We will see how the court cases pan out. Considering that the UN workforce is a bit under 40,000 people, 3,300 child molesters is a large number.

The over a decade bit makes a larger number a bit more plausible, but that number gives me pause too. It seems like a number decided upon for shock value rather than truthfullness.

I had some of the same thoughts. So I asked google.... how many cases in the US each year?

The first result was a reason article questioning the utility of the sex offender registry. So you wonder where I get my skepticism....

Anyway, the second hit was this from NSOPW. They list about 63k reported cases for the US in 2012.

So that is a close match for the UN's decade-long work. So my back-of-the-envelope numbers show the UN is outproducing expectations by a few orders of magnitude.

But then I saw this stat further down in the article:

Research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that approximately 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18

As little as I like the UN, I wonder what definitions are being used. Do I believe that UN parasites are capable of scummy behavior. I would not be much surprised to discover than refugee women and girls (and boys too, though in some parts of the world that would be kinda risky) get coerced into sex-for-aid. But so much utter bullsh*t has been printed about 'harrassment' and 'rape' recently that I'm leery of joining in on the outrage binge.

Given that in the US college students are still considered children, I have to question what numbers and definitions they're using. Sure, engaging a 14-year old prostitute in a sex-for-food deal is pretty damn reprehensible behavior for an aid worker who's supposed to be there helping people so that they don't have to turn to prostitution to survive, but it's not like there aren't a lot of teen-age prostitutes in third-world countries. It's almost as if some of those countries are shitholes where your options are extremely limited and you gotta do what you gotta do to get by. This behavior by UN personnel maybe isn't making the situation any better - which is their stated mission - but lying and cheating and fucking people over is about par for the course for government work.
