Trump's Attack on Fleeing American Companies Is the Flip Side of His Attack on Incoming Foreigners
It makes sense if you think the government's job is to protect U.S. jobs
President Gerald Ford is credited to have said that a government that is powerful enough to give you everything you want is also

powerful enough to take away everything you've got. But what's also true is that a government that is ruthless enough to rip kids from migrants to stop them from coming and allegedly taking "U.S. jobs" is also ruthless enough from letting Americans leave to protect these jobs.
Therefore, I note in my column at The Week, this morning, it is no surprise that President Trump is threatening to tax the iconic American motorcycle manufacturer, Harley Davidson, out of existence if it moves its operations abroad to avoid becoming a casualty of his trade war.
But Trump alone is not to blame. Attacking fleeing Americans as "unpatriotic" and "traitorous" has been part and parcel, bread and butter, bricks and mortar of Democratic politicos forever.
Trump is just the most consistent synthesizer of the most draconian instincts of the left and the right.

Which is weird considering Paul Harvey published pretty much this in '52. What an absolute hack.
I thought it was Abraham Lincoln.

Shorter version: Trump causes frowny face, smiley face better than frowny face.
And also, foreign nationals matter a lot. Forget about US nationals already, they had their day yesterday! The other 364 days a year are for foreign nationals.
please explain why some random person in Maine should be more important to me than some randome person in Mexico.
It makes sense if you think the government's job is to protect U.S. jobs
Rather ironic statement considering that this was, in fact, US policy during a period of relatively little government regulation on domestic industries in the 19th century.
"It makes sense if you think the government's job is to protect U.S. jobs"
You mean they are supposed to destroy them?
They should consider just getting out of the way and letting the market flourish. It's not their job to protect, create, or destroy jobs. Unless you're talking about government jobs, in which case I'm all for some destruction.
Shikha's nonsense articles are getting less website traffic. uh-oh.
It would help if you could expound upon why you think this one is nonsense. To me her premise seems pretty reasonable (while her language might be a bit of hyperbole).
Maybe Trump is just channeling his inner Schumer.
To me her premise seems pretty reasonable (while her language might be a bit of hyperbole).
I believe you that there's reasonable parts there, but if you could go through and parse reasonable premise from hyperbolic language and just the reasonable part on the web, maybe someplace connoting its reasonableness, I'd appreciate it.
To be fair, I'll understand if you skip over most of the batshit insane articles Shikha posts only do it once instead of once for each the three redundant Shikha Dalmia articles we get.
She's essentially saying that it's just as wrong to punish people (or companies) who want to leave the US as it is to punish people who want to enter it. While I suspect many Trump supporters don't agree with the latter statement they likely agree with the former, or at least did when Democrats tried this not that long ago.. She goes on to point out that punishing companies for leaving has been a talking point of Democrats from Schumer's failed ex-PATRIOT act to Obama's war on companies trying to leave the US through international mergers.
Many people on H&R consider Shikha to be some sort of SJW who only rails against immigration policy because of feelings. She shows in this article her consistent position that government should stay out of the free movement of peoples either through immigration AND emigration policy.
As a supporter (who would have been better than him of the options we had, honestly?), I don't like penalizing people for leaving. Now, their stuff will be subject to treatment as non-US, but any fines or whatever for leaving are just fucking idiotic.
I'm trying to think of another political party whose members have been... let's just say... quite vocal about fleeing American companies. Maybe now that literal Hitler is doing it, that party will shut its fucking yap.
Well, I thought your first article today was the dumbest thing written on any topic this year so far.
...but you out-did yourself.
""It makes sense if you think the government's job is to protect U.S. jobs""
One could argue that is part of the government's job.
One could, but it would mean that they don't really believe in free markets I guess.
Not many people do.
Taxes, unfair trade agreements, regulations, tariffs, business licensing, health insurance, all usurp the free markets IMO.
"It makes sense if you think the government's job is to protect U.S. jobs"
Shikha's articles make sense if you think the government's job is to benefit foreigners.
The US Government sets the trade policy.
The Chinese Communist Party sets the trade policy.
The EU Committees set the trade policy.
Trump at least wants free trade where the TOP MEN dont decide every facet of trade.
