Political Correctness Strikes Again: High School Teacher Fired for Offensive Comments About Troops
"The classroom should never be a place where students feel that they are picked at, bullied, intimidated."

A California high school teacher was fired for calling American military troops "freaking stupid" and "the lowest of our low."
The teacher, Gregory Salcido, is also a city council member. At the time he made his controversial remarks, he was talking with his history class at El Rancho High School about why the wars in the Middle East had dragged on. According to a student's audio recording, Salcido said: "We have a bunch of dumb shits over there. Think about the people who you know who are over there. Your freaking stupid Uncle Louie or whatever. They're dumb asses. They're not like high-level thinkers, they're not academic people, they're not intellectual people. They're the lowest of our low."
The comments quickly went viral, drawing strong rebukes from veterans—including White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired general, who said, "I think the guy ought to go to hell."
Salcido's comments were publicized in January. He was placed on leave pending an investigation. This week, he was fired. El Rancho Board of Education President Aurora Villon said, "the classroom should never be a place where students feel that they are picked at, bullied, intimidated."
But as far as I can tell, Salcido wasn't bullying any specific member of his classroom. Is he not allowed to criticize the military, and the endless wars our servicemen are forced to fight? Can we not have such a discussion in a high school history classroom without everyone losing thier minds?
Any conservative who makes fun of liberal students demanding safe spaces, but then turns around and says people who question the troops should lose their jobs, is being awfully hypocritical. This controversy is the Mirror Universe twin of the Amy Wax kerfuffle, in which conservatives defended an educator who was accused of saying racially insensitive things, and liberals called for her head. Political correctness afflicts both sides of the political spectrum.

WHERE ARE THE LINKS FUCKERS
Soave is a monster.
Reason doesn't want to do links otherwise they'd have to talk about the UK shitstorm.
Just the whole idea of the UK?
At this point, yes.
Well, as I consistently say here, fuck Europe in general.
fuck Europe
Wait in line cause they are too busy fucking themselves.
Aw, shit, did Prince Harry skin another prostitute?
I thought maybe Kate rampaged through another pre school with a machete.
Oh, well, what's the big deal then? A flighty bunch, limeys.
She was just trying to feed her bloodlust.
When the local hospitals run out of transfusion bags, you do what you have to do, man.
I assumed Fist would post his own links at this point.
Ed was the oil in the PM Links machine. Just wait until you see what happens to ReasonTV without Heaton.
He had a video today, one last one to taunt me.
It was a good finale. Too bad Bragg slept with Sarah and ruined it.
(You see how the rumor mill churns when there are no facts Reason!?)
I heard it was a devil's threesome.
Is that a threesome while listening to Screaming For Vengeance?
Isn't that a Holy Trinity?
Huh, I'd missed that, pretty hilarious stuff. Maybe there's hope he'll stick around for random videos like that. Did it say anywhere specifically that he was leaving for sure?
No, but Gillespie keeps sending me letters telling me he hates me, so I assume he's just trying to hurt me.
Well in his defense, Nick is a libertarian... and somewhat socially awkward as a result. So maybe that's just his way of saying thank you for supporting Reason.
Link to my post below, with La Wik link, which contains all sorts of info that The Narrative left out.
This article is *much* worse than the usual Narrative First crap journalism we've come to expect from the Progressitarians on staff at Reason.
The cancer spreads.

A California high school teacher was fired for calling American military troops "freaking stupid" and "the lowest of our low."
He's got a bright future as a guidance counselor, though.
Sure.
I just wonder where you question is relevant with this "We have a bunch of dumb shits over there. Think about the people who you know who are over there. Your freaking stupid Uncle Louie or whatever. They're dumb asses. They're not like high-level thinkers, they're not academic people, they're not intellectual people. They're the lowest of our low."
I am not seeing criticism of the military and their endless wars they are forced to fight.
And, until it is allowed for all groups, why the hell should anybody permit it? The only way to make a dumb law hurt is to make everybody suffer under it.
They're not like high-level thinkers, they're not academic people, they're not intellectual people. They're the lowest of our low.
Smug factor = perceived intelligence / actual intelligence
From a High School history teacher, no less.
High School history teacher thinks military are not "high level thinkers". Pot meet kettle.
Every officer in every branch has a masters degree.
BS!!!! Lower-ranking ossifers like 2nd & 1st Lt.s and lower-seniority captains only have BS degrees... So you just earned yerself a BS Bull Shit degree!!!
There are lot's of officers who never earn a Master's. It's not (officially) required in the Navy (as far as I know - though there is certainly a push to require one for senior enlisted and officer ranks) but it will give you a leg up in some specialties when it comes to promotion.
However - a lot of the time the services don't care *what your degree is in*, only that you have one.
Dude, it was a public school teacher insulting a high school student in class. My God, man, you are really reaching to support this "both sides" narrative
My God, man,
Check out, Commandant Comma, over here.
What are you, now, working as a cashier?
The Commadore?
No one likes a one-upper.
Go suck vet dick elsewhere
Where is the available vet dick? Asking for a friend...
I once listened to My War by Black Flag, is that close enough?
I tried letting you suck mine, but you managed to be as incompetent at that as you are at everything else.
It was a ploy to get you to show him "how it's done."
I tried that too. But he is untrainable.
Depends. Are you looking for a WW2 vet dick, a Vietnam vet dick, an Iraqi vet dick, or something else?
An animal doctor.
Drive down to your nearest busy intersection.
I guess you got tired of running this sock.
Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
Believe it bitch.
Pirate Truther > Mary Stack > Tulpa
Don't clown yourself.
Ew.
I'm educated!! I swear!! And you're a goober!!!
I guess masquerading as one of your betters was a natural progression from masquerading as a libertarian.
Carry on, clinger mini-me.
No fucking way. I thought Mary / Tulpa was a thing of the past, never to be seen again
this is what happens when Reason doesn't post the PM lynx. YOU'VE DONE THIS TO US THROUGH YOUR FAILURE WELCH
I have a hard time believing either of those names are available.
Clearly, it is the work pf sneaky Russian hackers.
don't check says that is not the real tulpa. i dont know how you fake mary stack though.
You clearly weren't here for it then, she never went by Mary Stack on Reason.
Right, there are no "both sides" here. If the teacher wanted to have a debate about the military, the draft, etc, that's fine. Using profanity and attacking a student with a military t-shirt is unacceptable.
Teachers like him are the reason many of us hate public schools. Those places are CIC's (Commie Indoctrination Centers).
I think the specific language he used is more the problem given that students that use those words are probably sent to detention, at the very least. When the teachers do that, well, detention might not be enough.
Being fired might have been a bit much, but at the same time you should probably expect a little better from a teacher who is also a city councilman.
It is a decorum issue. Take the veteran thing out of it. Suppose a student's father or brother played in the NFL and this guy said "NFL players are generally thugs with low IQs and violent criminal tendencies. Would that be okay? Would Robby be on here claiming the scourge of PC if the school fired the guy? I seriously doubt it. The same thing is true here. Saying someone shouldn't be an ass is not the same thing as PC. But claiming that it is, is one of the more common dodges PC supporters use. Let me get my shocked face that Robby uses it here.
This guy gets it.
Robby just wrote a piece about the forces of PC taking down a Penn Law professor who said block people do poorly in her classes. I doubt he'd have any problems with criticizing the firing of a teacher for calling NFL players stupid thugs.
That law professor was correct. This high school teacher was not.
That is the difference between the two.
I was in the Army. Some of my fellow soldiers were total dumb asses, some were brilliant.
Having some douche bag progressive spouting bullshit to a captive class room of teenagers is not the same as a college professor talking to her peers.
I think historic accuracy and stereotypes are an issue in this case. "The Mismeasure of Man" by Stephen Gould documents a long history of unreliable intelligence tests starting with the culturally biased ones used to send Southern and Eastern Europeans to the front lines in WWI instead of the officer training camps. At the time, military leaders complained that the government was sending stupid WASPs to officer training camps instead of sending them people with knowledge and skills that are related to planning battles.
We should also consider the draft exemption given to college students during the Vietnam War. It was based on the assumption that the battle field is only appropriate for less intellectual people. Even when racism became taboo and we stopped assuming that some races were smarter than others, many educators believed that some people are born less capable of intellect than others, hence the concept of learning disabilities and the practice of removing standardized test scores from "learning disabled" students before calculating the school's average before No Child Left Behind.
So, yeah. Firing a history teacher for saying that military personnel are stupid makes sense, just like it makes sense to fire a biology teacher for saying that biological evolution is a myth.
"It was based on the assumption that the battle field is only appropriate for less intellectual people."
That's a dumb assumption. Besides, if you have a college degree, you can join the military as an OFFICER. Those kids who graduate from West Point join as lieutenants. The minute they pass basic training, their drill sergeants have to salute them. It's the funniest thing in the world, like having a bully suddenly change his ways and kiss your ass.
The military loves doctors, nurses, engineers, etc. There's even places for human resources, logistics, truck drivers, journalists, even reverends are welcomed.
Maybe the draft created those exceptions for those reasons. Besides, the teacher is an idiot, each military occupation service (MOS) has different standards for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). A friend of mine was rejected because his math score was too low, so this idea that the military welcomes morons and idiots is BS. Some MOS's require high scores in science, math, technology, etc.
The educrats will tell you (if you let them) that, given enough taxpayer money, they can take a Down's Syndrome child, and turn him or her into a competent lawyer, doctor, engineer, astronaut, etc. Just GIVE US MORE MONEY!!! WE CAN DO ANYTHING!!!!
Fortunately, we have data on this.
Average IQ for enlisted men was 105 in 1998 according to the DoD, so above average.
Average IQ for officers is about 122, higher than education majors or history majors.
So, yeah, it "makes sense".
Average IQ of enlisted men is 105 according to the DoD. Average IQ of officers is 122, higher than history majors or education majors.
So, his and your beliefs aren't true even on average, let alone for individuals.
Um, Mark. I'm in favor of firing the teacher, because I disagree with his low opinion of military personnel.
"The Mismeasure of Man" is a horrible book. It's one of the examples of Gould's downfall--one of the books in which he let politics override science.
Sadly, for Stephen J Gould, that slippery slope was frictionless.
His behavior in class makes him unfit to teach.
The firing was justified.
I don't believe the firing was justified. The guy acted like an ass, and I'd support a suspension through the end of the school year on the basis that his students should expect him to be somewhat objective in a classroom setting, or at least conducting a mature discussion, rather than trashing their relatives like STEVE SMITH in a public campground.
But taking away his livelihood is a bridge too far, IMO, although I suppose he may not have a lot of trouble finding work elsewhere.
2010: Salcido serves another year as mayor. In July that year, Salcido was placed on temporary leave and later suspended after a parent complained that the teacher threatened his daughter, made inappropriate comments about race and insulted other students and parents. Salcido denied the accusations, saying his comments were taken out of context.
At the time, the student, Savannah Kelly, said she was talking to a classmate when Salcido said, "shut up Kelly before I kill you."
2012: Salcido was again placed on leave after hitting a 15-year-old El Rancho student who put his head down in class.
I don't agree and it's not the first time there have been complaints regarding his "teaching".
This is the kind of individual that should not be in the classroom.
His firing has nothing to do with PC and everything to do with his behavior around students.
His firing has nothing to do with PC and everything to do with his behavior around students.
If that was the case, those first two incidents show far greater justification. Making actual threats and striking students are a hell of a lot worse offenses than ranting about military members.
If that was the case, those first two incidents show far greater justification. Making actual threats and striking students are a hell of a lot worse offenses than ranting about military members.
His tirade was directed against one of his students who had the temerity to wear a sweatshirt with a Marine logo. He singled out a student in front of his class to be the target of his bile.
From the other incidents I'd guess this guy is a creep and a bully, but probably only with kids.
I'm guessing he'd be a lot more circumspect around actual Marines.
Would you want your kid to be taught by someone who behaved like this around students?
I hope they revoke his teaching credentials.
Maybe this was the first time the kids got him on tape.
As someone that knows nothing about this, other than this article, I agree.
Though I'd also expect the classroom to be open to equallly "blunt" views, in disagreement or otherwise.
And after learning more about this, it appears the story left out the key parts.
Congrats, Reason, for rising to the level of "fucking worthless."
My livelihood has been taken away from me many times. I've been fired from every job I've ever had in advertising. Sometimes for spelling mistakes, sometimes for not getting along with people, sometimes because the agency lost the account. So don't tell me that some commie teacher deserves better.
These commie teachers are the worst, they all think they're underpaid, never mind those bastards make $50,000+ a year (sometimes more), get more vacation, get a pension, and get to retire early.
The issue is that he was berating a student who was wearing a military t-shirt. Not to mention he had already been disciplined previously for similar action in his classroom.
The US military (especially officers) is more educated than the general public. This guy's a fucktard.
Salcido should be canned. I'm no fan of the military apparatus, but I don't support or even understand the animosity towards individuals who are pledging a substantial portion of their young lives to thankless service for McDonald wages (when you factor in these guys are on-call 24-7 and doing dangerous shit, it's less than minimum wage for people without stripes).
As a public school teacher, in a classroom on the clock, Salcido should be policing his speech; keep it neutral and focus on teaching. He's clearing incapable of getting off his soapbox. Dunning-Kruger in full effect here. Kick this asshole to the curb.
And Soave, wow. You should stick to the campus rape allegation beat.
They don't get McDonald's wages - even taking in danger and work hours.
Even junior members of the military are compenstated pretty darn well. $2k a month, housing, food, full medical and dental. Full medical for dependents. Pro pay. Another $150 and tax free income while in hostile fire zone.
All for an E3 with less than 2 years in. Most will be E4 or E5 by 4-5 years.
"We have a bunch of dumb shits over there. Think about the people who you know who are over there. Your freaking stupid Uncle Louie or whatever. They're dumb asses.
===
You could have just as well led with the "dumb shits" and "dumb asses" part, which provides a "manner" issue more so than calling them "stupid" and the "lowest of the low." The "time/place" is issue being is he said this in class.
He could have "criticized the military" in a different way. The goose/gander concern is fair enough. Calling family members "a bunch of dumb shits" can be seen as being picked on etc. True his comment is general. But, a LAT article on the firing did note: "Salcido's rant appears to have been in reaction to a student wearing a Marines shirt."
Nonetheless, especially if it is merely on his remarks in one incident, this shouldn't have been a firing offense.
If a guy gets that set off by seeing a kid's tee shirt, he is too much of a goddam snowflake to be teaching our little snowflakes to be even snowflakier.
Good thing he got his ass fired. It was for the children.
Robby forgets to tell everyone that the remarks were directed at a student wearing a military t-shirt. Not to mention that this wasn't the first incident and the teacher had been disciplined in the past for similar actions.
I agree that he should not have been fired. At the same time I'm having a terribly hard time working up any sympathy for him. The problem is not him getting fired, the problem is a government school system where every firing has to be political. In a private school he would never have been hired.
my understanding is the teacher started his rant when he noticed a student wearing a 'Marines' sweatshirt, and ended it by saying something like 'never wear that in my class again.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lb-2EGFzN44 for the student's video
So he was bullying. Color me shocked this was not in he write up.

1. He should not have been fired. Disciplined? Yes, but see below. What he did is an example of *shitty teaching* -- he also happens to have chosen the wrong target. It's possible the CTA contract makes it easier to fire a teacher for "bullying" than to discipline one for substituting a personal opinion for instruction.
2. This is a great example of what progressive educators mean when they say teachers should foster "critical thinking skills" rather than teach "rote facts." A "rote fact" is a fact that someone remembers, I guess?
3. Amy Wax -- a law professor teaching at university -- is wholly irrelevant to the in-class behavior of a high school (or lower) teacher.
4. Unless this guy moves to Berkeley, San Francisco, or some other SJW enclave it's unlikely he'll ever win another election.
What he did is an example of *shitty teaching*
I wouldn't call it teaching. More like taking advantage of a captive audience for his snotty posturing. Ideally, this should result in the students walking out and finding better teachers elsewhere.
-jcr
Oh no, he should be fired. I would probably be at risk for firing if I bad-mouthed one of my customers to another customer, which is the best analogue I can think of here. I don't see how the first amendment is in play here. He may be a government employee, but it's the WAY he did it. He could have said, "I don't think the military is handling the situation well. The executive department is directing them, but they're not executing." Something boring like that. But he decided to insult them in a vulgar manner.
The diatribe appears to have been in reaction to a student wearing a Marines shirt or sweatshirt.
"You better not freaking go," Salcido says in one recording. "Don't wear that in here."
Two minutes to find the above and correct Soave's journalism.
But as far as I can tell, Salcido wasn't bullying any specific member of his classroom.
Any conservative who makes fun of liberal students demanding safe spaces, but then turns around and says people who question the troops should lose their jobs, is being awfully hypocritical.
Either that or they figured out what works. Roll around on the ground holding your knee and get the other player a red card. Funny that.
Seriously guys, we need to not imitate Spain of all things.
You can't make leftists live by their own rules. You are supposed to roll over and lose as they apply double standards and never live by the rules they apply to you. Then you get to feel good about how principled you are. Don't you know how this works?
The quickest way to end bad rules is to apply them equally to everyone.
Ayn Rand encouraged her followers to apply for government help, because they were never given the option of opting out of the tax and spend system. We can demand that left-wingers watch their words and hold civil conversations when they are employed by the government to teach kids.

But eventually, I grew up and realized what a total cop-out this question is. Guys, take it from me: women don't want you to ask them if they had an orgasm after you have sex. Because when you do that, you're implicitly telling them that their pleasure is, quite literally, an afterthought for you. And there's nothing less sexy than that.
Proof that you can't win. Just hit it and flip on the tv after.

Or, 'can you make me a sangwich before you leave.'
False equivalence with the safe space crowd. This dipshit absolutely was bullying a student and figured he could get away with it because teachers are almost never fired.
"Political Correctness Strikes Again: High School Teacher Fired for Offensive Comments About Troops

I don't believe that's about political correctness.
In plenty of places, referring to our troops as people who deserve our respect might be considered politically incorrect.
Referring to white, blue collar, middle class people as "stupid rednecks" isn't politically incorrect either. It may be disgusting and stupid, but it isn't politically incorrect.
This firing has nothing to with PC and everything to do with teacher behavior in the classroom that should be totally unacceptable.

Normally when an article is written on a pol, party affiliation is prominently displayed. Wanna guess?
Here is La Wik on
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Salcido
They seem to have managed to discover Salcido's party affiliation.
They also managed to discover that this is far from Salcido's first rodeo. Multiple controversies with this guy. Including allegations of racism against white students, a threat to kill a student, and striking another student.
Here is an interesting fact:
"In January 2018, a student recorded a video in his classroom of Salcido lecturing about the U.S. military after Salcido noticed a student wearing a Marine Corps shirt. "
Funny how The Hair didn't mention any of that. Almost like he was working a Narrative, and those facts didn't fit it.
Reason: Salon journalism, quickly heading for HuffPo
"We have a bunch of dumb shits over there. Think about the people who you know who are over there. Your freaking stupid Uncle Louie or whatever. They're dumb asses. They're not like high-level thinkers, they're not academic people, they're not intellectual people. They're the lowest of our low."
In case it wasn't clear to you, the Leftist pols have nothing but contempt and hatred for you.
Deplorable, irredeemable, etc.,
"But as far as I can tell, Salcido wasn't bullying any specific member of his classroom."
It might look that way to people unaware that the tirade began "after Salcido noticed a student wearing a Marine Corps shirt."
Hence, The Narrative.
Maybe I was too hard on The Hair
Maybe it was just a typo
He meant to type:
"But as far as I *care to* tell..."
I wish there was a libertarian website to read news on...
Instead of a diatribe against veterans, turn his words into a diatribe against blacks. Or gays. Or women. How long would he have lasted in those circumstances?
Based on the quotes provided, he was not arguing about national policy. He was not making some kind of substantive philosophical or educational point. The man's a bigot. He was making inflammatory and prejudiced pejoratives against a protected class.
So here's your consistency. If it's appropriate to fire a bigot for saying insufferably stupid and prejudiced things about blacks or gays or women or (insert favored minority here), then it's equally appropriate to fire this bigot. If you think he should not have been fired, then you need to learn to tolerate all the people who want to be equally inflammatory about other minorities.
There are legitimate arguments for disciplining Amy Wax, and legitimate arguments for disciplining this guy, but the arguments for disciplining this guy are stronger.
He was on the clock, supposedly teaching students, when he went into a rant which didn't seem organically linked to his history-teaching duties.
As for prof. Wax, if she disclosed personally-identifiable data about students, that would be the basis for discipline
- though the dean denied disciplining her - but if she's guilty so is the dean, since they both spoke in general terms about the academic standing of black students in the law school. And if (as alleged) Wax wasn't telling the truth, then you can't very well say she was disclosing anything!
And prof. Wax was speaking in off-campus forums, as part of her scholarly work which to a professor is just as key as her teaching duties (more so, often, in practice).
Dipshit guy was supposed to be teaching history, and he takes time he was supposed to spend on that and uses the time to insult people in vulgar terms.
Robby because there always will be example of 'double standard' or even hypocrisy on 'both sides' on many issues. The question is to what degree and how prevalent it is. I find you're attempts at searching for 'equivalent' examples from conservatives behaving badly and shouting 'you see? JUST AS BAD!' to be tiresome and weak.
Sure, I agree. Not cool what happened here but until conservatives rise to what we see from the left, tickle me unimpressed.
And I think you know this.
Don't worry. You're good looking enough to keep getting invites to cocktail parties.
It would seem to me that Mr Salcido should have been removed as a teacher because of his intellectual snobbery. As far as our involvement in the middle east goes, the "dumb shits" and "Stupid Uncle Louis'" and "dumb asses" he seems to blame for all of our problems didnt go there on their own. The "dumb shits' and "dumb asses" dont devise or implement American diplomatic and military policy. Those are devised and implemented by the very " high-level thinkers", "academic people", and "intellectual people" Mr Salcido idolizes and no doubt considers himself the equal to. You know, the political class. The failures in the middle east and our too long involvement in that area of the world belong to the highly educated. Not the "dumb asses" who pay for those failures in blood.
We do choose to go over there. We're not conscripts. Sure, we don't make policy - but we implement it. Voluntarily. We're no less to blame than cops are for enforcing prohibition.
Your website lists you as a navy veteran. Maybe the navy gave you more flexibility. As an army veteran, I did not "choose" to go anywhere. I chose to enlist (and repeatedly to re-up) but once I swore the oath, I had no say whatsoever in where I was sent. And as long as the orders were legal, I had no say in the policy I was ordered to implement. I carried out policies that I thought were counter-productive and even wrong-headed. But they were not illegal so I did my job. (I did refuse one illegal order but thankfully, that situation only came up the once during my career.)
Re: cops and prohibition - You're right. The cops weren't to blame for prohibition. And nobody sane says or ever said that they were. But to the extent that you do think they were to blame, it's an unfair comparison. Police have the option to quit at any time with no penalty beyond the possible loss of a pension. Servicemembers have no such luxury. They are compelled to serve until their term is up.
This is typical of the garbage from Robby.
Note what's missing here? There's no "to be sure this speech was vile" or insulting or inappropriate in the the setting. Nope, all we get is "controversial" and "why can't we criticize the military in the classroom?" And then we get the false equivalence between Wax and this idiot. Amy Wax wrote an op-ed outside of the classroom. This asshat conducted his political (I'm being generous here) diatribe in front of a classroom of captive students. He was directly triggered by a t-shirt one of the students was wearing which said "Marines." See the difference? Robby doesn't because he desperately needs that equivalence.
"Don't you ever freakin bring the freakin military into this classroom."
You mean the way he did? And exactly what discussion was allowed here?
This is the most dishonest garbage I've seen in a long time. Fuck off, Robby.
The dishonesty is bigger than you know.
See my post above
A glance at the guy's Wikipedia page shows a long history of crap relevant to these events, and particulars of the event Robby left out.
It's really #FakeNews The Narrative journalism.
Reason should show some dignity and shitcan his ass.
Reason don't care what you think. Their leftist donors pay the bills.
While we feed, house, and subsidize Caesar's cannon fodder and their mass murdering escapades.
Damn, are you the same Libertymike from before?
Regardless, soon enough we'll have enough robots to do all our mass murdering without almost any cannon fodder to to subsidize. Then we'll finally be able to not fret over the incredible moral cost to our endless military escapades.
Any robot capable of replacing a human combatant would have to be equal or superior in intelligence, which A, probably isn't happening any time soon and B, would just replace the problem of human casualties with one of slave labor (assuming the robots accept this, of course.)
And drones controlled remotely by human beings can easily be rendered inert by broad-spectrum jamming, so in an actual war with a near-peer like Russia or China, our Predators and Reapers would be almost useless.
Intelligent =\= self aware.
If it's not self-aware, it's not smart enough to replace a human. Pretty hard to be aware of your surroundings when you're not aware of yourself.
Insects do it. Plenty of more complicated animals do it. Robots do it.
That your list consists entirely of organisms less intelligent than humans, should give you some pause.
Perhaps I should have specified "it's pretty hard to be as aware of your surroundings as a human soldier when you're not aware of yourself".
This is the most dishonest garbage I've seen in a long time. Fuck off, Robby.
Agree, it's a new low. It's more than shoddy journalism, I'm pretty damn sure Robby must have known about the previous two instances of his behavior around students that led to suspensions and being placed on leave, i.e targeting a student with racial epithets and threatening to kill her and hitting a student, but left all that out 'cause it doesn't fit the script. And if he didn't know his research skills are abysmal since the information is there in practically every news item on this story.
In this latest incident he specifically targeted a student in front of his class because the student was wearing a sweatshirt with a marine logo and directed a foul mouthed tirade at him. A student that apparently wants to become a Marine. Salcido is obviously a creep and a bully. He was fired because of his totally unprofessional behavior in the classroom and around students, it had nothing to do with any PC crap.
Salcido should be stripped of his teaching credentials and Reason needs to raise their game.
There is absolutely no reason to give this hack the benefit of the doubt given his history. He NEEDS this to be true or the whole narrative falls apart.
There is absolutely no reason to give this hack the benefit of the doubt given his history. He NEEDS this to be true or the whole narrative falls apart.
What especially is galling and irritating is that even though Reason is a libertarian publication and has a clearly stated ideological point of view my impression is that the journalism here is usually honest and has integrity, Sullum, Bailey, Doherty etc...
In a free society, students should not be shielded from teachers who criticize those who sign up to be Caesar's killers. Even if he insults them. Even if he does so with vulgarity.
Kids are bombarded with pro-military propaganda. Its okay to counter that.
In a free society teachers should not be able to compel students to listen to them. Apparently forced indoctrination is A-OK these days.
So students should be free to walk out of the classroom whenever a teacher offends their fragile sensibilities?
So a teacher is well within their rights to spend an entire period saying "Sarcasmic is a pig fucker and only dumbshits talk to Sarcasmic?" This wasn't presenting any idea. This wasn't challenging the students. This was spewing his political opinions. Apparently you think that's OK as long as it doesn't involve melanin content.
Apparently you think that's OK as long as it doesn't involve melanin content.
Do you still beat your wife?
"*hint*
People don't choose to be black. People choose to be soldiers. Not even comparable."
Funny, musta been some other Sarcasmic who wrote that.
Funny, musta been some other Sarcasmic who wrote that.
Yeah, so? I didn't make any judgement on either. I only that it was a lousy comparison..
Do you believe intelligence is a choice? Because his whole thesis (again being generous with all his intellectualism) is that the people who go into the military are dumbshits. Not that the choice is stupid, they, themselves, are stupid.
"Don't you ever freakin bring the freakin military into my classroom."
Remind me whose fragile sensibilities were offended here again?
Remind me whose fragile sensibilities were offended here again?
Yours, apparently.
Guess your mirror is a tad dusty.
Kids are bombarded with pro-military propaganda. Its okay to counter that.
I'm fine with that and I'm sure it's happening in many public schools but what Salcido did in no way even approximated that. He just unleashed a tirade of profanity directed at a particular student in front of the entire class and ordered him never to come to come back to his class wearing that sweatshirt. That kind of behavior from a teacher, much less a student, should be totally unacceptable in the classroom.
What criticism? It was just a progtarded imsultfest. And they should be shielded from that.
Thanks to you and others for checking this out.
He was verbally abusive to this student and has a past history of it.
Three strikes and you are out. It has and should happen where most of us work.
The authoritarians want teaching to be a protected profession.
No way, if you are abusive or incompetent you go like the rest of us.
If I did this with a customer or client once I might get a second chance.
I cannot imagine a school system where a student cannot wear something with a military decal. That is absurd.
This guy needed to be fired.
Any conservative who makes fun of liberal students demanding safe spaces, but then turns around and says people who question the troops should lose their jobs, is being awfully hypocritical.
Except that's not remotely what happened here. He wasn't "questioning" the troops, he was collectively insulting them. If you take what he said and replace "troops" and "military" with blacks or women, nearly any conservative would agree that a principal or teacher who says something like that should be fired. It's not hypocrisy at all.
Not even comparable to the leftist snowflakes screeching that dreadlocks are cultural appropriation and anti-trans speech is rape.
Most conservatives I know hold the troops to be sacred. Thou mayest not insult them.
sarc, I don't like this teacher, and Robby deserves all of the criticism being directed at him, but, sucking military cock informs many of the comments.
Hey Mike, why don't you go down to the local VFW and tell those folks down there what you think. Then come back and tell us how it went.
You're free to insult them all you want on your own time. You are not free to use compulsory classroom attendance to harangue your students.
Who said I insult them?
Did I seriously have to put scare quotes around "you?" I would have thought the fact that I said "you are not free to use compulsory classroom attendance" was a bit of a giveaway.
Well with all your accusations of racism I figured you meant me personally. Whoops.
Accusations of racism? I'll take a cite on that please. Or would you like to continue playing Robby Jr. here?
Followed by
If that isn't an accusation of racism, it is at least an thinly disguised accusation of "you say what he did is OK and that means it you say it would be OK if he said that about blacks which means you are racist nanny nanny boo boo!"
No it isn't. Which part of the contraction "doesn't" do you not understand? You seemed to think that it was a bad analogy because "people don't choose to be black." My implication was that you said what he said was OK but it would NOT be OK if he said it about blacks.
Are you drunk right now?
I wonder what he thinks about cops.
But as far as I can tell, Salcido wasn't bullying any specific member of his classroom.
So if he told a class full of white kids that black people are stupid and lazy, that would be fine in Robby's eyes?
False equivalence for the win!
*hint*
People don't choose to be black. People choose to be soldiers. Not even comparable.
In a free society, love of Caesar's cannon fodder is cognitive dissonance.
In a free society you're permitted to choose the speech you want to listen to and to reply in kind, but apparently coerced listening is a libertarian thing now.
Mike, you clearly have no real concept about what the military does, do you? You might also want to show some respect for them, as they are almost certainly homogeneousky better people than you.
Hmmm. Making fun of kids is equivalent to firing people. Hmmmm.
Nope.
Hmmm, Kids who disrupt free speech is equivalent to forcing a classroom to listen to speech. Hmmmm.
Nope.
Great way to spur conversation at home. "Hey Dad! You gotta hear what my teacher said today!"
If anything this debate fully highlights one of the core faults of mandatory education, at publicly funded institutions.
Christ, was an asshole.
Whoops. Sorry JC.
I mean, he was definitely a rabble rouser. But he gets a pass for being the true incarnation of God and all that.
The ultimate white privilege
Jesus did expend one of his twelve regenerations to redeem mankind.
I'm a combat veteran and I think this guy is an insufferable cunt....but he won when they fired him.
Hopefully he gets his ass jacked in public on a regular basis.
Those who serve are not policy makers; they don't start wars. This dirtbag was way out of line. If he doesn't like the military that is his prerogative, but to use his bully pulpit to disparage those who choose to volunteer is over the top. Only a lawyer would defend this POS.
I have no more use for the author of the this piece that for the POS who was rightly fired for his America hating efforts at Marxist/Leninist indoctrination in the public schools.
Horrible article. Has anyone LISTENED to the real audio?? If you've heard the audio, the real issue is that he's legit bullying a student in his class and calling the student's father and uncles essentially worthless in front of an entire classroom. Imagine how mortified and embarrassed that kid was that day at school. Anyone defending this teacher is clearly stupid. This dog
Dog poop belongs on CNN
That teacher spwould never have the guts to run his mouth like that in front of Ana cutlass service member. Like Robby, he's a fucking pussy. Just like every other progressive.
A lot of folks have already pointed out how a more honest reporting of the facts would put a lie to your conclusions.
But, I have to ask, Robbie, why take these severe intellectual shortcuts? Is it laziness, or something else? Are you really not expecting that enough of your readers will just accept your assertions blindly? I mean, even the facts you reported don't support the conclusions you want to draw from it:
1. His tirade doesn't sound remotely like a criticism of American military policy rather than a series of insults to the men in uniform.
2. This was a high school classroom, where students are not yet expected to be adults. Amy Wax, a university professor, was speaking about her research area with an interviewer away from campus. The standards of treatment are different between in-classroom and out-of-classroom. As well the standards are different children and adults.
3. This guy teaches in a public school, and this is California. If they didn't dot all their I's and cross all their T's, there is no way this firing would withstand union rules. You have to try extra hard here to get fired.
Never mind the fact that this tirade was a direct response to a kid wearing a marine corps shirt, and thus belies your comment about him bullying a kid.
I know the urge to sometimes jump without thinking, but maybe hesitate a bit, to be sure of your facts. Analogies can be dangerous things, and shoddy analogies are often the signs of third-class-intellection.
"1. His tirade doesn't sound remotely like a criticism of American military policy rather than a series of insults to the men in uniform."
If it was directed at policy, it was an amazingly mis-directed rant. I'm far from the first to note this, but he 'low lifes' whom he was vilifying had next to nothing to do with policy decisions. As mentioned above, those are decided by the same 'class' of people with whom he would like to claim as peers.
"2. This was a high school classroom, where students are not yet expected to be adults. Amy Wax, a university professor, was speaking about her research area with an interviewer away from campus. The standards of treatment are different between in-classroom and out-of-classroom. As well the standards are different children and adults."
And there was no "discussion". I had the pleasure of learning from some HS instructors who encouraged discussion, but nothing here suggests anything of the sort. This was a rant, unfortunately directed at a kid who wore a shirt the asshole didn't like. I am seriously wondering if that pig was drunk.
And the comparison to Wax is strained at best for reasons you mention and others mentioned above. Pick another example closer to equivalence, please, if you want to make that point. This ain't it.
Cont'd.
"3. This guy teaches in a public school, and this is California. If they didn't dot all their I's and cross all their T's, there is no way this firing would withstand union rules. You have to try extra hard here to get fired."
Yep. Like the Cop's union, the Teachers' union is not going to select who to defend depending on the speech content; if you are a teacher and you screw a chicken in the Plazt at high noon, the union is going to back you.
They didn't back this guy; there MUST be some toxicity which RS missed and maybe even more than the commentariat found.
Pretty sure Robby is just trolling the commentariat at this point
"Is he not allowed to criticize the military, and the endless wars our servicemen are forced to fight?"
That isn't what he did. He was being insulting and disrespectful while offering no real point or insight. Fuck that teacher, and fuck you Robby. You mealy mouthed little weasely piece of shit. You're kept safe by these people then support this fuckwad's insults without even the guts to say it in your own voice.
Why don't you and that faggoty scumbag teacher go down to the local VFW and tell those guys what you think? Not that either one of you pussies would ever dare. Neither of you are real men.
Yeah thank god they stopped the Yemenese and Somalis from invading North America.
Right, because Somalia and Yemen have been the entire focus of the entire armed forces for the last two hundred years, and they've never done anything else ever.
What a disingenuous statement.
So long as anyone is forced to attend school, neither politics or religion have any business being promoted there.
If this guy wants to teach his ideas at the local college, that's between him and their management.
That's exactly why there's still a hope for humanity.
If they were thinkers like Woodrow Wilson, we'd all be doomed.
"Any conservative who makes fun of liberal students demanding safe spaces, but then turns around and says people who question the troops should lose their jobs, is being awfully hypocritical."
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
In other words, if the SJW can have their "safe spaces", the right can have their offense at a bloviating coward like this.
"..but then turns around and says people who question the troops should lose their jobs, is being awfully hypocritical."
That's not even an honest argument, it is an attempt at mis-direction.
The issue isn't the criticism of 'troops.' The issue is that he called out a single individual student, and directed his diatribe specifically at him.
IOW, he made it personal.
And that was wrong.
"They're not like high-level thinkers, they're not academic people, they're not intellectual people. They're the lowest of our low."
Definitely a proggy. Talking point borrowed from a failed and bitter presidential candidate.
Not super surprising when you remember she married a guy who "loathed" the military.
""At the time he made his controversial remarks, he was talking with his history class at El Rancho High School about why the wars in the Middle East had dragged on."'
It's not the military's fault regarding wars that drag on and on. That's the fault of politicians. I would expect a teacher to understand that.
Article is complete white wash that Salcido was mocking a student for wearing a USMC sweatshirt. A teacher bullies a student and Reason figures its a "PC" issue. Schmucks!
You can have that discussion in a history classroom; but as a teacher you have a position of authority and shouldn't be using it to impose or indoctrinate your political or philosophical viewpoint into your students, particularly if you're teaching in a publicly funded school. Present facts, let your students draw their own conclusions and guide the debate to be civil, don't tell them what conclusions they should or shouldn't draw.
On a side note the teacher is a jackass and I wouldn't want him teaching my children.
Nope. This guy wasn't critiquing policy or the actions of public individuals, he was dividing out a specific group of Americans and simply insulting them, calling them dumbest people ever. The argument that that should be comparable to reasonable criticism is silly. This guy should be fired, or at least suspended, if he said this in a classroom about anybody: a political party, people who use facebook, people who smoke weed, commentors on Reason.com, whoever.
It's especially egregious because it's simply not true, and there's almost certainly a kid in that class that has a loved one that serves or has served. I'm a vet, if someone said this in my kid's classroom I'd show up with my diploma and cram it down his throat.
This isn't a free speech issue, it's a bad-at-your-job issue. Nobody's proposing this ass go to prison, but discipline up to and including dismissal is entirely appropriate. He can preach his stupid prejudice on the street corner with all the other morons, without collecting a paycheck from veterans.
He should have been fired for swearing. What kind of teacher talks like that?
A bigoted, progressive teacher.
Our foreign policy has been horrible, but from the sound of it this guy is even stupider than the people who instituted that bad policy!
It takes seconds to google this and see that this article is completely wrong--why hasn't it been corrected yet?
He is certainly allowed to "to criticize the military, and the endless wars our servicemen are forced to fight" but even by your own account that's not what he did. What he did in fact do was slander people who serve in the military (which is not a constitutionally protected right), bully students who choose to pursue a career in service, and expose himself for being the idiot he condemns. His hubris is so poetic.
This article might actually convince someone who wasn't familiar with the incident, and who couldn't be bothered to take the two minutes needed to watch the video of the incident and realize that the "teacher" was being abusive to a specific student, and a couple of more minutes to read the coverage of the controversy and realize that this abusive creep had a past history of unprofessional behavior in the classroom.
Well written article. Not.
