Republican leaders like House Speaker Paul Ryan are very concerned about President Donald Trump's call for steel and aluminum tariffs, but Trump says he's not backing down. He said even our neighbors in Canada and Mexico might not be exempt.

  • A judge has ordered "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli to forfeit $7.36 million to the government for his fraud conviction, including his one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album.
  • So who is this Christopher Steele guy behind that now infamous Trump dossier, anyway?
  • An escort from Belarus looking for asylum in the United States says that she has hours of recordings that shed light on Russian meddling in the United States presidential election in 2016. She's currently in jail in Bangkok for plying her trade without a valid permit or visa and is afraid of getting sent back to Russia.
  • Former Trump aide Sam Nunberg has been summoned before a grand jury investigating that Russian election meddling but says he's refusing to go.
  • An immigrant from Mexico in the United States illegally confessed to using a stolen identity to get more than $350,000 in federal benefits over the course of 37 years.
  • A man was arrested for allegedly stealing Frances McDormand's best actress Academy Award, which was apparently taken from her last night at the Governors Ball. She has been reunited with the trophy.

A judge has ordered "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli to forfeit $7.36 million to the government...

The government being the chief victim.

    1. Juice   7 years ago

The value of the assets to be forfeited will then be applied to satisfying the amount Shkreli has to fork over to the government after "the resolution of any third-party claims" to the assets, the judge said in her ruling Monday.

If anyone is a third party here, it's the government, but they don't say how much is going to the people he defrauded and how much the government is keeping just because it can.

Both men filed paperwork Monday to run for the 1st Congressional District in eastern Arkansas. Crawford has represented the area for four terms.

The Death Wish remake has given various douche bag movie reviewers a case of the vapors worse than the original gave them. It is just propaganda for gun ownership!! The horror.

    1. colorblindkid   7 years ago

God, even the short Rotten Tomatoes summary explicitly states it's bad because of the timing and political message. Fuck those guys.

      1. John   7 years ago

I can think of no better time to make a movie reminding people of how often Cops won't help you and the need to be able to take matters into your own hands than after four cops stood outside and let some lunatic murder 17 kids in a high school.

        1. colorblindkid   7 years ago

For every person killed by a white kid with an "assault rifle", 50 kids/young adults are killed by young black men with handguns, usually illegally obtained.

Do liberals really not think a "war on guns" will end up exactly like the War on Drugs, with more gang-related violence after all arms sales are forced to the black market, and even more black men in prison?

          1. John   7 years ago

They don't think. And to the extent they do, they see more black men in prison as a good thing.

            1. colorblindkid   7 years ago

There have been numerous pundits and journalists who explicitly state "black on black crime isn't a thing". They're fucking delusional. They've completely rewritten the origins of the War on Drugs, as if it was 100% an evil conservative plot to throw black men in prison, not a largely bipartisan and popular effort often pushed by black urban leaders and even many "progressives".

Most of the worst policies are done for good reasons with good intentions, and when disaster occurs, instead of acknowledging "we were wrong and short-sighted" they deny they ever had anything to do with it and it was an evil policy from the start. This only blinds us when the same exact things happen again.

              1. BigT   7 years ago

It's all race according to colorblindkid.

          2. colorblindkid   7 years ago

There are two distinct "gun cultures" in America, and liberals and the media only talk about one, and it is the one that is statistically far less deadly than the "gun culture" conservatives complain about.

          3. TrickyVic (old school)   7 years ago

""Do liberals really not think a "war on guns" will end up exactly like the War on Drugs, with more gang-related violence after all arms sales are forced to the black market, and even more black men in prison?""

I've been pointing that out in various threads. I saw the illegal gun crack down that Giuliani started and Bloomberg continued. Stop and Frisk was one of the main tools.

            1. John   7 years ago

              Vic,

They wouldn't want it enforced on black people. They would declare a quota on black arrests and ensure only the right people were disarmed.

          4. Bubba Jones   7 years ago

Blacks don't use AR-15s. They use handguns.

AR-15s are a political target because they symbolize 1) white male republicans and 2) the fear that something is going to happen to your child at school.

Cops pile on because rifles are disproportionately used in the killing of cops. Which is itself a rare thing.

AR-15 bans are the intersection of helicopter parenting and virtue signaling.

Blacks killing each other by the thousands is just icky. No one cares.

"This gut punch of a remake will drive SJWs crazy. That's just one of many reasons to see Eli Roth's latest."

I highlighted the actual reason not to see this movie.

      1. John   7 years ago

I don't think that is a reason not to see the movie. If the movie is good, go see it. Why would you not see an otherwise good movie because doing so would make a bunch of assholes angry? That makes even less sense than going to it because of that.

        1. BestUsedCarSales   7 years ago

Because Eli Roth means it will be garbage. It almost certainly guarantees it is garbage. This is backed up by every single one of his movies being atrocious.

          1. John   7 years ago

I have no idea who that is or what movies he has made. So, I can't argue with you

The movie that is ripe for a remake is Dirty Hairy. Make the Scorpio Killer and Antifa type. That movie would be a license to print money today.

                1. BestUsedCarSales   7 years ago

Sure. I have no problem with Death Wish. And Death Wish 3 is a classic fever dream of entertainment. But Eli Roth is a truly garbage director.

                    +1 drill in the knee

            2. MP   7 years ago

Eli Roth is a shit director. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch The Green Inferno. Yeah, it's shit. But there are a couple of good gore scenes and laugh-out-loud moments that almost make it worth suffering through the rest of it. Oh, and it is a skewering of SJW numb-nuts, so it has that going for it too.

      2. mad.casual   7 years ago

I highlighted the actual reason not to see this movie.

When I saw the preview a couple weeks ago I thought "Whomever cast Bruce Willis in this role is a retard."

        I didn't realize how accurate I was.

The fact that critics are panning the movie for social awareness and messaging rather than the fact that it's going to be a poorly-made remake shows just how far Holywood has gone.

    Trump blowback:

Liberal women won't date conservative men.

    https://goo.gl/uEKNfk

He once brought a woman back to his place, and while checking out his bookshelf, she noticed some books by conservative thinkers, he says. "She was like, 'Oh no. First question: Did you vote for Trump?'," the reporter says. He told her no, but that he was conservative. "She was like 'I have to get out of here. I can't see you,' and left."

    ...

"We had a really nice time, but at the end of the date, he told me he didn't believe in global warming," she says. "I started laughing, because I'm from Colorado and didn't realize people actually didn't believe in global warming. But he was serious."

    ...

"I feel like they look at me and are like, here's a tall white dude with brown hair wearing loafers, and he probably has a picture of Reagan and the NRA in his bedroom or something," says one of the reporters from the conservative media company. "I just think they have a very hyperbolic view of what a conservative is."

    1. TrickyVic (old school)   7 years ago

That's ok, most conservative men don't want a woman in a pussy hat anyway.

    2. John   7 years ago

So Trump saved a bunch of men from dating feminists harpies who will likely ruin their lives. Is there anything that guy can't do?

Famous liberal women are hotter than famous conservative women (who trend older).

Women tend to be much less political than men are.

        1. Eek Barba Durkle   7 years ago

Women tend to be much less political than men are.

I have never - EVER - met a man who selected his friends, romantic interests and businesses used exclusively by if they are in the EXACT same political mindset as him.

With women, it's about 1/3 of them that do this.

          1. Palin's Buttplug   7 years ago

Sure, but that is not what I meant.

I meant if you lined up all the highly opinionated political types in the US the vast majority would be male.

            1. Bubba Jones   7 years ago

You obviously don't spend a lot of time talking to women.

              1. BestUsedCarSales   7 years ago

Hey butt-plugger, a moment's reflection: WTF does that statement imply about your estimation of the vast majority of women?

Anyway, I'm glad I married one smart enough to have opinions.

        2. Fancylad   7 years ago

liberal women are hotter, conservative women trend older

Yes, Pelosi, Hillary, Lynch, Mathews Burwell, Jewell, Pritzker, Solis, Napolitano and Wasserman Schultz were all super hot young things.

If I was forced to bed someone and was given a choice of say 2008's Palin or Ivanka versus one of the above hotties, I know what I'd pick.

        3. mad.casual   7 years ago

Women tend to be much less political than men are.

This is bankrupt on it's face. I think, at best, is the claim that they don't overtly claim to be as much or refute the notion more frequently. Otherwise, you would have to have avoided interaction with women for pretty much all of your life to think that they don't obsess about popularity contests, personal relationships, and social networks just as much if not more than men.

I freely admit that there are fewer female James Bond villains openly plotting to take over the world.

News flash, there are also white women who won't date black men. Conservative women who won't date liberal men. Asian chicks who won't date Asian dudes. Hell, I'm a guy who refuses to sleep with women.

Because getting caught selling baby bits a pocketing the change, voter fraud and offering kiddie prostitution tips.
"b-b-b-but the tapes were edited to look worse"
            They still did it.
"and the NYT and Factcheck said the voter fraud bit wasn't true"
Based mainly on interviews with Acorn management and the DNC. Golly it's like you haven't noticed one is the DNC's House Organ and the other is the Propagandaministerium.

FTR, I'm not the one that got Mikey banned. I don't feel badly for him, but I don't report people (and I actually don't know for certain why he was banned).

    1. John   7 years ago

Who is Mikey and why did he get banned?

      1. Palin's Buttplug   7 years ago

        Mike M.

        Recently Domestic Dissident

A real wingnut type (like you)

        1. John   7 years ago

The fact that they have never banned you is pretty definitive proof you are one of the current or former staffers sent here to troll.

          1. Palin's Buttplug   7 years ago

            Why would they ban me?

I actually agree with the editorial positions of Reason (even on immigration).

They did rip out a section of my posts once because they didn't want to get sued by someone famous I told on. (I won't go there again).

            1. John   7 years ago

They would ban you because you are the worst troll on here not named Mary Stack.

              1. Palin's Buttplug   7 years ago

You are the troll since you are a garden variety conservative.

I am an actual Cosmotarian like the Reason staff is accused of being (although I hate the term).

A cosmopolitan libertarian; a libertarian who holds socially liberal personal opinions about abortion, homosexuality, race, and other social issues. Compare to paleotarian.

What did he do to get banned?

            1. Telcontar the Wanderer   7 years ago

I'm pretty sure it was the "Anthropocene Park" article last weekend- Mikey told Crusty he was going to use his "professional software engineering skills" (his words) to figure out who Crusty is IRL. I think the intern that clears out the spam saw it and banned him. But I don't know for sure.

              1. Citizen X - #6   7 years ago

Just the other day, Mikey accidentally posted a link to the online continuing education catalog from whence he was obtaining said skills, so it's a legit threat maybe.

                1. BestUsedCarSales   7 years ago

Continuing Education groups are a great value and an important way to develop ones skills.

Doxing people is the one thing they are pretty strict about, which they should be. If he did that, he deserved to get banned.

Yes, he doxed someone. Posted her (initials M S, if that gives you the idea) name and address.

              3. Chipper Morning Baculum   7 years ago

That's fucking hilarious. Doubly so, because Crusty doesn't have an address.

                1. John   7 years ago

How do you dox a sock puppet? I don't understand how that could work.

                2. Entropy Drehmaschine Void   7 years ago

Vans down by the river don't get addresses.

            2. Citizen X - #6   7 years ago

Probably something to do with his tendency to pick badly-reasoned ad hominem fights with any Reason writer foolish enough to engage with his dumb ass.

    2. Citizen X - #6   7 years ago

Haha, Simple Mikey got banned? That is hilarious.

      1. Telcontar the Wanderer   7 years ago

And someone accused me of being the snitch because I was mocking his memory in the Frankenstein article thread. So I had to clear my name.

        1. John   7 years ago

Why did he get banned? What was there to snitch on him about?

        2. Citizen X - #6   7 years ago

Who could possibly care about that?

          1. Telcontar the Wanderer   7 years ago

Commenter: "Weigel's Cock-Ring". Who I suppose probably is Mikey returned, though he referred to himself in the third person, so maybe he's pretending to be someone new.

            1. Citizen X - #6   7 years ago

That is Mikey's level of humor, so maybe.

              1. Telcontar the Wanderer   7 years ago

Don't give him too much credit.

I think "Wiegel's cock ring" has been around before. So if it's not Mikey in another guise, it's an admirer of his. Which is even more frightening.

              1. BestUsedCarSales   7 years ago

Oh, now I remember. He got banned for linking to photos of him frotting with a doll of Weigel made out of the corpse of his mother.

                1. Telcontar the Wanderer   7 years ago

Oh, you don't have to kill a woman to make a doll out of her breasts and arms, I'm afraid.

                  1. BestUsedCarSales   7 years ago

Yeah, but it's a lot harder. And sadly, Mikey isn't one to pull off that procedure.

                    1. Telcontar the Wanderer   7 years ago

I will grant you that when he introduced her to me, I did not think to look for signs of animatronic machinery in her mouth and eye sockets.

He can just ask though too. I got banned once for making a post so low quality it was autoflagged as spam, and I just asked the admin to unban me.

While American lefties are still whining about how evil American "colonization" was and why every single problem in the world is because of us, Russia and China are actively recolonizing the world.

      1. colorblindkid   7 years ago

Like I want to get out of all of our wars as much as any libertarian, but our naive and stupid wars to try and "liberate" people and get friendly governments are not the same as aggressive wars of conquest to acquire new lands. America's the worst military empire ever. We spend billions conquering other countries, and instead of stealing their resources and wealth, we give them money and then they sell their resources to actually imperialistic nations.
