There's a lot of orange threatening that little r in the progress bar. Pretty good so far.
It's a metaphor for Trump threatening "R"eality.
Like all great art, it's open to interpretation. I see it as R. Kelly drowning in his own urine.
Way to keep it relevant ^_-
"That's my Robert, always peeing on people."
Hello.
Def Jam records co-founder Russell Simmons has resigned from his companies in the midst of sexual assault allegations.
Looks like this perp...
[dons sunglasses]
...definitely jammed something where he wasn't supposed to.
The mayor of Canton, New York, is in court after he "admitted to using Craigslist to pay a woman $300 for a sexual massage."
ALL MASSAGES ARE SEXUAL. (If done correctly.)
I love a story with a happy ending.
I can't believe I'm defending a politician, but assuming the woman received the money promised, what did this mayor do wrong? (Other than maybe overpay?)
Sometimes I swear the whole "adults behind closed doors" idea is lost on people. Either that, or there's been a time-slip and we are back to the Victorian Age.
The second thing.
there's been a time-slip and we are back to the Victorian Age.
Culture is cyclical. I don't know if we're there yet, but we're definitely on our way.
That's really where this is headed. Instead of being a New Glorious Dawn in sexual equality we are headed back to Victorian Era, but this time people can be shamed in front of the entire world instead of just their church congregation.
When you have a candidate for the Senate in Utah publicly portraying herself as a victim of sexual harassment because a colleague called her "pretty", and no one has the guts to say she is full of shit, then you know this will not end well.
That's really where this is headed. Instead of being a New Glorious Dawn in sexual equality we are headed back to Victorian Era, but this time people can be shamed in front of the entire world instead of just their church congregation.
Not just in front of the whole world but for explicitly who they are or what they did/didn't do too. No more of the old mortal soul, common decency mumbo-jumbo. You have a penis and you did penis-y things, shame on you.
Uh, this is a 'prostitute' thing, not a sexual mores thing.
Yeah, I think this is orthogonal to the rape scare that's going on right now. That being said, unlike the rape stuff, I don't actually care about prostitutes out prostituting and Johns out Johning.

Well, that sure went sideways.

Academic criminologists aren't happy about the FBI withholding certain crime data.
ENB can't link to Reason's own story on this. Not enough donations yet.
Sen. Tom Cotton is reportedly also on President's Trumps shortlist for the position.
I'm not sure I cotton to this choice.
It's 2017, nobody's going to MAKE anybody pick Cotton.
This sounds ginned up to me.
They don't have the balls!
You people have to italicize your pun words or these idiots won't get it.

a number of what we would call anarchist-extremist investigations
Huh. I didn't realize Republicans were so heavily represented in Antifa.
Academic criminologists aren't happy about the FBI withholding certain crime data.
Certain data such as, apparently, a new definition of "anarchist" that includes socialists.
Seems close to self-contradictory to me too, but there have been socialist anarchists as long as there have been socialists and anarchists. Which is a shame because the bomb-throwing nutjob anarchists tend to be of the collectivist variety, giving the rest of us a bad name.
I've never been able to get my head around collectivist anarchism. You're against the State, so you're going to tear it down and replace it with a social structure that coercively subsumes individuals into the pursuit of collective goals... and that is not also a state how?
I believe the reason bomb-throwers are bomb-throwers is just because they want to blow shit up. I have serious doubts that their thought processes on anything go beyond how to blow shit up and what shit to blow up. I'd bet that the ones who target the government only do so because it's the biggest target.
Most likely. Plain old psychopathy is the root cause, any ideological/religious/whatever justification is a post facto attempt to rationalize it.
Yeah, that's probably true for most of the actual bomb throwers, anyway.
Well, I think that the idea is that they are also against the hierarchical power structures that exist in private business and industry. Which sort of makes sense. But their ideas about how a world could function without that don't unless you assume that big changes to human nature are possible, or use lots of coercion, in which case you can't really call it anarchism.
Well, yes, and this is because anarchists are too stupid to realize that what they advocate for is an interregnum between other states rather than a stable state itself. They deny some of the most fundamental aspects of humanity, in my opinion. States exist because humans like to organize into states, of varying types and composition, so to say we should 'kill the state' is to say we should kill humanity.
Somewhat amusingly, some brands of libertarianism fall into the same intellectual trap.
Well, depends on the anarchist. I consider myself an anarchist philosophically. But I don't think that anarchy is a tenable state of affairs long term. Government is probably inevitable in one form or another. But at best it's a necessary evil.
Agree with Zeb. I think some sort of panarchy is the solution - if you want to live in a commune, or a representative republic, or declare yourself a king or whatever, go ahead, but you don't get to force anybody else to join you. Even if they live right next door. In an era of instantaneous, ubiquitous communications, geographical continuity isn't strictly necessary.
"a number of what we would call anarchist-extremist investigations, where we have properly predicated subjects of people who are motivated to commit violent criminal activity on kind of an Antifa ideology."
This word salad reads like mob talk about mob talk. "Be a real shame if a certain fellow were to have a certain kind of discussion with you about what a shame it would be if a certain accident were to befall a certain restaurant."

It's about zoodles, right? Has to be.

Goddamn You CJ! Like getting advice from your friend about this awesome action movie and halfway through it the lead character says, "Come with me if you want to live!" and then shoots 10 people with a revolver without reloading.
I grant each their own preferences but this one is irritating. I'm a straight man and I've heard all the stereotypes about lesbians always being butchy dykes, confused heterosexuals, into golf, etc., etc. and I can see how they would be annoying. But this stupid "Women know how to please women." trope is far more prevalent and far more absurd. Like a bunch of women, uncomfortable or unfulfilled by saying simply "I like cunnilingus." or "I prefer a partner more like me." overcompensate the way a chauvinist would say "Only a real man knows how to please a woman."
I would imagine that the first time out a woman might be better at cunnilingus. But with some practice, men can catch up.
I don't mean to oversimplify, but it's not a six-speed transmission with a two-speed axle and even if it is, most women aren't experts at operating their own transmission (let alone someone else's) with their own tongue. You certainly wouldn't go around saying "Men are know what they're doing when it comes to shifting gears because the anatomy is similar." More pointedly or concretely, I know plenty of women who flat out don't enjoy cunnilingus from anyone, which under the guise of the trope leaves lesbians and lesbianism on the bench. Even if I knew that this was the case for the overwhelming majority of women, I wouldn't go around saying "The only way to please a woman is to avoid cunnilingus." or that "Any woman who enjoys cunnilingus would probably enjoy lesbianism."
It's a flawed logic that gets used so much that it's seems to me much more like the speaker trying to convince themselves of something or reinforce their own frame of mind. Like if every third or fifth black guy who got asked about their race and sports said, "Black athletes generate more power and have better, on average coordination. That's why Barry Bonds, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, etc., etc. dominate sports. It's unique to the race." After a while, especially if you interacted with black people normally, you'd start to wonder how all these presumably smart and sensibly athletic black people suddenly become so cookie-cutter stupid when answering this question.
"I would imagine that the first time out a woman might be better at cunnilingus. But with some practice, men can catch up."
Why? They're not designed for it, so to speak.
Humans are complementary--and the prevalence of strapons and various other faux male addendums to lesbian relationships should make this obvious.

This will also help stop the fat poors from eating greasy carbs.
Real Talk: you know what too many people forget? How awesome it is that market forces have made the opposite of starvation into a problem for poors. It's pretty fucking remarkable, is what.
You're forgetting the part about getting heart disease, cancer and diabetes from that cheap processed garbage.
No i'm not - like i said, the opposite of starvation is now a problem.
Busted, Lee Russell.
Going to a grocery store and buying raw ingredients is still cheaper than buying any processed or fast food. It just takes time to prepare cook, and we Americans are lazy. I know I am.
That would cut way too much into my TV watching time, or my sitting time if I forget to grab the remote on the way to my chair.
Still a hell of a lot better than having people actually starving. People make choices to eat cheap processed garbage. They rarely choose to be on the verge of starvation.

To be fair, you were about to do that anyway.
So the expected Flynn charge came today. One count of lying to the FBI, which could be a sign this is a nothingburger or a sign that they have a larger target.
Isn't "lying to the FBI" the FBI equivalent of a regular cop's "resisting arrest"?
Yes. They got Scooter Libby because he remembered a conversation he had with journalist differently. That was it. And it was a benign conversation. He remembered it going one way and the journalist remembered it another. The only record of the conversation that would have independently established what happened was the journalists notebook. For that they convicted Libby of a felony. Understand, there was nothing criminal about the conversation and there was no allegations Libby did anything wrong other than remember a conversation differently than a reporter did.
It is actually worse the resisting arrest.
Martha Stewart's conviction was similarly BS, if I recall correctly.
Isn't "lying to the FBI" the FBI equivalent of a regular cop's "resisting arrest"?
It's worse, and I am pretty sure they still do not record most interviews. I am sure they conduct these interviews after gathering information, so if what you say goes against what they have gathered, you lose. And it's their word against yours, so never talk to the FBI unless you have a lawyer, and even then don't say anything.
Specifically, Flynn is accused of falsely claiming that he had not asked Russia's ambassador to the United States last Dec. 29 "to refrain from escalating the situation in response to sanctions that the United States had imposed against Russia that same day."
Flynn also allegedly lied by telling the FBI "he did not recall the Russian Ambassador subsequently telling him that Russia had chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of his request," the information says.
Flynn was at the time the National Security Adviser to the President elect. This is nothing but a case of him doing his job. Why he didn't tell the FBI, who knows. But this is pathetic. This is a classic example of why lying to investigators is a crime that needs to go. Basically, Muehller has nothing. If he did, he wouldn't be insisting Flynn plead guilty for this bullshit. If Muehller had any crimes or any prospect of finding any, he would have held this charge over Flynn's head as a threat to get him to cooperate. The fact that Flynn is pleading guilty tells you that Muehller has nothing and insisted on Flynn pleading guilty to this so that he could say at least someone got indicted.

"Robots could soon replace nearly a third of the US workforce"

"That means nearly a third of the American workforce could face the need to pick up new skills or enter different fields in the near future, said the report's co-author Michael Chui, a partner at the McKinsey Global Institute who studies business and economics."

That means that people will have to dream up new and interesting things to do with themselves. They have every time in the past when there has been some kind of industrial revolution. It is possible that this time is different and we are headed for some kind of dystopian world where there is 90% unemployment with the other ten percent employed as police and robot repair, this seems to be Tyler Cowen's view of the future. But, I seriously doubt it.

Most of my friends in tech think this is the direction we are going to go. They give it ~15 years before we start to actually see the problem, rather than just chatter about it. I'm not convinced they're wrong. A lot of the people who will be replaced are going to be low income people, large percentages of which won't have the A) resources and B) IQ to retrain to anything that won't also be eliminated in the near future.
What I find horrifying is that most of my tech friends cheer it. They think utopia is on the horizon. I see that as hell, personally.
Hopefully that's not the way it goes.
Assuming that current trends will continue with no major disruptive changes is the common failure of futurists. Remember, a bit more than a century ago, prognosticators were warning that New York City was going to be literally buried in horse shit within a few decades if it continued to grow.
A lot of the people who will be replaced are going to be low income people, large percentages of which won't have the A) resources and B) IQ to retrain to anything that won't also be eliminated in the near future.
We are already seeing this playing out with opioid and meth abuse among blue collar whites who used to work in manufacturing or mining. Soon it will be the tech geeks themselves once computers become autonomous.
Which opens up scads of new jobs, one of which should be making recreational drug use non-debilitating.
So, we hang our hat on the hope that the advancement doesn't go that way, yes?
I think there are some "ifs" on the horizon that weren't really issues in past technological leaps. It seems likely that most new jobs will require a lot more intelligence than in previous eras. This poses the obvious problem. Compound that with the acceleration of advancement in these fields--which supposedly doubles every 2 years. In a very short time, it won't just be the stupid who are facing elimination, it will be the average, and a little farther down the road it will be the intelligent, the genius, the unique. Maybe we'll hit a technological wall that prevents this. Maybe there will be a point of "computers can be made this good" but improvement beyond that is impossible/prohibitive.
The claim is that by 2050 there will be a supercomputer with the equivalent IQ of 10,000. By this point, the only thing left for humans may be some niche work in spatial reasoning--presuming we don't find a way for computers to learn that.
So, we hang our hat on the hope that the advancement doesn't go that way, yes?
Yes. I don't see any non-authoritarian alternative. People are going to develop the technologies unless someone forces them to stop.
I'm more optimistic than some, I guess. More automation will make even low IQ workers more productive. That's what has happened throughout the past century and everyone is richer for it. Robots are complicated things that need experts to set them up and maintain them now. But the same was true of computers 40 years ago. Now every moron has several computers that they can operate in pretty sophisticated ways all on their own without having to know how they work.
If automation comes very quickly (which I hope it does as I work in the robotics industry), it might be difficult in the short term for some workers. But I don't think it's going to be a permanent problem.
NoVaNick
Indeed. And despite the Libertarian love of drugs, most people do not see this as a good thing for their families, their neighborhoods, their communities, their society.
If we think there's a depression and opioid issue now, imagine when 30-40% of the country doesn't just lose their jobs, but can't find work at all.
One thing I've noticed, though, about many of the tech workers I know is that they have zero experience at fixing toilets, painting a house, waiting tables, building a fence, etc.
There's a reason so many of the killer apps that have been developed are about shuffling documents around, calendaring, exchanging photos, reviewing restaurants, etc.
That means that people will have to dream up new and interesting things to do with themselves.
The world's oldest profession comes to mind. Once everything is automated and nobody needs to work for a living, we will be back to where we started...
Ah, but we've already started the sex robot industry. Why bother having to pay someone every time you want to have sex with them when you could just buy a robot that looks and feels like a human? And one that won't ever treat you like shit. Or blackmail you for stepping out on the wife. Or try to hit you up for child support.
If could take a lot of time for the displaced to adjust, but claims that robots are now poised to take over seem dubious to me. I'm in the tech industry, so I know from firsthand experience how we techies like go talk up how close we are to developing this or that really hard achievement.
Last time I actually saw a robot being repaired, a crew of five or six repairmen was huddled around it, just like a bunch of guys discussing how to fix a car or huddled around a road construction site.
There are a lot of blue collar problem solving skills that would be hard to automate. Anybody who has seen a contractor trying to figure out how to remodel bathroom has seen a certain type of know-how that high-tech folks don't always appreciate.
Finally, there's something telling about this article, predicting how modern everything is going to be, being a PHP link. It almost certainly means the Chronicle has a bunch of web server code that was written years ago by a programmer who is long gone, and have code maintenance problems up the wazoo.
Mike, I agree that there will be some jobs that probably remain difficult for computers to take from us. A lot of repair work will fall under that. Remodeling. That kind of stuff. However, we won't be able to employ enough people in those fields alone. Not near enough.
That may be so. I just think the degree of displacement predicted is the tech industry engaging in our usual premature self congratulations.
I think the low-skilled, retired, and others with no income are harmed more by long-standing government policies that continually encourage inflation and higher prices for everything.
How much of the workforce was replaced by computers over the last 40-50 years? Probably a good chunk. Think of all the typists and file clerks and number crunchers that are no longer necessary.
The whole 'robots will put us out of work' trope is dependent on the definition of 'work' staying the same.
My great grandfather has a casual entry in his diary about ending a ten hour shift at the railroad yard, then hiking a couple miles to pick up a sack of flour and then walking a couple more miles home.
If I told him I was exhausted after my 8 hours shift of sitting in my ergonomic chair writing software he'd tell me something put me out of work a long time ago.
No matter what happens, people will complain about how hard they are working, even if it's only contemplating the next flick of your brush in your job reproducing Pollock paintings..

? April 5, 2017 - Mike Pence won't dine alone with a woman who's not his wife. Is that sexist?
? October 6, 2017 - Another man behaving badly in Hollywood ? this time, Harvey Weinstein. What a shocker
This is just the first example I found in 15 seconds of googling. I wonder how many other people gleefully reporting on all the sexual wrongdoings today are the same people who were making fun of Mr. Pence's prudishness earlier in the year?
I volunteer my name.
There's a lot of middle ground between "won't dine alone with a woman" and "jacks off into a potted plant."
