A California bill would ban restaurants from giving straws to customers unless they specifically ask for one. The bill's sponsor explained, "We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans."

Of course this is of no consequence to Sacramento, who is shielded from equal application of the law - nobody from the government will show up at campaign fundraisers to take their contributions from them because they [gasp] used straws at the table.
