Congressional Black Caucus members Bonnie Watson Coleman and Emanuel Cleaver have warned Twitter officials that if the service does not do more to stop "racially divisive communications" Congress will regulate the service to address the issue.

Gab is going to have to pay off a lot more than just two measly congresspeople to pull this off.

    We need a Twitter Tsar.

' "racially divisive communications" Congress will regulate the service to address the issue.'

While they're at it, can Congress regulate the racially divisive communications by the Congressional Black Caucus?

    1. damikesc   9 years ago

While they're at it, can Congress regulate the racially divisive communications by the Congressional Black Caucus?

Why are funds spent on racial Congressional groups? Why should a penny of my tax dollars go to groups who are racist by definition?

  4. Tom Bombadil   9 years ago

    OT:

Donna Karan has opined that if Weinstein's victims didn't want to be assaulted/harrassed, they shouldn't have been so young and sexy. This should be very entertaining.
Somehow, somehow, Hollywood will figure out a way to blame Conservative White Men for this.

They'll continue ignoring it as they are now.

I haven't seen Hillary or Obama say a word.

  5. DajjaI   9 years ago

At the risk of getting banned again by Reason - I don't think government can solve this. I think a better solution is for people to confront and condemn racially divisive remarks. Often this is done with satire - something which government (and Reason censors) are notoriously tone deaf to - and thereby only exacerbate the problem.

  6. Nebelwerfer   9 years ago

Ah, so they're going to shut down Black Twitter?

Operating a business is a privilege granted by the state and businesses must operate in the interests of the state. Serving the state is the highest honor a subject of the sovereign can aspire to.

  10. generalisimo14   9 years ago

I believe the words we are looking for are "fuck off slavers".

    1. Radioactive   9 years ago

don't care about slavers, just fuck off...

    2. Libertarian   9 years ago

I love your trollness. If you start a gofund me account for a bus ticket to D.C. so that you can actually say this to the Black Caucus, I'll contribute.

      1. some guy   9 years ago

He could just Tweet it at them right now.

        1. Libertarian   9 years ago

And not get spit on? Where's the fun in that?

  11. damikesc   9 years ago

It's funny because Twitter is already brutally left-wing and has a tradition of banning conservatives for tiny infractions.

    1. Cy   9 years ago

By 'tiny infractions' you mean not mainstream liberal?

  12. Jerryskids   9 years ago

OT: Here's an interesting article I came across, in its entirety:

A woman in was fatally shot Monday when a neighbor tried to shoot a dog that was attacking her, police said.
The incident happened near Goodwin and Westminster streets in Detroit.
The woman was being attacked by a dog when a neighbor pulled out a gun, officials said. Police said they believe the neighbor tried to shoot the dog, but instead struck the woman.
No additional information has been made available.

No additional information? Sounds like the shooter's an off-duty cop.

    1. Longtobefree   9 years ago

Unlikely. The dog would have been shot as well in that case.

      1. some guy   9 years ago

And an additional 20+ rounds would have hit various other objects in the area.

        1. Radioactive   9 years ago

doubtful, would have missed all those other shots as well

  13. Longtobefree   9 years ago

So racially divisive communications are used in an attempt to suppress free speech?
Sounds like we need a congressional investigation into certain racist organizations in the US congress.
How many tax dollars are spent on the white congressional caucus?

  14. Kllxyzn   9 years ago

Sounds like these two need to be prosecuted for civil rights violations.

  15. Quo Usque Tandem   9 years ago

Anybody know just what is the definition or qualities of a "racially divisive comment?" Is there some standard here, or to paraphrase Justice Brennan on pornography, one of those "I can't [won't] define it but I know it when I see [or hear] it."

    1. Rich   9 years ago

Here's an example: "Humankind can be divided into races."

  16. Libertarian   9 years ago

Police have dramatically changed their account of how the Las Vegas massacre began on Oct. 1, revealing Monday that the gunman shot a hotel security guard six minutes before opening fire on a country music concert ? raising new questions about why police weren't able to pinpoint the gunman's location sooner.

    1. Libertarian   9 years ago

      http://www.latimes.com/nation/.....story.html

      1. some guy   9 years ago

I don't know. I've been to the Mandalay Bay. Those hotel/casinos are massive. It takes forever to get somewhere in them even when you know exactly where you're going. I can fully believe it took 10-15 minutes for hotel security to contact the police and for responding officers to make their way to that room, even at full speed and with good communication.

  17. Rich   9 years ago

if the service does not do more to stop "racially divisive communications" Congress will regulate the service

Obviously the solution is, when you first sign up, Twitter requires checking a box to document your agreement not to tweet "racially divisive communications".

Also, who TF do Coleman and Cleaver think they are?

    1. Radioactive   9 years ago

      Amos & Andy?

      1. Scarecrow Repair & Chippering   9 years ago

        Nice!

  18. Rhywun   9 years ago

The good Congressmen can always move to England or any number of other countries that lack freedom of speech and leave the rest of us the hell alone.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

They're regulating Facebook and Twitter from Germany, right now.

  19. Scarecrow Repair & Chippering   9 years ago

Pretty funny. One of the things I find hard to wait for is getting new versions of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon which are truly neutral; it will come as the dark web expands. One of the ways to speed it up is make the current versions government regulated. They will be so hog tied and bureaucratic so fast that people will desert them in droves.

    So bring it on buddy!
