Newsweek article claims (among other ridiculous things) that in Seattle, a city of roughly 704,352 people, some 648,7000 people solicit prostitution every day.

I want to get out ahead of this. The huge jump that happened to coincide with me moving to the area this June is purely coincidence.

Yeah. I don't know if Newsweek corrected a typo after it was posted here. Or if ENB just misread that number seriously.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Oh, I get it. It says 6487 people solicited on just one of 100 websites. So ENB extrapolated that to mean on average that gets us 648,700. I then assume the final zero is a typo on Reason.

That's definitely a weasel phrasing from Newsweek. But what ENB said is also an inappropriate reading of what Newsweek said.

In one 24-hour-period in Seattle, an estimated 6,487 people solicited sex on just one of the more than 100 websites that connect buyers with sellers, according to a 2014 study.

Maybe 6k page views? No chance that a local website sells 6k sex acts each day. That might rival the number of burgers McDonald's sells.

        3. chemjeff   8 years ago

Okay, yeah, that is bullshit. Newsweek isn't saying that 648,700 Seattlites are looking for hookers.

          1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Yes, though the rest of the article makes me shake my head as well. I get embarrassed seeing some of the things guys say, and there's always a little bit more sadness on average when it's nerds saying it.

The article is basically though, people are gross, they're gross to women, to save those women we have to kill the women if they choose to be a part of it.

            1. Rhywun   8 years ago

they choose to be a part of it

              "Choose"!

I got the impression from skimming the article that women don't choose this work, they are trafficked into it.

That policy will undoubtedly prove popular with many New Yorkers who have complained that the bikes, which look and handle just like regular bicycles but can reach speeds of 20 mph or more, are often operated recklessly. Lots of people have stories about close calls where they stepped out into the street, only to nearly be hit by a quick-moving bike they couldn't hear coming.

uhhhh..... bicycles routinely hit 20 mph without electric assistance. And it seems to me that New Yorkers have been complaining about bike delivery guys since the 70's.

    1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

East Africans can regularly reach speeds of 20 mph or more. Lots of people have stories about close calls where they stepped out into the street, only to nearly be hit by a quick-moving Ethiopian they couldn't hear coming.

      1. Episteme   8 years ago

That's why Philadelphia law requires Joel Embiid to excitedly troll everyone as he runs by at high speed. It prevents death-by-Cameroonian.

    2. Rhywun   8 years ago

I think 20MPH is on the high end espically in city traffic. Anyway I see these things all the time and they are routinely faster than regular bikes. Not by much, to be fair.

But yeah the real issue isn't the speed, it's that the riders often pay zero attention to anything around them and that hasn't changed regardless of what's powering the thing or whether it's a delivery guy or not.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

And my point is that this seems better handled by enforcing traffic laws rather than outright bans.

I hate cyclists, don't get me wrong, but this is definitely overreach. It also has a distinct whiff of classism, targetting those who uses bikes as a primary means of conveyance.

        1. Ron   8 years ago

More then likely the ban was instigated by an extremest bicyclist who thinks cars should be banned and everyone should have to peddle for their own health and electric bikes are cheating. there are those of that ilk in my town

          1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Yes, many people use pedal only bikes for transportation, but a huge amount are cyclist health nut jackasses. Electric bikes are basically only used by the poors trying to get through their day.

          2. Robert   8 years ago

No, the ban was just an oversight that became entrenched. E-bikes fell into a crack in a regulatory scheme of vehicles in which everything that isn't explicitly allowed is outlawed. When it came time to make a category to allow them, either as exempt from registr'n or a class of registr'n, anti-bike sentiment stopped it.

      2. Last of the Shitlords   8 years ago

A fit cyclist with a good bike that is efficiently geared can go much faster than 20 mph. My bike is a performance oriented street model, and i can get up around 25 mph on a flat street without too much difficulty for at least a short period, and I'm not in the kind of shape these couriers and delivery people are.

  17. C. S. P. Schofield   8 years ago

    Let's see....

Adolescents are still playing 'show me yours. I'll show you mine', let's all panic, apply stupid laws to the 'problem' and make things inexpressibly worse!

I didn't even have the beginnings of an opinion on electric bikes before this, but if De Blasio is against them they should probably be mandatory. What a pollock.

Newsweek is full of dung. In other news, water found to be wet.

British politicians are making bulldog noises about the Russians, the way they've been doing off and on for hundreds of years...every time they needed to distract the public from a policy problem they could do something about but don't want to.

Vice cops tend to end up partaking. Ho hum. Somebody recently wrung hands over the possibility that we were returning to a Victorian Prudishness. You know; when the cops knew where all the best brothels were so the when a man's daughters started wondering where he was the cops could find him, and a lot of cops ended up happily married to 'working girls'. Read Mencken.

Housing Policy; housing choice entered into voluntarily are having effects somebody disapproves of...let's all run in circles and wave our hands in the air!

    1. Last of the Shitlords   8 years ago

If we just went back to McCarthyism, people like DeBlasio would be gone.

  18. Marty Feldman's Eyes   8 years ago

Housing policy is costing us friendships.

"Friends who lived within striking distance of each other found that? scheduling opportunities to spend or share some time together was essential," Rawlins writes. "Several mentioned, however, that these occasions often were talked about more than they were accomplished."

OFFS, someone had to do a study to discover that "let's do lunch" means you are never having lunch together, and quite possibly they never want to see you again.

    1. Rhywun   8 years ago

Oh wow that article - now that I'm reading it - is all kinds of BS.

In practice, baugruppen are basically like condos, but with much more robust shared spaces and collective ownership rather than developer ownership.

I think the words they're looking for are "public housing". I wonder how that worked out.

New York City's High Line, the kind of noncommercial public space to which too few Americans have regular access.

And adjacent to literally the most expensive housing in the United States. Let's duplicate that.

Agh... I can't take any more. The annoying thing is that in the rare instances where I agree with them it's written so pretentiously that I want to slap them silly. I live in the kind of neighborhood that would give them a wet dream. That most certainly does not mean I want "communal spaces" or other such BS. I don't know my neighbors and I don't want to, like any sane person.

      1. Sevo   8 years ago

"I think the words they're looking for are "public housing". I wonder how that worked out"

The annoying thing is that in the rare instances where I agree with them

I don't know my neighbors and I don't want to, like any sane person.

Thing is, I sort of agree with one of the basic premises- that it's difficult to make friendships in adulthood. My wife and I moved to a new city in our late 30s, and it's been a fuckton more difficult than in our 20s.. But the people I've ended up hanging out with the most are former neighbors actually.

But I think it's a social norms thing, not a design thing.

        1. Rhywun   8 years ago

I was being snarky TBH but I always thought the burbs are where you go if you want your neighbors to be in your business all the time. City people ignore each other because it's the best way to get along in close quarters.

But I think it's a social norms thing, not a design thing.

Absolutely. I like city living for reasons that have nothing to do with all the claims that the author is attributing to it.

In response to Trump's attempts to suspend refugee resettlement, Justin Trudeau wrote the following tweet back in January:

To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada

    12:20 PM - Jan 28, 2017

The tweet was shared all over the world, and, since then, some 18,000 refugees have flooded across the border into Canada.

Trudeau recently doubled down by responding to questions about how Canada will deal with ISIS fighters returning to Canada (hundreds are known to have joined ISIS from Canada).

"There's a range of experiences when people come home. We know that actually someone who has engaged and turned away from that hateful ideology can be an extraordinarily powerful voice for preventing radicalization in future generations and younger people within the community"

    ----Justin Trudeau, CTV

    https://tinyurl.com/y8u2563h

So, I guess they should encourage ISIS fighters to come home? If, you know, they've turned their back on hate and promise to become social workers against jihadi ideologies or something?

Justin Trudeau makes pacifism look far dumber than it needs to be. I guess his appeal is as the opposite of Trump and ugly Americans everywhere? Can someone offer a better explanation?

Trudeau is the first PM in history to break ethics laws and was eviscerated by the Auditor General for his behaviour. Worse, his excuse was so weak and unbelievably unprofessional he oozes self-entitlement.

Little twerp is all he is.

      1. Ken Shultz   8 years ago

The excuse you're talking about, that's the one about how the guy who paid for his vacations is a friend of the family--that he hasn't met in 30 years?

Honestly, I think the people of Canada were just bored with Harper.

Also, they didn't like Americans having a more liberal president than theirs. Trudeau was supposed to be more liberal than Hillary--now being the anti-Trump is even better.

"ugly American" isn't just just a statement on any particular person's looks.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Ugly_American_(pejorative)

I was saying that Trudeau may be popular in Canada because he's the opposite of everything Canadians love to hate about Americans.

If he's doing the opposite of what Donald Trump would do, it makes him seem smart in Canadian swing voters' eyes--even though it's stupid.

Because Donald Trump was trying to limit refugees from certain predominately Muslim countries, Trudeau welcomed them--even though it may have presented a security threat to Canada, who cares? The important thing is that it was the opposite of Donald Trump, the "ugly American".

No matter how stupid it might seem to welcome ISIS fighters into mosques to work with kids who may become potential jihadis, somehow that seems smart to certain Canadians--because it's the opposite of what Trump, the "ugly American" would do.

They hate us for supposedly being unsophisticated.

They hate us for electing Donald Trump.

They hate us, they'll do the stupidest things imaginable--just to do the opposite of what we did.

If Trump told them not to shove baseball bats up their own asses, there'd be a run on baseball bats in Canada tomorrow.

Because murder squads are what Bond villains have. Part of their standard ensemble.

      after an officer-involved shooting

After reading about the circumstances, I see why they used this phrase. I mean, bullets definitely went into the car, and someone died, but hey, if you weren't there you can't say his weapon didn't just suddenly jumps out of its holster and starts firing.

Minneapolis Police Remove Memorial Left by Hate Group

"We cannot allow any memorial and anything like that to be put up at that location," Elder told the radio station.

The northern California hate group called Identify Evropa said on its Twitter account it put up the memorial Friday. The group helped organize participants in the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August.

The memorial to Justine Ruszczyk Damond consisted of a framed portrait, candles, roses and signs reading "United We Stand." The Star Tribune reported that only the extinguished candles remained Saturday night.

Fun fact: the hate group is not the police union.

OT: I saw The Last Jedi this weekend

And it was a 2.5 hour abortion of everything Star Wars. **spoiler alert** Supreme Leader Snoke is a throw away character who dies in the most cliched way possible: in the middle of giving a speech about how powerful and unbeatable he is. Leia apparently can breathe in space and has practiced the force enough to draw herself back to a ship after being blow out of the bridge. Yes, that really happened. Also, apparently one can "drop" bombs in space as happened in the opening sequence. And there's a spectacular amount of "diversity" of people who can't act for shit. And there's literally a purple-haired feminazi who dresses down the best pilot in the resistance fleet like he's a little insignificant man-child because Gurl Power. Chewy can't eat because sad bird faces. Some dumb, sjw asian b*tch chastises us about income equality and how rich people are bad because they're rich. And this asian b*tch denies Finn his one chance to do something to redeem his useless character and to have the group face some actual adversity/loss because her entire philosophy warfare is fucked.

    1. Rebel Scum   8 years ago

Rey is still an expert at everything with no explanation or training. And she is apparently a nobody who came from nowhere because why the f*ck would we actually tie this series to the broader SW universe to create a decent story. Nothing of value was accomplished in TFA because the resistance is still losing and for some reason the first order is retardedly powerful and well equpped even tho they stem from the empire, which was defeated 30+ years ago. Speaking of, where the f*ck is the Republic's military??? No mention is made except how the resistance has to try to contact "allies" that are never named. Luke almost saves the film towards the end, but the writers couldn't have that. He force-projects himself on to a planet in the last battle, says some stuff, then dies like a bitch. And I'm gonna have to change my handle if I hear the "resistance" refer to themselves as "Rebel Scum" one more time. They seriously started doing that, wearing it as a snarky badge of honor. They are not the rebels. The rebels won. They are the Republic. And the Republic is full of panzies.

        *NERD ALERT NERD ALERT*

      2. Eidde   8 years ago

My expectations were lower than low, because I knew that I liked the original Star Wars and Empire because of my younger age, so even if they did the best star wars ever I'd still wonder why it wasn't as good as the originals.

My expectations were also lowered by the rut certain parts of Hollywood seem to be in, where originality is apparently Kryptonite to be carefully avoided.

So to my rock-bottom expectations I found the movie OK - I never wanted a plausible explanation of the space-magic, and I like how (SPOILERS) Luke finally decides to quit the Jedi when it seems all they accomplish is train up two supervillain dictators in the ways of the Force (one of the trainers being Luke himself).

Emo Vader was done well, given that he was emo Vader, that is.

The Force seems to have adopted a new populist policy which bypasses traditional Jedi expertise and training, but then, wouldn't that fit in with Luke's disillusionment with the Jedi? And (while I doubt this was the directorial intent) doesn't this fit in with Trump and the disillusionment at the "experts" who were supposed to make our lives to much better?

        1. Eidde   8 years ago

          *so* much better

          Is Yoda still alive?

I would make him an anti-PC Archie Bunker type character.

Why not? The whole franchise seems like a cess pool of derp anyway.

It's worth noted I never watched any of them after Return of the Jedi. The first three were more than enough. And when Ben-kebab died, it took a little piece with me. Also, whatever happened to the Jawas? They didn't get exterminated or was their population that small to have been exterminated by the Stormtroopers? And what was those meal-pills Luke was eating with his aunt and uncle before, you know, they were MURDERED?

          1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

      3. Kivlor   8 years ago

It was pretty terrible. But it was honestly better than I expected. Despite all of the retarded plot holes. Hopefully they'll actually try something innovative after making the theme literally "Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to. That's the only way to become what you were meant to be." Either they will innovate something interesting, or the next one can finally put to rest what we've all long known: SJWs belong no where near entertainment.

Some dumb, sjw asian b*tch chastises us about income equality and how rich people are bad because they're rich.
I thought the message here was much more ironic, because she goes on to be proven wrong--her own people wouldn't have weapons to fight with if it weren't for those rich people, as the thief points out, with proof.

dresses down the best pilot in the resistance fleet like he's a little insignificant man-child because Gurl Power.
I was more annoyed with Princess Retard "demoting" the only competent tactician in "The Resistance" because "you lost all of our bombers and any losses are unacceptable losses" even though his decision is the only reason the rest of the movie happens, and they don't all die 35 seconds after attempting to escape.

      4. DRM   8 years ago

Speaking of, where the f*ck is the Republic's military???

The New Republic disarmed itself; it didn't have a standing military in peacetime, beyond a relatively small force that was based in the capital. That's why Leia was out there leading her own private military ("the Resistance") back in TFA to guard against the First Order (out in the Unknown regions), not as part of the Republic; she opposed the disarmament. When the Republic's capital system was utterly wiped out by Starkiller Base in TFA, the Republic fleet guarding it was destroyed.

So, at the end of TFA, the military forces in the galaxy were the First Order, Leia's Resistance, and whatever forces individual star systems have.

Now, it's reasonable that if coordinated, the various system fleets could beat the First Order. But there is no central government to order them into action, because that was wiped out by Starkiller Base. The natural nucleus for an organized response to the First Order would be Leia's Resistance . . . and thus we reach the opening of TLJ. The First Order is trying to wipe out the Resistance before it can rally the galaxy against the First Order.

I am curious to see just how the hell the rebellion is going to win the war now that it looks like they're down to one ship and about a dozen rebels.

And yes, in this trilogy they've gone full speed ahead down the trite, worn-out, standard issue Hollywood "white men bad, everyone else good" PC road as they seem to be trying hard to check off every box in the official hierarchical list of victimhood.
