Surprise! Young Socialist Beats Democrat Establishment Candidate
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blew Nancy Pelosi's potential replacement out of the water. It was the Dems "Eric Cantor moment."

On Tuesday, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pulled off a major victory over top House Democrat and 10-year-incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D–N.Y.). While the 28-year-old's age, gender, and ethnicity were of much interest to those watching the 14th Congressional District race, there's one thing about Ocasio-Cortez that particularly stands out—she's a bona fide Socialist.
Ocasio-Cortez worked for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D–Mass.) and was an organizer for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) during his 2016 presidential campaign. But in a Monday interview with The Cut, Ocasio-Cortez reconfirmed that she was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
For Ocasio-Cortez, changing the perceptions around socialism meant focusing on policy: "You can call that whatever you want to call that. Legislatively, when I knock on a door, the way that it looks like is improved and expanded Medicare for all; it looks like housing is a human right; it looks like a federal jobs guarantee that guarantees a $15 minimum wage, paid family and sick leave, and health care. It looks like tuition-free public college, it looks like the exploration and expansion of federal student-loans forgiveness."
Ocasio-Cortez added that her political affiliations were a "non-conversation" for voters. The election results from Tuesday night would seem to agree with her, as she led her opponent 58 percent to 42 percent. As for the legislative interests she represents, Ocasio-Cortez's campaign website listed issues such as universal healthcare, stronger gun laws, and free college.
Alongside the issues, the campaign painted Ocasio-Cortez as a person of the people who is "running for Congress to create an America that works for all of us, not just a wealthy few." She told Elite Daily that she is still paying off her student loans. A picture of her bartending at work less than a year ago circulated around the internet. In fact, one can still see Ocasio-Cortez on the cocktail bar's home page.
President Donald Trump responded to the election results by suggesting that Crowley "should have been nicer" to him.
Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi's place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he's out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 27, 2018
However, several others have come to a very different conclusion. Considering Crowley was predicted to succeed Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D–Calif.) as either the minority leader or speaker of the House, pundits are already calling Tuesday's upset the Democrats' "Eric Cantor moment," drawing comparisons to the shocking 2014 defeat. When asked if the primary results indicated a rise in Democratic socialism in her party, Pelosi replied that it was "ascendant in that district perhaps," adding that the Democrat Party was "big tent" and the win was about "representation."

libertarian moment?
Welch is already working on the article: "Socialist Election Victories Show That Libertarianism, When Whittled Down to Mean Nothing, Is Winning"
Or 'The Libertarian Case for socialism'.
Socialism in the 21st Century? Are there that many stupid people in this country?
Yes. Millenials who've never had to work for anything. They have grown up in the most peaceful and prosperous time in history, and they think that it will last forever. They have no clue what got us here, and what has failed.
Millennial always make me think of the excellent lyrics to 'Holiday in Cambodia'.
Socialism's appeal comes from the fact that it does work on the nano-level. Unless parents force their newborns to get a job, they are likely living in a socialist kind of life by choice. It works for families. But that's it. Socialists feel that a nation can live as one big socialist family by force. And it never works.
Imagine telling one block in Cortez's district that they were going to move to socialism just on their block. Then get back to us on how well that works.
Oh yeah, and one rich guy on the upper east side to fund it all. That's probably the key part of the plan that's missing, right?
The rich guy hasn't paid his fair share by virtue of the fact that he is rich. If he had paid his fair share then he wouldn't be rich.
'That's not theirs! It's a national resource!'
Michael Moore
"Tax and tax and tax some more, until every one is equally poor."
In reality, that one rich guy for the upper east side will probably move his permanent address to Florida or some other lightly taxed state where he likely already owns property.
Florida has no income tax.
We depend on the visitors to the mouse house to pay hotel and car rental taxes.
Socialism works quite well, as long as you don't mind living in small groups with a rigidly hierarchical structure and making social and technological changes at a truly glacial pace. The problem is that it doesn't scale once you get beyond the monkey-sphere. (The number of people a typical human can know and relate to personally, typically around 150.) In fairness to those who still want to return to socialism, it was the natural state of humanity for most of our existence. Of course, so was watching half your children die of disease, and occasionally getting eaten by bears.
False. Getting eaten by bears would have been totally abnormal in sub-Saharan Africa (which has no native bears) and most of South America (the spectacled bear lives only in the Andes and is extremely wary of humans).
I'm not sure socialism was a natural state as much as tribalism or small collectives. Central planning, I don't think was quite the same as despotism/feudalism.
I'm not sure socialism was a natural state as much as tribalism or small collectives.
That's what socialism is based upon. People get hung up on specific definitions of words. It's the ideas of tribalism and collectivism that socialism is based upon. Except that it being the natural order of small groups of primates, it's forced upon entire nations by men with guns.
And it's still the model of a lot of small groups. Families and such.
It's a hard distinction to make in true tribal societies because you could probably argue that it is not a State in the formal sense. And that might be the only meaningful distinction. Socialism is extending that model to a State.
But we can argue over this forever, and if we all want to get drunk and do so, I am game.
I can't drink. I always drink too much and do really stupid shit.
if we all want to get drunk and do so, I am game.
Is that the only way people can stand to be around you for any length of time?
Don't be getting your sauce all over BUCS, misanthrope. He's like the nicest dude here.
He's a dingleberry of nice hanging above the shit-filled bowl. He's still a shit, he just hasn't fallen in with the rest. It's about time someone started wiping.
Unfortunately, yes.
Hey, who wouldn't want all of those freebies?
"Those who are taught history by people willing to blatantly lie about it are doomed to repeat it."
It looks like a once great country sliding into shit.
Empires crumble from within.
There are that many stupid people in this country, but it was our specific brand of capitalism that created them, so?
So the two party's are getting more extreme? Sounds like there's room for a moderate middle candidate like William Weld to propose maintaining the status quo - raise taxes, but only a little, increase spending, but only a little, roll back government regulation over here, but only a little, increase government regulations over there, but only a little, make bakers make cakes, but only little cakes.
I forget- which party is the "conservative" party?
The Nazis. It's always the Nazis.
Socialists, they were.
I laughed.
This policy makes sense... But only a little!
"Well if I have to eat a shit sandwich, might as well make it as small as possible, for a shit sandwich."
Hey wait a minute, that sounds like practical Libertarianism, seeing as how the stoooopid ones won't go fro the whole hog!!!!!
'Practical Libertarianism' is itself an oxymoron.
Biggest difference being an actual socialist made it past the hurdle of being in a position to win a major election.
The holier-than-thou libertarians have accomplished what?
That's gotta hurt.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang.
housing is a human right
Gimme a free mini-mansion, then
Nah, it will be camps.
It's always camps.
Equality is the lowest common denominator, which is why the logical conclusion of socialism is always shared poverty.
Well, that and if you remove any incentive to better yourself there isn't any personal benefit to more education or better skills and mankind is not a selfless animal no matter how hard you cleanse undesirables from society.
Also, if you choose not to work in the socialist paradise you must be executed of course.
Except for those in charge, of course. The Castros are/were billionaires, and the left has no problem with that, despite the occasional lip service to the contrary.
housing is a human right
And we're providing it to all of those illegal immigrants! The left should be thrilled at the generousity the FedGov is showing.
"housing is a human right"
Since rights are universal any claim that something is an affirmative right means everyone is exactly equally entitled to it totally free and absolutely no one can be required to pay for it as it then wouldn't be a universal right.
Maybe Comrade Ocasio-Cortez can explain how that works.
-Bastiat
If there's one thing you can say about socialists, they are consistent.
Another thing you can say about socialists, they are bossy.
Actually you can't say that, or face the diversity police.
She does promise a bunch of new 'free' stuff. Let the deficit pay for it
The Defecit was my nickname in college.
More evidence that the Democratic Party will become the Socialists trying to hide in plain sight.
They will be fringe party and Libertarians can slip right in to challenge Republicans.
Medicare for all is popular, even in red states.
Housing people is popular, even in red states.
Minimum wage is popular, even in red states.
Paid family/sick leave is popular, even in red states.
Support for college is popular, even in red states.
Republicans have gotten the most votes for President once in 25 years. That's not popular.
You're absolutely right that "We'll give you all the free shit you want and more" is a very difficult message to beat politically.
What really matters though is that you won't enjoy living in North Mexico much when we're bankrupt. If Marxism-Leninism-Stalinism actually worked as a governing principle, the Ocaso-Lopez's of the world wouldn't be fleeing their shithole countries by the millions to come here now, would they? Chew on that a little.
This woman shouldn't be running for governor. She should be on a watchlist for sedition. Socialists are existential enemies of a constitutional republic.
She's not running for governor.
She's likely the next representative for that district, in the body that makes national laws.
The voters, there have elected a socialist/communist from the demoncrap party for decades - the party is nothing but.
This is just moving further in that direction. Though the party just won't let anyone admit it.
Hyikes. You don't know the difference between a run for Congress and a run for Governor but you expect people to put stock in what you think socialism is? That's... cute.
""Medicare for all is popular, even in red states."'
I don't know why. It only pays 80% and doesn't cover most preventive services.
Eating all the candy you can is popular. Until you vomit.
Republicans have gotten the most votes for President once in 25 years.
Then you don't know how our elections work.
And all the people it's popular with are thinking that they will be on the receiving end of the goodies and not the paying end of the equation.
I mean, that's exactly true of the working-class defenders of our current status quo.
Maybe someday she can be like the real life version of the chic female dictator from Tropico 4

Why is anyone surprised by a socialist winning a Dem primary in CA?
Two DS candidates beat Democratic incumbents in Pittsburgh state legislative primaries.
Correction: NY, not CA. I saw "Nancy Pelosi's potential replacement" in the sub-head and assumed it was CA. Although that would also imply the Pelosi was retiring or something. We should be so lucky.
I made the same mistake till I read the article.
It's pretty much the same.
Remember those ancient times when California voted for guys like Ronald Reagan?
That's how quickly a place can be "fundamentally transformed".
That's what open borders gets you.
I thought that was when Californians moved to Colorado or Montana and ruin it? Oh, different open borders.
It looks like massive tax hikes.
For an example of her financial credentials, she is paying on student loans for two degrees; she is / was a bartender.
Just another community organizer - we know where that goes.
Bernie is shedding tear.
My guess is that, like the Kommisar, she has spent no time studying practical economics (evidenced by them both saying "call it [my political brand] what you will").
Well, unlike Bernie, she seems able to hold a job. Bernie was incapable of doing that until he got into politics.
Ocasio-Cortez graduated from Boston University in 2011, where she majored in economics and international relations
What does this say about the quality of a BU economics degree?
Probably with a minor in gender studies, inter-sectional feminism and smashing the patriarchy.
Sounds like the required education for a modern woke socialist.
OK... Are you guys all retirees, or did you just really like the sound of all the shouting your grandpas did about millennials and thought you'd see how it suited you? This stuff is all eye-rollingly insipid by now. Shouldn't you be complaining about tide pods?
""It looks like massive tax hikes."'
And that's where it dies.
The lower house in NYS already passed universal health care. But it hasn't gone anywhere because they can't figure out how to fund it. Early projections has the cost at equal to the entire NYS budget.
California was looking at universal health care as well until they figured it would be twice the existing total state budget for everything. Ironically even though their numbers show the twice as large number they keep claiming it will be less. so many lies that the blind seem to accept
Vermont tried.
And failed
For Ocasio-Cortez, changing the perceptions around socialism meant focusing on policy: "You can call that whatever you want to call that. Legislatively, when I knock on a door, the way that it looks like is improved and expanded Medicare for all; it looks like housing is a human right; it looks like a federal jobs guarantee that guarantees a $15 minimum wage, paid family and sick leave, and health care. It looks like tuition-free public college, it looks like the exploration and expansion of federal student-loans forgiveness."
It looks like Soviet Russia. It looks like Venezuela.
....it looks like Sweden? It looks like Denmark?
Or do you think that a superior, nuanced understanding of politics and economics looks like "EVERYTHING WITH THE WORD SOCIAL IN IT IS SOCIALISM AND ALL SOCIALISM IS RUSSIA (which is only nominally a communist country and was never socialist but shhhh)"?
"You can call that whatever you want to call that.
Yes indeed, this right here is exactly what we need right now.
"housing is a human right" - what does that even mean?
It means Ocasio's constituency isn't made up of people who think too deeply about things.
The rich must be forced to pay their fair share to fund housing for the homeless, because nobody should be homeless in a country as rich as the United States.
I think it means "Gimme a house, you rich bastard! You haven't paid your fair share! How do I know? Do you still have money left over after paying your taxes? Then you haven't paid your fair share, so pay up, shitlord!"
It means if you don't build her a new house, you're literally Hitler.
Fine. I'll build her a house. The shower will be very nice.
housing is a human right
Based on what? I mean, there's a logical, rational basis for the claim that free speech is a right. There's a logical, rational basis for the claim that freedom of religion is a right. What's the basis for claiming that housing is such a right? She just wants people to be entitled to them? Why not blow jobs? When is Ms.Ocasio-Cortez going to start working on honoring the public's right to blow jobs?
When is Ms.Ocasio-Cortez going to start working on honoring the public's right to blow jobs?
Hell, I'd vote for her for that.
Wood not.
Hoover said "A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage." Where is my right to poultry and automobiles?
According to her, people have a right to the labor of others.
Well it look like the last fa?ade is finally coming off the Democrat's. The only good news is that it might help shatter their party.
So then both parties are shattered and it's even-steven again.
Voters are still conditioned to only choose from either Team D or Team R, shattered or not
Nice, you'll have the choice between Hitler and Stalin in the next election. That's a first.
Libertarians can find a lot to appreciate about Ocasio-Cortez. For example, she has an excellent stance on our #1 issue:
The Democratic Party is clearly moving toward the Koch / Reason position on immigration. Sometimes it's difficult to feel optimistic when the President is a white nationalist Putin puppet, but last night's result demonstrates we shouldn't lose hope.
#AbolishICE
#BlueWave
#LibertariansForOcasioCortez
That would be YOUR #1 issue, "whiny little bitch"
Unlimited immigration into the US is the most important issue for all serious libertarians.
OBL, you betray your white privilege once more. It isn't feasible to bring everyone to America, even though it is their inherent right. So the only way to make everyone America is to turn earth in Planet America. Ensuring cradle to grave entitlements and houseing for all humanity.
Until you figure that out, you're just another cis racist unwoke deplorable. In fact, I'll bet you have a secret shrine to Drumpf!
For the millionth time, it's troll/ parody sock puppet account that someone is running for lulz. Stop responding to it as if it's a real person with real opinions.
No no no, KEEP responding to it. The responses give me the lulz.
Yeah, I'm with this. It's like watching pratfall videos.
Archival security cam footage of somebody getting mad at OBL
"You can call that whatever you want to call that. It looks like tuition-free public college, it looks like the exploration and expansion of federal student-loans forgiveness."
It looks like it's dumb as hell.
On the plus side, the reemergence of socialism is bound to bring back fusionism. Right? Hello? National Review? Anyone?
It's about time we get nuclear powered flying cars.
+1 Huey Lewis and the News soundtrack
"...t looks like is improved and expanded Medicare for all; it looks like housing is a human right; it looks like a federal jobs guarantee that guarantees a $15 minimum wage, paid family and sick leave, and health care. It looks like tuition-free public college, it looks like the exploration and expansion of federal student-loans forgiveness."
Good of her to list her bona fides in keeping with label Democratic Socialist. Is that an oxymoron, by the way? Especially for anyone who has to pay for all that gimme?
Is that an oxymoron, by the way?
Democracy is mob-rule. If the mob demands socialism, it's not an oxymoron.
No, just a bunch of moron.
Maximoron.
""Democracy is mob-rule."'
Or put another way, minority loses, and socialist are in the minority.
The United States has a GDP of somewhere around $20 trillion, but we're only spending around $5 trillion - where's the other $15 trillion going? Plenty of money for lots more free shit when 3/4 of all the money in this country is just floating around out there with no Top Men controlling how or where it's being spent.
"That's not their's! It's a national resource!"

Surprise! Young Socialist Beats Democrat Establishment Candidate
Here in Seattle, that's called Wednesday.
Ocasio-Cortez worked for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D?Mass.)
Wait, she's 28 years old? What was she four when she worked for Ted Kennedy?
The Senator went to his reward nine years ago, so that would mean she was no older than...19?
Ugh. I hate knowing what it means for a young attractive female to "work for" a Kennedy.
"This time *I'll* drive."
Nice one. Although you owe me a new keyboard to replace the one I just spewed soda all over.
"Work for" or "work under?"
"Work for" or "work under?"
Like Kamala Harris got her start working under Willie Brown in California?
I can imagine the job she performed on him. And he was a male feminist, so you can rest assured that, yes, he had his dick in her mouth.
Ed Zachary.
She was 'in college'
While a student at Boston University, Ocasio-Cortez was an intern in the immigration office of U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy
Functionally, on the other hand, it comes in the form of a jackboot with a gun, removing counterrevolutionaries capitalist roaders from the household and dragging them off to be re-educated.
I mean that's an interesting thing to say when in this country it's always been the deputized defenders of capitalism mowing down or firebombing the citizens who dissent, but OK.
Ocasio-Cortez's campaign website listed issues such as universal healthcare, stronger gun laws, and free college.
When everything is 'free' you need really strong gun laws, so no inconsistencies there.
Actually this is good for the libertarians. Why? Because repubs are losing on immigration and the muslim ban (recent SCOTUS decision notwithstanding) and so 'boring' issues like limiting excessive spending and social benefits like medicare for all will soon become more important. Have a little faith, my darling Drumpfkenc?cken.
Praising the election of a socialist to own the cons
The cons are owning themselves by switching to the dems. E.g. Will and Schmidt and lots of others. They don't need my help. However the libertarians retain the high ground on spending issues and now's our time to shine. Another issue that might cheer you up: this district is mostly Latino, meaning this is our future. Best to litigate these issues now before it's too late.
The loss of Schmidt, truly, is harming. Again, the genius behind the McCain campaign is a genius of the highest order.
Will is just a bore.
However the libertarians retain the high ground on spending issues and now's our time to shine.
No one cares, least of all the electorate.
Wrong. Polling has been consistent on the public supporting border security, and the Muslim ban. If Trump sticks to his promises, amd the GOP congress quits fighting him, they will be fine.
The only place they 'llose' Is the media. Which will back the democrats no matter what.
Love watching polls being used as evidence for points. Everyone's gotta learn sometime.
It's good for Libertarians, 3rd parties, and Independents. It's very bad for Republicrats who have had a stranglehold and benefitted from that stranglehold by passing awful law and engaged in awful politics.
Agreeing/disagreeing with Ocasio is not the point. The point is that the parties of McConnell and Pelosi are on borrowed time, and openings for new blood are increasing. That's a huge opportunity.
To be sure socialism has its negatives but......
Still, would.
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
For shame, is that all you think about?
Yes.
Yes.
I wouldn't kick her out of bed for talking politics. At first.
The goal would be to keep her mouth full. Amd at 28 she should already know to maintain eye contact.
Eh, not bad. Looks like she has the early signs of "resting bitch face" that will probably get worse with age, but for now, sure why not.
If nothing else it would interesting to sea if she screams out Karl Marx quotes as she climaxes.
*see* not sea. Goddammit.
I'm starting to get the feeling that Donald Trump might have some serious psychological issues.
Sure.........
He's the one with issues..........
You don't think he has issues?
Trump is being Trump, gloating about Pelosi's "sure" replacement who was to soak up decades helping the Republicrat Congress pass terrible laws, uphold orthodoxy and engage in cronyism, lose badly by 15 points.
Note how this clown is taken seriously by the media. She is a more ethnic Christine O'Donnell.
I hope Marc Molinaro destroys her.
Of the Susan Molinaro and Guy Molinaro fame?
Shes in NY, so you mean a more ethnic Rosie O'Donnell.
#BlueWave
In the blue primary.
"housing is a human right"
I get so tired of that crap. Liberals play the human right card for anything that is a nice thing for someone to have. It's convenient because it automatically paints any opponent as someone who wants kids to live in back alley dumpsters. But how is it compassionate when you are effectively saying that someone else must be forced to pay for it?
But how is it compassionate when you are effectively saying that someone else must be forced to pay for it?
If you don't want to pay for free shit for strangers then you're greedy. If you want to use other peoples' money to pay for free shit then you're an altruist. Duh.
I'll allow it. I'm not on board with the Bernie shtick (promise free shit, and when someone asks how it will be accomplished, promise magic). But explaining things realistically is evidently not good politics in America. And it doesn't serve the function of moving the Overtone window to the left, which is the least the socialists can do even if they can't win non-safe districts.
I'm not sure if I'd be too hard on Sanders. There was some honesty buried in his plans. Remember, his own plan to save social security had a chart on his campaign website showing the program cratering around the time his primary voters were reaching retirement age.
There was also the time that he described himself as a national(ist) socialist, despite Ezra Klein's best efforts to steer him away from that particular rocky shoreline.
Perhaps he could have worn some kind of armband to remind people. And a special hand salute.
Every once in a while Tony does a peek-a-boo and says something remotely sound!
Too bad the DNC took a hard left at Pismo Beach. It's amazing socialist perverseness remains popular.
What's the "Overtone" window? Is that what you get your spray-tans through?
No, dumbass, it's how you get interesting musical resonances without playing the actual note.
It's what I throw my computer through in frustration of lacking an edit button.

IT IS A HUMAN RIGHT!!!
Cortez: I will bring Mexico and Venezuela to America!
I'm genuinely curious if this chica ends up winning the general election now. She cut the balls off Crowley because he hadn't really campaigned in apparently more than a decade, and he tripped over himself to make sure he was the biggest asshole in the primary of two people that was usually one person.
So, we'll see if socialism wins in the general since this strikes me as mostly an 'accident' in the sense that if you're a sitting Congressman it's never wise to simply ignore a primary challenge.
A 'referendum' on the future of the Democrat party? Maybe, they do seem to be skewing further and further left but then again so are Republicans.
As for the legislative interests she represents, Ocasio-Cortez's campaign website listed issues such as universal healthcare, stronger gun laws, and free college.
So, yeah, I think we might be able to suss out that older Democrats stayed home since they figured Crowley was a lock and why bother, and that ended badly for them. It's also possible that the Latin vote really swung it, but I haven't really looked at in-depth analysis yet so this is just rambling on my part. Plus, I don't really give a shit since I don't live in New York.
It's NYC, and not one of the tiny enclaves that occasionally votes GOP either. She will win in a landslide.
Her district is heavily Latino in large parts (southern Bronx, northern Queens).
Both your comments above reflect what I figured about the district, and frankly I'm one of those people who isn't very surprised when Latinos vote for socialists or communists. The vast majority of the Latino world is, in fact, socialist and communist. Not that there aren't exceptions, probably large ones in fact. It's just an observation of statistical probability.
I still don't think this is necessarily of national significance though. I doubt she'll win the race because she's socialist, but rather just because she's a Democrat. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets primaried out next time, but then again New York also passed that 'free college' bullshit so...y'never know.
I'm still not sure how a State is legally able to hold people to a contract with the state that restricts their legal movement without paying a huge sum of cash though. I suspect there just hasn't been a test case to overthrow that yet, but economics might do it for them eventually. I note that there haven't been any major stories on that for some time now, so I have no idea how 'successful' it's been in terms of state finance. Badly, I suspect.
""The vast majority of the Latino world is, in fact, socialist and communist. "'
And some are currently trying to escape those governments for a better life in the USA.
And just like the Californians who fled the state's policies and moved to red states, they'll bring their political preferences and inclinations with them.
Well, NY legislators did. Who's gonna stop them? It's going to take something a lot crazier than that to wake up the voting-age population to the fact that maybe there is an alternative.
That fund only pays last dollar after you apply for aid and you are required to stay in NY one year for every year you received the fund. There was a lot of liberal grumbling after it was past.
Funny, poor people will not benefit from it as much as not so poor people because of the federal money poor people will get.
This wasn't the demoncraps' Eric Kantor moment.
It was their HiLIARy moment - the incumbent thought he didn't really need to campaign, since his re-election was a lock.
It appears Democrats have their version of the Tea Partiers to deal with.
This is unfortunate. The antidote to one batch of counterproductive, unrealistic, belligerent malcontents is not likely to be another bunch of them.
I still don't see what was so bad about Tea Partiers.
They were non-violent and picked up after themselves.
Unlike all the "Occupy" groups that the media slobbered all over as if they were all heroes.
Hey, the (12 or so) Occupy people in my city set up a bunch of porta potties for the 99% to use when they came out to join the protest, which they never did. It was a pretty sweet deal for all the homeless dudes who didn't have to crap in the bushes anymore.
Bernie Sanders would have most likely won the nomination if your gals hadn't rigged everything in Hildog's favor!
That's why Seth Rich had to be murdered in cold blood; because he was about to blow the lid wide open on that whole clusterfuck right from the inside.
I would love to know the truth about that murder.
It looks suspicious but is that investigation closed?
Hillary already ordered the cops to close it. There have been several private investigations. I don't know their status.
Not even the president has that power, so isn't it basically futile to oppose her reign?
Julian Assange knows the truth. That might be the only reason he's still alive.
Hopefully he divulges it all to the world one day.
What's he waiting for? Hillary to die so she can't kill him?
If she has complete control over the police and FBI, I figure she could either kill him anytime she wanted from anywhere, or could easily figure out how to become some sort of lich.
It appears Democrats have their version of the Tea Partiers to deal with.
Like Blue Dog Democrats?
These are the three things that got her the nomination.
Correct. Because the vast majority of voters vote based on team or identity politics.
There has been some good, sober analysis of the Kennedy phenomenon (some right here at Reason) in Massachusetts over the last several decades, and a lot of the repeated victories were essentially chalked up to Irish American tribalism, because a lot of the Irish working class had little in common politically with the Kennedy's they were voting for.
I suspect there's a lot of the same going on here.
It is what it is.
Demographics are changing. The "burn it down" phase continues in the establishment backlash. This particular race is the mirror equivalent of Trump's rise. It can be leveraged to the benefit of Independents, 3rd parties and "new ideas" in Washington DC. Each hit the establishment Republicrats take loosens their stranglehold on everything, most importantly their awful Congress.
Yes, that can't be ignored. I still contend there's a major re-alignment of political/party structures going on, not just in this country but in the west in general. The Democratic party is splitting into smaller factions with establishment...technocratic Democrats (Clintons/Pelosis/Feinsteins, et al) held in high disdain by many rank and file in the party.
Republicans suffering a similar fate.
Next we will hear her complaining about not able to get anything done.
Welcome to government Ocasio-Cortez
Well I sure the one thing she will accomplish is to dissolve ICE. By executive order. As in her mind she probably thinks she can unilaterally order the dissolution of a federal agency.
I hope she remembers that ICE is an armed agency - - - - - -
Meh...

I couldn't find any bikini pics of her online. I will keep looking.
A boob job wouldn't hurt her.
It will be free once she is elected, right?
I guess I figured that the constant, vigorous circle jerk of empty quips about socialism and millennials that you guys have going would keep your balls drained, but apparently there's always some room for empty objectification, too! I really hope you don't suffer the illusion that any of your views about politics or economics holds any weight outside this nice daisy chain you've created. I guess if they have to slap the word "REASON" on this garbage, that answers the question
Is free internet included in her Five Year Plan? I can play proletariat-guy for a few months if it helps.
That's part of Net Neutrality, right?
That depends.
The internet that deals in left wing issues, images, and politics will be free.
The internet that deals with the right wing stuff will be $500.00/mo to pay for the other one.
No, but it's in Google's. A good example of why government needs to stay the fuck out of it right now. We have a private company already starting to install free internet in select cities. Let them!
And by "let them", I mean city counsels need to stop accepting bribes from Comcast to give them a monopoly when another company is willing to come in and create the infrastructure that would allow users to get out from under the ever-increasing monthly internet bills.
Time for the socialist tea party. Progressives are definitely not the liberals of the 60s and 70s anymore. I guess the authoritarian desires to control people is just a universal feeling whether it comes from a hippie or a dictator. Just weird to see those who fought the "moral majority" in the 1980s turn around and form the new "moral majority" in the 2010s.

There are really 3 main factions in this realm: true liberals (with civil libertarian leanings on social issues), Progressives (who want varying ratios of government intervention and may/may not be civil libertarians or reactionaries) and establishment Democrats (who likely place a veneer of "freedom" over actual draconian law and global interventionism, career politicians).
The last group, of course, is in trouble right now.
Additionally, the Democrats soaking up decades in Congress largely abandoned the working class a long time ago. Candidates like Ocasio are filling that void. That void is growing. Trump is also filling that void, obviously.
As for the career Republican congress (the McConnells, etc), they are doing absolutely nothing, because opportunists cannot turn on Trump. The Amashes and Massies, the principled libertarian-leaners, have nothing to lose.
Just weird to see those who fought the "moral majority" in the 1980s turn around and form the new "moral majority" in the 2010s.
This. The #metoo movement is maybe the best example. What they did to Aziz Ansari (and Bill Clinton!) for example harkens back to what you might have expected from the ultra- right wing.
Like Trump, there are unintended establishment outcomes here, regarding the awful Republicrat parties in Congress and elsewhere: it's shaking up the Washington DC orthodoxy gave way to Trump's rise in the first place. Right out of the gate, abolishing the highly authoritarian Bush/Cheney ICE would be welcome.
The "burn it down" phase is ongoing, and growing pains will happen. But it's clearly becoming evident that this is opening up pockets for Independents and 3rd parties to move into, at the national level. The McConnells, Pelosis and Ryans are on borrowed time, so expect the establishment's politics to go even further into the cesspool.
Ocasio-Cortez worked for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy
So, I guess she won't be beating the "me too" drum too hard.
-jcr
Well, I would suspect 'her too'.
I don't think there was a 'not her' idea in his head.
Anybody stunned that she gets ample support from virulent anti-Semites?
I have a suspicion she's doing this simply because she doesn't want to pay back her student loans.
Surprise - the DNC is now the socialist anti-white party. Some old school Dems are trying to slow it down but it's too late.
The old-school dems sucking down social security as hard as their dentures will let them and screaming about their own grandchildren being entitled? Those ones?
Where does Zuri Davis get the idea there is any essential difference between Crowley and Ocasio-Cortez? They are both Marxists pushing Marxism for everyone except themselves. There is, however, one really good thing about her victory worth celebrating. It may influence other Marxists who would have run as Democrats to run as Socialists. There may be twenty or thirty percent of the electorate in the nation who are dumb enough to vote for a socialist.
We should have all learned by now that to win elections you need to tell people what they want to hear. What do the millenials want? Free stuff. Who will pay for it? Mom and dad of course but they are old and don't really need it.
She does not go far enough. You are not going to challenge Trump with old tired practical pantsuit Democrat politics.
Why not promise to send everyone between the ages of 18-35 a check for $10,000 on their birthday every year.
Also two weeks free paid vacation at one of the many new awesome government sponsored resorts to be built around the country.
Gotta get their attention.
That was my district (off & on, w redistricting) before I moved out of the Bronx in 2016. We sometimes cross-endorsed Crowley on the Conservative line. It's a fairly conservative district as NYC goes. Crowley was anti-abortion, but that hardly comes up these days.
YES! Just keep moving further, and further to the left Democrats. It's going to work out awesome for you in swing states, I promise!
The thing about national politics is that you might get a few total nutters in office from places like NYC and SF, but its real value is in tainting the way people in the other 95% of the country view the parties. A borderline sane Democrat in Iowa will get trounced because the voters think of people like this, which is exactly what we need.
All we need is a purge of RINOs too and the Rs might actually get through a few more decent pieces of legislation during Trumps tenure. It will be interesting to see if the generic ballot slide Dems have been seeing lately holds up and the Rs hold strong, or actually even take seats.
What point in our political history are the D's farther to the left than, right now? Which policies?
