Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel Won't Resign, Says His Leadership Has Been 'Amazing'
Israel: "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, O.J. Simpson would still be in the record books."

In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel described his own leadership as "amazing," refused to resign from office, and attempted to pin the blame for law enforcement's myriad failures before and after the Parkland mass shooting on just one person: Marjory Stoneman Douglas's school resource officer, Scot Peterson.
When asked whether a more competent sheriff's office could have prevented the horrific tragedy that claimed the lives of 17 people, Israel said, "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, O.J. Simpson would still be in the record books."
Tapper countered with, "I don't know what that means."
Throughout the interview, Israel declined to take personal responsibility for what happened. He also refused to confirm or deny reports that several of his own deputies waited outside as the shooting was underway. When told that a first-responder was stopped by his deputies and prevented from entering the school to provide medical attention to victims, the sheriff said he didn't know whether that was true or not.
"At this point we have no reason to believe anyone acted incorrectly or correctly," said Israel.
Israel made one notable exception: Scot Peterson, the school resource officer who was caught on security camera declining to enter the building to confront Cruz. Peterson was placed on unpaid leave and has since resigned.
In the interview, Israel seemed prepared to blame everything on Peterson. The sheriff even implied that if it's true his own deputies did not enter the building, perhaps that was because the SRO said something over the radio that caused them to hesitate.
"We don't know if what they did… they heard something from Peterson," said Israel.
Israel even invoked Peterson's name when Tapper asked him about the 18 calls his office received about presumed shooter Nikolas Cruz's behavior over the years. The sheriff noted that his office had shared some of that information with Peterson. Israel also said he believed 16 of the 18 calls were handled correctly by his office, and he was investigating the other two. Recall that on November 30, 2017, the sheriff's office received a tip that described Cruz as a "school shooter in the making." Broward County referred the matter to the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office—Cruz was living in Palm Beach at the time—but took no further action, despite having been warned by a relative of Cruz that the teenager possessed weapons.
Israel maintained that his office wasn't aware of any information that would have suggested Cruz was capable of carrying out his threat against the school. In the future, to prevent tragedies, law enforcement officers need expand powers to detain dangerous people, he said.
"The whole crux of this is giving law enforcement, giving deputies, giving police officers, not only in Broward County but around the nation, expanded power to be able to do something more than just write a report," said Israel. "That's the only reason I went on CNN's townhall."
But it's not clear why law enforcement should be trusted with more power, given that various agencies had all the information they should have needed to do something about Cruz. As Tapper put it, "Are you really not taking any responsibility for the multiple red flags that were brought to the attention of the Broward sheriff's office about this shooter before the incident, whether it was people near him, close to him?"
Israel responded, "I can only take responsibility for what I knew about, I exercised my due diligence, I've given amazing leadership to this agency."

Well, I'm amazed...
I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.
This is what I do... http://www.onlinecareer10.com
Someone is trying to be amusing.
Fail.
I don't believe OJ Simpson was ever removed from the record books.
Imagine how a Republican would be attacked for "Making a joke at a tragic time like this"
Do we know he's not a Republican? Do we know he's not being attacked?
Who cares? The important question is... What fly rod did you get?
Echo glass 6.75 ft 3 weight
A 3 weight? What are you going after, brookies? Anything bigger will give you quite the fight on a 3 weight. Also, 6.75 is pretty short, but good far small, tight mountain streams.
I dunno, I've found that with anything less than 8 ft, the mountain lion can often get itself free.
Glass, huh? Short glass, at that. Interesting. Where do you normally fish?
Congrats. Enjoy!
What do you fish with, Francisco? I am partial to TFO rods.
All but one of my rods are Sage. My favorite is a 3wt Z-Axis. I use it 90% of the time, the exceptions being when it's windy or I'm fishing big water and then I use a 5wt Sage One.
If either of you are ever in North Central Montana...give me a shout.
I do a lot of warm water fly fishing, many of which take a 5 wt. I've caught smallies, various sunfish, stripers, perch, carp, and shad on a 5 wt.
I would love to check out some Montana streams. I will have to go out there sometime.
When I lived in Tex-ass I used to catch largemouths on a fly rod. That was a blast!
Brook trout in central Virginia, though I'm new at this. But lots of trees and small streams. That rod was very highly recommended by the shop owner (and a few of his customers that were just passing through).
Cool. I love brookies. My oldest dog is named Brook. Followed by Bow and Cutty.
Are they bird dogs? What breeds?
Yes. Brittanys.
Oh yeah, central VS is brushy as hell. I use a short Tenkara rod sometimes. Go check out Dry River by Harrisonburg. Lots of brookies in there.
I'll keep that in mind, thanks!
The important question is... What fly rod did you get?
Echo glass 6.75 ft 3 weight
Euphemistic flirting is the best flirting.
Do you mind? We are comparing rods here.
Cosmo scum.
Cosmo scum is great for carp.
"Cosmo scum is great for carp."
and crabs....
Yes we know he's not a Pub and the number of defending him and the deputy is mind boggling.
Yeah, he's a saloon!
Yes, we do. We also know that he'll be up for reelection in November 2020. I imagine his opponents will be sure to shine light on this fiasco as well his past indiscretions.
To save the scrolling, here's a direct link.
He is good friends with Hillary Clinton and supported her bid for President in 2008 and 2016. I think that clarifies his party affiliation. Israel is not being attacked in the way a Republican would. Look at all the vitriol and hate spewed from the Left at Republicans and especially at the NRA. Nobody on the Left is blaming Israel and/or the Broward Country Sheriff's Department. Or blaming the FBI. Or blaming Obama's racist school discipline policies that allowed disruptive and delinquent black kids roam like packs of wild dogs through the schools, attacking teachers and administrators knowing they would not be punished.
https://t.co/Nf3DCXR9fn
NO. They all blame the AR-15 which has still not been shown to the public.
Amusing, amazing...what does he think he is, Muhammad Ali?
I don't know what bugs me more this mans arrogance or incompetence?
He is a prime example of what coercive monopoly government breeds.
That and backed by a friendly media that will shield him as best they can.
CNN put him on so he could look like an asshole on national TV. I'm not sure that's "shielding."
Then they bring on crying kid 1 who defends him. Don't worry they will be in the "How dare you attack the Sheriff" mode within the hour. LOL
"Then they bring on crying kid 1 who defends him. Don't worry they will be in the "How dare you attack the Sheriff" mode within the hour. LOL"
Followed by three more sessions on how outlawing guns would have made this impossible!
He got to answer questions from a guy who has already proven friendly in the past.
Modified limited hangout.
I don't think CNN ever fathomed what an asshat he was capable of being. They're doing the best they can to make him look good, but you can't fix this level of stupid under any circumstances.
lol the media hate charismatic sheriffs. I mean look at the way they treat Joe Arpaio and David Clarke.
Correction, the media hates charismatic Republican sheriffs. Change that R to a D, though, and they're golden!
Watching and listening to this guy, it's like he thinks he's Donald Trump.
No no, Donald's leadership has been "phenomenal. Fantastic. World-class."
It actually has, relatively speaking. But the bar has been steadily lowered since Reagan, and after Obama it didn't take much.
That's amazing...how incompetence and arrogance so often go together
Dunning-Kruger rears its ugly head again.......
It is a little too on point for a man named "Israel" to be offering up a scapegoat.
Of course we'll never know what was said over the radio because nobody was listening to a scanner or recording that, especially the boss of the entire department.
O.J. Simpson is in the record books. His 143.1 rushing yards per game in 1973 (you know, the only 14-game season where anybody rushed for more than 2000 yards?) is still an NFL record.
Also, if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, NOBODY WOULD EVER GO HUNGRY!
So this sheriff is now also responsible for the famine of millions or people worldwide? What an asshole.
Not a very well rounded diet, though, so they'd probably still be poorly nourished
I think he was speaking in slang. Ifs is actually short for incredibly fucking stupid (referring to those who voted for him), buts is a typo it should be 'butts' and carries the usual meaning. Candy is either drugs or sex so more in the line of "hey little girl, want some candy?" and nuts is shorthand for testicles. The bit about O.J. at the end is offered as proof along the lines of "naive isn't in the dictionary". So translating the whole thing it's basically "you stupid, ignorant assholes can go fuck yourselves and you'll believe anything I tell you because you're so gullible".
Given that he's in a county that went 2:1 for Hillary, it's not like he has to worry-- what are voters going to do, elect a Republican sheriff?
Yeah, the NFL isn't like the NCAA or Olympic committee where if they decide they don't like someone, they "vacate" their record.
Oh look, Soave, Tapper, and their lib dem friends in the media are blaming a tragedy on law enforcement
Growing up we were taught to respect police officers - one could save your life someday - but Hollyweird and the liberal media hate law and order.
Articles like this is why Trump is going to get reelected. #MAGA2020!
I don't believe that all law enforcement should be respected, especially when it has proven itself to be undeniably incompetent, poorly trained and flat out wrong in the way it handled its job.
Also, Israel isn't "law enforcement" - he's a politician, was elected to his job as sheriff and probably had as many credentials for the job as did Obama for the presidency. He was heartily endorsed by Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, the representative for Broward County. He would be a fool to run for re-election (he probably will, and will count on the 30 second attention span of his voters), but DWS may have a lot more 'splainin' to do if she endorses him again.
I hope the sheriff realizes that "amazing" is not necessarily a positive description.
In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper
FAKE NEWS!! FAKE NEWS!!!!!
God, you're an idiot.
Seconded.
I know how wingnuts think.
It must piss you off.
God, you're an idiot.
The motion carries.
+1
The way you put right wingnuts in their place makes me cum all over myself, over and over again!

shit.
Christ, what an asshole.
Peterson didn't go in because he knew it was the boy he had bullied for years (and told us we should pay for him to live on campus so he could 'protect' us from boys like little Nikky).
It makes me wonder if he had been sodomizing the kid too. That would make a lot of sense.
That would explain why the deputies wanted trailers on campus.
Indeed.
So amazing.
I heard some teacher's union lady claiming that teachers can't be trained to confront shooters and my first thought was that she must have a pretty low opinion of teachers if she thinks they're dumber than the cops who get trained to confront shooters. But then she went on to use the example of the SRO who refused to go in as proof that even cops can't be trained to confront a shooter with an AR-15, nobody can be trained to face such an awesome amount of firepower. Therefore the only solution is to ban these guns. Which made me wonder - then why did anybody bother calling 911 if a shooter with an AR-15 is effectively a Terminator? Why did the city police who arrived go charging into the building, just as they had been trained, and later express surprise that the sheriff's deputies there hadn't charged in? Why do we spend so much money on our military if one guy with an AR-15 is an unstoppable force? How are you going to take away my AR-15 when I have an AR-15 and am therefore unconfrontable? And lastly, we aren't talking about arming teachers so that they can confront shooters, like when they hear of a school shooting they go leaping into their cars and race off to whatever school the shooter is at like Batman, we're talking about arming teachers so that they have a response when the shooter confronts them. You're claiming that nobody can protect the teachers and therefore you're going to deny them the right to protect themselves? You're a piece of shit, lady.
Well said.
I have 20 years of handgun and AR-15 training and experience. The AR-15 is just a rifle. Its advantage is accuracy at long range, which is less relevant indoors. It is not some magic blanket that wards off bullets. All semi-automatic handguns have the same rate of fire as the AR-15. It is absolutely possible for a handgun shooter to take down a rifle shooter inside a building.
But the coward cop, Scot Peterson did nothing.
And here is a recent case where a police officer took down a would be rampage rifle killer with a long shot from a pistol while outdoors.
The Cop Who Stopped Larry McQuilliams
http://austin.com/austin-cop-s.....with-texas
Quote:
McQuilliams opened fire at the courthouse, a bank, and the Mexican Consulate before turning his sights to the Austin Police Department at 2:32 a.m. Johnson was standing near HQ, holding the reins of not one but two horses when McQuilliams arrived, shooting wildly.
Still holding onto the horses' reins with one hand, Johnson returned fire with the other. With a single shot from Johnson's Smith & Wesson M&P; .40 pistol, McQuilliams lay dead on the pavement more than 300 feet away, his might-have-been-deadly reign of terror cut short.
--- End quote ---
WHat do you do when natural rights come into conflict? Well? What do you do? YOU CANNOT SOLVE THAT PROBLEM CAN YOU!
YOU CLAIM that history teazchers NEED to be armed. Well why not arm the LAWYERS? The LAWyers need to be armed and use their LAWS ON US! The authoritarian right and autoritarian left know this well enough.
cyberbullying: abusing somebody using electronic communications and authoritarian BULLIES like you claim it is not happening.

Left - Right = Zero
Sorry, that was intended as a reply to Hihn.
It was good.
Needs more bold face and less complete sentences
*Fewer* complete sentences, General Garbage Grammar.
No, I meant sentences that were less complete
Kelsey's uncle?
The complete lack of links to the very thread that the comment was on gave you away immediately.
Excuse me, but Left - Right = SHIT FUCK BALLZ!
Left - Right = INFINITY!
Aleph0 or Aleph1?
You are right on the money, Jerryskids. Teachers who voluntarily offer to train and be armed will be a great resource in protecting children against shooters. Why? They will be motivated to effectively fight back, even if just to protect the classroom in which they specifically teach because their own life will be in mortal danger.
Even if they engage the shooter without killing the shooter, they will distract him from his demented goal of killing students. Protecting the children with whom they've been entrusted is their duty as a teacher. Unfortunately, doing this requires many to give up the utopian view they have of a world without violence and guns. Many on the left would prefer to sacrifice a sizeable number of children in order to make their "point" about how bad guns are.
Well, let's be honest. With four deputies sitting outside, the policy is to wait until the shooter runs out of either victims or bullets.
Also should terrify people that the kid is out with that AR-15 and...wait, he was stopped and caught?
Thank God for Scott Israel and the Broward County Sheriff's Department, who have turned out to be so over-the-top clownish and craven that they cannot be ignored even by the most willful. They're an escape valve from the heat when we need it most.
They have saved our asses, because we are losing, and the GOA seem to be the only ones who fully realize this and how much in danger we are right now. Everyone else seems to be walking around as cocky as ever, as though everything is going to be fine just like it always has been. It is not.
They have saved our asses, because we are losing
Losing what?
Everyone else seems to be walking around as cocky as ever, as though everything is going to be fine just like it always has been. It is not.
Check out Negative Nancy over here. Everything is going to be fine, sweetums - we will get through this together.
Yes. The AMAZING Scott Isreal has beclowned not only himself but the entire department. But they've taken the focus off of the FBI who for some reason has jurisdiction of some sort here. I for one am sick and tired of recent attacks on our intelligence professionals. County Sheriff? Meh.
So the lessons that the media and the left (but I repeat myself) have learned from the Parkland school shooting:
* Local police were called to the shooter 39 times, but he was never arrested or committed which could have placed him on the background check list.
* The Broward County Sheriff's Office was informed twice that the shooter was planning a school shooting, but did nothing.
* The FBI were informed two times, once very credibly, that the shooter was planning a school shooting but did nothing.
* The police officer assigned to guard the school hid outside the school building like a coward in the critical moments while the youngsters inside he had to protect were slaughtered.
* This is all the fault of the NRA.
* Law abiding citizens should be disarmed since the government will protect them from criminals.
It almost might seem to a truly hardened cynic as if they let this attack happen on purpose.
But of course, nobody would even think of ever letting something so horrible happen. No siree.
"it's not clear why law enforcement should be trusted with more power"
Why do you hate America's Heroes traitor? They'll spend eternity sitting next to Jesus and do you know where you'll be? That's right, right next to Obama.
Sitting next to either for more than a year or so has to be boring as fuck.
At this point we have no reason to believe anyone acted incorrectly or correctly
Since no one seems to have acted at all this statement is technically correct
Like his replacement would be any better anyways.
This entire article reads like Robby Soave squatted over an American flag and took a cosmo dump all over it, and then wiped his ass with the Constitution.
Also, do I have to be the first person to notice that the shooter's last name is "Cruz?" If he is actually legal - which I highly doubt - I bet his father or mother aren't. Build the wall and save our children!
His grandfather killed Kennedy.
Truth.
No doubt
How after over a week does the Sheriff not have the details of what went down with his deputies? Also, he keeps coming back to "give me more power" when he can't clearly articulate why his deputies couldn't act on the multitude of complaints that were brought to them. We want careful due process...but we had tortured animals....youtube boasts....a history of violent outbursts.....and access to a semi-automatic rifle....seems like we need to know why the Baker act wasn't triggered and Cruz involuntarily examined for mental illness. What would be amazing is actually having the Sheriff explain this...
His policy is wait till shooter runs out of bullets or victims, so officers get home safely. All deputies got home safely. WIn.
Are any of those crimes? (with the possible exception of tortured animals...and then you have to prove it)
What would you like to see done based upon hearsay? Lock him up BEFORE he does anything wrong?
I think the guy runs a cowardly department and should be fired for it...but I don't want his thugs to have the power to arrest based on thought crime, do you?
Multiple times he claimed to want to be a "school shooter".....sociopaths have a common trait of abusing animals....he exhibited anti-social episodes of attacking people with no provocation....I think getting him evaluated by mental health professionals seems like a reasonable request. The Baker Act allows for involuntary commitment....not arrest for a crime. Are you comfortable with mentally impaired individuals being able to access guns?
Is claiming you want to be a school shooter a crime? Should it be? Can you prove it wasn't hyperbole? Should folks here be locked up or mentally evaluated because they said they want to see a certain individual run through a wood chipper?
Hows abouts we punish those guilty of actual crimes and stop wasting our time trying to prevent crime by any means other than deterrence? Preempting crime is completely impossible and does nothing but piss on individual rights.
People need to nut up and accept the fact that the world is a dangerous place and you can't stop crazy people from doing crazy shit.
Who are you, Comrade Question?
Da?
Is claiming you want to be a school shooter a crime? Should it be? Can you prove it wasn't hyperbole?
It is a fairly specific threat. Perhaps not specific enough to be illegal, but frankly when someone says something like that they're asking for law enforcement attention. Maybe it's not a crime, but certainly deserving of some surveillance. Determining whether it was hyperbole can be done by said surveillance and/or bringing him in for questioning.
Should folks here be locked up or mentally evaluated because they said they want to see a certain individual run through a wood chipper?
Last I saw, the courts agreed that the subpoena of Reasonoids who made those statements was legal.
Hows abouts we punish those guilty of actual crimes and stop wasting our time trying to prevent crime by any means other than deterrence?
He is guilty of an actual crime. The only difference now is that a bunch of teachers and kids are dead.
Sure. He is now.
Try him. Convict him. Punish him. System worked. Case closed.
Unfortunately, having a victim is (or should be) a prerequisite to there being a crime if one actually cares about liberty.
(for clarification...a credible threat does have a victim and is a crime...but it's also tough to prove)
The system didn't work for all those dead people. All that punishing him after the fact accomplishes is (maybe) deterring future crimes by others. Not that I'm against his punishment, but it doesn't come remotely close to restoring what he took.
a credible threat does have a victim and is a crime
Multiple problems with this:
- victimization can hardly depend on something so fuzzy as credibility
- a threat is a crime even if it is not communicated to the target of the threatened violence; it's hard to justify calling someone a victim of an act that doesn't even affect them.
It would be more defensible to say that a threat is considered a crime because it is evidence that an act of violence is about to be committed, and we cannot coercively act to prevent that violence unless the threatener is deemed to have committed a crime.
Sure it did. He'll be punished for his transgression.
Um...
Sure it did. He'll be punished for his transgression.
And that helps the dead people how again?
And your link (a) isn't about victimization, only what it takes for threats to be a crime, and (b) is wrong in that threats communicated to people other than the targets of the threatened violence can still be criminal.
My original statement (the one you quoted) wasn't about victimization. It was about when a threat is a crime.
Libertarian philosophy (not necessarily US law, as there are plenty of victimless crimes under US code) requires a victim for something to be a crime.
Yeah, I know the dogma. Except it doesn't work in practice -- that would make counterfeiting, treason, perjury in favor of a defendant in a criminal trial, obstruction of justice, etc. into non-crimes. Along with threats communicated to someone other than the target of the threatened violence.
Very few libertarians would suggest that those should not be crimes. Maybe anarcho-capitalists, but they think nothing should be a crime, so don't really count.
Wait, so is perjury in favor of a prosecutor a non-crime? Because that should totally be a crime.
The problem is if you're going to be an advocate for gun free zones, you need to at least follow up on your back up plans, which these assholes did not. They were so caught up in how the world should be they didn't understand it for what it was. Classic progressive (and cosmo-libertarian mistake.)
I agree, deterrents should be the only means to stop future crimes, but it isn't the world that Sheriff Israel lived in, that was not within his job description, and he did not fail to follow his job description out of principle, just pure stupidity and incompetence.
Didn't he threaten someone or point a gun at some family member?
Some of the things the cops 'visited' him for seemed pretty illegal to me.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Longstanding friction between U.S. President Donald Trump and two top aides, the National Security Adviser and the Chief of Staff, has grown to a point that either or both might quit soon, four senior administration officials said.
Both H.R. McMaster and John Kelly are military men considered by U.S. political observers as moderating influences on the president by imposing a routine on the White House. They have also convinced Trump of the importance of international alliances, particularly NATO, which he has criticized as not equally sharing its burdens with the United States.
More rats leaving sinking ship.
Either they are calling The Dotard a "fucking moron" or they are getting out.
^ Gets it.
They can tell #TrumpRussia is going to result in Drumpf's removal from office. Possibly resulting in President Hillary Clinton, which we should have had all along.
MAGA = Mueller Ain't Going Away
I agree with that scenario: Ryan could nominate anyone to be president.
In the same manner, Monica Lewinsky could still become president.
It could happen.
Cross your fingers and keep dreaming, lovers!
I happen to know several anonymous senior White House officials and they tell me Trump's Secret Service codename is "Ollie", as in "Ollie Tabooger", because Trump spends so much time rooting around in his nostrils. Oddly, he picks his nose with his left thumb so any time you see him making that secret "White Power" sign with his left hand, he's really trying to get a booger off his thumb. If it's with his right hand, it's just the White Power sign. True story.
Based on an "anonymous" source "close to the administration," no doubt. The Left's wet dream of seeing Trump & Kushner led out of the White House in handcuffs will never die.
Well, his leadership is "amazing," though not in a good way...
Did they have that information?
Because all I see is reports of threats. That's generally not enough to get someone detained. "should have investigated' what?
'These people said you threatened them.'
'Well, I didn't.'
'But there are a lot of them saying this.'
'Well, I didn't threaten them.'
'OK.'
They may have had the information to do something (where there's smoke there's fire and all that) but we've* deliberately not let them have the ability to do something - because that something is basically 'detain whoever they feel like' - which is exactly what that Sheriff wants.
THIS! THIS! THIS!
I don't want them to detain someone on hearsay, but they should probably have investigated. I don't know what, if any, concrete stuff this guy had lying around. Maybe that isn't known yet. But if he did have, say, written plans or something, and that was missed because multiple reports just weren't followed up, then that's pretty bad.
Fair nuff.
But I suspect there wasn't enough to act on. Which is how it should be. For every "threat" that gets made on the internet that gets acted on, I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands that don't. I don't want cops to have the power to lock up people for making jokes on the Facethingy. Which appears to be exactly what this assclown is asking for.
For every "threat" that gets made on the internet that gets acted on, I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands that don't.
Maybe if we respond to "humorously intended" internet threats with reasonable searches and a free ride downtown to be questioned, there will be less haystack for the truly threatening needles to hide in.
You ever get into a squabble on the playground where you've said, "I'll kill ya" to the other kid? Did you mean it? Do you want cops to be able to haul you downtown for that?
Dude, think about the can of tyrannical shit you're asking to be opened. Cops have too much leeway as it is.
Yes. And I was punished by my teachers and parents for it. That's how I grew into a civilized human being.
When adults do such things, how much more should they be held personally responsible for it?
Criminally responsible for hyperbole? It's not a true threat unless it's credible. If not credible it falls under this:
You can't have it both ways. The quoted text makes no distinction between credible and non-credible threats.
If you take the first amendment literally, then credible threats are protected. If you carve out an exception for "speech" that endangers public safety, then arguably all threats are unprotected, due to the fact that they provide a haystack for credible threat needles to hide in.
That's incorrect. A threat doesn't have to be directed at the would-be victims of the threatened violence to be a crime.
And of course, in this case Cruz stating that he wanted to become a school shooter would probably have made people at his most recent school feel as if they might be hurt, especially given his history there.
That's incorrect.
I provided a link. Take it up with the lawyer that wrote it.
Appeal to authority -- by an anarchist. Now I've seen everything.
Not an anarchist
So if Alice tells Bob she's going to kill Charlie at noon tomorrow at 5000 Main Street, and shows him the knife she plans on using to do it.... that is not a criminal threat? The police would tell Bob to get lost if he reports it, because First Amendment?
Sure it is.
You've missed the entire point.
Has nothing to do with whom it's communicated to and I never said it did.
I said it needs to be credible and not hyperbole. IF it's hyperbole or a joke it falls under 1A.
Which is not what happened here.
Your purported solution wouldn't have prevented this crime.
Maybe if they get the nickel ride on the way downtown there will be even less of a haystack.
Maybe if we let the cops grab you from class and beat the shit out of you behind the school there would be less.
Investigate what though?
Threats uncorroborated by evidence aren't evidence to get a warrant to enter a home to get the evidence needed to get the warrant to get the evidence?
We don't let cops break into homes because someone said that someone else said something bad to them either.
Because all I see is reports of threats. That's generally not enough to get someone detained.
Bullshit. A witness' report of a crime is often enough to arrest and charge someone if the witness appears credible. Especially if there are multiple independent reports.
Besides, they didn't even need to detain him to prevent the shooting. They could have suspended him from school and posted guards at the doors to make sure he didn't enter.
Dude. He wasn't currently enrolled at that school. Former student.
I see, that wasn't clear from the reporting I had seen.
Regardless, they could have posted guards to make sure he didn't enter since that was the most likely place for him to carry out his threat.
1. No it isn't.
2. How do the police tell the difference between a 'credible witness' and someone who can lie really well?
3. Kid wasn't a student at that school already.
4. How many guards at how many doors is enough?

Trump privately talks up executing all big drug dealers
In Singapore, the death penalty is mandatory for drug trafficking offenses. And President Trump loves it. He's been telling friends for months that the country's policy to execute drug traffickers is the reason its drug consumption rates are so low.
"He says that a lot," said a source who's spoken to Trump at length about the subject. "He says, 'When I ask the prime minister of Singapore do they have a drug problem [the prime minister replies,] 'No. Death penalty'."
https://goo.gl/KdzS4D
Giving the maximum available penalty to drug traffickers is actually a pretty widely-shared position across the spectrum of American politics.
People who are absolutist death penalty opponents would of course be against it, but most of them favor life without parole for drug traffickers.

"In the future, to prevent tragedies, law enforcement officers need expand powers to detain dangerous people, he said."
As usual, when accusation and evidence of complete incompetence arise, the answer is always the same. We need more power. We need more funding. Nevermind that we are grossly incompetent and cause more harm than good already, what we really is for you to surrender more or your freedom and give us some more money. Fuck this guy.
Funny thing is, if things had gone the other way and the Broward Deputy had neutralized the shooter before he killed anyone, the demand would be the same: more power and more funding.
If you spend a little time listening to anybody who works for the government, you will note the common theme.

I see one more Hihn-fected thread. Mary was a saint by comparison.
Why should Israel resign?
They have their scapegoat: Guns.
And the NRA.
Why is this even a debate?
I called Budget on Friday to voice my dissatisfaction with their knee jerk decision to cut ties with the NRA. The poor lady in the complaint department told me "you aren't the first and definitely won't be the last. I am not sure why the made this stupid decision."
When I pointed out the NRA is over 5 million members strong she replied 'yeah it's pretty stupid to make 5 million customers, especially passionate ones, mad at you.'
Your argument on this seems to be going in two opposing directions:
1. The Sheriff is to blame because the department was called several times about Cruz and his potential as a school shooter, but after coming to his home, they did nothing to stop him. (being that he had committed no crimes, there was not a whole lot the police could do. You can't just toss someone in jail because you think they might be a criminal.)
2. The police are ridiculous for suggesting that they need additional powers to handle the problem.
In other words, everyone else is wrong, no matter what they do.
Well done! We'll make a libertarian of you yet.
Amazing leadership. OK, 17 dead students and teachers but WTF. Otherwise amazing leadership.
Tapper was really pissed off at Israel because only a few days earlier at a much-ballyhooed (by the left) CNN Town Hall in Parkland essentially on gun control, Tapper had orchestrated an effort to use (abuse) the emotional upset of the victims (students, friends, and families) as a weapon in Tapper's progressive/Democrat agenda of legislating strict gun control. One of his featured principals speaking on behalf of legislative solutions was none other than Sheriff Israel. When it came out that Isreal's sloppily managed sheriff's department was more at fault for the massacre than any lack of gun-control legislation, it made Tapper look like a fool for featuring Israel at his Town Hall forum, and giving him a platform to blame the NRA, as he did, without challenging any of Israel's self-serving bullshit. So in point of fact, Israel whooped Tapper, not the other way around.

"Left - Right = Zero"
All ONE! All ONE! All ONE!
Not all teachers and not all officers. But, yes, they'd be braver than this officer. Several teachers did intervene, which demonstrates that.
Oooooooooohhhhhhhh. Ooooohhh. Ahhhhh.
Whew.
All this nonsense checks out.
You are the most boring commenter here.
England made up for it with mass car attacks and bombing a concert. Switzerland has lots of guns and no mass shootings. And it's inalienable.
If you measure by nothing but gun deaths, then guns are bad. Bad!
And that tells you everything you need to know about gun control.
England beats us in acid attacks, too.
Have you given any thought to moving to Canada or France, Mary? I think you would be a lot happier there.
There is an estimated 114M handguns, 110M rifles, and 86M shotguns in the U.S. The exact number of semi-automatic rifles and handguns is unknown, but is obviously in the millions. It would seem like a challenge to attempt to voluntarily collect all of these weapons...or would you only look to only stop new purchases? So, part of this is just pragmatics.....when you have so many guns not being used for homicides or crime....and people who have a dubious opinion of whether cops will be around to protect them from violence.....how do you get compliance?
Also, the U.S. gun homicide numbers are around 14,000.....when you subtract out drug-related and gang-related homicides....you are left with around 2,500...of which only a fraction is due to rifles of any kind. There are more people killed by knives and fists than are killed by "assault rifles". If numbers matter, is this the most productive use of our time and resources?
THAT is what "unalienable" means
LOL - do you even know what a dictionary is? You're nowhere close to what unalienable means.
Dumbfuck Hihnsano is desperate for that gun ban!
The most deadly mass shooting of children happened in socialist paradise of Norway.
Dumbfuck Hihnsano hates this part of Scalia's ruling, because he's too much of a dumbfuck to read past page 1:
3. The handgun ban and trigger lock requirement (as applied to self-defense) violate the Second Amendment.
Hihn is the one commenter who truly gets me.
*hugs*
[waves garlic]
Most common citizen owned long gun in 1789 was a flint lock musket
Most common citizen owned long gun in 2018 is an A/R 15
So yeah, the citizens' right to keep and bear and A/R 15 shall not be infringed.
That isn't going to happen and you know it.
I have to agree with Hihn on this one . I believe we are only about one or two mass shootings away from another assault weapons ban....
I'll wear you down, beefcake.
I'm pretty sure the 16th amendment was repealed by our Right to Property, and other unphalienable rights not enumerated.
When do I get to be a judge?
So you should learn what the word means to avoid embarrassment. And Switzerland still has no mass shootings but your irrational fear of objects is noted.
Are you confusing the Declaration of Independence with the Constitution?
And yet you can't answer the simple question of how the mere act of owning a gun conflicts with Life, Liberty, or the Pursuit of Happiness.
More certain than you soon falling in the bathtub?
Some the tree of liberty has to be watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
And that means we need big guns. QED.
But, those numbers include suicides and accidents!
lol
*fingers crossed*
You're damn right I mean it just the way Thomas Jefferson did when he said it, because..
Swing! Swing! Swing!
Did I hit it?
Don't worry, Hihn. Crusty has no standards. So you still stand a chance with him.
Suicide by accident is just an accident!
Keep yelling, assholes!
It's Hihnsanity!
Nigga, you don't even read the sources you cite.
No, I'm bored by people who think they are much, much, much smarter than they actually are, and who bring absolutely nothing new to a conversation and haven't since maybe their third comment ever on the site.
I see a teacher crouched behind her desk with her gun trained on the door waiting for the shooter to open the door. Did you not see, or did you ignore, the part where I said nobody's necessarily expecting the teachers to confront the shooter but that they might want to be armed in the event the shooter confronts them? Having some armed teachers might have a deterrent effect better than a sign announcing you're not allowed to bring guns into the school. There was the coach who died shielding his students, did you think he was chasing the shooter down the hall?
Lemme get this straight: you contend that the cowardice and incompetence of those cops is an argument *against* teachers defending themselves and their students?
You really need to get your meds adjusted, Mikey.
-jcr
When did you turn into a jock sniffer for law enforcement?
Trained officers arrest people for pot routinely. We should ALL do that, because cops...
The handgun and the 'semi-automatic assault weapon' fire at the same rate, one pull, one bullet. The only thing that could make it 'rapid' is pulling the trigger faster
I smell the smell of a leftist creating a straw man: the vision of a teacher charging a shooter as if he or she was going to go all Rambo on his ass.
Huh? If I've got an AR-15 I'm an unstoppable killing machine nobody can confront according to this lady. I can go wherever I want, do whatever I want if I've got an AR-15. So why would I stay in my house? I can go take over South America with my AR-15 and declare myself Lord God Emperor if I want and nobody can stop me.
No, I'm demonstrably smarter than you. I'd bet on it. Self-righteous? Not generally, but in this case I guess I'll own up to that.
And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for you meddling Hihns!
God, get back on your meds
God doesn't need meds. Hihn, however...
You really are a fucking idiot.
Because she is fucking trained you dipshit. She can't do any worse than a cop who shoots a fucking poodle because he was scared for his life.
"How does she know he's a shooter?"
My best guess is the the guy with the gun shooting people indiscriminately would be fairly easily identifiable as the shooter.
The operative word here is CONCEALED WEAPON, dipshit. Nobody but hte administration and the teacher will know if they do it correctly.
Second, unarmed teachers and coaches died protecting their students. Think what they might have done with handguns.
Finally, if you are looking for the shooter, look for the guy with a gun not screaming and running.
How are you smart enough to turn your computer on in the morning.
You have nostrils? I guess I lost the Hinh is an alien bet.
Kentucky long rifles were the assault rifle in its day.
Their day.
Are you bullying again, Hinh?
Nigga, you haven't seen your dick in decades, don't be projecting your own puny pee-pee insecurities on everyone else.
Who says aliens don't have nostrils? Racist.
"Christ, what an asshole"
Yes, it is well known that more than half the population is just as retarded as Hihn and doesn't realize "assault weapon" is a meaningless term.
I don't know how many people I've stumped with the question: "What is the functional difference between a hunting rifle and an assault weapon?"
God, Hihn, you're retarded.
Now please remove DC, Baltimore and Chicago. What do the numbers look like?
Sad fact for you, Hihn, is that there is nowhere safer in the world than any area in the United States outside a few major cities.
Also, you're a fucking retarded commie, fuck off.
I know that if a kid with an AR busted into my classroom and started shooting, it would not be hard to identify the shooter. Use your brain. The whole arguement for allowing teachers to carry is about this situation exactly.
As a high schooler I could run more than a half a mile in 3 minutes. It is actually quite a bit of time.
Yes. For the majority of that time. Pulling a trigger isn't a long-term investment of time.
Actually Hihnstupidity.
Because we have lots of guns in the U.S.
Why do we not have censorship of speech?
Because we have lots of guns in the U.S.
Canada has a rising gun violence problem.
And we have...gun control.
Why....it's almost as if there are other factors at play!
Why do we have higher drug addiction rates than the rest of the developed world?
Because we have such liberal drug laws! But, we don't... we actually have amongst the most stringent.
It's almost as if the prevalence of a thing is not merely determined by whether/ how strictly it is regulated.
I'm glad you brought up the constitution. Brilliant.
Now carefully the 2A. Then go read the federalist papers. Then explain to me why we have a 2nd Amendment and why it is important.
No irrelevant link back upthread? Son, I am disappoint.
Domestic Dissident + Palin's Buttplug < Michael Hihn If we are measuring on an annoyance level.
"Right-wing Snowflakes - Left-wing Snowflakes = Zero"
You stupid shit, if you had ANY idea regarding the issues you post about, you might have some relevance.
You don't. And you don't.
Stupid Shit Hihn = Zero,
Fuck off, Mike. If you had a lick of intelligence, you'd be embarrassed.
Tell me the functional difference between a hunting rifle and an assault weapon, retard.
Do you even know what "semi-automatic" means?
God you are stupid. Mind numbingly dumb.
He really is.
Move those goalposts you schizophrenic piece of shit.
Venezuela has gun control. And homicide rate per 100,000 population is 110. Twenty times USA.
Dumbfuck Hihnsano hates this part of Scalia's ruling, because he's too much of a dumbfuck to read past page 1:
3. The handgun ban and trigger lock requirement (as applied to self-defense) violate the Second Amendment.
You realize that the wiki page has a chart just for America broken up into the fifty states plus DC and Puerto Rico right? That a normal thinking human being can look at that and see what three places are ridiculously pulling the average up?
Four trained officers were cowards. Nobody was shooting at THEM, that's why. If you are a target, like the kids and teachers were, of COURSE you'd want to be able to shoot back. Jesus.
But enough about your coke habit.
The failure of the court to enforce the second amendment doesn't change what it says, dumbass.
-jcr
How is "What is the difference between a hunting rifle and an assault rifle" not the core issue in your "let's ban all assault rifles" dream world?
"If teachers are thought to be armed, they would be shot first"
Good. I'd MUCH rather a potential shooter come into the situation with the thought "first, I'll attack all the fully armed adults" as opposed to "first, I'll slaughter all the unarmed children".
By that rationale, these scumbags would go after the SRO first. Didn't happen at Columbine, didn't happen at Sandy Hook, and it didn't happen here. Why? BECAUSE SCHOOL SHOOTERS ARE COWARDS. They don't want a fair fight.
Hihn is like that kid that everybody knew growing up who would try to change the rules whenever he was losing, and then, if that didn't work, he would start crying, take his ball home, and then tell his mom that the "mean" kids were bullying him by not letting him win. If only he'd pick up his ball and go run home.
Go home crybaby Hihn. Stop bullying people with your incessant whining and ridiculous overuse of bold.
There was never a "semi-automatic" ban.
There was a poorly designed "assault weapon" ban. There still is an automatic weapon near-ban.
Semi-automatic weapons, as a class, will not be banned, because that is every pistol that is not a revolver, and every rifle that is no bolt action or lever action. That ridiculous assertion of yours is flatly false.
Go away Hihntard. Your fact-free existence is not welcome.
Dumbfuck Hihnsano hates this part of Scalia's ruling, because he's too much of a dumbfuck to read past page 1:
3. The handgun ban and trigger lock requirement (as applied to self-defense) violate the Second Amendment.
Dumbfuck Hihnsano owned like Kunta Kinte again!
A hunting rifle is much more powerful than an assault rifle.
There, what do I win?
Actually we have an opoid epidemic. FYI, heroin is an opoid. And because the DEA has been cracking down on "over" prescription of prescribed opoids, adicts have been using heroin. In fact heroin use has surpassed prescription medication.
We don't rank first in intentional homicides either--we don't rank anywhere near as high as 8th--but that doesn't stop you from going all hihnny about it.
Dumbfuck Hihnsano hates this part of Scalia's ruling, because he's too much of a dumbfuck to read past page 1:

Well, when Hihn sees a gun, he soils himself.

Ergo, guns violate his happiness.

6.2% is an epidemic. If 6.2% of the population has a medical diaprde, any epidimologist would label it an epidemic. However, I do question your source. It is a for profit addiction treatment center. Many of the numbers cited come from questionable sources, e.g. The Richest, or outright advocates groups. And just because we have have the rate of Iran doesn't mean we don't have an epidimic. However, that doesn't mean outlawing it is the right way to treat the epidimic. In fact, even if heroin hasn't surpassed pain pills, heroin deaths have greatly increased as we have choked down on the supply of prescription medications. This would in fact show that government interference makes the situation worse rather then better.
However, trying to logically debate with someone who feels the need to insult someone who disagrees with them, is futile. So, have a good day. And you can (mistakingly) feel smug in the misguided idea that you somehow showed me.
Well that's only because it contradicts his point about Scalia saying " the sorts of weapons protected were those 'in common use at the time".
And he's not a good sport when the words he's quoting can be used to refute the point he's making.
But who is, really?
Without life there are NO rights.
Therefore the right to life has primacy.

WHY does it? YOU hate the reason!
BECAUSE handguns were in common use during the 1800s, taken by citizens to militia duty ...
Dumbfuck Hihnsano pretends he hasn't been calling for a handgun ban for a week now and Scalia owned his dumbfuck crybaby ass.
LIMITED by the militia clause to the modern equivalent of flintlocks and single-shot pistols ... ... for rifles, the equivalent of today's hunting rifles
Dumbfuck Hihnsano sputters incoherently as he tries to salvage his dumbfuck narrative.
Dumbfuck Hihnsano called for a handgun ban here
When the Second Amendment was written it was A) not the 1800s, and B) handguns were not in wide usage.
But thanks for playing.
Azathoth and Red Rocks say handguns were NOT in common use at our founding!
Dumbfuck Hihnsano pulls shit out of his ass to disguise his desperation for a handgun ban.
3. The handgun ban and trigger lock requirement (as applied to self-defense) violate the Second Amendment.
He's also too much of a dumbfuck to explain which rights are in conflict and how they specifically conflict when it comes to firearms.

Dumbfuck Hihnsano has no idea how gun ownership conflicts with the right to life.
