A California high school teacher was fired for calling American military troops "freaking stupid" and "the lowest of our low."

The teacher, Gregory Salcido, is also a city council member. At the time he made his controversial remarks, he was talking with his history class at El Rancho High School about why the wars in the Middle East had dragged on. According to a student's audio recording, Salcido said: "We have a bunch of dumb shits over there. Think about the people who you know who are over there. Your freaking stupid Uncle Louie or whatever. They're dumb asses. They're not like high-level thinkers, they're not academic people, they're not intellectual people. They're the lowest of our low."

The comments quickly went viral, drawing strong rebukes from veterans—including White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired general, who said, "I think the guy ought to go to hell."

Salcido's comments were publicized in January. He was placed on leave pending an investigation. This week, he was fired. El Rancho Board of Education President Aurora Villon said, "the classroom should never be a place where students feel that they are picked at, bullied, intimidated."

But as far as I can tell, Salcido wasn't bullying any specific member of his classroom. Is he not allowed to criticize the military, and the endless wars our servicemen are forced to fight? Can we not have such a discussion in a high school history classroom without everyone losing thier minds?

Any conservative who makes fun of liberal students demanding safe spaces, but then turns around and says people who question the troops should lose their jobs, is being awfully hypocritical. This controversy is the Mirror Universe twin of the Amy Wax kerfuffle, in which conservatives defended an educator who was accused of saying racially insensitive things, and liberals called for her head. Political correctness afflicts both sides of the political spectrum.

I think historic accuracy and stereotypes are an issue in this case. "The Mismeasure of Man" by Stephen Gould documents a long history of unreliable intelligence tests starting with the culturally biased ones used to send Southern and Eastern Europeans to the front lines in WWI instead of the officer training camps. At the time, military leaders complained that the government was sending stupid WASPs to officer training camps instead of sending them people with knowledge and skills that are related to planning battles.

We should also consider the draft exemption given to college students during the Vietnam War. It was based on the assumption that the battle field is only appropriate for less intellectual people. Even when racism became taboo and we stopped assuming that some races were smarter than others, many educators believed that some people are born less capable of intellect than others, hence the concept of learning disabilities and the practice of removing standardized test scores from "learning disabled" students before calculating the school's average before No Child Left Behind.

So, yeah. Firing a history teacher for saying that military personnel are stupid makes sense, just like it makes sense to fire a biology teacher for saying that biological evolution is a myth.

In July that year, Salcido was placed on temporary leave and later suspended after a parent complained that the teacher threatened his daughter, made inappropriate comments about race and insulted other students and parents. Salcido denied the accusations, saying his comments were taken out of context.

At the time, the student, Savannah Kelly, said she was talking to a classmate when Salcido said, "shut up Kelly before I kill you."

2012: Salcido was again placed on leave after hitting a 15-year-old El Rancho student who put his head down in class.

He could have "criticized the military" in a different way. The goose/gander concern is fair enough. It's possible the CTA contract makes it easier to fire a teacher for "bullying" than to discipline one for substituting a personal opinion for instruction.

And there was no "discussion". I had the pleasure of learning from some HS instructors who encouraged discussion, but nothing here suggests anything of the sort. You can have that discussion in a history classroom; but as a teacher you have a position of authority and shouldn't be using it to impose or indoctrinate your political or philosophical viewpoint into your students, particularly if you're teaching in a publicly funded school. Nope. This guy wasn't critiquing policy or the actions of public individuals, he was dividing out a specific group of Americans and simply insulting them, calling them dumbest people ever. The argument that that should be comparable to reasonable criticism is silly. This guy should be fired, or at least suspended, if he said this in a classroom about anybody: a political party, people who use facebook, people who smoke weed, commentors on Reason.com, whoever.

It's especially egregious because it's simply not true, and there's almost certainly a kid in that class that has a loved one that serves or has served. I'm a vet, if someone said this in my kid's classroom I'd show up with my diploma and cram it down his throat.

This isn't a free speech issue, it's a bad-at-your-job issue. Nobody's proposing this ass go to prison, but discipline up to and including dismissal is entirely appropriate. He can preach his stupid prejudice on the street corner with all the other morons, without collecting a paycheck from veterans.

He is certainly allowed to "to criticize the military, and the endless wars our servicemen are forced to fight" but even by your own account that's not what he did. What he did in fact do was slander people who serve in the military (which is not a constitutionally protected right), bully students who choose to pursue a career in service, and expose himself for being the idiot he condemns. His hubris is so poetic.

This article might actually convince someone who wasn't familiar with the incident, and who couldn't be bothered to take the two minutes needed to watch the video of the incident and realize that the "teacher" was being abusive to a specific student, and a couple of more minutes to read the coverage of the controversy and realize that this abusive creep had a past history of unprofessional behavior in the classroom.
