Sears Is Filing for Bankruptcy Because Capitalism Has Given Us Better Options: Reason Roundup
Plus: Parkour robots, price transparency for drugs, and Hillary Clinton defending Bill over the Lewinsky affair

Sears files for bankruptcy. Before Amazon, before Walmart, there was Sears—one of the very first retailers built to sell just about anything to just about anyone. Its demise offers a lesson in the history of American retail and the value of creative destruction.
Founded more than 130 years ago, Sears, Roebuck & Company initially sold through a mail-order catalog; eventually, the company opened a fleet of stores across America, becoming one of the nation's most successful retail enterprises.
But the store has struggled to keep up with the changing retail environment brought on by big-box competitors like Home Depot and Best Buy, which devoted Sears-size stores to a single retail category, providing far greater selection in the process.
Walmart, meanwhile, used its buying power to sell goods at deep discounts and offered grocery sales, luring in daily customers that Sears struggled to reach. Finally, Amazon, with its online ordering, massive selection, relatively low prices, and speedy delivery, turned the retail industry upside-down—in some ways by relying on an internet-era version of the catalog strategy that Sears started with so many decades ago.
In the last 10 years, Sears has closed more than a thousand stores and shed about 230,000 employees. It has lost about $5.8 billion in the last five years, according to The New York Times, and its share price, which soared above $100 a little more than a decade ago, is now less than a dollar. As part of the current reorganization, the company plans to close 142 additional stores. It will keep operating at least through Christmas.
In the Times, retail research firm president Craig Johnson calls this "a sad day for American retail." But he also makes an important point: Sears is winding down because it hasn't kept up with the times. "There are generations of people who grew up on Sears and now it's not relevant," he tells the Times. "When you are in the retail business, it's all about newness. But Sears stopped innovating."
I don't have much personal nostalgia for Sears—I preferred to spend my mall hours at the bookstore and the arcade—but I have a lot of respect for what it represented.
Sears was a business, yes, and it made a lot of money for its owners and workers. But it was also a system for providing affordable, quality goods to the growing middle class for more than 100 years. It's on its way out because we now have superior systems for doing the same. Sears paved the way, but most of us have better options now. That is creative destruction, and it has improved hundreds of millions of lives.

Later today, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar is giving a big speech in which he's expected to push for pharmaceutical price transparency. As Axios reports, this a popular idea with some real complications. For example, "critics of the price-disclosure proposal note that most patients don't pay the full sticker price. If you have insurance, you pay a lower negotiated rate"—but the plan is expected to focus on sticker prices, which few people actually pay.

Thanks for not raping us, all you 'good men.' But it's not enough.
I yelled at my husband last night. Not pick-up-your-socks yell. Not how-could-you-ignore-that-red-light yell. This was real yelling. This was 30 minutes of from-the-gut yelling. Triggered by a small, thoughtless, dismissive, annoyed, patronizing comment. Really small. A micro-wave that triggered a hurricane. I blew. Hard and fast. And it terrified me. I'm still terrified by what I felt and what I said. I am almost 70 years old. I am a grandmother. Yet in that roiling moment, screaming at my husband as if he represented every clueless male on the planet (and I every angry woman of 2018), I announced that I hate all men and wish all men were dead. If one of my grandchildren yelled something that ridiculous, I'd have to stifle a laugh.
My husband of 50 years did not have to stifle a laugh. He took it dead seriously. He did not defend his remark, he did not defend men. He sat, hunched and hurt, and he listened. For a moment, it occurred to me to be grateful that I'm married to a man who will listen to a woman. The winds calmed ever so slightly in that moment. And then the storm surge welled up in me as I realized the pathetic impotence of nice men's plan to rebuild the wreckage by listening to women. As my rage rushed through the streets of my mind, toppling every memory of every good thing my husband has ever done (and there are scores of memories), I said the meanest thing I've ever said to him: Don't you dare sit there and sympathetically promise to change. Don't say you will stop yourself before you blurt out some impatient, annoyed, controlling remark. No, I said, you can't change. You are unable to change. You don't have the skills and you won't do it. You, I said, are one of the good men. You respect women, you believe in women, you like women, you don't hit women or rape women or in any way abuse women. You have applauded and funded feminism for a half-century. You are one of the good men. And you cannot change. You can listen all you want, but that will not create one iota of change.
'SOCIALISM IS HERE' ? VERMONT GOP CANDIDATE SAYS SHE RECEIVED OMINOUS DEATH AND RAPE THREAT

As Sarah Hoyt, paraphrasing, you're a 70 year narcissist whose husband needs an intervention because she's abusing the man.

Accusing people without strong evidence is a loser political tactic.
Men and women with good character dont go around accusing people of serious crimes without proof.

Wasn't there an LBJ story that went something like, accusing his opponent of having sex with farm animals. His aide said to him, you can't say things like that! To which LBJ replied, I know, but I want to watch him try to deny it!

A lasting relationship is built on appropriate filters where you amplify the positive and tune out the negative.
He then texted her doc and had her lexapro dialed up a notch.

She's quite the abusive fuck, isn't she.
Guy should dump her.
I will paraphrase (very politely) what my late, great, dad used to say about feminists; "They are always angry because they ended up with wussy men"
To put it more bluntly-he said they needed a good hard smack on the behind.
On the local radio station that have a modern way to say it.
Damnnnnnnn....bitches be crazy.
Not just crazy...they also be sexist!
Imagine if the situation were changed to one of race instead of color. If she went off on her husband for being a black man, even if he happens to be "one of the good ones." No one would question her racism, would they?
Whenever I hear someone saying stuff like, "men are all ____," or "women are ______," I roll my eyes and think that person is an idiot. People are individuals! You might belong to various groups either by birth or association, but that doesn't mean that you are first and foremost a part of that group and not a person who is much more multi-faceted and unique.
Stereotypes are usually based in reality, yes, but that doesn't mean every individual can be treated as a stereotype. This whole group identity crap is really long overdue to die!

Sears would ship you a huge catalog and then ship you stuff that you ordered from that catalog. Why was it so hard for them to have a website instead of a catalog? I mean, they did, but it sucked.
Because recognizing the need for change is hard, especially when your whole working life has been wrapped up in making the current model a success. And once they did realize the need for change, it was too late.
I feel bad for the guys at Sears. They ran a good business for a lot of years, then made a very human mistake. One that I could easily see myself making as I get older, too.
Is this something about a Chinese Mail-order bride?
Sears made a change - in the wrong direction. They were the dominant mail-order firm in the USA. If they'd done a good job of putting their mail-order business on the web, they would have been bigger than Amazon. Instead, they transformed themselves into a brick-and-mortar retail company just as that business became much more difficult.
The Sears-Kmart merger seems to be a major root of the problem. It created so much debt for the company that it did not have the flexibility to modernize their services for the emerging online market.
They needed Kmart to compete with Walmart because "-Mart".
Jokes notwithstanding, Kmart actually acquired Sears to upbrand itself.
Member when the bird flew over KMart and said "cheap cheap"?
That wasn't so S-Mart.
There are a billion half assed mail order websites. Mayfair!
Sears was jack of all trades and master of none. It wasn't as cheap as Walmart or as nice as Macy's.
Even Macy's had to reorg.
Yup. Macy's survived. Many department stores did not.
JCPenny is on the ropes too.
Interesting. I get a lot of shit from Macy's. It's usually decent quality and for a damned good price when you factor in all the discounts that aren't hard to come by. Just recently I got this set of cookware for like $120 and it's damned good. I bet it'll last a lifetime. I doubt it was ever really $300, but it's still a damned good deal.
Sears ended up with too much real estate for a business model change. WT Grants, Woolworths . . . The same.
Trump has a weird interview with Lesley Stahl of CBS.
And of course it's all Trump's fault!
I suspect the Sears bankruptcy is the result of Drumpf crashing the excellent economy he inherited from Obama. This wouldn't have happened under President Hillary Clinton.

'Hold my beer': Vox, Slate take Kavanaugh Derangement Syndrome to its logical conclusion
There are two components of the case for getting rid of judicial review. One is that, as a matter of basic democratic principle, the people ought to be able to consider policies and then vote on them without having the courts step in and say "no." So from a democratic point of view, it's hard to justify allowing the courts to single-handedly overrule popular will whenever they choose.
The second component is that judicial review may actually impair the public's ability to engage in serious thinking about what the Constitution means, and what we want to do in light of what we think our Constitution says. In a way, the Supreme Court simply takes on this conversation for itself, and leaves the citizenry as bystanders.
Isn't judicial review responsible for a lot of settled case law that they like? I don't think they'd like where pure democracy would take things.
Isn't the whole impetus for this conversation that the public at large is incapable of serious thinking?
"the public's ability to engage in serious thinking"
lol
Given that most of the public cannot name one thing in the Constitution, the idea of engaging them in serious thinking about what it means is, well, retarted.
But, DEMOCRACY!
retarded.
The public can be so retarded, that its retarted.
They'd have a point if by "judicial review" they meant "they won the election so they will appoint judges to reinterpret the Constitution to mean what they wish it said".
But, they appear to be fine with that if TOP WOMEN from their team get appointed.

I think its a fascinating field but I think people want more out of the current technology than is scientifically provable to the percentages they are claiming.

"Walmart, meanwhile used its buying power to sell goods at deep discounts"
Sears had mega buying power when Walmart was still a wet spot on the mattress. Give me another lesson in economics, Peter.
Pretty much this. What Walmart had was a new business model for selling whatever products it could buy at the cheapest rate possible and selling it in the most no frills way possible. It wasn't about purchasing power.
Don't forget logistics. Walmart spent decades fine tuning its logistics system, doing its best to keep its shelves stocked and not having good sitting idle in a warehouse.
Yes. I forgot about that. Walmart pretty much invented just in time supply.
thats part of the difference why wait weeks for a delivery from sears when you could get it today at Walmart. Prime example i bought a lawn mower from sear this year and knew i'd need the break in oil changed within a day they didn't have the filter and when they said it would arrive it didn't so i went on line and got it through another supplier online within a day. When you have acreage you have to mow before fire season starts no screwing around
That is an unbelievable story. They really have fallen on hard times.
You may not be old enough to remember that it wasn't Walmart that pushed Sears off its throne, it was K-Mart. Discount retailing - AKA selling cheap crap at cheap crap prices - killed Sears. Walmart simply took it to the next level and figured out it's not enough to sell cheap crap, you have to move the cheap crap fast. Walmart isn't a retailer, they're a logistics company. It'll be interesting to see how Amazon's plans to compete with Walmart with drone swarm delivery plays out when they realize the average Walmart shopper buys more than 12 pounds of cheap crap and nobody's going to go for having a dozen drones buzzing the neighborhood toting big-screen TVs.
"Walmart isn't a retailer,"
They sure have a lot of stores.

NBC- Elizabeth Warren releases DNA results
Its official: Elizabeth Warren released DNA records that she is 6-10 generations Native American.
By official, I mean that she released them after the results came in not before the results were known, it was one lab so the results might not be accurate, and she has about 1% Native American DNA which is less than Michelle Obama has in European ancestory.
See, I always knew she would never lie about something so important. Once again we in the progressive / libertarian alliance are vindicated by science.
Warren is still in my top 3 2020 presidential choices, along with Harris and Gillibrand.

Elizabeth Warren will win 1% of the EC vote against Native American Donald Trump.
First, Putin's Puppet probably will not run in 2020 because Robert Mueller and the #BlueTsunami Congress will remove him from office in 2019.
Second, even if Mueller somehow fails to deliver, Drumpf has no chance of reelection. He's too unpopular, the economy is too bad, Democratic voters are too energized, and Democrats have too many fantastic candidates. The Republicans will lose so badly in 2020 that 2018 will look competitive in hindsight.

I know i have 1/32 native American from 5 generations ago and it never showed up in those stupid DNA test also know I'm 1/4 Norwegian still didn't show up, or just maybe my family is lying which wouldn't surprise me since there was a lot of questions about how some of the family ended up here.
You're better off with multiple original source documents (birth and death records, census info, Ellis Island records, medical records, and European records- if applicable), a DNA profile, and family records (i.e. journals, pictures) to get a clearer picture of your family history.
If your family has been in the USA a long time, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has a treasure trove of records that you can buy. All members had to prove their lineage back to a patriot that fought in the Revolutionary War.
Those records can give you a starting point of your family branch, if applicable.
The supposed "results" are hilarious because this top geneticist can't even do what 23andMe has accomplished, and actually determine to what specific degree she possesses Native American ancestry. 1/32-to-1/512 is a laughably huge DNA range.

Sears should have changed it's name to General Motors and demanded the federal government bail it out.
I always thought the Sears board was flipping a coin for/against bankruptcy and they finally got "Heads" for bankruptcy.
So if Sears going down is an "American Tragedy", I guess that means the economy should never change and no company anywhere should ever go out of business no matter how much the market realities say so. I am as much of a nastalgic as anyone. But, times change. Sears going down sure as hell isn't a tragedy for the hundreds of thousands of people who work for Target and Walmart.
Anyone who has been in a Sears lately, knew that it was a matter of time.
Sears is not a company that is innovative nor a company that sells what Americans want.
They got themselves into terrible debt with the Kmart merger and have been in a negative feedback death spiral ever since.
Anyone who has been in a Sears lately, knew that it was a matter of time.
This statement almost applies even without the lately.

Elizabeth "One Percenter" Warren.
My great-grandfather's grandmother was pure-blooded Cherokee, documented by genealogical research by a family member. If my math is right, that makes me 1/32 Cherokee.
So I'm a hell of a lot more indigenous than Warren. Yet, somehow, I've never claimed minority status, never told an organization/school that I was involved with that I was a minority or a partial minority or whatever. Mainly because I'm not. If I could do it, why couldn't Senator Warren?

2^9 = 512.
It could have been more than one ancestor that was a smaller amount, but at 512, none of them could have been as much as half-Native American within the last two generations before her.
Wasn't Warren's story that her grandfather had married a Native American over the objections of his parents?
That story was probably false.
I still have not stopped laughing about the whole Warren thing to check more deeply into the story.
At this point, I just assume everything coming from Lefties is a lie and go from there.
To be fair, the report suggests that she is between 1/64 (6 generations ago) and 1/1024 (10 generations) N.A. So she could be a whole whopping 1.6%
My guess it that her people didn't do the math before this whole nothing-burger of a report came out.
I'd like to know how much of the population has around 1% N.A. DNA. I'm guessing it's a lot of the population.
"For Native American references, we used samples with in the 1000 Genomes project of Native American ancestry; these samples come from Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. (It is not possible to use Native American reference sequences from inside the United States, since Native American groups within the US have not chosen to participate in recent population genetics studies."
-Bustamonte report for E. Warren
Seems like horseshit conclusions. Warren has 6-10 generations back of Mexican and South American DNA. No evidence links her to one of the recognized tribes that lived inside the territory of the USA.
"My guess it that her people didn't do the math before this whole nothing-burger of a report came out."
There's not a heavy math load in gender studies.
We don't know how much she actually has. The statistician used Central American ancestries as fill-ins for Native Americans.
Funniest thing about this is that the testing company had to use Latin America as a stand in for Native America, due to lack of actual NA genetic samples to test against.
I'm sure she was just as surprised to find that 1/512 as anybody.
At any rate, if Harvard is discriminating against people because they aren't 1/512 Native American like Liz Warren, they should be ashamed of themselves.

From Twitter: "To put this in perspective, there's probably more of Bill Clinton's DNA in Monica Lewinsky than there is Native American DNA in Elizabeth Warren."
+1/512
Hey, smell my cigar.
Something about that smells fishy.
Montecristo No. Vagina
So, Warren, instead of being 100% white, is allegedly ONLY 99.9% WHITE!!
'It's okay. In the meantime, I'm president and you're not'
'And you obviously have neither the proper temperament nor demeanor to be an interviewer, right, Justice Kavanaugh?'
Sears made a couple of big mistakes.
1) When I wasn't interested in buying anything else from Sears, I'd have bought Craftsman tools. It used to be that their brand of tools was so good, that if a tool ever broke, Sears would replace it for free--betting that their tools were so good, they probably wouldn't break. Once they started manufacturing those tools in China, they still offered the same guarantee, it's just that the tools were so cheap to manufacture, they could replace your tool for free after it broke for the third time and still make money. When my knuckles depend on a ratchet not slipping, it isn't knowing that the tool will be replaced for free that makes me grab for it. It's knowing that it probably won't slip. That was a great brand they fucked up.
2) Walmart dumped a ton of money into their online presence. I get stuff shipped to me from Walmart now. Sears doubled down on brick and mortar and acquired Kmart. Kmart already had all the same problems as Sears only more so. When Walmart was trying to fend of Amazon by going online, Sears was trying to be more Walmart than Walmart?
I've heard Sears spun off their valuable real estate holdings and won't have to give those assets up in Ch.11.
So who are the morons who've been lending the Sears merchandizing operations all that burned cash? I guess a lot of lenders made out big time and it's only the current creditors who will be left holding the bag. Doesn't Wharton and Harvard MBA turn out anyone who can read a balance sheet and assess risk anymore?
I haven't kept up with Sears, but I knew they'd been taken private.
If the guys who took them private managed to get those concrete assets out and hand the rest to creditors, yeah, I guess the creditors deserve what they got.
Eddie Lampert. A hedge fund/vulture capitalist. And Sears didn't buy K-mart, K-Mart bought Sears. Sears spun off its valuable names and now it's just the sludge left.
Is this the speech from Tommy Boy?
We don't take no........SHIT.......from anyone!
Holy Schnikes!
I don't know Tommy Boy, but I left off the bit where Sears was the original competitor to AOL. In some ways, they made the kinds of decisions Sears made about that ISP were the same kinds of decisions that doomed them.
Just from memory, at one point Sears was trying to be a financial services hub for the average Joe, so one of the things they bought was H&R Block. H&R Block decided it would be easier for customers if they could send their tax returns to them online, so they built an ISP for that, and, eventually, offered the service to retail customers. That, as I recall, was the origin of Prodigy. It was a dial-up, one of the first to achieve market penetration, that competed with AOL.
The problem came when AOL and others decided to upgrade their system to handle 32 bit. Prodigy decided there was no need for that. The internet was all in text anyway, graphics took forever to load, so might as well not risk that investment on something as silly as better graphics. Netscape hadn't even been invented yet.
Check out this commercial showcasing Prodigy's graphics.

They could have been Google.
If only they could have foreseen the "too big to fail" protection of financial services and automotive manufacturing they could have rode that bandwagon to a hefty taxpayer bailout.
Learn to rent-seek better next time Sears.
Reminds me that the Sears story is nothing compared to the GE story that isn't getting the attention it should. Same with GM - if you've ever heard the saying that GM isn't a car manufacturer with a financing arm, they're a finance company with a car manufacturing arm, you know GE didn't lose its ass on manufacturing, they lost their ass on financing.
White liberalism is dying
It's too liberal for a majority of whites, yet too distant from the concerns of most non-whites
That's white liberalism's problem in a nutshell. What voters it has are concentrated in places where their votes aren't needed. They're not a terribly terrifying bloc in West Virginia or even Maine, where Susan Collins can be confident of weathering the storm in 2020, in a state where a Republican as outrageous as Paul LePage is, after all, governor. Even in Maine, white liberalism is dying.
White liberals' commitment to identity politics necessarily makes them the enemy of their own coalition. The idea that white liberals could unleash the kind of identity politics they have unleashed among minorities but somehow stayed above the frey as the "noble white people who understand how evil the other white people are" was always absurd and destined never to last. Gradually the white working class has figured out it will be their heads on the chopping block first and are less and less suspeptable to the kind of appeals to guilt White liberals rely upon. Meanwhile, the various identity groups white liberals helped create and empower are starting to not just turn on them but turn on each other such that the coalition is impossible to hold together.
White Women, Come Get Your People
That's because white women benefit from patriarchy by trading on their whiteness to monopolize resources for mutual gain. In return they're placed on a pedestal to be "cherished and revered," as Speaker Paul D. Ryan has said about women, but all the while denied basic rights.
This elevated position over women of color comes at a cost, though. Consider what Kellyanne Conway, a top adviser to the president, said at a dinner last year for New York's Conservative Party. She suggested that higher birthrates are "how I think we fight these demographic wars moving forward." The war, of course, is with non-white people. So it seems that white women are expected to support the patriarchy by marrying within their racial group, reproducing whiteness and even minimizing violence against their own bodies.
They have already ran most white men out of the party. If they run white women, who have long been an important swing vote in many areas, the Democrats will likely cease to be competitive at the national level. They really have gone insane.
Its funny to see the few remaining white men in the Democratic Party have to yell louder and more vigorously to prove that they are woke.
White liberals' commitment to identity politics necessarily makes them the enemy of their own coalition.
They retain the white liberal Boomer delusion that South Park's Operation "Get Behind the Darky" is the way to bring about the progressive utopia. They actually expect that POCs will happily serve as their shock troops, yet still allow them to largely run things or even share power when the smoke clears (see Arthur L. Hicklib's boilerplate copypasta).
For all the shit-talking that Antifas do, being a martyr for the anarcho-socialist cause is not something most are willing to suffer. White liberals don't have nearly the same willingness to actually die for what they believe in, firstly because unlike Muslim suicide bombers, most of them are secularists who don't have an afterlife to look forward to, and secondly because they have a lot more to lose than the POCs they're pimping for.

Beto O'rourke's campaign is going south like Sherman. But hey, he is dreamy and just sucked up tens of millions of dollars in Democratic campaign money that could have been spent on competitive races elswhere. But he skateboards and used to play in a band and has dreamy hair. So, its okay.
He isn't running to win (explicitly pushing for 'assault weapon' bans, having the US flag removed from venues where he will speak). This is fund raising and name recognition. The Dem field for POTUS is wide open for 2020 right now.
I find it hard to believe that a white guy who can't get elected to the Senate could ever win the Dem nomination. Maybe he gets a VP slot. But, no way in hell is anyone not a woman or a minority winning the nomination.
He has a better shot at the Dem nomination than the Senate.
John, there are lots of places Obama couldn't get elected to the Senate. Doesn't mean he couldn't theoretically get the nomination. Plus, factor in how bizarre the Dem Party is these days.
True but Obama was at least smart enough to move to a state where he could get elected to the Senate. Beto, not so much.
Yeah. Obama would have never been elected to the US Senate from Hawaii.
Obama chose Chicago and that's not because of white people.
But, no way in hell is anyone not a woman or a minority winning the nomination.
Confident but likely wrong is no way to go through life, son. And that sentence moves the goalposts from your first sentence.
First sentence should be in italics:
But, no way in hell is anyone not a woman or a minority winning the nomination.
I would agree that no white bread man will be the Democrat Presidential candidate from here on out.
C-c-cat fight?
Making assertions about other people being wrong without any evidence except blind faith and what you hope to be the case is no way to go through life son.
The Democrats have nominated either a minority or a woman three times in a row now. I see nothing about the party that has changed that will prevent it from being four times in a row. The entire Obama coalition is built on identiy politics and getting large turnout and democratic support from minorities. The only lesson the Demcorats seemed to have learned form Hillary losing is that a white woman doesn't do that. I can't see why they would decide a white man would.
This will work as well for him as it did for Jon Ossoff.
John, but Sherman won when his campaign went south. I don't think Beto will.
Yes. That is a flaw in the analogy. But "Going South like Sherman" just rolls off the tongue too well not to use sometimes.
Immediately I think of Archer "Going South like Sherman" as Lana rolls off his tongue. I have to call phrasing.
Lana...Hawt
Sherman brought a seasoned and well-regulated army with him through the Heart of the South.
I love Texas but its not the Heart of the South. Antifa the blackshirt Fascistii are Lefties playing army.
I'm not sure disgust with the Kavanaugh hearings can sustain itself for another two weeks. That's like fourteen weeks in dog years, and journalists sniff each other's buts like dogs, so . . .
My bet is that those who are already decided broke more Republican in the last two weeks, and those that remain undecided are disproportionately likely to break Democrat. I mean, if the election is a referendum on Trump, and they haven't made their mind up about that yet, then how likely are they to suddenly realize now that Trump's the guy for them?
I still expect the Democrats to take the House, but I also expect the Democrats to try to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory one last time. They can't help themselves. The things they think make people like them are the things that disgust everybody. They can't hide that light under a bushel. They're gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
I still think you are wrong Ken. The disgust over Kavanaugh will continue. I can't see the Democrats doing anything but further abet it. What happened with Kavanaugh is that the affair made liars of every Democrat who was claiming to be moderate and different from the party leadership. People moving on from Kavanaugh won't change the opinion the affair gave them about Democrats running in conservative states and districts.
Just a few more Reason defenses of "cultural Marxism is just a right wing conspiracy theory" articles will turn those undecideds Blue!
We can't blame "cultural Marxism" on Marx. That had to be one of the most curious things Reason has ever written. You can't, strictly speaking, blame Leninism on Marx either, since it was an offshoot of Marxism that came after Marx's death. Why whether you can blame Marx for every leftist interpretation and evolution of his philosophy that came after his death is a meaningful question is something that remains known only to the reason staff.
"Cultural Marxism" should more properly be known as "Cultural Stalinism", but Stalin is just another in a long line of people who claimed to be Marxists but really weren't. Funny thing is, Marxists only stop being Marxists once it's obvious they've failed at re-creating the Garden of Eden, complete with dancing unicorns, gold nugget fountains and Kumbaya choruses.
Ayn Rand had it right. After it was clear Communism was never going to produce anything like the material wealth that capitalism produced, the Marxists just renounced wealth as a goal and embraced equality and other equally crazy concepts as an end in themselves. Thus was born what we know as "cultural marxism".
John, +1
John Roberts sent ethic complaints about Brett Kavanaugh to the 10th Circuit to resolve.
Lefties are also demanding that he recuse himself on the majority of SCOTUS cases.
Lefties are not done with Kavanaugh. Until RBG croaks and needs to be replaced, then Lefties will scream about Trump not replacing RBG with Garland.
Yeah, Project Veritas is absolutely pounding this. Guys like Bredesden are going to get killed by their own staffers saying "Yeah, the dude is lying". And that he fired nobody who was recorded saying that shows that they were not, in fact, wrong.
"Quick: find someone to accuse him of attempted almost rape 40 years ago! Sure, it's failed twice- but it worked that one time in Alabama!"
They can't like the way trends are going, and when it's going like that, you gotta reshuffle the cards.
We should really get people to focus on the California senate race, where two progressives are trying to out progressive each other.
I believe Feinstein is debating Kevin de Leon on Wednesday. Democrat vs. Democrat, with the fate of the world in the balance!!!
It'll be a contest to see who can go full retard more than the other. Should be full of choice quotes.
They can't like the way trends are going, and when it's going like that, you gotta reshuffle the cards.
Given the snubbed hand shake followed by the baseless accusation of sexual assault, I'm not entirely sure they haven't been shuffling the deck and tossing it all against the wall to see what sticks, as policy, for a while.
And the GOP can state that almost any "moderate" Dem in the Senate will vote for either Feinstein or de Leon 90%+ of the time.
Just put up ten of the more terrible ideas they have and say "Well, Donnelly is going to vote for 9 of these things. Rest assured. But which nine?"
Does he wear boxers or briefs?
Whatever a war boner will fit into.
It's a pipe dream than Beto would win in Texas, no matter how much he raised in out of state cash.
Liberal Americans Hate America First Because They Hate Normal Americans
Our liberal elite sees themselves not as citizens of the United States of America but as something better, more enlightened, more moral ? "citizens of the world." But of course, that's silly. There are no "citizens of the world" because there is no "world." There is a collection of nation-states, tribes, sects, and other groups inhabiting this giant space rock, and you can be part of one or more of them, but there is no "world." However, there is a trans-national globalist elite that shares the same stupid values, beliefs, and taboos, and that's who our useless elite identifies with. Whether it's some herring-gobbling Nord-dork in Oslo or some Marxist puppetry prof in Pomona or some gender-confused EU functionary in Brussels or some CNN geebo who gets huffy when peeps call mobs "mobs," the trans-national global elitists share more in common with each other than with their own people. And it is to their fellow elitists, and not us, to whom they are loyal.
The appeal of liberalism for the gentry left has over the last 30 years become about asserting their class superiority over the rest of white America. When a liberal talks about race, he is talking about his moral superiority to non liberal white people. Black people are just props, whose actual interests, wants and well being are irrelevent.
Woke is a status symbol. It only gives status if it is rare, hence going from gay marriage (I personally support that) to 67 genders. If they get 67, they will up it to 500. Somebody has to have the status of being Most Woke. They have to get crazier if their reward is just the emotional satisfaction of higher status.
Exactly Jonny. Once everyone accepts whatever it is you are pushing, then there is nothing special about supporting it. So, the whole thing depends on either forever losing or forever inventing some new cause once it attains any successs. The problem is that they have run out of sane causes and are having to invent increasingly insane ones like transgenderism.
It's a search for the Most Pure. After each round, those who don't measure up are cast out. I think the Germans tried this once.
To be fair, the Nazis then had to allow less pure into the SS to last the last year of WWII.
They still lost in the end.
"It wasn't an abuse of power?"
"No. No. You don't understand. He was a DEMOCRAT!"
Boston Globe says there was a math error.
Warren really at 1/1024 Injun.
It's one thing to have some distant Amerindian heritage in your veins. It's quite another to try to make hay out of it. That was Warren's great sin. It's not about how much Indian she has, it's about a white women standing the in the line meant for Indians. Inexcusable.
When reading the report, Elizabeth Warren was never compared to DNA from AmerIndian tribes. She was matched at a tiny percentage to South American and Mexican DNA.
South American and Mexican DNA is highly linked to European DNA.
Are you saying she might be 99.999% white plus 0.001% white?
That report seems to tip-toe around that point.
Elizabeth Warren did the test, so there is no way that someone she hired would ever say the test was inconclusive for AmerIndian DNA.
it depends on where you start counting from and with the new cor math who knows where the start is
Warren's Native American link is so distant, it might actually be Pocahantas.
+1000 Tom. Best one today.
agreed. should be a billboard.
Hmm.... you just gave me an idea.
*checks local electronic billboard rates.
I'm thinking about how much it costs to build that robot vs. how much it costs to train and equip a marine.
Imagine if Bush had been able to tell us correctly that he could invade and occupy Iraq with no American casualties on the ground. The calculation of when it's okay to go to war changes in that world.
What if there was no longer the possibility of a "quagmire" to dissuade us, just manufacturing costs that drop over time?
I want to be on the winning side of that technology race, but, damn, the techno-optimists have even more explaining to do.
I read someone on a blog back in the 00s describing the coming struggle between Islamism and other third world ideologies and the west as bugs versus a man with bug spray. His point was that as technology advances, western armies will get more and more automated and more lethal such that going to war will require very little risk on the part of the West and entail enormous lethality inflicted on it's enemies.
I think both you and him are onto something. The other thing about robots is not only do they reduce American casualties, they also desensitize the public to our military inflicting casualties. To give an example of what I am talking about, the Germans figured out very early on that there was no way they could get even the most fanatical elements of their army and police forces to actually shoot the millions of people they wanted to murder. They would all have gone crazy at some point and even the German public would have been so repelled they likely would have revolted. So, the Germans industrialized killing by using gas chambers. They made the murder of millions somehow more palatable to the public. Robots, I suspect would do something similar.
On that cheery note, Good day.
not even called the Sears Tower anymore wtf
What you talkin' 'bout Willis?
+1 Kim Drummond
A buddy of mine in middle/high school used to get his rocks off to the women's lingerie section of the Sears catalog. This was back when playboy and penthouse were hidden behind the counter, there was no Victoria's Secret catalog, or online porn, so yes, there are more and better options now.
"Buddy of mine". Yeah, right.
Wasn't me-I had full access to my older brother's collection of girly mags that he stashed under his mattress..
Who didnt call his penis a 'buddy of mine' from time to time?
>>>Boston Dynamics now has a robot that can run a parkour course.
somebody dial up Adama.
Sears used the telegraph system to sell watches. He then went to USPS and the unique "send no money". His innovations were much like Jeff Bezos and AMZN. Using the latest most productive way to reach customers. In addition, for both Sears and AMZN the customer was paramount and had to be satisfied. Sears, Chicago headquarters, provided a cafeteria, healthcare for his employees. Bezos actually must have a well paid staff, why else would 300,000 people work there. Salary, shares, skin in the game! A company grows with higher paid smart employees, not low paid indigents. No matter the critique of Bezos he seems to be doing the right thing.
Twitter: So now we have learned from the media that having a Native American great-great-great-great-great-grandparent makes you Native American, but that having two X chromosomes does not make you a woman.
^this.
Election 2018 is going to be a bloodbath for Democrats since most Americans are not buying into their bullshit.
Actually, we've known for most of a century that two X chromosomes do not make one a woman. Extremely strong correlation, but enough exceptions that one can't bank on it. Something many sports organizations have had to learn the hard way.
The chromosomes help trigger hormonal changes at a certain stage of embryo development, but those hormones can trigger or fail to trigger through other factors.
I'm pretty much against the lefty culture crap surrounding gender, but any objective view of the matter shows that it's not as black and white as the right culture war wants to make it. Chromosomes aren't as reliable as you think.
Of course there are gray areas and border regions.
Unfortunately, this isn't the goal the activists are going for. They want people to be the sex they think they are, whether they're in a gray area or not.
In fact, the activists are fairly black and white about this. "This person identifies as a woman and is therefore a woman, never mind that she has a dick."
Those gray areas are 'defects' to DNA and/or Chromosomes.
The vast majority of humans are very similar. Its the defects that stand out and are barely recognizable even under modern techniques.
Women have always been associated with being the sex (gender) that can have babies- XX Chromosome. Men have always been associated with the sex (gender) that cannot have babies- with an XY Chromosome.
Genome info
Inheriting too many or not enough copies of sex chromosomes can lead to serious problems. For example, females who have extra copies of the X chromosome are usually taller than average and some have mental retardation. Males with more than one X chromosome have Klinefelter syndrome, which is a condition characterized by tall stature and, often, impaired fertility. Another syndrome caused by imbalance in the number of sex chromosomes is Turner syndrome. Women with Turner have one X chromosome only. They are very short, usually do not undergo puberty and some may have kidney or heart problems.
Even if someone doesn't get the hormones that are supposed to come with having an XX or XY chromosome, that doens't make them into the other sex. It just means there is something wrong with their bodies such that it isn't producing the right chomosomes.
The question is what makes you a gender. It isn't the hormones because anyone can inject those. What makes you a gender is your chomosones. The fact that some people's bodies don't always function like they shoudn't doesn't change that anymore than someone having type 1 diabetes and a defective pancreus makes them any different than they are.
I mean their bodies are not producing the right hormones.
I find it interesting that Lefties hate individualism but when it comes to gender self-determination they want nothing to do with Genomes that makes us very much the same.
I have a theory. It's called the BTT (Bodacious Ta Ta's) Theory.
I don't have time to go into it right now.
But I have a newsletter.
Keep us posted.
Not sure Warren would even qualify for opening a casino.
I would not even give her 1 smoke signal.
Nor 1 toke of my peace pipe.
That's one awesome robot.
Now to make two of them and set them to fighting each other...and get some paying viewers...
