Whenever he used the word 'immigrant' it was always in a negative connotation. Whenever he pointed out the positive things that a person had done, he did not use the word 'immigrant' even if it applied.

I think this is a feature of the discourse on the right generally when it comes to immigration. The word itself has come to mean a burden we must endure.
