London regulators have opted not to renew Uber's license to operate in the city, saying the company is "not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license."
IE haven't greased palms.
Hello.
"London regulators have opted not to renew Uber's license to operate in the city, saying the company is "not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license.""
Suddenly the government doesn't care so much for jobs and people who rely on a service to get around. I imagine this caused quite a disruption in income loss and routine for people.
Uber is still running for 21 days while appeals process runs.
Fine but it still doesn't detract from the point that the government is willing to not care about jobs when it suits them.
Duh doi. It's about the right jobs. Otherwise such governments wouldn't support cartels and unions.
I think the crux of the argument is located further down in the article - aside from the obvious protectionism.
They have declared Uber contractors to be employees, deserving of things like holiday pay, paid days off, sick leave, etc. This despite the fact that drivers set their own hours, can chose what rates they will accept and where they will drive and Uber has no say over any of it.
So, unions.
Who'da thunk it?
40,000 people, according to Reuters. And 3.5 million users just in London.
Be sure to enjoy this tidbit in the Reuters piece:
Why let a little math stop you from harumph harumphing those taxi union bribes into your pockets?
Just use firefox or chrome.
Picture, if you will, President Trump visiting Puerto Rico after Maria strikes. He jokes that it's worse than the White House shoe closet after Hurricane Melania blows through looking for the right disaster-touring stilettos. Believe me. He tells young Puerto Ricans that he's had a change of heart and they can stay in the United States. Next pane, Trump is giving Rand Paul a noogie and saying that Obamacare doesn't cover those so he should vote for Trumpcare. Meanwhile, a racistly-drawn Kim Jong-Un has just launched an ICBM at Washington DC, but instead of being tipped with a nuclear warhead,it is carrying Jimmy Kimmel. At the last minute the Pentagon shoots it down with a Scud missile it had acquired through a loophole in 2009's Cash for Clunkers.
Wonderful!
Yes, Fist is very good at this.
SugarFree never got that you don't have to work blue. That's why they banned him. (Same thing with Payne and Bok, I guess.)
He should make it rhyme. Then he could become famous and maybe make a living at it. Buy a rhyming dictionary already.
Agile Cyborg still pops up now and again.
Speaking of... freaking Andrew Cuomo is jetting down there to lend his support. I honestly didn't think the Puerto Rican vote was that crucial to NY Dems anymore but there it is.
After Hillary you can't take anything for granted, I guess.
I honestly didn't think the Puerto Rican vote was that crucial to NY Dems anymore but there it is.
There are Puerto Ricans all over the place! The Bronx is like a quarter Puerto Rican, and even up in my hood we have large enclaves.
Also, Cuomo went to the Virgin Islands, so he had to go there, too. You know, he can't play favorites.
New York includes Manhattan.
Manhattan is an island.
Therefore Cuomo is the perfect Top Man to tell Caribbean residents how to run their lives.
That ain't it. They denied Taxify that license. Granting Uber (with the same business model as Taxify) a license while denying Taxify would smack of bribery.
The regulators just don't know how to deal with:
1. a business model where the company can't be held liable for anything because it pretends it has no employees.
2. a taxi service that doesn't have to deal with 'The Knowledge of London' (the grueling test that London black cab drivers take re 20,000 streets and 100,000 places of interest) which has been around since the 1860's. This can take 2-3 years and a dozen attempts to pass.
Not saying the regulators are right. Just saying that your explanation is lazy and ignorant.
Fist will take that as a compliment, you know.
I find that learning about things just slows you down, nerdlingers.
150 years ago they didn't have GPS mounted on their horses.
Boy, this seems really hard. Makes me wish there was some sort of technology out there that could tell you where you are and give you driving directions to where you want to go.
Strange faces off against Roy Moore, who has been going around warning that "crime, corruption, immorality, abortion, sodomy, sexual perversion sweep our land."
Children writhing on a pike?
Roy Moore sounds like he would be perfect for the clown show in the Senate.
So now you know who the Breitbart crowd supports...
Moore is one of those self-righteous pricks who believe they're ordained by God Almighty to enforce His righteous ways, no matter what those pesky laws say. So, yeah, the Breitbarters love him.
OTOH, Trump is apparently pushing hard for Strange, so I'm automatically suspicious of him. Looks like another South Park election (douche vs. turd) to me. At this point, I think I'll just be happy that I'm neither a Republican nor a resident of Alabama.

Didn't pay the Danegeld, huh.
1. Collect licensing fees
2. ???
3. Safer!
Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before!
So bring a No. 2 pencil.
Will Li'l Kim be able to phone a friend during the test?
L'il Kim, you're no John Wick.
A Manhattan lawyer is suing the city State Liquor Authority over brunch drink specials, complaining that "bottomless brunches lead to more drinking in the neighborhood, which leads to more noise, more crowds and more uncivil behavior."
That's an odd complaint from a guy who chooses to live in New York City.
But not for one who chose to be a lawyer there.
"Get off my fire escape!"
It was much more pleasant back when the streets were lined with gutter punks and junkies.
Seriously. The east village was soooooo much better before yuppies and hipsters came to the neighborhood to drink.
Bellinni brunches are madness.
Holy Christ, what an asshole.
Not an odd complaint for someone who pays photographers to document cracks in the sidewalks.

...asses hanging out."
I've actually witnessed that at McSorley's.
Things went downhill when they installed a ladies restroom.
Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before!
Un better hope there's no physical fitness section on the test.
Bottomless mimosas on Sunday mornings lead to afternoon naps watching golf/football/baseball/whatever. Tell the US hating Manhattan attorney that this is fucking America - he can move back to Saudi Arabia if he doesn't like it.
Manhattan attorney
I think i found the problem.
headed to Alabama to support Sen. Luther Strange
In support of the new seasons of Luther and Stranger Things on Netflix.
"not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license."
It's a wonder how they haven't gone out of business then!
Strange faces off against Roy Moore, who has been going around warning that "crime, corruption, immorality, abortion, sodomy, sexual perversion sweep our land."
I feel like this is the setup for a really awesome postapocalyptic novel.
"sodomy, sexual perversion sweep our land."
I wish it were true were I live.
Here in Virginia, sodomy is legally defined as any sexual position other than missionary, so it's sweeping more some places than others.
Where I'm from, that's only on weekends and holidays. And the days before and after weekends and holidays.

Just found my new tag.
/Reviews so far have included "surreal" and "batshit crazy."
You're gonna have to fight lc1789 for it.
Aw, poor Citizen just cannot handle my countering your nonsense.
Clearly, you are butthurt about it.
Because Liberty, the Constitution, and Libertarianism are "surreal" and "batshit crazy" to Citizen.
Today President Trump is provoking North Korea on Twitter
I don't know if this is 100% fair. To provoke something, don't you need to have some reasonable expectation of what the response to an action will be? Who can predict North Korea's responses to slights, both imagined and real?
You can provoke action while being ignorant of what it will be. Like ENB provoked you into defending Trump and you provoked me into labeling you a white supremacist.
Yes. For example, North Korea provokes the world by launching nuclear missles across the bow of Japan, and the world responds with sternly-worded warnings, as expected.
Yeah the whole narrative on this North Korea thing is a bit tiring. They've been launching nuclear-capable ICBMs over one of our closest allies and threatening to nuke US territory. This all started long before Trump was president, and wouldn't be any different had Hillary won. People are acting like Kim Jong Un's actions are because of Trump, which is just ridiculous.
After the last two successful subterranean nuclear tests, the only next logical step in their nuclear weapons program is to try one in the ocean. This was going to be their next move no matter what Trump did.
My morning news was trying to blame a recent spate of train derailments on Trump because he wants to "cut safety regulations" or some nonsense. Never mind the previous fifty years of deferred maintenance.
Everything works like that. One of the worst was Bush being responsible for the levees breaking, a problem every president for 40 years has known about. The construction project to fix them would have taken 8 or so years, so even if Bush made that a priority on his first day in office, it wouldn't have been finished in time for Katrina.
Speaking of trains, the narrative last year or two years ago over Republicans "holding up" funds for Amtrak upgrades to prevent crashes was bullshit. Amtrak had the funds for the upgrades for years; they were just years behind and over budge, like every fucking government construction job for anything.
Most of it gets stuffed into the pockets of retired train engineers before any thought is given to "maintenance" or "upgrades".
Yep. Even though these funds were specifically designated for these upgrades. Don't forget that seniority determines who gets to make schedules, so older guys give themselves 60 hour work weeks while limiting the younger guys' hours. Then they blame the government for making them work overtime when they fall asleep at work.
In a "lockbox", no doubt. Just like the "dedicated" funds from cigarette taxes and lottery sales.
Just keep kicking that can down the road. Next thing you know it's 9/11 times ten thousand.
90,000/11
Seems to me, an ocean test would be the best thing that could possibly happen. I don't think the Norks could arrange it without even a sniff being caught by the US intelligence services, and being ready to lob in a nice laser guided bomb from some stealth platform at 40,000 ft*. How easy would it be to use a low-yield nuke and make it look like an accidental detonation minutes before the actual test? So much for the research team and highly decorated military witnesses.
The hardest part about it was making sure Chinese/Russian intelligence services didn't catch you doing it.
[*If we don't have kinetic strike weapons in orbit for just this purpose, the Defense people has been sitting on their thumbs.]
I think the only reason we haven't tried to shoot a missile down yet is because of the PR fiasco for us, and PR dream scenario for NK, that would happen if it failed.
+666
RWR to you yungunz.
I don't blame Trump for Kim's actions, but I do blame him for his stupid response. Apocalyptic bombast has long been a specialty for the Norks, and no one really expects them to back it up in anything other than symbolic ways, since everyone knows they can't. But when the POTUS starts responding in similar tones, it really can't end well. When you really do have a big stick to swing, people eventually expect you to put up or shut up. Best-case scenario is that this all eventually blows over, leaving Trump (and by extension the US) looking like a silly blowhard. I don't like that much, but I like it a whole lot better than the likely cost, in both money and human death and suffering, of military action against North Korea.
Then again, I'm still desperately trying to figure out why North Korea is America's problem in the first place. They're tiny, poor and a long way away from us, therefore posing zero existential threat. Let China, South Korea and maybe Japan deal with it. They have some actual stake in the matter, whereas we only do because we choose to involve ourselves.
North Korea is not threatening to nuke America not Sweden. That's why its our problem.
Plus, Truman let the cease fire happen decades ago without really resolving the Korean War.
I'm reminded of: 10 Practical Rules for Dealing with the Borderline Personality -- but none of these work when BOTH parties are crazy.
complaining that "bottomless brunches
To be fair, the sign traditionally just warns against trying to receive service while absent a shirt or shoes.
I figured laying the napkin over my lap took care of the social niceties?
Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before!
Buzz Pyongyang with B-1's every hour on the hour?

I am inserting this reply before all the other replies to your comment. Look at the power I have.
ATTENTION!
We here at Reason would like to announce our first annual Commenter Of The Week award.
To no one's surprise this week's winner is Crusty Juggler! Thank you for all you do, Crusty, and swing by the office anytime to pick up your gift. Your contributions this week have been better than usual, and we here on the Reason Staff collectively want to bang your face. Congratulations, beefcake.
We would also like to announce our Least Favorite Commenter Of The Week award, and that winner is Tony. Tony, you've won a fresh batch of our homemade "nature's fudge," which should you should be receiving any day now. Way to go!
....we here on the Reason Staff collectively want to bang your face.
Is that English street slang for: "we made you a nice warm bowl of mashed potatoes" - ??
I can't wait to find out!
🙂
This it total bullshit. It should be me. I work hard daily. I deserve it. I should be least favorite commenter every week.
Why are you not 50 points ahead?
Why has he not already won 23.6 seconds before the prize was awarded?
You'll always be MY least favorite commenter, Eugene.
Well, the staff has withdrawn the announcement and now we all who replied look like fools.
Maybe you should hold the thanks until after he swings by the office
Whoa - - is it me, or did Reason Staff totally pull their public service announcement?
London regulators have opted not to renew Uber's license to operate in the city, saying the company is "not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license."
Presumably because it is a widely used, affordable service. England is not fit and proper to be it's own country anymore.
Valerie Plame tweets story blaming 'America's Jews' for foreign wars
Literally anti-Semitic.
I think being anti-Semetic is considered okay now.
Well, at least we found something on which both Valerie Plame and Richard Spencer can agree.
Guilt by retweet.
If we can't trust America's grudge-carrying former dark lantern carriers to be impartial when it comes to entire ethnicities, who can we trust?
She always seemed like an attention-seeking crazy person from the start. People ignored these signs because she was anti-Bush. Most of the icons of the "Resistance" are in fact bat-shit crazy or corrupt horrible human beings.
Kamala Harris? Spent her entire career defending prosecutors and cops getting false confessions and lying under oath, claiming that it isn't a big deal. But because somebody "manterrupted" her, she's a fucking hero.
Preet Bharara? I don't think I need to remind anybody here of why he's the fucking worst. Also, he was grossly incompetent at doing his actual job, failing miserably in his only personal court appearance.
Maxine Waters is a raving lunatic who has consistently been labeled one of the most corrupt politicians in the country by non-partisan watchdogs.
Keith Ellison was endorsed by David frickin Duke because he agreed with his views on race and the Jews.
You know who's a Dem I could possibly vote for, though? Tulsi Gabbard.
It's her Jewish New Year Resolution, to hate the Jews!

complaining that "bottomless brunches lead to more drinking in the neighborhood, which leads to more noise, more crowds and more uncivil behavior."
This guy needs to have a drink and relax.
I'm actually curious where these bottomless brunches are. All I find are ones with drink specials or perhaps one free drink with a meal.
An update on last evening's link: Married mother of one California high school teacher arrested and charged after 'having sex with an underage student for several months'
Send your child to a public school and the teacher will rape them for months. Months.
This is what happens when women outnumber the men in the teaching profession by 100-1. There are no colleagues to get nasty with in the teachers lounge. Instead its car sex with pimple faced 17 year olds who will fuck anything they can get their hands on.
OT: A new day, the same Maxine Waters...
"Bill Clinton got impeached because he lied," Waters declared. "Here you have a president who I can tell you and guarantee you is in collusion with the Russians, to undermine our democracy. Here you have a president who has obstructed justice, and here you have a president that lies every day."
"When is the black community going to say, 'Yeah, impeach him!' It's time to go after him," she declared.
Bubba was impeached because he lied under oath. This is called perjury. And you, my dear, have zero evidence to support your accusations. I bid you good-day.
"Impeachment is about whatever Congress says it is. There is no law that dictates impeachment," Waters declared.
Actually, there is. It's defined in the constitution. You know that thing you swore an oath to? It is literally the law of the land.
I'll take it back to the "he lied" and go against type by playing tu-quoque:
There are so many to chose from, but I'm going to go with Maxine Waters' repeated claims that the US government created the crack epidemic to destroy black neighborhoods and kill black people.
Although her work on Cuba is really strong too (I especially like the tidbit about Castro helping those fleeing persecution) ... from the Wikipedia:
But not influenced by a foreign communist power or carrying their water or undermining our democracy or anything... got it..
Wow, I didn't know any of it. She is a piece of work. Commies must be laughing their asses off behind her back.
Yeah, "Mad Max" Waters really puts the "idiot" in "useful idiot".
No, she is right in one sense, the president doesn't actually have to break any laws in order to get impeached.
"When is the black community going to say, 'Yeah, impeach him!' It's time to go after him," she declared.
In my anecdotal experience, the "black community" around here doesn't have any problem with Trump.

The electoral college is a national security threat.
Hamilton and his colleagues never could have envisioned a year like 2016, when an enemy state?Russia?was able to manipulate America's election process with stunning effectiveness. But it's clear the national security rationale for the Electoral College is outdated and therefore it should be retired.
I don't think any of these words are being used correctly.
It's bats--t insanity and half the country believes every word.
It's like they come up with their arguments by pulling phrases out of a hat- "electoral college" + "Russia" + "Racist"
Tony's on a roll a couple of threads up, if you're looking for more examples.

ISIS on the run
The U.S. air mission against the Islamic State is operating at a high tempo and making significant progress, Air Force Lt. Gen. Jeffrey L. Harrigian told "Fox and Friends" Friday morning.
Harrigan is commander of Air Force operations under U.S. Central Command, which carries out airstrikes in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.
"As you look at whats happening on the battlefield today, we've got them on the run," Harrigan said, adding significant progress has been made under the Trump administration. "Nothing but success."

College students do not understand/appreciate freedom.
It's not just crazy places like the University of California at Berkeley where surprisingly large numbers of U.S. college students believe that violence and shouting are acceptable methods to prevent people from saying things. Fifty-one percent of all U.S. college students believe shouting is an acceptable response to free speech, and one in five (19 percent) believe violence is an acceptable response, according to results from a national survey of 1,500 students in 49 states and DC.
Fifty-three percent of survey respondents said colleges should "create a positive learning environment for all students by prohibiting certain speech or expression of viewpoints that are offensive or biased against certain groups of people" rather than "create an open learning environment where students are exposed to all types of speech and viewpoints, even if it means allowing speech that is offensive or biased against certain groups of people."
I was a busy bee yesterday, so I'm just finding out that there's been another incident of Turkish state employees beating up American protesters on American soil.
MAGA!
Here's an example of non-Americans who don't want to assimilate and don't like the 1st Amendment. As protestoers call Erdogan a terrorist and are escorted out of a speaking event, pro-Erdogan supports hit the people being escorted as if it was Turkey.
Turkish supports of Erdogan don't believe in 1st Amendment and hit protesters
