North Korea Claims It Will Suspend Its Nuclear Weapon and Missile Tests
With a meeting between North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and President Trump on the horizon, North Korean state media also vows the nation will close its current active nuke test site.

In advance of planned summit meetings where North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un would talk with South Korean leaders and then President Trump, North Korean state media drops a Friday afternoon news dump surprise: they claim they are going to suspend any further nuclear weapon or missile tests and shut down their current nuclear test site.
As per a Washington Post report, this surprising announcement, which seems at least in part a vindication of Trumpian diplomacy on the nuclear issue, "was made after a meeting of the central committee of the ruling Worker's Party of Korea, convened Friday to discuss policy issues related to 'a new stage' in a 'historic' period. However, analysts noted that it made no mention of giving up its program, simply signaling a freeze."
Matt Welch last month praised the possibilities inherent in Trump's controversial decision to meet with Kim Jong Un, which at least as it looks this afternoon is bearing good fruit.

I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.

Well, I'll believe it when I see it.
It's difficult to imagine any country willingly giving up nuclear weapons.
Khadaffi did.
and was then immediately bombed by NATO, sodomized with a bayonet by jihadis, and shot repeatedly while he begged for his life.
Ace diplomatic precedent-setting. If only we had some big thinker like that around now to handle this messy and complex world.
They don't share our progressive views on the death penalty.
She's very proud of her violence. She's like a true viking warrior.
The old S Africa gave up nukes. They had as many as 6 weapons.
South Africa has two, that's right
One for the black and one for the white
/Tom Lehrer
Well, to be fair, Khadaffi had it coming, even if it was other shitheads who did it to him.
-jcr
Yes, but what lesson will the other shitheads take from Kadaffi's fate?
"Don't give up your nukes, shithead!"
Do we know for certain if he actually had a nuke on hand, or if he was just working towards getting one?
Either way, as Gilmore said, Obama made it harder for smaller nations to think about giving them up.
But easier to pretend they will if the president is willing to make a deal about it.
Hilarious, isn't it?
Obama+Clinton/Kerry doctrine:
1. Invade, depose, and (aid) execution of leadership that dismantles and turns over WMD infrastructure, then allow country to completely disintegrate and become the world's largest slave market
2. Accept promises of self inspection to pause WMD program, leave infrastructure intact, and reward with palettes of cash country that says it will stop trying to develop WMDs for a few years
I thought he had chemical weapons.
So did South Africa. In 1989.
Citation for the above.
He may not have much of a choice, and there's no need for North Korea to be a pariah when they could be a dictatorship like China. Kim has a lot to gain by joining the respectable world.
And like I said, if China stopped supporting them, their nuclear program might not do them much good.
To get people to change course, you only need to do a combination of one or two things. Either you make their present course more expensive than it's worth or you offer them something better than they've got.
If China won't continue with North Korea on their present course at the expense of Chinese trade, then their present course may be untenable. And we don't have to try hard to offer North Korea something better than what they've got. They can hardly feed themselves.

"He may not have much of a choice, and there's no need for North Korea to be a pariah when they could be a dictatorship like China. Kim has a lot to gain by joining the respectable world."
He'd have to do it with the NK population and the respectable world ignoring his starvation of some 10% of the population and imprisoning some similar number in concentration camps.
China was lucky: Mao died.
"If China won't continue with North Korea on their present course at the expense of Chinese trade, then their present course may be untenable. And we don't have to try hard to offer North Korea something better than what they've got. They can hardly feed themselves."
NK was the industrial end of Korea, pre-war. Not now; they have no way of generating energy or transporting it. But there is little really good ag districts and what there is has been demolished by the Kims' insistence on bogus ag techniques; there is little food available.
By what I've read recently (and it all needs heavy salting), the 'famine' is over, in that fewer are dying of malnutrition, mostly as a result of illegal trade (one book stated that Kim 'made starvation the only legal option'.). But the dying continues: The army and the gov't get fed; all else is irrelevant.
So he has no real need of acting like a civilized country; he doesn't seem to care if the population starves.
If he does, he has only a negative 'good' to offer; dump the nukes.
I'm on chemjeff radical individualist's side here: I'll believe it when I see it.
Actually, the army doesn't even get fed. I was reading that the soldiers often have to find their own food.
"Actually, the army doesn't even get fed. I was reading that the soldiers often have to find their own food."
According to some of the defector books (see below; salt required), they simply steal it from the population.
"And like I said, if China stopped supporting them, their nuclear program might not do them much good."
It's already got the US to finally sit and talk face to face. That may not seem like such a big deal to you, but the North Koreans evidently think otherwise.

No it has not. And the offer was on the table fot the entire time Obo sat on his lying ass.

I'm glad you, as a fucking imbecile, can mind-read the Norks.
"No it has not."
Yes it has. The Americans have agreed to hold face to face talks with North Korea. It had no choice, really, What with political changes in the South, and Americans finally realizing that North Koreans weren't taken in by America's bluffing strategy. It was either sit down and talk, which makes trump look like the peace maker he promised to be, or escalate a conflict which nobody in America has the stomach to fight. And nobody else wants.

Why do you doubt NK during the Trump admin when you believed Iran during the Obama admin? (I have a theory)
I maintain that signs that the North Korean summit will go forward and go well are the ultimate weather vane for which way the wind is blowing between Xi and Trump on trade, too.
This isn't 3-D chess, this is realism. This is pragmatism. North Korea is what shook loose in these contentious trade negotiations. If China didn't want this summit to happen, it wouldn't have gotten this far.
Last month, some of you who read the news may remember, Kim went to Beijing to meet with Xi--the first time he's left the country. It's not a big deal in western culture who goes to whom, but in their culture, the emperor doesn't come to his subordinates. His subordinates come to him. Whatever Kim wants, it probably doesn't matter as much as what Xi wants. And judging by his trade concessions, Xi doesn't want a trade war.
Last week he announced that he was cutting tariffs on cars. This week, he announced that he was rescinding regulations that require American companies to bind themselves to a Chinese partner (which facilitates sharing technology among other things). These concessions were not made out of the warmness of Emperor Xi's heart nor were they made because he read some excellent articles written by libertarian think tanks.
You make concessions because of pressure--unless you're an idiot like Barack Obama.
The thing about many libertarians here is it is "principles" > principles.
Trump is expanding liberty by using our bargaining power (which is fucking vast and unmatched). It is not rocket science. Really, I'm quite disappointed in the purveyors of our ideology for not seeing it or embracing it.
They did the same thing with Reagan.
You could take the same things they said about Reagan being stupid and reckless, change them to being about Trump, and they'd look they were written yesterday.
You should have seen them when Reagan turned his back on Gorbachev at Reykjavik.
It was almost as bad as their hollering when Reagan later turned around and embraced Gorbachev, too.
Didn't Reagan know Gorbachev is a scoundrel?
I don't know that Trump's strategy will work. I would never use trade policy that way. I hope I was wrong--for the sake of the country. I'm old enough to remember when we were doomed to lose the Cold War. I remember when we won it, too. It wasn't because of nothing. It came from Pershing Missile deployments and giving Stinger missiles to religious fanatics in Afghanistan. Reagan made the Star Wars shit up out of thin air. It was all leverage. Contentious negotiations are won with leverage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EdGUEbnlvQ
I wouldn't have used trade in the way Trump is until I saw what he is doing. He is negotiating on things he cannot lose. I just hope he does not get overconfident once the low hanging fruit are gone.
Either way, it is certainly better than the Neo-con method of using the military to gain economic advantage or concession.
Well don't count your chickens before they're hatched. We don't know what a post-peace-treaty North Korea would look like. After all look at Cuba today. Both Europe and the US more or less have normalized relations with Cuba, and it's still a pretty awful place.
But even if some measure of peace is achieved in North Korea due in part to Trump's trade war crap, the expansion of liberty would only have been a result of bullying and coercion. Which is rather contrary to the point of liberty in the first place, not to mention the NAP. It is just a milder version of the neocons' strategy of "bomb them into democracy".
Is this satirical? I can't tell.
If not what I said about "principles" over principles couldn't have been better displayed.
Cuba would look like paradise to a NORK peasant, at least no one starves to death or has to eat grass.
I hear the gulags are better too.
"I hear the gulags are better too."
Everything I've read says so.
Much nicer weather, too, except for the occasional hurricane. I'm pretty sure NK gets pretty damn cold in the winter.
The North Korean marching band is way better, though.
If they aren't, off to the gulag!
"Well don't count your chickens before they're hatched."
Here's what I wrote below:
"IF IF IF Trump averts a trade war and rids American security of the threat of North Korea's nuclear ICBM menace . . ."
----Ken Shultz
Were three capitalized "Ifs" not enough? Would four or six or twelve done the trick?
"We don't know what a post-peace-treaty North Korea would look like. After all look at Cuba today. Both Europe and the US more or less have normalized relations with Cuba, and it's still a pretty awful place."
You need to rid yourself of your neoconservative thinking. It's absurd, cruel, and stupid.
The purpose of American foreign policy is not to make Cuba or North Korea a better place for Cubans and North Koreans.
The purpose of American foreign policy is to protect our rights from foreign threats.
How is Trump expanding liberty?
"This isn't 3-D chess, this is realism. This is pragmatism. North Korea is what shook loose in these contentious trade negotiations. If China didn't want this summit to happen, it wouldn't have gotten this far."
Kim Jong Un has repeatedly shown he is not a puppet of China. You are reading tea leaves that are not there.
I'm not saying he's a puppet.
I'm saying that North Korea may not want to go it alone.
IF IF IF China is willing to withdraw their support for North Korea rather than suffer the consequences of a trade war with the U.S., then that's a reasonable explanation for the changes we're seeing.
North Korea isn't changing course for no reason at all.
China isn't changing course for no reason at all either.
IF IF IF Trump averts a trade war and rids American security of the threat of North Korea's nuclear ICBM menace--through mere negotiations--then he will have done something truly spectacular--even better than defeating ISIS through his collaboration with Putin.
And he'll have done it over the objections of yours truly. If Trump pulls this off, I was wrong, he was right, and we should all be impressed.
16 years of neocons got us nothing but grief. Thank God for pragmatic realism.
There is no chance of a trade war with China. None. Zero.
China can make our lives a bit worse. We can destroy them economically. This was a "war" that was won before it even started, and China knows it.
At some point someone must have explained to them that there were limits on the amount of crazy that would be put up with.
Either that our own Francisco d'Anconia's decade long strategy of holding his breath until North Korea started to believe in the NAP is finally paying off.
North Korea Claims It Will Suspend Its Nuclear Weapon and Missile Tests

Huh, this doesn't even compute.
Like the time piggy's dad "ended" the nuke program in return for fuel oil, a heavy water reactor, and a visit from the US Secy of State... and then a few years later tested his first nuke.
So I guess Trump can boast that he is worth more than Madeline Albright, since he didn't have to add any extras to get a false promise from the Norks. #MakeAmericaGullibleAgain

pathetic.
Get back to us when you're dealing with something other than the voices in your head.
Fallacious on multiple levels: you're attempting to use ad hominem attack to avoid dealing with the argument, and to top it off your ad hominem attempt is based on a falsehood.
I like this Trump guy. Like many of the things he does and the results he gets. Most of all I like the amusement he brings when he wads the unhinged libs, Old Beaner and the rest of the Bilderburgs pantaloons. Unless,of course, the Norks and the Chicoms have become more conciliatory because they're just good guys at heart.
Words aren't results. If you don't understand that you're just as gullible as Trump.
"Words aren't results."
You're right. And more than willing to ignore the results:
As of 12/31/17
1) DeVos
2) Gorsuch
3) Ajit Pai, end net price fixing
4) Major reduction in the growth of regulations "By one key measure of regulatory growth -- the page count of the Federal Register, which lists all new rules -- Trump reduced regulation by almost 50 percent in 2017.
5) Dow +30%
6) Unemployment at 4.1%
7) The US Manufacturing Index soared to a 33 year high in this period which were the best numbers since 1983 under President Reagan.
8) Got repeal of the national medical insurance mandate.
9) Withdrawal from Paris climate agreement.
10) Still making lefties steppin and fetchin like their pants is on fire and their axxs catchin'
11)Not sure about the tax reform; any "reform" that leaves me subisdizing Musk's customers is not what I hoped for. Let Musk run a company for once.
12) In the waning days of 2017, the Trump administration pulled its support for the $13 billion Hudson Tunnel project.
13) More than 16,000 jobs have been cut from the federal leviathan.
I was specifically talking about the Nork declaration, which is just words and is being treated as a result for some reason.
4: 50% reduction in GROWTH of regulation, at best.
5-6: So now unemployment and the Dow are meaningful measures of presidential policies, effective 1/20/2017 apparently. I'm no fan of Obama, but if you use the same metrics on his presidency, he blows Trump out of the water. And with a crash probably coming soon, not sure you want to hang those albatrosses on Trump's neck.
8: Which is going to kill the health insurance industry and force us into single payer. Failing to get the whole of BO-care repealed is a massive failure.
9: Paris is very likely to be reinstated by the Dem who takes the presidency in 2021, and since the agreement claims to have a five year notice provision, that means there would be no interruption.
I have no idea what people are talking about.
All Kim said was he was suspending tests and launches and that he doesn't need them anymore. He is closing, for now the test facility which is not all that big a deal. Not reactors, existing launch facilities r&d, or weapons. None of that stops him from building more bombs and improving what he has.
Not only that but when has N Korea ever kept its word?
He has enough already to keep his nuclear threat very real.
Koreans know what an ambush is and how to set one up. They have been doing this for decades.
I'll agree that any "agreement" with NK is not really worth ink and paper; NK makes Stalinist USSR look like the model of credibility.
But I would not credit them with skill at 5D chess; these are common thugs who have lucked into poer.
Do not underestimate them. These thugs have managed to build nuclear weapons and long range missiles. They have avoided war since the cease fire and built a massive military despite being under sanctions and an international pariah.
Koreans are a very old and proud culture. To them we are the savages.
If you look at it from their perspective it was their brilliant military accomplishment which is bringing the president of the most powerful nation on earth to the table, not the other way around.
Sure we should talk but the scorpion is still a scorpion.
Echospinner|4.21.18 @ 12:04AM|#
"Do not underestimate them."
They are so clever, they have starved to death at least 10% of the population.
Other than arm-waving, did you have a point?
Did you have a question?
Yes, and I see you can't read.
Their massive army is a paper tiger. Most troops have no ammu nition and little training. Their air Force and navy are jokes, most pilots get little to no flight time and the majority of the aircraft are obsolete junk. Armor too is mostly obsolete and a good portion of their small arms are WWII/Korean war surplus. Their artillery is also the same vintage. And most troops haven't been paid and are not regularly fed either.

Everything I've read supports this (got any suggested reading matter, s76?), and most of the army is involved in either construction efforts to keep stuff from falling down, working in the fields in the hopes of growing something to eat, or strong-arming beggars out of the platz.
If and when civilization gets a view of NK, I'm guessing it will be a real revelation regarding how commies run a place.
BTW, I see commie-kid hasn't been around. Did they repossess his computer for non-payment?
We are the mighty, a Facebook group for veterans tends to run quite a few articles on the real "threat" of the North Korean military. The National Interest also does decent defense reporting. To tell the truth I can't remember everything I have read on the subject, but it is not flattering for the NorK military (also the Chinese military bis not really well trained or equipped outside a few elite units).
"All Kim said was he was suspending tests and launches and that he doesn't need them anymore. He is closing, for now the test facility which is not all that big a deal."
You make suspending his nuclear weapons program and dropping his demands that the U.S. withdraw from South Korea as a prerequisite for talks almost sound like it's a bad thing. Is announcing that he's willing to discuss denuclearization a bad thing?
It isn't a bad thing. It's a new thing.
Books worth reading:
"North Korea Confidential", Tudor and Pearson, 2015. If anyone had a suggestion for a better overview, please post it.
"North Korea, State of Pranoia", Paul French, 2015. Emphasis on bogus econ desires and claims.
"North of the DMZ", the old (mostly reliable) Andrei Lankov. Trying to deal with reality while still hoping a commie state might succeed.
"Marching though Suffering; loss and survival in North Korea", Sandra Fahy. Very strange book, trying to square post-modern 'thought" with the reality of mass starvation, but the reality does leak through.
The "defector" books are of mixed quality and honesty, but even given some hyperbole, they are all reflect the horror of existence in NK, and the horror of escaping.
Yep. Mike Pompeo is totally unqualified because he's a religious, war mongering patriot.
Just ignore that he did more over Easter weekend to improve the Korean situation than anyone else in decades. Democrats and their propaganda machine will try to spin it as a disaster. Granted, President Trump's unorthodox style of diplomacy laid the groundwork, but Pompeo met with Kim.
It has also been rumored that the Saudis may be willing to openly embrace Isreal (they have for some time quietly, because of a shared enemy in Iran). At least some credit must go to Jared Kushner if that happens.
Didn't Ribbentropp meet with Molotov?
Sure, until they get what they want. We must have hit one of that chubby brute's cash flows pretty hard.
FREEZE, AND SURRENDER! How delightful to have the shoe on the other foot for a change...

I'm seeing a newly emerging meme, where people feel like they have to shit on denuclearization talks with North Korea if they don't like Trump. It seems to be all over the place right now.
I assure you, it'll still be okay to be against Trump--even if he succeeds in shutting down North Korea's nuclear program through peaceful negotiations. There's no need to root for the North Koreans--like you're Jane Fonda posing on a North Vietnamese antiaircraft gun. Can't you just oppose Trump for other reasons?
Hoping that the president is successful against our enemies through peaceful negotiations is something all reasonable Americans should hope for. Those who hope Trump fails at this are a liability to their political causes, whatever they are.
I shit on the denuke talks with NK because they are pointless. Any agreement that comes out of said talks will be worth less than used toilet paper, just like the Norks have ignored previous denuke agreements.
And oh yeah, I shit on the Iran nuke deal too. So stuff your leftist-style accusations of partisan motivation up your rear.

You are not Hihn. So just stop. I'm embarrassed for you.
Jesus, Hihn, China owns like 5.5% of our debt. Yes, hurt, no, not destroy.
I'm not sure why liars insist on lying. What is it that makes assholes like you tick?
They can destroy us in an instant.
They just haven't done so because those militaristic communists are just too peaceable. Yup yup.
"They can destroy us in an instant. They own a massive amount of our debt. Which means they own us."
Chicken Little, please report to Farmer Brown; he'd like dinner.
Certain banks own "massive amounts" of my debt, and the only way they can "destroy" me is to violate the terms of the contract.
I used to think you were mis-guided; now I know you're a fucking imbecile.
Also, that ignores every other economic factor. It would be suicide for CHINA to unload all of our debt. US debt, being a highly sought after commodity, would drop, sure, but would be gobbled up pretty quickly.
Hihn is a lying asshole. Full stop.
Pro-tip, Hihn:
Commies are better off masquerading as Republicans than they are libertarians. Your bullshit is transparent.
Hilarious. Maybe you're not a lying asshole, you're just an epic fucking idiot. Doesn't make much difference to me.
You moved the goalposts to publicly held debt, but even so, your numbers are STILL way the fuck off. And China still can't "destroy" us, you fucking moron. What happens to China if they sell of our debt? They're fucked. They can't exchange, they reduce the value of their currency, and they would put themselves in a situation where we could easily pile on and crush them.
Total US Debt: ~21 Trillion
Total US Public Debt: ~ 6 Trillion
China owns: 1.168 (January 2018)
So the percentage of total debt is: 5.5%
The percentage of public debt is: 7.8%
What is the Hihn bullshit ratio for all of that?
Correction: US Intra-governmental Debt is ~6 Trillion, so public debt is 15 Trillion.
Not sure why you think I care if you believe me to be a bully.
Hint: I don't.
You're still an asshole and a liar. Fuck off.

Which still supports none of you imbecilic fantasies.
Do you ever have a point, other than it takes you three tries to link a story which proves you wrong?
You apparently don't read your own sources all that well.
Per that link, 32% of the US national debt is held by various government programs and 68% is public.
"In total, China owns about 10% of publicly held U.S. debt."
Publicly held debt is 68% of the total debt. 10% of 68% is 6.8%
6.8% is a lot closer to the 5.5% claimed by TLBD than it is to the 13.8% you claimed.
"Same fallacy. That selling it is a threat."
