autonomy all that much, and they get control on the "who decides" question.

It's amazing if the purpose of all this is to make, "businesses, mainstream media, and politicians to pay attention and condemn".
It seemed to me that they wanted us to cancel arm sales to and introduce sanctions against Saudi Arabia, and if that's what you want to do, you need to do a whole lot more than show them to be guilty of a murder. You need to explain why canceling arm sales to Saudi Arabia and hitting them with sanctions is in the best interests of U.S. security.

Oh, and in this part, "Those who've long been critical of Prince Mohammed, his alleged reform goals, and Saudi atrocities in Yemen", what do you mean by his "alleged reform goals"?
Are you talking about how Prince Mohammed stripped the religious police of their powers so they can no longer ID, detain, or punish women for how they dress or for any other reason? Are you talking about how Prince Mohammed allowed women to drive and attend sporting events for the first time? Are you talking about how Prince Mohammed threw radical Imams in prison for resisting reforms giving women more freedom, for instance, to be in mixed groups of men and women who aren't related? Are you talking about Prince Mohammed's reforms allowing movie theaters in Saudi Arabia for the first time?
The people who are critical of these "alleged" (nothing alleged about them) reforms are also critical of Saudi atrocities in Yemen? Why aren't those atrocities also "alleged"? Who are these critics? Do you have a link to what you're talking about?

Iowa City: Woman Charged After Detonating Plastic Explosives In Cheating Husband's Anus
It is alleged that the woman inserted the plastic explosives into the anus of her sleeping husband, before detonating them remotely. Investigators found a webcam in the debris which they believe she used to watch her husband explode.
The husband died instantly in the explosion which was loud enough that a neighbor in a nearby house called 911, leading investigators to the gory scene. The woman's name is being suppressed until the man's next of kin have been contacted.
When a woman asks you whether her jeans make her look fat, the correct answer is "no".
The correct answer is: Your fat ass is making those jeans huge. Stop blaming it on the jeans.
How do you pound that much c4 into a guys ass without waking him up?
Per the article, sleeping pills.
But beyond that, it wouldn't take "that much" C4 to kill you from that location.
Cause of death: Massive hemoroidhage.
I think that one was a hoax
Good Lord!
That has to be a spoof.
That's a parody article written for Halloween. Yeah. That's what it is. Maybe it is a movie tie-in. Right?
I inserted plastic explosives deep up my gf's ass - oh wait, that was my tongue.
You ruined it.
STEVE SMITH wouldn't even go that far.
NO ONE TELLS STEVE SMITH HOW FAR STEVE SMITH CAN INSERT OBJECTS INTO ANUS
STEVE SMITH wouldn't do it with his tongue.
AND BY OBJECTS STEVE SMITH MEAN PENIS
I was expecting a Uranus shattering kaboom!!

"This makes me very angry, very angry indeed."
Fun fact: Mel Blanc was Marvin the Martin's voice. After Blanc's death in 1986, Joe Alaskey became the martian's voice in the films Tiny Toon Adventures, Marvin the Martian in the Third Dimension, Bug's Bunny Lunar Tunes, Another Froggy Evening, Duck Dodgers ,Tweety's High-Flying Adventure, Looney Tunes: Stranger than Fiction and Bah Humduck! A Looney Tunes Christmas along with many video games. Later on, various personalities (Rob Paulsen, Maurice LaMarche, Eric Goldberg, Bob Bergen, Neil Ross, Samuel Vincent, Eric Bauza, Damon Jones) have served as Marvin's voice.
Hey, Elizabeth!
I tried to make this point responding to yesterday's article, but I'm not sure it was articulated well enough.
I'd like to see a Reason piece or series examining the "Saudi Arabia murders reporter" deal from the perspective of why this is a major concern to the US, aside from normal "don't murder your citizens" objections.
The guy was apparently a dissident who disagreed with the Saudi government moving toward more liberalization, the direction we want them to be moving and have been urging them to move. So if he is successful, our liberalization hopes are not successful. And the Al-Jazeera article in the link suggests that there are concerns over a coup from hard-liners if the liberalization proceeds.
It becomes pretty complicated pretty quickly. We don't see the same people advocating huge and costly sanctions against China when some dissident disappears... we just complain about it. And their dissidents are pushing in the direction we want them to go. The same goes for Russia. The same goes for a number of less relevant nations with nasty governments. Much of Africa, for example.
Anyway, there's a lot to analyze here, and it seems that domestic politics is informing the debate, much more so than any reasoned foreign policy considerations - even here at Reason magazine.
Because China sends us iPhones and widescreen TVs, but SA sends us icky oil.
Yeah, I was hoping for a deeper dive than that....
Its Reason. NO way.
I personally think an indepth article as you describe would MRGA Make Reason Great Again.
It would hopefully bring good discussion about the points of the article and what people think.
This is the sort of reaction I was hoping for. That's what I look to Reason for, and I assumed that a large chunk of the readers who are not sock puppets out trolling thought the same way.
Perhaps there are only 3 of us that don't fit that description.....
"Anyway, there's a lot to analyze here, and it seems that domestic politics is informing the debate, much more so than any reasoned foreign policy considerations - even here at Reason magazine."
It will not get any real analysis; it is yet one more stick with which those who 'lost' the POTUS election can beat Trump.
Any analysis might show such action is a result of TDS, and there is no way that will be allowed to happen.
My Saudi Arabian doctor sent me to a vivisection specialist and his four goons so I'm looking forward to the check-up.
"Now all the people who presumed Kavanaugh guilty are going to have to backpedal in order to insist (rightly) that Trump is wrong and the cases are distinguishable." - James Taranto @jamestaranto
Not Cathy, she gonna double down!
Canadians can toke up legally now. Joining Uruguay, Canada just became the second country worldwide to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes.
Excellent! By the way, this should revive the efforts to repopulate Vermont with migrants. Now is a good time to buy real estate near the northern border.
>>> killed before his body was dismembered
not the order I heard.
also I have no idea how to make it happen, but someone who does should totes make a Lindsay Graham video to Fear's "Let's Have a War"
So we should always defer judgement until we see the evidence.
Wow, what a crazy idea.
"Lock her up!"
We have that evidence. Why are you so fucking dumb like 100% of the time?
So why isn't she in prison?
Let me guess, Trump, who hires the best people, also hires the worst people like he constantly whines about, and just can't get them to do their job, and you think that's perfectly consistent and competent?
We have that evidence. Why are you so fucking dumb like 100% of the time?
Hillary admitted to mishandling classified information on national tv.
Clinton has said she used the private server at her home as a matter of convenience to limit her number of electronic devices.
Which was about 10% of the truth. The truth is she wanted the ability to avoid oversight and transparency as she ran the State Department as a Foundation Fundraiser. Yes, that is convenient.
Lets compare this to President Big Ears.
"The police acted stupidly"
"Trayvon could be my son"
What a great idea to send a state representative to Michael Brown's funeral.
A Treasury employee has been arrested and charged with leaking multiple reports about financial transactions relating to former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort, campaign official Richard Gates, accused Russian agent Maria Butina and the Russian Embassy, federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday.
Natalie Mayflower Sours Edwards is accused of illegally photographing Suspicious Activity Reports (SARS) -- which are sent by banks and other financial institutions to alert law enforcement to potential illegal activity -- and leaking them to the press. Edwards worked as a senior adviser at the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), according to a press release by the Southern District of New York.
FOX news- leaker arrested
Not sure how these are crimes since it was not classified but 'sensitive' information. But she is one of the bureaucrats who seems to be upset that Hillary lost.
FOX Mueller 'investigation' winding down
Special Counsel Robert Mueller is set to issue findings of some of the core aspects of his investigation into the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia shortly after the November midterm elections, Bloomberg reported.
The outlet, citing two anonymous U.S. officials, reported that Mueller is finalizing the conclusions related to the questions on whether President Trump's campaign cooperated with Russia and whether he took any actions that could constitute obstruction of justice.
Asked about the timeline, two sources close to the president's legal team told Fox News they also believe the Mueller probe is "winding down."
Oh shit, Tony, Mueller is gonna to quit soon.
Of course, if Trump was the Manchurian candidate, Mueller should release details immediately to end the threat.
So, the conclusion is that there is nothing illegal that Trump did.
"But...but...the investigation was rushed! Trump sabotaged it! Putin sabotaged it! Global warming sabotaged it! The NRA sabotaged it! Brett Kavanaugh raped it! It was her turn! (Oops wrong rant)"
