'Hate Crime' at Michigan State University Was Actually Just a Missing Shoelace
How common are bona fide "bias incidents"? We don't know.

When evaluating alleged hate crimes, it's wise to wait for all the facts. Exhibit A: At Michigan State University (MSU), a "noose" hung on a doorway turned out to be nothing more than a misplaced shoelace.
A student, believing the item had been left there to intimidate minority students, reported it to campus authorities. "I want to recognize the courage it took for the student to report this incident," MSU President Lou Anna Simon then said in a statement.
She continued:
MSU Police and our Office of Institutional Equity were immediately notified, and both promptly began investigations. I want to be clear: This type of behavior is not tolerated on our campus. No Spartan should ever feel targeted based on their race, or other ways in which they identify. A noose is a symbol of intimidation and threat that has a horrendous history in America.
While at this time we do not know all of the details, the Spartan community can be assured we are vigorously investigating this situation.
Said vigorous investigation revealed that the "noose" was just a packaged shoelace, and its missing twin was later located just outside the same residence hall. Someone had found it on the ground and hung it on a doorway so that its rightful owner could claim it.
This is a problem with discussions of campus "bias incidents." Some represent real instances of aggressive, bigoted malice. Others are deliberate hoaxes. Still others are accidents, like the shoelace. It's not always obvious which is which, and the vast majority of these cases aren't solved. We just don't really know how common the bona fide bias incidents are.
For instance, racist fliers recently appeared at MSU's rival school, the University of Michigan. Who posted them? We don't know. It's possible ar genuine neo-Nazi is the perpetrator. It's also possible something else is going on. Despite the recent BuzzFeed piece implying that Trump's election to the presidency has unleashed a wave of hate on college campuses, the truth remains frustratingly elusive.

Funny how most of these end up being fake incidents (where a student wants attention and creates the situation themselves), or non-incidents like this (where people freak out over nothing).
It's like with Jackie or the Duke Lacross team. Things are so common we need to make them up!
My guess is that continued fear over these situations actually significantly jacks up the rate of false incidents like this.
Not all that long ago a college student had a major case of the vapors because, walking outside the chem lab, he was sure he saw Klan members in their hoods. Naturally he reported this outrage. University administrators, no doubt accompanied by a SWAT team and several Navy SEALs, breached the door to the lab only to discover that the "hoods" were nothing more than dust covers on the lab equipment.
Some people truly have opened their minds so far that their brains have fallen out.
"I want to recognize the courage it took for the student to report this incident," MSU President Lou Anna Simon then said in a statement.
It's just like storming the beaches of Normandy.
I saw a book on the history of the civil war on my shelf last week. I had to call my therapist.
Is your therapist also an analyst?
I'll take "The Rapists" for $300, Alex!
So brave.
I find it takes an exceptionally high level of bravery to complain about stuff in liberal bastions of safety like the University.
I bet the campus cops got medals and citations for their selfless devotion to duty and fearless investigation of this Hate Crime/Lost and Found incident.
"I want to recognize the cowardice it took for the student to report this incident," MSU President Lou Anna Simon then said in a statement.
That works even better. Do words even have meaning any more?
Winner. Pick up your chicken dinner at the door.
Words don't mean anything, anymore. Not if you subscribe to postmodernism. Everything is a social construct that must be deconstructed and analyzed, and once you throw multiculturalism into it, you'll realize that "courage" is a construct born from a Western patriarchal imperialist past.
What about a 'women's sort of courage'?
You know who else had courage?
Somewhere, Paul Hennessy is crying.
With the well noted exception of some disparate treatment by the police towards the black community sometimes and in some crime ridden neighborhoods, will someone please explain to me where all of this injustice, racism, and inequality occurs all over the place just for black people?

"There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs ? partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs."
"I am afraid that there is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don't want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public.
-Booker T. Washington, "My Larger Education", 1911
Racist
The truth is not elusive. The truth is groin-grabbingly obvious.
It's a tragic and bizarre state of affairs when it actually does take a lot of courage to say things that are objectively true and objectively good. For example, "there is not a lot of racism of college campuses."
I'm happy to say that anonymously on the internet. Saying it publicly could open myself up to personal and professional risk.
The law is the you lose your house, your stuff, and your first born for questioning something that seems politically convenient.
"there is not a lot of racism of college campuses."
Not by whites vis-a-vis nonwhites, unless the nonwhite person in question is an icky conservative like Clarence Thomas.
My favorite is still when the one Catholic college shut down over reports of a robed klansman walking around campus with a noose...then it turned out to just be a Dominican friar in his habit praying his rosary. That was some good "is it a duck or a rabbit?" there...
How do you know he's a warlock?
Well, he turned me into a Jesuit! ...I got better...
What this tells me is that college students have never purchased shoe laces. He didn't recognize the traditionally packaged lace and thought it was a noose.
Velcro 4 lyfe
What it tells me is that the shoelace company needs to undergo sensitivity training to better understand that their so-called "traditional" method of packaging shoelaces will be perceived as a microaggression, and that they had just focus-grouped this on college campuses they would have avoided being problematic-- while at the same time generated enough material for three protests and a masters thesis in Minority Studies.
*if they had just
If they only had a brain...
Go Velcro next time...
Reported as a hate crime by someone who never learned how to tie a shoelace, because his parents avoided traumatizing him with the sight of something that could have been mis-used in the past for something terrible.
What a wonderful country we are creating.
What we need to do is make the manufacture and sale of shoelaces illegal. Possession of shoelaces should also be fined.
Ah, the admirable courage of the little tiny negroes who are threatened by the little tiny shoelace-sized nooses!
"Spartans"
Spartans, what is your profession? Wah! WahWahWah!
Some represent real instances of aggressive, bigoted malice.
Meh.
Are shoelaces even still a thing?
^ Wears Pro Wings with the velcro.
Shit. Velcro is good enough for the astronauts. It's the 21st century. I guess some people prefer an elaborate network of trusses instead of hernia repair surgery. Different strokes.
Doubt it. Velcro on shoes is the surest sign of our moral rot.
Um, that should read "untied shoe laces" in place of Velcro.
Followed by "droopy drawers".
"I want to recognize the courage it took for the student to report this incident," MSU President Lou Anna Simon then said in a statement."
She can't spell, either. It's S-T-U-P-I-D-I-T-Y.
Try M-S-U...who's their mascot Mr. Potato Head?
Some represent real instances of aggressive, bigoted malice.
"Huzzah For Dixie!" on a copied Confederate flag is " aggressive, bigoted malice"?
That's all you've got?
Why is no one seeing this stuff and realizing that racism is all but dead?
My speculation is 2:1 it's a troll v. real agitprop. "Huzzah for Dixie" can come off mockingly or maybe some wacky Ye Olde Southern Heritage fringe group.
Racism is far from dead though. Don't fool yourself.
It's not dead, just largely irrelevant.
It was probably nothing. But if this was a legit hate crime then I CONDEMN IT.
RE: 'Hate Crime' at Michigan State University Was Actually Just a Missing Shoelace
Just imagine if there was a missing shoe!
Decapitation would've been the only way to deal with this violent felon. (But only after a fair trial of a bunch of hyper-sensitive, clueless proggies, of course.)
I've said before and I'll probably say it again...no noose is good noose.

Now I want to ride in the Great Space Coaster.

"" Some represent real instances of aggressive, bigoted malice""
given that they haven't caught and identified the suspect there yet, how is that an example of anything "real"?
the fact the suspect is white isn't proof of anything. and the fact these claimed "hate" symbols (the confederate flag: something for many years people somehow managed to maturely endure) appeared at exactly a time when other student groups were agitating about the threat of 'hate speech' suggests that it might be little different than similar examples in the past = people inventing monsters to justify over-reaction and power-grabs
"Office of Institutional Equity". Well, I'm disturbed.
mainly by intent
i don't think it would be very difficult to simply count the number of demonstrated hoaxes in a given year...
(conveniently archived here)
...and then try and compare that to some *actually validated examples* from the same period, where the perp was caught, and their hateful-motives confessed to. or, failing that - clear examples of hateful acts, like documented violence, rather than anonymous scrawlings on walls.
of course no one will bother, because to do so would be to expose how one-sided the facts are. Actual "hate crimes" have been in long-term decline, and the claimed victim groups are primarily using victimhood as a means of trying to acquire more institutional power (at least on campuses)
the left loves to claim it is the 'party of science' when they have some simple (oversimplified, usually) data to support their claims; when data shows the opposite of their claim, the fallback is "the subject is very 'complex', you see", and they refuse to even bother looking at basic statistics, waving their hands and insisting that the 'truth is elusive'.
"I want to recognize the courage it took for the student to report this incident,"
Give that student a plastic trophy!!!
Yes, the student should get a trophy for participation.
To be sure, it does take courage to submit a report to the school authorities...
I never knew Michigan State students knew how to tie their own shoes.
The most recent attempt to tie their own shoes led to a shoelace ending up on a door and causing a meltdown.
It appears the little brother needs to learn how to tie his own shoes from his big brother at the other school down the road.
When a banana peel in a tree and a shoelace on a door and pranks about Harambe and chalk on a sidewalk send people to their fainting couches, it is clear that academia has lost the plot, jumped the shark, become ninnies, lost their minds, and become chicken littles. They are calling the wearing of political symbols for our existing president (red hats, MAGA) hate crimes.
Based on what I have seen, virtually every "hate crime" on a college campus is either not (see above) or is a hoax. The most number per capita of actual hate crimes are against jewish buildings.
Never heard a word about it in mainstream media. Too much fun baiting races to bother with follow through.
Snowflakes can't tell the difference between half a pair of shoelaces and a noose? What are they so sheltered they don't recognise a noose when they see one? Maybe they could consider getting "out and about" more often.
The huffing and puffing of admin is comical, particulary so now we know the backstory about the "noose".
Perhaps the only shoes that the snowflakes have ever worn have been strap-ons. Hence, they may not know what a shoelace looks like.
You gotta be wary of those shoelaces, man! They are dangerous.
For all we know, the shoelace could have been placed there by a well-meaning international student who was trying to be a Good Samaritan but was unaware of how fragile young Americans have become.
Enough of this for now. I must go find the bogeyman under my bed!
Honestly, I would rather go find the boogie man and dance.
