Hello.
What the....
Rufus hasn't been this lost since the Great Hockey Strike of '04.
And MLB strike of 1994.
EXPOS FOREVER!
What are expos?
This week has been a hot, undisciplined mess.
No shit. Even though we're libertarians we're CREATURES OF HABIT and Reason doesn't respect this.
/waves fist.
I'm this close to blogging about it.
President Donald Trump sarcastically tweets about global warming and the cold weather in the northeast, and that becomes news.
He's officially nailed his list to the door of the AGW church.
Which flavor of reformation shall we get from Trump? Lutheranism or Calvinism? Can the immigrant's soul be saved via proper action, or is he predetermined to go to hell simply for not being American? The Trumpist might opine that the answer is based upon his wealth and/or attractiveness.
I have regained interest in this question. Jesus said that Judas was both necessary for the fulfillment of the prophecy and guilty of grave sin for his actions.
So yes, God knows that you will suck, but it is still on you.
In reality, package delivery is what's keeping the United States Postal Service afloat at all and it's what subsidizes postal delivery to less populated places.
We'd be able to deliver to the moon if only Amazon would pay its fair share.
Jet neutrality?
My letter writing campaign finally paid off.
Jesus.
What's with all the revivals? Are they that hard up for ideas? And
Speaking of...I didn't even realize Paul Riser was the scientist dude in season 2 of Stranger Things.
"Hi, I'm Eric, and I'm an anti-Reiserite dirtbag."
There is no place for your kind on the Reason blogs, sir! NO PLACE!
Would it help if I told you that I still find Helen Hunt attractivish?
Let's let our fellow commenters decide.
That's not fair! I was thinking of The Sessions. Good stuff.
To each their own, man. If there is anything I don't do it's negatively judge someone for making it known that they are attracted to Helen Hunt.
I've always found Bonnie Hunt strangely attractive. And Joan Cusack.
It's the accent.
Also, Joan Cusack in the first few episodes of Shameless really got me going.
She had a real good year as the head coach at Miami.
Worse, Eric didn't even recognize a loving Aliens homage when he saw one. Game over, man.
Hell no. The series finale was an abomination and I will never forgive them.
Meanwhile my initial take on will and grace 2.0 is that it is only 1.1. Tedious rehash of lame gay political jokes.
@pixelatedboat
So. I go to a store specializing in Italian food and couldn't find a prepared b?chamel sauce.I tackled a worker and 'axed' (is that racist for wypippo to write that?) the lady 'O, where the fuck is the b?chamel?" and she was like all, well we had to pull them off the shelves because the language inspector showed up and the label is only in Italian. How many do you need? I have to go get them in the back.'
Looks like ole Rufus will have to do without it. Unless I can find it elsewhere.
And there you have how a ridiculous bureaucratic language laws keep Quebec the little parochial 'geographic expression' that it is. That and the obscene disproportionate power the unions hold here - but I digress.
Bechamel sauce is sooo easy to make, though. Get it together, Rufus!
Not using your excess capital to make others do simple tasks for you? Some "libertarian" you are.
Self-reliance, son. Look it up. Also, knowing how to cook is awesome.
True fact: my wife married me at least in part because of my beef curry, and that wasn't intended to be a euphemism even though it could be.
I used to cook. But gave up on it, because I'm dieting and the easiest way for me to do that is just eating embarrassingly straightforward things. Soon, I can return to cooking and then I will make my future wife a fine Chile Verde.
The Drexel University professor who famously tweeted last December "All I want for Christmas is White Genocide," (which he insisted was a joke) has resigned.
TOOK HIM LONG ENOUGH.
That tweet could just as easily refer to genocide by whites as opposed to genocide of whites.
The real problem is that he mixed up "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth" with "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas". Google is there to be used.
I thought that's what everyone was up in arms about.
This is more evidence that right-wing snowflakes are a much bigger threat to free speech than the left is. Especially when you realize "white genocide" is a dumb catchphrase used by alt-right white nationalists that just means "immigration to the US and Europe."
Scott's post makes white genocide look more like emigration to Egypt. That's a lesson the Brits learnt the hard way. But I'm still in favor of letting missionaries flock there... Abortion has been illegal in Egypt since Heinrich Himmler barred Jews from having guns. What harm can they do?
Are you just a bot that spouts non sequiturs?
Re: whoever you are,
That doesn't make sense. It's not "right-wing snowflakes" who overwhelmingly populate acadenia or college student rolls.
That pathetic excuse for an academic did not waste a single chance to say the most boring, derivative and idiotic Marxian pap, it's a wonder his own friends didn't get tired of him by now.
Hours after he accused the Chinese of secretly shipping oil to North Korea, Mr. Trump explicitly said for the first time that he has "been soft" on China on trade in the hopes that its leaders will pressure North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
He hinted that his patience may soon end, however, signaling his frustration with the reported oil shipments.
"Oil is going into North Korea. That wasn't my deal!" he exclaimed, raising the possibility of aggressive trade actions against China. "If they don't help us with North Korea, then I do what I've always said I want to do."
Despite saying that when he visited China in November, President Xi Jinping "treated me better than anybody's ever been treated in the history of China," Mr. Trump said that "they have to help us much more."
Literally anybody ever.
Literally worst formatting ever.
He also thinks the reason the United States Postal Service is losing money is because it's not charging Amazon (and therefore his enemy Jeff Bezos) enough for delivering packages. In reality, package delivery is what's keeping the United States Postal Service afloat at all and it's what subsidizes postal delivery to less populated places.
Those don't contradict each other. Just because you're making a profit on a sale doesn't mean you aren't charging too little.
This article claims that the USPS is mis-allocating its fixed expenses. There certainly is wiggle room in how to account for this. It's not unreasonable to claim that the USPS could be subsidizing amazon. But then again reason is infected with full-on Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Oops!

Yes and no.
USPS has fixed costs that are tied to its mandate to deliver first class mail to every residence.
This analysis seems to be based on total volume, not the need for delivery to every address.
The real question is what does USPS charge to deliver a package in comparison to UPS. In my personal experience, UPS is often the better choice.
The fact that USPS has a bunch of other fixed costs that they can't or won't shift to amazon is irrelevant.
Whenever I buy from Amazon, I hope they deliver via UPS or Amazon Logistics and not USPS.
USPS seems to be the worst available delivery option with poor on-time delivery and inferior tracking.
I assume that Amazon agrees with me, since they seem to be using USPS less and less. Or maybe USPS just charges too much to compete with UPS.
I complained to amazon a few times and they set up my account so that it never uses Smartpost.
Win!
This may be true, but in which case I refer to this quote from Andrew Carnegie; "Watch the costs, the profits will take care of themselves".
Well, Trump will be a big poopyhead NEXT year!
"Charity gets jolt from tax law, but donations due to drop next year"

It's the best treatment.
In reality, package delivery is what's keeping the United States Postal Service afloat at all and it's what subsidizes postal delivery to less populated places.
Why, just last night, the USPS delivered a package to my house that should have gone to one of my neighbors. Peak efficiency!
Maybe if they charged more, they would be able to check to make sure they're delivering to the right place.
Just like if we let cops take more in asset forfeiture, I'm sure they would have sufficient funding to avoid ventilating dogs and no-knock raiding the wrong address.
I figured it was a nanny-state attempt to force me to socialize with neighbors against my will.

But enough about my wife.
getting married was the dumbest thing I ever did in my life
That thought has crossed my mind a time or two too.

Trump gets his climate data from NOAA, but via untampered graphs prepared by electrical engineer Tony Heller at realclimatescience.com State Science Institute personnel have been on the Democratic party payroll for 8 years. They know that unvarnished temperature data shows a cooling trend in the USA over the past century. But The Party says temperatures are increasing--since the freon ban--so they fudge the data. Older data is made cooler and newer data warmer so their Ministry of Truth graphs slope upwards. Access to energy in platform planks, by the way, is why the LP and GOP together got exactly half the popular vote. Populist pseudoscience cost the Dems all those paychecks and political appointments. Prohibition pseudoscience, however, says they can still join the GO-Pee in forcing people to piss in a Dixie cup or be fired.
the GO-Pee
The ball is in your court, Mikey.
In all fairness the comment was directly linked to piss in a cup, making this a silly pun rather than a terrible nickname.
Yeah. You can't just throw Simple Mikey comparisons around all willy-nilly, Crusty. Jesus.
Dammit.
It's a serious allegation. You can't just shake that label once applied.
You are a gem! Can I hire you to play the curmudgeonly uncle at my family's next Thanksgiving?
If you feed him he'll never leave.
So he's like your mom?

Hog House Tender is an awesome college nickname, but out of an excess of seasonal bonhomie i will allow someone else to claim it.
On the Postal Monopoly... if you look backwards, you'll notice companies like UPS and FedEx organized when Quaker prez Herbert Clark Hoover pressured the Postmaster to have more narcs snooping through parcel post under the Comstock Law of 1873... and the Harrison Act. If the Dems had put LEGALIZE PLANT LEAVES instead of banning energy in its platform, the postal monopoly might be less of a leech on producers... Oh, and those election results...
Apparently The Atlantic thinks segregation gets a bad rap sometimes.

President Donald Trump sarcastically tweets about global warming and the cold weather in the Northeast, and that becomes news.
Hey, that's my schtick mister president. But because I'm such a nice guy, I'll let you borrow it.
Not just the northeast either: International Falls, Minnesota (aka "the icebox of America") hit 37 degrees below zero the other day. And that was the real temperature, not the "this is what it feels like" temperature.
These days, I like to picture Al Gore buried under a six foot snowdrift in Erie, Pennsylvania. How's that global warming working out for you these days, fatso?
I gotta hand it to you, Double Dummy. You're certainly looking to end 2017 on a dumb note.
I don't think you can claim something as your "schtick" if everybody's goofy uncle has said the same thing at every Thanksgiving since 1996.
There is a fundamental misunderstanding between the left and the right on the purpose of leadership. On the left, the primary purpose of the president is to set the national tone, start a national conversation, be an example, etc. This is why Donald Trump's tweets, to them, are not a distraction from the real issues. In the left's mind, what Donald Trumps says in the media, in his tweets, etc. is the main event.
People on the right see those on the left waving Donald Trump's silly tweets in the air, and they take it even less seriously than Donald Trump's tweets. They assume the left must be kidding. They're not kidding.
In response to a mass shooting in a church, it seemed that a perfectly proportionate and direct response was to take down the confederate flag from over the state capitol. To people on the right, this seems like an diversion. What does the confederate flag have to do with a mass shooting? They don't seem to understand that to people on the left, one of the worst aspects of a mass shooting is "the message" it sends. They can't let people think that racists shootings are okay!
It's the same thing with those on the left and Trump's tweets.
You embarrass yourself with your tribal defense of atrocious behavior. I bet you never jumped to Obama's defense when he was causing a scandal by putting his feet on the Resolute desk or whatever. You're just a vacuum of thought, aimlessly bouncing around defending anything with an (R) after it.
Which makes you horrible at psychoanalyzing people who think differently from you. Let me help you out: liberals are fully aware of the damage Trump's policies are doing and are capable of being alarmed by those and his obvious severe psychological ailments at the same time.
There was a judge who ruled against Trump's revision of the travel ban, not because of what was in the text of the order itself but because of things Trump had said during his campaign. The left can't even perceive of Trump's decisions, policies, or actions without taking into account the message it sends--and that is why they're so obsessed with the messages he sends via Twitter.
This is the great divide between left and right today. Signaling isn't a distraction on the left--it's the whole ballgame. Neither Hilary nor Obama could have collaborated with Putin to defeat ISIS in Syria--because of the message it would send. They cared more about those messages they send to the American public and the world than they did about defeating ISIS. Why, Putin is hostile to gay marriage and the rights of LGBTQI+. Until he gets on the right side of history, American security interests will just have to wait.
This kind of thinking is so foreign to my thinking, it's hard for me to take it seriously--just like it's hard to understand why people in the media are so obsessed with Trump's tweets.
But it isn't a distraction to them. They genuinely care about this stuff!
It's like the left values words over actions, and the right values actions over words. Is that the jist of what you're saying?
Yes. But we need to remember that the right doesn't always value the correct actions.
Does anyone?
Anyone with political power? No.
The left doesn't even value words, they just value appearance over substance.
feelz
"It's like the left values words over actions, and the right values actions over words. Is that the jist of what you're saying?
This goes back to Marxism, Situationist International stuff, media theory, etc.--but I'm not talking about the intellectual side so much as how various minds work and what makes certain things attractive.
And I'm not talking about true and fast rules that are the same for each individual on the left either. I'm talking about trends.
Where the general idea on the right would say that opposing Obama's candidacy isn't racist just because he's black, the left might say it is--and they really mean it.
To them, the message voting for a black president sent was far more important than whatever silly issue you're concerned about--and not feeling that way is part of what they're talking about when they're calling people racist for not supporting Obama's candidacy.
In their minds, when you say, "I oppose nationalizing GM, the Obama Justice Department raiding state legal medical marijuana clinics hundreds of times during his first term, and also point out how the cash for clunkers program hurts the working poor, all they hear is, "Herp a derp, DEMAN KURV!, I'm a racist because I care about something more than sending a message to racists".
I know it's really hard to do, but if you take the progressives' views as if they were serious for a moment, it starts to make sense. We keep arguing about policy and the impacts it will have on our lives. They're not talking about that. They're talking about the message that's being sent out into the larger society, and that is genuinely more important to them than those mysterious policy impacts that haven't even happened yet, so how can you know?
ObamaCare will actually raise costs and premiums. Who knew?!
Well, everyone on this site but Tony knew--because that's the way we think.
The future and what makes economies work and grow is a mystery to people on the left. What they know and care about is that there are racists in this country, Obama is black, and you won't vote for him. What kind of message does that send, sarcasmic?
Have you seen Trump's tweets?
Well HAVE YOU?!
What kind of irresponsible message is he sending!!!
That's the way their minds work.
"We keep arguing about policy and the impacts it will have on our lives. They're not talking about that. They're talking about the message that's being sent out into the larger society"
To be clear, this is the way they see us as well.
You'll hear them say, "I don't understand why Republicans vote against their own interests" as if soaking the rich had no negative consequences to anyone else in the real world.
Lying underneath their argument is the assumption that Republican laypeople only make the arguments they do because of the message they're trying to send to the wider culture, as well.
They think your rational arguments are a distraction from the real issue, which is the message they want the president to send to America and the world. Economics, logic, these are just distractions. The fact is that Trump is sending the wrong message--and why can't you stubborn people see that?
It's right there in his tweets!
That's why his tweets are so freaking important!!!
Sadly I think I understand what you are saying.
It goes back to what I have been saying for a long time. Progressives are governed by emotion. It's all about the feelz. Stupid shit like right and wrong, economics, justice, and so on are mere distractions because those are things that involve thinking.
Suspend the thinking part of the brain, rely purely on emotion, and you will understand the ways of the leftist.
That's basically it.
Just realize, they aren't being dishonest as we usually think of it.
They're being intellectually dishonest--mostly by way of ignorance. But they really mean what they're saying.
It took me a long time to understand that they really believe the stupid shit they say. They're not trolling. They're not being deceitful. The shit they say may be unbelievably ignorant, but it's really what they think.
They cannot see past Trump's tweets--and a big part of that it is because in their minds, there's nothing else to look at. Policies and consequences are way too much for them to handle.
They talk about that stuff, but it's like people gossiping about Game of Thrones, which characters they like and which ones they don't. None of that stuff is real to them.
"The boy is Ignorance, the girl is Want. Of the two, beware the boy most of all because I see written upon his brow that which is Doom."
Ban scary looking rifles.
Better to see them going after the state flag than the Second Amendment, that's for sure.
Trump's lack of filter is refreshing in my opinion. It strips national politics of any pretense of dignity.
The way I see it, both major candidates were (are) awful people. Just one knew how to shut up and act "statesmanlike", and the other one said whatever he wanted.
I do agree with Ken. Much of the butthurt about Trump is about what he says, not what he does.
He doesn't take his own tweets anywhere near as seriously journalists do.
And he's been manipulating tabloid headlines since the 1980's. He's a master at it.
Must be why his first-year poll numbers are the worst in the history of polling. He's just so great at what he does.
Stop watching FOX News and, after a time of shame and embarrassment, you'll come to figure it out.
What the fuck do multiple court rulings have to do with "the left"?
At least 12 have been killed in Islamic State attacks on Coptic Christians south of Cairo in Egypt.
The genocide that none dare speak about.
The media hates genocides where everyone's the same color. It's so non-telegenic!
Making America Grating Again, one ignorant tweet at a time. El Presidente Trumpo is actually way ahead of that game, which brings to mind a frightening image of what his inanity diarrhea is going to look like.
Is going to look like in 2018
He also thinks the reason the United States Postal Service is losing money is because it's not charging Amazon (and therefore his enemy Jeff Bezos) enough for delivering packages. In reality, package delivery is what's keeping the United States Postal Service afloat at all and it's what subsidizes postal delivery to less populated places.
Ha... "delivery". By that you mean the USPS places the package somewhere in the neighborhood (hopefully on the right block) then the residents hand-carry to the actual recipient?
Hey, it's the last vestige of real human community left in today's walled-in overly-digital life!
The Drexel professor ought to get a T-shirt that reads:
"I wished for genocide and all I got was unemployment!"
I really thought W. was going to be the dumbest president ever.
I also thought "it's cold where I am today, thus global warming is a hoax" at least was too fucking idiotic to still be lingering around, so what do I know.
You always see things like 'there were more record high days than there were record cold days."
And this may be true--but those 'record highs' are fractions of a degree usually, while the 'record lows' are usually several and sometimes tens of degrees--why, that record snowfall in Erie, was over a yard greater than the previous records.
And then the new baseline gets ignored the next year to be met with the same 'there were more record high days than there were record cold days." line again--even though the cold record we're starting from is orders of magnitude lower than it was last year.
Erie /= the planet Earth.
Though I did eat at a fantastic diner there once.
I'm pretty sure that the government does subsidize Amazon's packages (and in general all), there was a WSJ story about it (which presumably he read)
But hey, go ahead and defend government subsidies
