Raphael Sanchez, a former attorney for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Sanchez stole the identities of aliens in removal proceedings and used them to obtain credit cards and open lines of credit he used to buy things.

I worked in a branch of LE dealing with a lot of immigration cases and I would have to guess that Raphael was working some special kind of angle here. I mean, with so many of the illegals stealing their identity would be like stealing the least valuable thing they possess. To them, identities are like shiny things crows pick up and fly around with for a little while. Until the US government wises up and at least retina scans everyone at the border (much faster and cheaper than fingerprinting, DNA sampling and so on) and then forces all employers to use E-Verify all of the time then all the paper trail in the world doesn't mean much.

But I never did know everything about this game and it changed fast, especially during the Obama years.

No comments on the fact the crooked lawyer had to fiddle with other records in order to get the illegals to a place where they qualified for credit?
I would not have thought the 'poor, desperate refugees, fleeing economic disasters' were a good target for identify theft. I mean, it's not like they pay thousands of dollars to get here or anything.
