Forget Lefty Politics: Here's Why the Oscars' Ratings Hit an All-Time Low
The Academy Awards broadcast pulled fewer eyeballs for the same reason movie-ticket sales are down: We have more options. Thank God.
Don't you just hate it when the leader of the Free World is right about something? Well, Donald Trump is accurate about the sad! ratings for Sunday's broadcast of the Academy Awards:
Lowest rated Oscars in HISTORY. Problem is, we don't have Stars anymore - except your President (just kidding, of course)!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 6, 2018
Politifact, which chronicles the truthiness of Trump's proclamations, notes that Sunday's show pulled just 26.5 million viewers, which represented a nearly 20 percent decline on the 2017 show. What's more:
Was Trump right that 2018 marked a low point for the Oscars? Since the beginning of Nielsen TV audience ratings in 1974, yes….
This is not a one-year downward blip, either. Oscars viewership in 2018 fell by 39 percent from its level just four years earlier, in 2014, when Ellen DeGeneres hosted for ABC.

And get this, 2017 was also the worst year for ticket sales in Canada and the United States since 1992.
What's going on? A common complaint on the right is that Hollywood is alienating mainstream American audiences by being so doggedly and dogmatically left-wing. A standard formulation of this argument runs something like this 2015 Blaze article by William Avitt:
The summer blockbuster is not the place people go to be preached at, or lectured about how they are destroying the environment and starving the homeless for the purpose of their own greedy indulgences. And when half of the country's population is of the Conservative persuasion, moviemakers are severely alienating a large portion of the audience by doing so.
Well, maybe, maybe not. Out of last year's Oscar noms for Best Picture, the horror film Get Out made $255 million at the box office even as it was a highly charged statement about race relations. The World War II action film Dunkirk made over half-a-billion dollars worldwide and it too is a political movie, even if its actual ideology is not really clear. The current box-office smash, Black Panther, like last year's Wonder Woman, is brimming with politics, none of which can be easily interpreted as right-wing or conservative. I'll also point out that while Sunday's Oscars event featured explicit shout-outs to the #MeToo movement and calls for racial and gender equity in front of and behind the camera, the winner of the Best Actor award, Gary Oldman, is a self-described libertarian whose portrayal of conservative icon Winston Churchill was widely praised by critics across the ideological spectrum.
But if Hollywood's increasingly open hostility to audience members of "the Conservative persuasion" doesn't explain why viewership is tanking, either on Oscar night or at the theater, then what does? The answer, I think, is everywhere around us. We have so many more options on how to spend our leisure time than we did 20 or 30 years ago that the audience for older versions of entertainment are pretty much down across the board. Politifact again:
Ratings for the most recent Grammys fell by almost one-quarter in just one year, while the Screen Actors Guild Awards fell by 30 percent and the Golden Globes fell by 5 percent. This year's Super Bowl had the lowest audience since 2009….
"Every awards show on television has seen erosion, and many are notching record lows in viewership," [NPR movie critic Eric] Deggans said. "There are more things than ever competing for an audience's attention, and more alternatives for people who might not want to sit through something as conventional as an awards ceremony."

Between better and better cable TV packages, Netflix and Amazon streaming, YouTube, smart phones, and more and different types of sports, concerts, restaurants, you name it, it's really hard to maintain market share, much less grow it. "Cultural proliferation"—massive and ongoing increases our ability to make and consume creative expression under the circumstances we prefer—means that legacy institutions such as the Oscars, the Olympics, and the Super Bowl are almost certain to decline. That loss has nothing to do with political posturing—conservatives, progressives, liberals, and libertarians all have infinitely more outlets than we did a generation ago—and more to do with incredible consumer choice.
And so Donald Trump is right not just about the Oscars' ratings decline, but about his assertion that "we don't have Stars anymore." No actor or actress—or show, or movie, or annual event—can hope to command our collective attention the way one might have back in the bad old days of three networks and fewer than 300 theatrical movie releases a year. But that loss is the audience's great gain.

Why not both?
I thought it was because the movies weren't very good this year. And the ones that were critically acclaimed no one watched.
This. I don't feel like watching rich jackasses celebrate how awesome they are all the while preaching to everyone about how they need to love their lives. If I wanted morality I would go to Church, not get it from people renowned for infidelity, back stabbing, whoring, pettiness, vanity, drug usage, pretentiousness, prostitution, and overall bad personal behavior.
I guess it's just a coincidence that every show described here ..."Ratings for the most recent Grammys fell by almost one-quarter in just one year, while the Screen Actors Guild Awards fell by 30 percent and the Golden Globes fell by 5 percent. This year's Super Bowl had the lowest audience since 2009...." just happened to be marred by celebrity politicising.
I have never really liked the Oscars (due to it being a sham) but would usually have it on in the background every year. Kind of a tradition I guess. I find that I have stopped watching in exact accordance with the rise of actors using it more and more as a platform to spout their childish political views. I can't bear the thought of watching any part of it now. What was once a comfort-food has become inedible/poisonous to me.
The World War II action film Dunkirk made over half-a-billion dollars worldwide and it too is a political movie, even if its actual ideology is not really clear
WTF?
I saw Get Out on cable TV, enjoyed it greatly, and was pleased to see the "political" aspect was mostly hype.
That progressive white liberals are the real monsters is just a fact.
I don't really get how "Get Out" is a bold statement on racism in society.
Agreed. Gillespie is living out the very alienation he's decrying by calling it a "highly charged statement about race relations" in his own voice.
I'm still amazed by his Dunkirk assertion. Must be his English grad degree indoctrination.
I'm still amazed by his Dunkirk assertion.
It has had a surprisingly long-lasting effect.
The film wasn't, but some clever marketing people pushed it as a biting statement against... the alt-right? limousine liberals? neurosurgeons? therapists? Who knows.
Get Out was a biting critique of all the white people praising Get Out.
I almost didn't watch Get Out because of what the media was saying about it.
I didn't find it politically charged. It was a horror movie made by a black man, and from a black (empathetic) perspective, I get the horror aspect of it. Meeting your girlfriend's white family, worried that they are racist, but then they end up being liberals who control your mind and use your body for their own ends. It was shot at liberals, they were just too stupid to realize it.
It was gotten.
That Jordan Peele satirized the well-meaning racism of liberals doesn't mean he's OK with the overt racism of conservatives.
It was gotten.
Maybe you got it, but only because years of hanging around us gave you the modicum of self-awareness to see it.
You still believe that the leftards' racism is well-meaning? You tragic little fool.

It's a weird thing for Nick to say, but this little vignette ...
Waiting in the doctor's lounge they had "The Chew" on TV. Talking about Oscars, one of the hosts commented that his favorite film of the year was Dunkirk. Golf claps. Then one of the other hosts mentioned "Water", he said he was going to see that this weekend, and the audience went wild. So what does that mean?
Says nothing about politics in Dunkirk, which is an action movie with sparse dialog. It does however reflect something very odd about the current state of politics in this country, in which a movie that depicts the raw courage of 300,000 British troops holding out until they can get off the beach receives a confused response from a Hollywood audience while "fish meets girl" makes them go nuts.
I'm thrilled but frankly astonished that Hollywood bent so far as to give Oldman the Oscar. He more than deserved it, but since when has merit mattered to the Academy?
That could just be audience composition. Dunkirk is a very male oriented movie while "Water" is much more female friendly. Guess where the audience of "The Chew" skews as well.
Last year's Oscars was 3 hours of group therapy for a bunch of Hillary supporters, still in shock that their candidate didn't win the election. They bashed Trump repeatedly for his pussy grabbing comments, while ignoring the Weinstein in their midst. Top it all off with Jimmy Man-Show Kimmel's latching on to the metoo crowd. Fuck these hypocrites.
There was a time not long ago when the Oscars were apolitical until some blowhard like Meryl Streep would get up to announce an award, get all political, and people would roll their eyes.
Remember when people who agreed with Sacheen Littlefeather's message disagreed with her using an awards show to promote it? Ah, memories...
I also loved that, in the midst of the MeToo bullshit, Kobe got a standing ovation. Because God knows his history with women isn't "problematic".
And I still don't really get why I should feel anything about women who fucked dudes to move ahead. That happens a lot --- well, a lot in the "entertainment" field. For all of the faults, blatant racism and sexism and sheer evil of the private sector, I can think of no sector that touches the crap that is Hollywood.
And I still don't really get why I should feel anything about women who fucked dudes to move ahead.
Eliza Dushku had it coming.
Are these women going to name names?
No?
Then fuck all of them.
If you won't name who you fucked to move ahead, stop wasting time. You don't care. You don't care if another woman is "forced" to fuck a producer for a role.
Government?
Because I'm pretty sure LBJ required presidential kneepads for his secretaries, and he's not the only one.
Whenever I think of the hypocrites about #metoo, #grabherbythepussy, I just remember this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr_YJamOFHE, smile and know that they?re full of shit. The Democrats and the media sat on this for 8 years, with absolutely no outrage.
People are seeing less movies because the movies are "doggedly and dogmatically left-wing." It's not just the award shows.
People are seeing *fewer* movies, Sergeant Shitty Grammar.
If they walk out in disgust before the movie is over, it's less. (Damage control mode activated!)
Maybe "less of" movies they go to, but still "fewer" movies.
So there.
Stannis approves.
YMMV, but I'm seeing a lot fewer movies, in theaters anyway, because the movie-going experience sucks. And the quality and political slant of the onscreen glurge is only part of it, albeit a big part. (Last Jedi, I'm looking at you, asshole.)
You pay $11-13 for a matinee, more if it's something 3D or IMAX. You get in there and assorted slack-jawed wastes of meat are talking in their normal speaking voices throughout, like they have no idea that they're no longer in their living rooms. These people may or may not be the same brain-dead breeders who bring their whiny toddlers into late-night or R-rated movies. The food is shitty, and even if the popcorn is fresh they're likely not serving it with real butter. Oh, and a small popcorn and small soda costs ten bucks.
They can come up with all these nifty apps to get you showtimes and reviews, to pay in advance and use a QR code for a ticket, yada yada. But no matter what, they can't or won't do anything about kicking out talkers, texters, and breeders who think the rest of the audience is supposed to babysit their spawn. So you end up paying $11 minimum to wish that the onscreen lasers were real and that they'd hit the stupid cunt next to you who won't shut up.
So for the most part, I wait until I can stream movies or get them from the library. ?\_(?)_/?
Just because you have more options doesn't automatically mean that you choose an alternative if you like the entertainment already offered. Clearly viewers don't like the entertainment being offered.
More importantly, there wasn't some explosion in options in the past 12 months. This was a out this years show
Gary Oldman, is a self-described libertarian whose portrayal of conservative icon Winston Churchill was widely praised by critics across the ideological spectrum.
Gary Oldman performances ranked:
State of Grace
True Romance
The Professional
Air Force One
No Kung Fu Panda?
No.
But, seriously, no Dracula?
No.
OK, I demand an explanation. I understand not having Dracula at the top, but you've got to admit that his ability was more well displayed and executed than Air Force One or The Professional. Not that he's bad in either of the latter roles but that they're a bit redundant with each other and other roles.
I can understand a strike against the movie because of Reeves and Ryder, but that's hardly Oldman's fault.
I demand an explanation.
lol no
You, sir, are an idiot of the highest order. All four on the list should be The Fifth Element. And then The Dark Knight coming up, ironically, fifth.
With a response like that you must think it's white boy day. It's not white boy day.
Crusty, does Fist look like a beautiful blonde with big tits and an ass that tastes like French vanilla ice cream?
*unzips just in case the answer is yes*
Well crap. Promise me you'll come back and read this thread when it's white boy day then.
It's about time Fist posted something uncontroversial.
Tinker Tailor
Hannibal
Tinker Tailor was horrible, but hardly Oldman's fault. Cold war material warmed over by the director holding it in his armpit, and a futile effort to cram at least 6 hours of film story-telling into 2. Again, hardly Oldman's fault.
EEEEVVEERRYONNEEEEEEE
Air Force One, you're serious? At least get Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead in there well before you scrape Air Force One off the bottom of the barrel.
^YES MUCH SO
Gotta put in a plug for Book of Eli
Good movies died with John Ford.
Nothing about how the movies that are nominated are watched by very few people and nobody has any rooting interest in any of the wankery otherwise? Does anybody seriously think the best movie of last year was the mute chick fucking a fish movie?
You're not very good at the pop culture beat, Nick.
"Does anybody seriously think the best movie of last year was the mute chick fucking a fish movie?"
Well, I didn't see about half of the other contenders for best picture, but for me it was, yes. Did you actually see it, or are you basing your judgment on some comments you've read?
For one thing, any movie that begins with the star, totally nude, taking a bath and diddling herself as part of her morning routine is a winner in my book. (It also helps that I've had a thing for Sally Hawkins' girl-next-door sexiness ever since I first noticed her in Blue Jasmine.) And then there's the specifically anti-government thread that runs through the movie, which should appeal to libertarians. You have a juxtaposition of officials on both sides of the Cold War behaving like assholes, basically, while ordinary folks do an end run around them. [Spoiler Alert;] Even the super-statist guy played by Michael Shannon basically gets screwed over by the government as compensation for his years of loyalty performing evil deeds.
It wasn't a bad movie. No. Was it worthy of best picture? Heck no. The only film that was worthy of the nomination was Dunkirk.
Wife dragged me to it. As subtle as a knee to the groin. It was a pretty movie with a plot that couldn't challenge a paint-eating toddler, dialogue so terrible than porn movies do it better, and a message that can, generously, be described as meh.
She was unattractive so that's a knock --- and, again, we're being lectured BY THESE SAME FUCKING PEOPLE about "objectifying" women. Was the masturbation thing needed? You couldn't demonstrate her loneliness by OTHER manners besides her speed-boxing her clit? The whole thing shows what a BS sham the entire Hollywood ethos is nowadays.
You think that's hypocrisy? Take a gander at Red Sparrow
I agree. I saw it last night at the discount theater, and it was worth the $4.The line for the movie was so long that I missed the beginning, but I found the actress growing on me throughout the movie. I'm glad I'm not the only one. She's a little older than me. The MC being mute eliminated a lot of boring expository dialogue; it was only awkward a few times, and I think that was at least partially satire: "Repeat [what you're signing?] Okay I got it."
They humanized the sadistic shithead by fleshing him out a little. The brown-nosing subordinate was a nice touch; I can kind of imagine how the boss-man maintains the delusions that make him an entitled prick.
It does check a lot of PC boxes, but it has to be if the staff wants to avoid having bricks thrown through their windows. I don't know that a black custodial worker in a parallel version of the 50s would actually be so stereotypically submissive to a white boss, but it's another campy trope. It's a movie about a sentient fish man; I'm not expecting an accurate period drama.
I found Get Out more boring than scary. Plus it's "message" seemed to me to be that dumb boyfriends put themselves in danger.
I'm not a smoker, but if I was, and the girl I had recently started dating actually grabbed a cigarette out of my mouth and chucked it out the window because anyone she dates is "not allowed" to smoke...that would immediately end the relationship for me. Period. You put up with that kind of crap at the very beginning of a relationship, and while you may not be literally kidnapped and turned into a zombie, you are going to have your balls kept in her purse for the duration.
As for The Shape of Water, I actually liked the expressly pro-individual, anti-government (be it US or Soviet) message in that movie. I once met the writer/director in person, and he is a pretty non-political guy. At least in the sense that he will tell you straight up that relationships with your friends, family, and co-workers are a hell of a lot more important than worrying about this party or that party and what they are doing. Especially at a time where the mainstream choices for rulers are both pretty damn abhorrent, his sentiment of trying to mostly ignore the petty tyrants has merit.
The Shape of Water is a great movie if you just accept that it's a magical fantasy and go with it. If there's a flaw, it's that it's just a bit too romantic. A bit over the top.
"tell you straight up that relationships with your friends, family, and co-workers are a hell of a lot more important than worrying about this party or that party and what they are doing."
It was very unusual to see so much about the personal life of the antagonist. The desire to keep our families fed and our lifestyles secure can persuade us to do some pretty inhuman things. Like the hyperinflation in post-WWI Germany that enabled the rise of the Nazis.
It even gave John Maynard Keynes pause, although not as much as Hayek who observed it more intimately from Austria.
By all means we should feel vindicated by his fate, and instead I'm just thinking about how it's pretty shitty all around.
When I watch a movie I don't wanted to be brainwashed or preached to which is what most movies are doing to day. I want to be entertained. With greater means to get the entertainment a person wants now days these actors who see themselves almost as gods are losing the hold they have over the people and especially when it comes to politics.
"When I watch a movie I don't wanted to be brainwashed or preached to which is what most movies are doing to day."
I don't necessarily mind when a director/screenwriter has an underlying theme that involves politics, but I still expect some nuanced characters and don't like to be beaten over the head with the message.
That's my main problem with "political message" movies these days: they assume the audience is so stupid they won't understand the point unless it is completely black-and-white and repeated every 5 minutes throughout the movie. Case in point from a couple of years ago: The sci-fi movie Elysium was rendered unwatchable to me in the way it hammered home the point that, "rich people are ALL evil, and the poor are ALWAYS noble and good." Seriously?!?
Agreed, Occupy Space was terrible not just because of Matt Damon.
That's my main problem with "political message" movies these days: they assume the audience is so stupid they won't understand the point unless it is completely black-and-white and repeated every 5 minutes throughout the movie.
So much this. Hollywood is under the (perhaps correct) assumption that most people are essentially retarded and can't understand themes. For those who can, these types of movies are torture to watch. It's even worse since plots are so predictable these days I can watch the trailer and write down what's going to happen and I'll be around 80% correct after seeing it.
I think that these days if your movie doesn't have a reference to climate change in it, you're fined a million dollars by the government. It's the only way I can explain how virtually every film has a mention of climate change, even in films that have nothing to do with climate.
Planet Earth II did this for me. I get it. Humans have wrecked the hell out of the planet. I learned about global warming before I learned arithmetic.
Also many of the scenes actually look animated. It has so much post-processing.
Still an amazing production. Thank you, British taxpayers.
The carbon footprint to make and show such a film may exceed that of several aboriginal nations.
Hate to sound completely middlebrow, but that's why I watched the Bourne movies (based on a comma in one of the Ludlum books by the same name). They did what they said they would do -- featured a hero running around the world beating the crap out of everyone who looked at him sideways. Granted that's thin gruel for a trilogy, but at least they held up their end of the bargain.
Indeed. More choices for entertainment allows us to avoid people preaching their uninformed political opinions and/or political propaganda at us.
Nick lists the Grammys, Oscars, and Golden Globes along with the Super Bowl for his "wide swath" of examples. The consistency in all four of those is that politics is involved in all of them. Funny the ratings haven't tanked for the CMA (country music awards) over the last five years (in fact, last year was there highest rating during that time).
Maybe part of the drop has to do with more choices, but most of it has to do with people of all political stripes who get tired of entertainers telling them what to think.
Yes! It's not one thing or the other, it's a combination. But I am sick of listening to entertainers who know nothing about the lives of the vast majority of the country rub their politics in our faces. I'm not even American, and I don't like Trump either, but enough already! Get the F%ck over it!
NBA ratings are apparently up.
All the political sex harassment virtue signalling makes me puke!
Applauding Kobe and Polanski also makes me puke!
Polanski could force-fuck jailbait in the ass every goddamn day and I'd still applaud him for Repulsion alone
"Politifact, which chronicles the truthiness of Trump's proclamations...."
Politifact doesn't "chronicle" anything.
It's a leftist outfit trying to pass itself off as an impartial arbiter of truth.
No, the president is just a big fucking liar.
Unlike you and Hillary right? Obama has never told a lie either.
No more so than the prior one.
I would say less so if for no other reason than Trump lies about shit that only the media cares about. Obama lied about things like the Bengazi attack and people's health insurance and dozens of other things that really matter.
Sometimes this is like going to the zoo on an alien planet.
Not our fault you are from Venus Tony. Obama said that if you liked your health insurance you could keep it. And the people who wrote that line bragged about what a huge lie it was and laughed about how America bought it on Charlie Rose. And Obama blamed the Bengazi attack on a Youtube video and threw some poor bastard in prison over it knowing all the while it was an act of terrorism.
You don't get to own the facts you little fucking weirdo. So stop lying and pretending it convinces anyone. You pathetic little fuck.
"Facts" are not the two things you learned from Breitbart.com last year.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9Cla0waf80
Is that Britbart you nasty little fuck? Is it?
Why do you get yourself into these unwinnable little tiffs John?
I just won. There is Obama's speech writers laughing about how they and Obama lied to the country. Now tell me again is that Britbart you little fuck?
Now run away and troll and lie on some other thread. At some point even I have to stop feeling sorry for you.
Don't. You poor thing apparently can't even read. I gave you an expertly curated list of Trump's lies. You certainly didn't have time enough to determine that absolutely none of them "matter" according to whatever standards you pulled from your ass.
Again, is that Britbart? Obama lied about taking people's health insurance. And your response "Trump claimed he won more electoral votes than he did". You are pathetic.
My response was to link you to hundreds of lies Trump told in public in a year.
The reason you can only come up with one or two is because Obama didn't lie that much, and that wasn't even a lie so much as an overpromise. His speechwriters were joking about it because it gained so much fucking traction in the idiotverse you inhabit where you do nothing but consume rightwing propaganda.
This humongous double standard you morons have is why we can't have nice things.
None of Trump's "overpromises" cost me $5,600 out of my paycheck annually nor have they required me to pay for medical treatment out of my bank account when it was previously covered minus the deductible.
The good news is, you don't have to be here. In fact, we'd all appreciate it if you'd just leave. And no need even to say goodbye
Very much more so than the prior one. Trump may be the biggest liar in the history of anyone to hold the position of head of state or any government job or any job or nonjob.
And yet you are unable to name a single lie. At some point don't you get tired of being hateful and stupid? Don't you ever want to get smarter?
This just goes to December of last year, but you can get the picture:
Trump's lies
And again, you can't name a single fucking lie.
Do you want me to retype some of the hundreds I just linked you to?
Hundreds but you still can't name them. Tell us more about how Youtube is really Britbart and Obama never lied you nasty little bastard.
"I guess it was the biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan."
I like the ones you can immediately disprove with numbers.
And that matters so much. Totally like lying about your healthcare bill ruining people's insurance or blaming an innocent man for your fuck up in Bengazi or claiming that attacking Libya wasn't a war requiring Congressional approval. Totally the same. Obama lied repeatedly about things that really mattered. You own that legacy you lying little fuck.
And he is President Tony. And he will be President for another seven years. Why don't you just do the world a favor and kill yourself now. Save yourself the misery and disappointment that is coming.
You can avoid these little emotional episodes by not making absurd, easily disprovable claims in the first place, John.
No, but it would be nice if you could stay on topic. But of course, you're Tony
"This just goes to December of last year, but you can get the picture:"
Here's #2:
"Jan. 21 "A reporter for Time magazine ? and I have been on their cover 14 or 15 times. I think we have the all-time record in the history of Time magazine." (Trump was on the cover 11 times and Nixon appeared 55 times.)"
Yep, he "lied" guessing he'd been on the cover 3 or 4 times more than he had.
Tony, if that qualifies as a lie, Obo never opened his mouth without "lying".
Was the lie that he was on the cover 3 or 4 less times, or that he was 300% off from having the all-time record?
Like everything else you've ever claimed, you aren't the least bit capable of proving it.
Tony, you are aware that they have labelled undeniably true statements as lies, right?
Well, Benghazi and related attacks were actually motivated by that video.
Holy shit --- you believe that? I cannot believe anybody believed that.
Yeah it was this whole thing. The right had an astroturfed freakout over the video thing, eleventy billion failed congressional investigations trying to hang Hillary for something, and then it turned out that it was the video all along. You had moved on by that point, but you're free to google it. I assume at least our google's are the same.
Oh dear. Bless your heart. You actually believe the video caused it.
I mean, at least Obama's drones KNEW they were lying. You bought the shit?
Citation missing.
It was fun watching Politifact twist itself into a bowline knot during the run-up to the 2016 election trying to make everything Clinton said true. And by "fun," I mean it was a great way to completely strip the lining of your stomach.
The World War II action film Dunkirk made over half-a-billion dollars worldwide and it too is a political movie, even if its actual ideology is not really clear.
The politics of it are exceptionally clear. Society needed to find ways to get One Direction to stop making music.
LOL. You won the thread
Yeah, it really sucked how there were no entertainment alternatives to the Oscars back in that long-ago year of 2014.
Yet ratings for basketball and baseball (Cough hockey) are holdings steady.
Nicky, if I want to go to a movie - that is overpriced - I don't want to be lectured. Same as with sports, I want to get away.
"Between better and better cable TV packages, Netflix and Amazon streaming, YouTube, smart phones, and more and different types of sports, concerts, restaurants, you name it, it's really hard to maintain market share, much less grow it. "
Umm, cable is declining. While Netflix and Amazon do their own programming (Spoon!), they still show a lot of those movies. Do those people watch them?
Better question, the items listed have been around for years. Why the sharp decline all of a sudden?
Occam's razor...occam's razor...now at dollar shave club
This. People keep talking about NFL ratings tanking because people have more options... maybe it's just the NFL blows so people won't watch it? How many stops in play do we need? So slow!
Plus the politics doesn't help.
NFL ratings were sliding some due to saturation (Thrs and Sat games), more alternate entertainment options, fans metriculating to just fantasy, NFL Redzone, possible streaming of games. But dropping the political football on the kneeling was the biggie.
Agree with these being the main reasons for declining nfl numbers. I'll add in that officiating has become very suspect in the league. Far too many games were decided by a very questionable call. The standard for what is a catch, touchdown, PI, and holding is so subjective that fans can easily feel like the league is rigged in favor of certain teams.
Just wait til the explosion in the audience for curling. You ain't seen nothin' yet
Gotta love a sport where beer is an official piece of equipment.
All the show biz award shows are just an exercise in self congratulation by a bunch of people who think the profession they're in is super special in some way.
There are no nationally televised award shows for the best HVAC technicians of the year in the residential, commercial and industrial categories.
The Hollywood attention whores aren't doing anything that's any more important than people who work in any other industry.
Do you sit on porches often? Chew on things?
Tony you are the dumbest and most willfully ignorant person on here. Everyone, even the other leftists are amazed at how stupid you are. You really ought not to comment on anyone's intelligence.
Does your single brain cell get lonely for some company?
I like Tony's comments. They are proof that watching corporate teevee is about as good for your intellect as sniffing glue or paint thinner. Most of his critics are equally mesmerized, just not by the same channel. Someday he might happen upon the OFF button, and step, blinking, out into the light of day.
I suspect that if the name weren't already taken, the award show for internet trolls would be called the Tony's.
Dunkirk was a horror movie set in a war. Moreover, if the "political message is not clear", then it is not a political movie. And there was nothing political about Wonder Woman unless you think the existence of a female superhero is somehow a political statement, something that no one outside of the lunatic fringe believes.
It is impossible to quantify all of the reasons why the rating went down as much as they did. I do think the fact that they choose Jimmy Kimmel as the host contributed to it. Having Kimmel host told the audience to be prepared for a smug-fest. Also, I think the years of the ceremony being a tiresome political smug fest going back to George Clooney lecturing America on how much more enlightened Hollywood is have over time caused people to tune out. Choosing Kimmel to host again just accelerated the trend that was already happening.
At least Billy Crystal was funny at one point. I'm not sure that can be said about Kimmel.
Remember that time Jimmy Kimmel was really funny? Neither do I.
I blame the over-reliance on professional stylists. At least Frances McDormand showed up in the Von Trapp family drapes and did cartwheels on stage of whatever.
I'll come out and say it, most TV these days is explicitly political and implicitly political propaganda. Seeing Michelle Obama show up as an honored swoon guest (the current First Lady of the United States at the time, no less!) on Parks & Recreation vs. every snarky statement that's implied or explicity about about Trump in every TV show proves as much.
So really, it's hardly a surprise that no one watches the Oscars. I mean, if anything it should be shocking that anyone ever gave a fuck about it in the first place. It's surely not purely because of the clear and ever-present cloud of smug indoctrination present on most 'low brow' TV across every genre, BUT it's a factor for sure
Ultimately it's a combination of factors, ranging from just generally low interest over something that matters very little to anyone outside the Hollywood bubble all the way up to political and personal hypocrisy of the people being 'honored'. The biggest cause, in my opinion? It's because movies are by-and-large aimed at foreign markets these days with a side helping of American viewership.
Have you actually noticed what films foreign markets love? It's not the shit being talked about during the Oscars, most of the time. Sure enough, the base metric for getting an Oscar nod is dropping like a stone. You want 'arty, but mainstream' you go to Sundance or something, you want smug bullshit watch the Oscars. No surprise, most don't care for the smug bullshit.
It is part of the overall trend of Hollywood no longer making movies that anyone cares about or mattering to anyone other than themselves.
I'm not buying that explanation. Like any sort of "those were the days" reminiscing, I don't see much about today's Hollywood content that's truly radically different from just about any time in history.
There were more good movies made in a year in the 70s than there is in a decade now. There is no denying that the quality of filmmaking has radically declined over the last 20 years.
Yeah, I don't buy it either. More movies are made today than probably ever, and that decentralization is another factor in why the Oscars don't really matter to anyone except the circle-jerk crowd in Hollywood. Again, I'm not saying this is the only factor but there are a lot of factors.
On a related note. I watched SNL up until this year. But it turned into the TDS show. Some of the political jokes were funny, but they just kept beating a dead horse. And a lot of it wasn't that funny. It's just lazy writing.
And after spending 8 years pretending Boobious Maximus was just so cool that he was impossible to make fun of, them now deciding to spend every minute of every episode lampooning Trump rings a bit hallow.
I think they made a sketch kinda critical of BHO late in his second term.
But they've had more political jokes in the last 18 months then in the previous 16 years.
Secretly, all of Hollywood is amazingly happy that Trump got elected. It means none of the writers need to try anymore, they can just vomit on a picture of Trump and the seals will clap and honk.
Which isn't to say they were really trying before, either. Humor is dying under prolonged assault for Progressives, frankly. You can't have humor in an overly sensitive 'PC' culture.
The problem humorists had with Obama is that he was only very mildly mockable. The problem with Trump is that he's a walking farce already.
Unathletic, non-curious mom-jeans wearing dipshit who thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Yup, nothing one can mock there. Hell, he even married a Wookie, so they can play off his empathy.
Unathletic?
I'm terribly sorry for you that your president is such a total fucking fat ignorant demented lunatic corrupt pear-shaped textbook psych case with an abandoned bird's nest on his head compared to the sane, stable, and capable Obama, but this racist lashing out is only going to make people think you deserve to join him in the nuthouse.
Yes. His attempts to throw a baseball would be insulting to young girls. I can play basketball better than he and I am decidedly abysmal at it.
Well, if you call spying on Americans, wire-tapping reporters, tapping their parents emails, arming Mexican drug cartels, sucking up to Putin, fucking up Libya, etc....sure.
Sucking up to Putin? You really put that in there? If Trump doesn't literally suck Putin's penis before this is all over it won't be a surprise to anyone.
Not sure why you guys gotta talk about sucking dicks, but it's a simple fact that Obama's entire policy towards Russia was 'you guys do whatever you want, whenever you want' for the vast majority of his time in office.
One President offered "flexibility" after his election. Tried to stop fracking, which helped Russian oil interests. Pulled missile defense from E European countries per Russia's request. Begged Putin to pull his nuts out of the fire in re to Syria. Mocked Romney for calling Russia our top geopolitical rival. Refused to arm Ukraine after Russian invasion.
Who was that?
Wrong. The problem was mocking Obama would have instantly labeled anyone who did so as a racist for belittling the first black President.
Writers themselves noted this during the Obama years, even while they were always careful to include it with other less compelling reasons. They also admitted it's hard to mock someone you happen to agree with, but now they've thrown open the gates of their inner repression and it's...basically slashfic. Not a good look, not that I expect any comedian to be impartial or anything of the sort.
Mocking someone who is easy to mock takes no comedic talent. And when you do it week after week it becomes tedious and unfunny. It's lazy writing.
Good comedic writers can find something to mock about anyone. SNL has had some good writers over the years. They could have mocked Obama, they just chose not to.
Teleprompter. Social passing. Revisionist history of his CV. Lying about the ACA. A wife that some think is trans. Creeping some Danish (?) politician. His creeper VP. SNL instead went with a large breasted co-ed nicknamed Obamagirl.
You know who I still like? Bill Maher. Anyone else?
Guy is a jackass, super liberal, but sticks to his own thoughts and not afraid to say shit that will piss off people. Always like him.
BYODB, Glad you brought up the fact that most big tent flicks are in fact made for foreign audiences.
Did any of the commentariat here actually watch the Oscars? If so, why? Holy fuck, what a torturous display of virtue signaling and self-congratulations it must be.
It kind of was, but it walked the tightrope just well enough not to make me want to kill myself.
Understand that it's not Fat Sean Hannity whining on behalf of Nascar morons that motivates them to behave this way. It's the enormous fucking blowback they got from Seth MacFarlane's boob joke.
Is Sean Hannity fat now? Boy, everyone's letting themselves go.
Sean Hannity was not fat at some point?
Are you thinking of Rush Limbaugh?
Both Fat Rush Limbaugh and Fat Sean Hannity are fat to my eyes, and I live in the South/Midwest.
No, the pussy grabbing disgraced former senator from Minnesota, Al Franken, is fat and flabby and both Rush and Sean could kick his effeminate ass.
Did Franken have a kissing booth at the Minneapolis Super Bowl?
Your obsession with the Irish is flattering, Tony.
You know, I found out through DNA testing that I'm not even a little Irish, when family lore had us like at least 75% Irish. This devastated my dad and sister for some reason, but I'm cool with it.
It's funny how it randomly changes things about your life though. Like the other day someone mentioned a certain actor with an Irish surname in conversation, and I was like, people sometimes say he's my celebrity doppelganger, and it made sense because we're both Irish, and now I have to revisit that entire chain of logic.
My grandfather, Paddy O'Shea was convinced he was Irish. I never bought it.
I don't know, I think any of the people that conquered Ireland (which is basically everyone) can be considered 'Irish' at this point. If you're only counting the Picts or the like than you're already being arbitrary.
I don't know, and of course DNA across Britain and Ireland is intermixed a lot, but lots of people who took the same test show some percentage Irish, or a high percentage Irish, even if they weren't aware of any Irish heritage. Mine seems to go out of its way to not list any Irish.
Like how Elizabeth Warren isn't Cherokee?
"I found out through DNA testing"
Okay, this clinches it for me. Tony is not a real person, he's an exquisitely programmed progressive bot, here to highlight all the stereotypes that are so fun to mock.
Well played Google. I am thoroughly impressed.
I don't think the movies have anything to do with the interpretation of the Broadcast Television Show, The Oscars.
I don't watch the Oscars for two reasons. 1. I have better things to do. 2. Like many things that are interesting to me, if I catch them as I flip by I'll stop and watch. I would never stop and watch the Oscars, even for ten seconds... because I don't need to pilloried about income inequality, sexism and global warming by a bunch of hyper-wealthy progressive gropers who get to the event in large, black SUVs and private jets.
So speaking for myself, the politics does come into play-- and really has nothing to do with the movies themselves.
More choices may be an issue, but jeez, the lefty shit can spoil a zombie movie.
No, seriously, anybody else ever see World War Z?
Brad Pitt stars as a pussy, who used to work for the UN, but quit his high powered, high pay job to be a stay at home dad--so his wife could have a chance at a career, too.
Barf.
More recent examples: The last Road Warrior movie. The best parts about it weren't the part about how the feminist perspective triumphs over the male urge to dominate.
The suicidal murder squad terrorists are just terribly misguided, you see?
Puke.
SPOILER ALERT!!!
More recent example: They bring back Blade Runner and the worst part of it isn't that Harrison Ford turned out not to be a synthetic. The whole thing is about how men are so susceptible to imagining that they're the Kwizatz Haderach, when they're really just bit players in the female struggle to populate the universe.
Wretch.
Why would any heterosexual male pay to see the Death Wish reboot after that?
Why would any heterosexual male pay to see the Death Wish reboot after that?
They show tits?
Okay, maybe!
What are the chances of that these days?
Far higher than any other point in movie making history?
You can't swing a stick in media these days without hitting a naked set of breasts. HBO has basically made a brand around tits in 'serious' drama.
(And no, I don't consider HBO to be 'serious' in any way shape or form.)
Watch 'Altered Carbon'. I never thought the day would come when I wouldn't want to see another set of tits, but... Nah, I can't say that with a straight face, but still, Altered Carbon has more breasts than you can slash a sword at.
And, AC is a decent show too. I'm not sure it can have a worthwhile Season 2 though.
There was no such political message in Fury Road. The feminism people talk about came from the existence of a woman hero who kicked ass yet remained a woman (meaning physically weaker than most of the men, not to mention missing an arm) as well as other notable kickass women characters. The political message, such as it is, is dictators with cults of personality are bad mkay.
You could definitely make an argument that Fury Road had it's feminist slant. Specifically, that slant was that women are mostly there to be used by powerful men and that occasionally one of them will bite the hand that feeds. I mean, seriously none of the women in the film made any better decisions than the men. Everyone was equally retarded. That said, at least the society of psycho berserkers was functioning whereas the female commune was dead or dying. Huh...go figure.
It was an overall bad ass movie who's only confusing plot point was why exactly Mad Max was in it. He was almost completely pointless to everything that happened. So even the supposed 'strong female lead' the movie failed. The female lead wasn't the titular character of the film despite being, arguably, the lead. Whoops.
He was rather superfluous, but if Max himself had been turned to a woman there'd be pants shitting galore in certain circles wouldn't there?
For one, Mad Max literally can not 'become a woman' since that would be impossible. Unless there's some mutant radiation that gives men vagina's, which I assume is about the right speed for that franchise at this point so hey why not write up the script. (It's come way, way far from it's simplistic roots and veering close to Troma territory without the fun.)
What I don't understand is why people think that just switching the genders of this or that character is at all meaningful or creative. It's using the same exact bullshit hackneyed plots, lazy writing, and idiot tropes and passing it off as 'better' because, hey, we used a woman!
Sorry, but if that's all it takes to get someone on board with your lazy ass writing than being 'woke' is code for 'retarded'.
It was all about feminism.
Even when they forgave the terrorist as just being misguided.
Max's first inclinations were to treat everyone as enemies.
When the women banded together, everything changed. The whole society changed.
There wasn't any aspect of that movie that wasn't ultimately about the patriarchy.
Even at the very end, the central message was "Real men fall back".
Okay then it was a great movie about feminism. We've got plenty of Tom Cruise if we want movies about how awesome dudes are, even if he does wear satin thongs.
I thought Fury Road was a pretty sweet movie too. Pretty realistic too imho, if shit hits the fan you can bet men are going to try/do that to women. Women banding together to try and escape would not surprise me.
I'll have to rewatch it, I remember very little of the 'plot' since it was only there as a way to move people along to the next ridiculous set piece. I went into it hearing what you're saying from other people, and I specifically recall not seeing it in the same light. It's worth a rewatch either way though.
"The political message, such as it is, is dictators with cults of personality are bad mkay."
Really? It is amazing such a movie got made during Obama's rule.
Ok come on. As soon as you saw Ryan Gosling in the previews you knew it was going to be emasculated.
In the era of social media you don't have to be an actor to be a star. The Kardashain Clan are as popular/well known as any movie star...
There are models who are big insta-gram stars....that's someone whose talent is being born attractive/photogenic.
I read an article about U-tube stars... There are these 2 teenage girls who have a gazillion followers and their videos are basically just two girls talking and laughing...
So who cares about "movie stars" anymore? When anybody can be a "star"....no one is a "star"...
People still watch live events (mostly sports) despite streaming options. If people liked the Academy Awards, they would watch it, on non traditional platforms.
Politically charged movies usually flop in the box office, including last year's Detroit, which I assume addressed race issues more than Black Panther. Downsizing and Suburbica also flopped. Given that the NFL also saw a 10% decline in viewership, it's fair to assume that politics is among the primary factors behind low ratings on just about anything.
And celebs being overly political isn't just about saying mean things about Trump. It's the way they march lockstep with liberal orthodoxy and interject their opinions on everything, when none was asked for. They're always a presence in all sort of banner causes, but their private lives are in stark contrast to their advocacy.
The last time I saw Kimmel was when Gary Johnson was a guest. Even though Kimmel was courteous for the most part, at the end he took out a marijuana on a piece of paper and asked GJ to roll it - even though GJ told everyone that he wouldn't touch the stuff while he was campaigning.
They're all skeevy loudmouth jerks. Totally unpleasant. Why should anyone in the center right watch gala for the liberal elites that feature the likes of Matt Damon, J-Law, and Streep? These are people who applauded Polanski.
This is why the TV ratings failed so hard circa 2005 for genre shows like Firefly when it was obvious from online activity that far more people were watching it and other SF&F shows than Nielsen claimed. NMR was only getting surveys from around 15,000 households a week in a country of 300 million very diverse people with very diverse opinions on what they like to watch.
The official forum for Firefly got more posts in a couple of months than the X-Files forum had accumulated in *eight years*. Firefly was the #1 recorded and saved show on TiVo. When the DVD set was released after the Firefly was canceled, it was the #1 selling DVD set on Amazon.
But NMR stood by their clearly wrong numbers, and FOX, despite they and other networks complaints about NMR's obsolete methods, would not ignore those wrong numbers and renew Firefly or other great shows they'd used NMR's garbage data to justify canceling.
Living outside the range of communist CBS, altruist ABC and nationalsocialist NBC was like being away from cigarettes long enough for the habit to lose its grip. Back in the USSA I found the OFF button on the teevee set soon after the Nixon looter electioneering subsidies made it even worse, and have been a happy camper ever since.
I've got an idea for the Oscars: what if they got a host who was funny?
-jcr
"I've got an idea for the Oscars: what if they got a host who was funny?"
Then who would give the obligatory "Trump is a big poopyhead!" speech?
After Brokeback Mountain, someone (can't remember who) wrote an interesting piece suggesting that the entertainment industry in the U.S. no longer needs Red State America to make films. There is enough of a market on the East and West coasts, and Europe. It doesn't matter if their product doesn't "play in Peoria."
Hollywood blackballs hetero white men on accusations without a trial. Meanwhile a black woman gives an interview on the IMDB Oscars Party describing repeatedly touching a man's buttocks on set. And a nominated film celebrates the 'budding summer romance' between an adult male and a minor boy. Because if you're straight, male, and white it ain't right, but if you're female, black, and/or gay, it's all ok!
Nick really shouldn't take politics off the table as a reason. The past two Oscars haven't been far from left-wing political rallies. I don't think the heavy handed politics in the show can be ignored. Nielsen ratings show that large numbers of people tune out when the presenters, host, and winners get too political.
Also left out of his analysis is how the nominees and winners tend to be for movies the public wasn't interested in. I'd argue that of the nominated movies I've seen, most had a strong air of shallow-minded pretentious elitism. Personally, my perception is further effected by a distaste for slow, boring dramas
They're simply not funny anymore. Kimmel had some funny lines last year but he sure has lost all respect from me this year because he is no longer a comedian. He's a pussywhipped member of the liberal elite. There is only so much I can take from the woe is me, I've been oppressed elitist. You know when you're upset about something, so you talk about it with several people. And then there's this natural moment where you're just physically too over it to even bring it up any more? When is the moment going to happen for Hollywood?
As a woman, if I hear or see one more female empowerment speech or slogan (which I will) I'm going to lose my mind. I guess somehow, in my conservative upbringing, I managed to escape patriarchal oppression. I also didn't have my mom tell me, you know you can do anything RIGHT? YOU'RE A WOMAN. She and my father also didn't tell my brother that he shouldn't rape women. Yet somehow, we turned out balanced and okay....
Also, can someone please explain to me 3 billboards outside of ebbing missouri? I have a writing background and have a profound love of movies. I had to walk out of this one 45 mins in. I get 'satire.' I love all of the actors. But at what point in the movie do you actually give a shit about any of the characters? I'm not a movie talker, but I legit shouted WHAT?!! out loud when Woody Harrelson randomly spits blood on her face (the cancer, remember?) and suddenly frances mcdormand has so much empathy for him.
3 billboards was the most overrated film since forrest gump. You were smart to leave.
Forrest Gump is a great movie, what are you saying?
Don't tell me you're one of those hipster "if too many people like it, I hate it" type of people.
Isn't it more about blowhard speeches?
There is a multi-front cultural conflict that ranges across entertainment media, encompassing sports, movies, theatre, comics, streaming, and main stream cable television, as well as non-entertainment domains such as elementary schools, higher education, and workplaces - Google/Damore. I really can't think of a domain in which very loud cultural warriors, full time activists, and the ideologically possessed on both ends of the political spectrum aren't in conflict with each other and everyone else. To say that there are many reasons the Oscars may have reduced viewership is of course accurate, but its a very post-modernist way of describing something. Indications are there are not limitless reasons for the Oscars decline and that there are a few dominent reasons. The hypocritical moral posturing, ideological possession, and the lecturing fans year after year is certainly a dominate cause for the decline in viewership. Who are these millions watching the Oscars when there are so many entertainment options available?

The Oscars reflect the degraded state of today's motion picture industry. They are a disgusting spectacle of disgusting people disgustingly celebrating their disgus
put me down for didn't watch the oscars this year because i didnt want to be preached at. i was a little sorry to miss gary's speech as a result.
speaking of gary, you do realize that prior to this year his career was pretty much in the toilet because he was guilty of wrong-think, right?
I've never understood the draw of the "watch us congratulate ourselves" shows.
