I've now experienced a combined 7.5 years of my two kids being in the public elementary school system. Most of the teachers and administrators are trying their best, although, about 10% of teachers suck and you never know when your kid is going to get one of the sucky ones by luck of the draw.

The number one problem I see is that the whole system is still centered around mass teaching of "classes" of kids instead of treating each kid as an individual with a unique personality. Each kid's level of interest and pace of learning in various subjects varies. Each kid has whatever capacity they have for sitting still in a classroom before they need to get up and run around or be noisy or chill out for a while.
