I think there are some "ifs" on the horizon that weren't really issues in past technological leaps. It seems likely that most new jobs will require a lot more intelligence than in previous eras. This poses the obvious problem. Compound that with the acceleration of advancement in these fields--which supposedly doubles every 2 years. In a very short time, it won't just be the stupid who are facing elimination, it will be the average, and a little farther down the road it will be the intelligent, the genius, the unique. Maybe we'll hit a technological wall that prevents this. Maybe there will be a point of "computers can be made this good" but improvement beyond that is impossible/prohibitive.

The claim is that by 2050 there will be a supercomputer with the equivalent IQ of 10,000. By this point, the only thing left for humans may be some niche work in spatial reasoning--presuming we don't find a way for computers to learn that.

I'm more optimistic than some, I guess. More automation will make even low IQ workers more productive. That's what has happened throughout the past century and everyone is richer for it. Robots are complicated things that need experts to set them up and maintain them now. But the same was true of computers 40 years ago. Now every moron has several computers that they can operate in pretty sophisticated ways all on their own without having to know how they work.

If automation comes very quickly (which I hope it does as I work in the robotics industry), it might be difficult in the short term for some workers. But I don't think it's going to be a permanent problem.

Last time I actually saw a robot being repaired, a crew of five or six repairmen was huddled around it, just like a bunch of guys discussing how to fix a car or huddled around a road construction site.

There are a lot of blue collar problem solving skills that would be hard to automate. Anybody who has seen a contractor trying to figure out how to remodel bathroom has seen a certain type of know-how that high-tech folks don't always appreciate.

Finally, there's something telling about this article, predicting how modern everything is going to be, being a PHP link. It almost certainly means the Chronicle has a bunch of web server code that was written years ago by a programmer who is long gone, and have code maintenance problems up the wazoo.
