Sex trafficking is real and can happen to anyone at any age. I was trafficked in my mid 40's. I started hanging out with a bad crowd that I thought were my friends, but they got me hooked on vaping and then one day they took my vape pen so I went to the 7-11 to buy cigs and discovered I was low on cash so a guy there told me he'd give me a cig if I came with him and before I knew it I was in a seedy hotel room and they were pimping me out to men and women. They would beat me if I didn't perform and kept force feeding me vergara or something. I was humiliated but I couldn't speak out because I was too ashamed and thought it was all my fault and I would get in trouble with the police because the registration on my car was expired (mail mixup) and I didn't want to attract any attention. But I survived with the help of some brave people who saved me and helped me get back on my feet and clear up the dmv problems and now I speak out for other victims. Yes sex trafficking is real and can happen to anyone and you shouldn't make fun of it. You could be the next victim!

    1. Gaear Grimsrud   7 years ago

If you had renewed your registration like other responsible adults, you would not have fallen victim to these predators. Live like a scofflaw, get trafficed like a scofflaw.

I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.

This is totally something I could see one of my idiot FB friends sharing.

      1. Quo Usque Tandem   7 years ago

Not only would I unfriend such idiots, I would [and long ago did] avoid FB altogether. It's nothing but a platform for idiots to spout off. And for predators to scrape your information.

      Haha 10/10

    5. DajjaI   7 years ago

OK now I feel bad for distracting from the article. Which is pretty great. Also, you can basically do the same for 'drug addiction' or 'alcoholism', though you might have to scratch the surface a bit more. (And 'terrorism' and 'autism' but hey one step at a time.)

    6. Johnimo   7 years ago

Dajjal has posted what is, perhaps, the second greatest post of all time. I'd give it the number one spot, but can't because -- in my old age and advancing senility -- I might have overlooked some pretty terrific humor. "Dajjal" know what I mean?

      1. The ghOst of mcgOo   7 years ago

Agreed. Dajjal, you, sir or madame, have just won the internet for the day.

I get that they are worried the government will go after people who are simply trading services in the market.

The problem is that they're lumping child trafficking in with prostitution, just the same as the government goons they are supposedly against.

What is the motive for that? Does the editorial staff believe children should be able to prostitute themselves?

      1. DajjaI   7 years ago

Child trafficking is a real problem - in North Korea, Central America, and lots of other third world places. It's not a problem in the US. Yes it happens but it's extremely rare. That fact is obvious if you just scratch the surface of most of these alleged cases. The problem is when the government cracks down on free speech in order to 'prevent' it, because that only exacerbates the problem. This article does a pretty good job of exposing that dynamic, maybe try reading it next time.

        1. Johnimo   7 years ago

          OH, THE HUMANITY!

What is the motive for that? Does the editorial staff believe children should be able to prostitute themselves

        Yes.

      3. StackOfCoins   7 years ago

I'm mostly disgusted with the fact that women voluntarily engaged in sex work are being framed as "trafficking victims" for the purposes of driving prostitution into the underground. It is the most bizarre puritanism.

We are in the early dawn of legalizing weed in this country and law enforcement now has a totally new panic, as ridiculous and invented as "gateway drugs" to fret over. And stupid people are eating it up, because those in authority insist that children are being traded among elites like baseball cards.

        1. Kivlor   7 years ago

Yeah, I hate the term as it's used by law enforcement & advocates today. When I--and most of the people that I've asked--hear the term "human trafficking" I'm thinking of some girl who is being made to engage in prostitution against her will, or is otherwise being sold / treated as a slave. And that is not what these people mean.

Pretty much nobody has an issue with that being illegal. But tossing in every streetwalker or escort into that bin is disingenuous and does nothing but harm.

          1. MatthewSlyfield   7 years ago

I've read about cases where independent prostitutes without a pimp were charged with sex trafficking for "trafficking" themselves.

      4. nrob   7 years ago

This more or less proves my point that feminists don't mind being infantilized if it helps push the agenda.

        1. Paper Wasp   7 years ago

Truth. Feminist SJWs like to scream "don't you dare speak for me!" but don't seem to mind speaking at top volume on behalf of sex workers (voluntary or not).

The root of the entire crusade against paid sex work is jealousy and fear. Western feminists are apoplectic that men can ignore them, and purchase sex or form relationships without them. Technology now permits men (mostly men) to choose sex and/or partners on demand from an entire world of (mostly) women. In the eyes of the bitter, shrill, rejected feminist woman, this is a terrifying outrage. (LOL @ the mimosas bit: the loudmouthed feminist hag never met a mimosa or any other cocktail they didn't like way too much; it's one of the reasons their stock is declining.)

The only card they hold to fight this is to bait-and-switch every mention of sex work with "sex trafficking," focus public anger on that, then ally themselves with law enforcement entities who are eager to show off any sort of trophy kill to the public, regardless of its value to actual law and order.

      5. Quo Usque Tandem   7 years ago

"The problem is that they're lumping child trafficking in with prostitution," Well of course they are, because otherwise their numbers would be so small that hardly anyone would pay attention to them. And, of course, these crusaders know what is best for those women.

Yeah, I love when he posts. I started to get into Reason from his Elian Gonzales Raw Foods cover a few years ago.

Got to meet him at Emerald City Comic-Con and it was as great as it was incredibly awkward.

A lot of the issues that are fought against in the sex trade--mostly violence--could be fixed for the most part by legalizing it.

  7. Benitacanova   7 years ago

I know it's hard for most men to understand someone not wanting to have sex all day and get paid for the privilege, but they need to understand that (despite what trannies would have you believe), women are very different from men. Yes there are some who choose prostitution, but never enough to keep up with the demand. Sex trafficking is real and growing. If the tales of Rotterham, et al aren't enough to convince you, I guess, not to pry into your habits, you have a specific reason for your denial.

    1. Roger the Shrubber   7 years ago

Purposefully trying to confuse the issues of child sex trafficking and voluntary adult prostitution only serves to prove the point.

    2. Brian Dixon   7 years ago

... (despite what trannies would have you believe), women are very different from men.

How predictable. "Scratch a SWERF, get a TERF (and vice versa), every time," tweeted Dr. Brooke Magnanti.

      (SWERF: Sex Worker-Excluding Radical Feminist
      TERF: Transgender-Excluding Radical Feminist)

With all due respect for evolutionary psychology, I would much rather take sex workers' rights activists at their word than call them liars by invoking some abstract theory about what a woman's reproductive strategy is supposed to be. A woman, like a man, is firstly an individual and only secondly a member of a gender.

      1. mad.casual   7 years ago

A woman, like a man, is firstly an individual and only secondly a member of a gender.

How predictable. Jump on the libertarian train when it supports your pet analogized justice cause, jump off when it doesn't.

Being trans doesn't make you more of an individual than being a man or a woman strips you of it and, from a not-so-legal standpoint, it's rather obvious how it could *easily* make you less of a man, woman, or both.

      2. Zeb   7 years ago

And whatever evolutionary psychology might tell us about differences on average between the sexes, it's no justification for punishing consenting adults for engaging in a transaction involving sex.

    3. mad.casual   7 years ago

Yes there are some who choose prostitution, but never enough to keep up with the demand.

This isn't even remotely true. Between physical limitations, psychological force of will, and legal oppression, the legal oppression is overwhelmingly the 500 lbs. gorilla in the room. Women performers outnumber men by more than 2:1 in the porn industry and female prostitutes outnumber males (who tend to start younger) on the order of 4:1. The only way you even begin to believe such a notion is if you inherently rob women of the agency to desire sex and/or automatically transfer that desire to men. Certainly, if you brought all the women I knew when I was single together for one night, they could never match my sweet imagination. But most of us, men and women, work through those sorts of fantasies by the time we're 25-30.

I know it's hard for most men to understand someone not wanting to have sex all day and get paid for the privilege

I know it's hard for some women to imagine that men and boys do, in fact, turn down sex for lots and lots of reasons; many of which overlap heavily with women's reasons, but it's more fun just to pretend you're stupid Venusian princess, right?

    4. Zeb   7 years ago

I don't want to go to my job every day, but I do.

You are just making assertions and providing no evidence, just like the anti-trafficking activists in the article (or whatever you call it when it's a comic).

    5. Fuzzyedia   7 years ago

I know it's hard for authoritarians like yourself to understand, but there are all kinds of people out there who do all kinds of stuff you wouldn't understand, or choose to do. That alone should not make the behavior criminal.

The solution is not to suspend the Bill of Rights and mass incarceration, even if your endorphins are telling you that feels right. It's at a minimum talk to actual active sex workers (not paid victim advocates, not oil heiress donors with their own deep emotional problems) and to tolerate their autonomy of adults who don't agree with you.

You are confused because you start from a wrong premise and end up with a shit sandwich of bad conclusion that are dangerous to a constitution democracy.

You should not be asking why someone would do something you don't. or can't understand. You should be asking why they would not do something else, which is most likely because of all their available options, sex work is the best choice. Criminalization of the process only makes those options fewer.

Starting from that premise will prevent to from arriving at the same false sex work dichotomy the "why should you care about these other ladies" King County District Attorney arrived at for the same wrong reasons.

You see, in his paternalistic view, there are 1% of sex worker women (they are always women in his world) who are happy hookers.

      1. Fuzzyedia   7 years ago

That is, they own a personal Lear Jet they use to travel the world, having sex with good looking multi-millionaires at the Ritz for $100,000. When the are working, they are skipping down the road and shouting "I am a sex worker and proud of it!" in the face of total strangers who pass them on the street.

The other 99% are all trafficked, especially of the are brown and have an accent.

He's a DA so gets paid to see incarceration of victimless crimes as a social good, but unless you are also on the take from the rescue industry, you can afford to accept complexity in your life that does not always lead to a jail cell. You don't need to support the criminalization of behavior that is none of your damn business.

    6. marshaul   7 years ago

I know it's hard for most women to understand someone not wanting to work for someone else all day and get paid for the privilege, but they need to understand that men are very different from women. Yes there are some men who choose to work, but never enough to keep up with the demand for labor. Slave trafficking is real and growing. If tales of Sierra Leone, et al aren't enough to convince you, I guess, not to pry into your habits, you have a specific reason for your denial.

    7. Paper Wasp   7 years ago

Prostitution is already against the law almost everywhere. Sex trafficking of both minors and adults is illegal everywhere. So is rape. So I'm not sure what you want to happen here.

The conflation of sex trafficking with prostitution and other sex work (cam girls, anyone?) is really doing a big disservice to any respect LEO's might still have.
