Quebec has this. My best workers sometimes are the ones who don't have one while the others get the chunk of wages (because government artificially pumps it up).

      Go figure.

      1. Citizen X - #6   7 years ago

Well, Quebec is the Western Hemisphere's paragon of righteous governance. It is known.

        1. Rufus The Monocled   7 years ago

Yet, not as bad (except for the fact the unions still hold power here) as California. In fact, Cal is a bad influence on Quebec. Every time a stupid law/proposal/bill based on faulty premise is tabled Cal is usually the source of the bad idea.

Such is the weight that state carries on the continent.

          1. BestUsedCarSales   7 years ago

That's not necessarily true. Not if the the crazy distribution is not normal.

What is true is 49% of people are crazier than median.

        2. colorblindkid   7 years ago

To be fair, he got less than 49% the votes Trump got. Hundreds of thousands refused to vote. That is an entirely valid option. 13% of Alabamans actually voted for Roy Moore.

          1. $park? leftist poser   7 years ago

There you go. The number of people who voted for Moore are safely beyond one deviation from the craziness norm.

"An Ohio bill banning abortion if the fetus has down syndrome now awaits Gov. John Kasich's signature."

Whatever your stance on abortion, I think it's safe to say that they haven't thought this one through.

    1. BestUsedCarSales   7 years ago

Previously it seemed that it was phrased that you couldn't have Down Syndrome be the reason for the abortion. That seemed like a relatively unoffensive bit of symbolism since you could just say any reason for the abortion.

This is a whole new silly thing and seems undefendable if abortion is allowed in general cases in the state.

      1. Philadelphia Collins   7 years ago

Eugenics never goes out of style.

      2. BYODB   7 years ago

Yeah, since it isn't explicitly a ban on aborting DS children period it seems purely symbolic.

"Why no, I'm not aborting this child because it's got DS! I'm doing it because I'm lazy and don't want to stop smoking for 9 months!"

        1. BYODB   7 years ago

That was supposed to read 'wasn't' rather than 'isn't' since it appears this bill IS an explicit ban.

Of course, that seems pretty fucked up since this is literally one of the pros for abortion in that you can just rid yourself of a defective child that was going to cost you shit tons of money over and above what a healthy non-defective child would cost.

It's not even eugenics, though, since even if you aborted every DS child the gene will still be carried forward. It can't be 'exterminated' as a matter of genetics.

I mean, once you've established that the basis for legal abortion is to give women a choice you can't then turn around and circumscribe that choice only in certain circumstances where you think it's 'icky' rather than some actual violation of natural rights.

At that point, your entire rational basis for having it in the first place is moot. I mean, are we trying to say that DS fetuses are more aware than non-DS fetuses at the same point in their development? Sheesh. Talk about 'anti-science feel good legislation'.
