The storm is currently on track to hit Florida on Friday night

More like Hurricane Squirma. Am I right?

    1. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

      Hello.

  2. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Gas stations in south Florida are running out of fuel as residents evacuate before Hurricane Irma's possible arrival.

If only they could use pythons for fuel.

    1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

They could use these. [flexes guns]

    2. Conchfritters   8 years ago

They are all probably wishing they lived in North Dakota Arabia now.

        Lol, no.

  3. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

...blindsiding his own Republican allies as he reached across the aisle to resolve a major dispute for the first time since taking office.

He fired them from the position of allies.

    1. I can't even   8 years ago

Pretty sure they were never allies. He would be bragging about Obamacare repeal and tax reform right now if they were.

  4. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Attorneys general from 15 states and the District of Columbia have filed a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping President Trump from rescinding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, also known as DACA.

More like classless action. Am I right, Mr. President?

    1. Get To Da Chippah   8 years ago

"Your Honor, President Trump is trying to end an unconstitutional policy! You must stop him!"

      1. BYODB   8 years ago

Yeah, if it survives a court challenge we can safely assume the Republic is entirely dead instead of mostly dead. You know, to blathe.

"The officer at the center of controversy over his treatment of a Utah nurse was told not to worry about obtaining blood from an unconscious car crash victim in the hospital, but tried anyway, Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen told CNN Wednesday."

And he would have gotten away with it, too. Who is this "Logan Police" in the equation, anyway?

    1. Sports Reporter Charles Manson   8 years ago

Apparently, the Logan police are the ones who wanted the blood sample in the first place, and they asked the Salt Lake City police for help.

They're saying the escalation of the situation wasn't their fault.

      1. Chinny Chin Chin   8 years ago

        Buck?

        Passed.

That's some fine police work, Gary.

      2. Sports Reporter Charles Manson   8 years ago

They're probably sweating right now, hoping they can distance themselves from the whole mess and blame one or two guys from another department.

        1. Sports Reporter Charles Manson   8 years ago

They may be worried that nurses think like cops, which would mean that they would be looking for opportunities to vindictively screw people who disrespected them

I think most nurses are more professional than that, but maybe the cops think it's the better part of valor not to find one of their number seeking treatment after being blamed for assaulting medical personnel.

      3. Mickey Rat   8 years ago

Any explanation of why they were wanting a blood sample from the collateral damage of the chase?

        1. sarcasmic   8 years ago

Because if the truck driver had any trace of drugs or alcohol in his system, the cops can say the death was cause by him, not their chase.

          1. Mickey Rat   8 years ago

I figure that is the true reason, but have they concocted a plausible cover reason for wanting a blood sample?

            1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

They're cops. If this incident doesn't go down the memory hole in the next couple of news cycles, that's when they'll start floating reasons beyond FYTW.

?Attorneys general from 15 states and the District of Columbia have filed a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping President Trump from rescinding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, also known as DACA.

Still don't get how undoing an executive order of HIGHLY dubious legality can even remotely be litigated in court. The President has the undeniable power to undo prior executive orders.

    1. creech   8 years ago

Weren't there AGs from other states threatening to file federal lawsuits against Obama's DACA order?
Instead of dueling lawsuits, Congress needs to do its job. (and then more lawsuits). These Dreamer kids will be approaching retirement by the time this gets resolved.

      1. Zeb   8 years ago

Maybe that's for the best. They can spend their working lives here, contributing to society. Then when it comes time for them to start collecting Medicare, deport them.

        1. BYODB   8 years ago

          Ouch.

    2. Mickey Rat   8 years ago

A mere President overruling the edict of the God-Emperor? Are you mad?

    3. Arizona_Guy   8 years ago

Immigration law is the purview of congress. How does a state government have any standing to sue over a rescinded EO?

      1. BYODB   8 years ago

Well, they sued to keep Trump from issuing an Executive Order regarding a temporary ban from certain countries so I guess they figure that since that worked out why not try on this? If they win, they know they can completely circumvent the President. While I intensely dislike the idea of an Imperial President issuing fiats, I'm not sure trading that for an Imperial Bureaucracy that can do whatever the hell it wants is much better.

  7. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

"The officer at the center of controversy over his treatment of a Utah nurse was told not to worry about obtaining blood from an unconscious car crash victim in the hospital, but tried anyway, Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen told CNN Wednesday."

Is this the beginning of a subtle nudge in the direction of the underside of a bus?

    1. Sports Reporter Charles Manson   8 years ago

They know that if nurses acted like cops they'd retaliate against any cop they blamed for an assault on one of their number. Best not to take the risk - best to distance themselves from the assault on the nurse.

The Oxford comma is very important.

          1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Oxford commas are for people without common sense.

Scientists Hatch Bold Plan to Save Planet from Supervolcano

The Yellowstone Caldera is an enormous craterlike depression measuring 30 miles by 45 miles and filled with molten material (magma). If it were to blast its innards out in a super-eruption, it's no exaggeration to say that the human race could be imperiled.

But scientists at NASA have sketched the rough outlines of a plan that they say would not only spare us from a deadly super-eruption but also turn the Yellowstone supervolcano into a source of electric power. In a write-up of the plan first shared with the BBC, the team argues that we could siphon heat from the caldera until it becomes too cool to erupt ? and convert the geothermal energy into electricity.

I've seen this movie before, and the plan doesn't end well.

Minneapolis officer's mental records probed in Justine Damond shooting

Investigators are looking into the mental health and medical records of a Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an Australian native in July.

A search warrant filed publicly Tuesday shows an investigator with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was seeking investigative background records, including pre-employment psychological exams and unredacted personnel files, of Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor.

Court documents show the city provided investigators with the requested information.

Robert E. Lee Statue's Removal in Dallas Delayed by Federal Court

The City of Dallas voted Wednesday to immediately remove a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee from a public park, but the work was abruptly stopped by a federal judge.

The Robert E. Lee monument in Lee Park was created by Alexander Phimister Proctor, a New York sculptor, and unveiled on June 12, 1936, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, according to an op-ed essay in The Dallas Morning News this week by Rick Brettell, a professor of art history at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Mr. Brettell urged the city to move slowly on the question of what to do with the Lee monument, which he said was artistically significant because it is "one of the very few equestrian monuments in the history of art in which a leader shares his monument with someone nameless."

    Racists gonna racist.

    1. Conchfritters   8 years ago

Holy shit - time to scrub FDR from the history books. Thankfully we had President Henry Aagard Wallace to see us though those dark times.

    2. Chinny Chin Chin   8 years ago

The Dallas Times report on the event said that FDR described Lee as "one of the greatest American Christians and one of our greatest American gentlemen."

      FDR undeniably a racist pig.

Yeah, most of us in Dallas are wondering what the fuck the City Council is thinking. I actually listen to their meetings on the Radio (yeah, I know) and I've come to the conclusion that they're all actually retarded. No surprise there.

No one in particular in Dallas seems that upset about the statue as far as I can tell.

Google and Sex Traffickers Like Backpage.com

Sex traffickers in America have the police and prosecutors pursuing them, but they do have one crucial (if secret) ally: Google.

Google's motto has long been "Don't be evil," and I admire lots about the company. But organizations it funds have for years been quietly helping Backpage.com, the odious website where most American victims of human trafficking are sold, to battle lawsuits from children sold there for sex.

Now Google is using its enormous lobbying power in Washington to try to kill bipartisan legislation that would crack down on websites that promote sex trafficking.

    My God.

'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' Prequel From Ryan Murphy Scores Two-Season Order at Netflix

Ratched, a prequel series from executive producer Ryan Murphy revolving around the character of Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, has landed at Netflix with a two-season, 18-episode order.

The project, with Emmy winner Sarah Paulson set to take on the role of Nurse Ratched, landed at Netflix following a competitive bidding process with Apple and Hulu also among the suitors

The origin story begins in 1947 and follows Ratched's journey and evolution from nurse to monster. The show will follow her deadly progression through the mental health care system.

Sarah Paulson is great, but heavens to Betsy Netflix will make anything.

    1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

Since it's a Ryan Murphy joint, we'll learn the real reason Nurse Ratched became so horrible was BIGOTRY.

    2. Hank Stamper   8 years ago

Wonder if the Kesey family signed off on this as one of Ken's complaints about the movie was that that they reduced the plot to RP vs Ratched instead of the bureaucratic machine of the mental health institutions vs individual autonomy. I'd hate to see Kesey's work ruined further as he is a great author (especially from Libertarian prospective) and I highly recommend this book or Sometimes a Great Notion.

  14. Sports Reporter Charles Manson   8 years ago

    From the nurse-assault article:

"Jensen said Logan police didn't pursue a warrant because they didn't initially realize the victim was unconscious. They had hoped to get the victim's consent, Jensen said."

Just like they try to get a driver's "voluntary consent" to search the vehicle.

They may not have known that the crash victim was not only unconscious, but also a cop (from Idaho), so how likely is it that, even if conscious, he'd have consented to a search?

Kid Rock rattles off political views in fiery 'stump speech' at Grand Rapids show

playing for a high-energy capacity crowd at Van Andel Arena, the metro Detroit-born star worked up a theatrical, rhyming, profanity-filled stump speech of sorts, knocking everything from "deadbeat dads" to those who "take a knee" during the national anthem.

The speech, preceded by "Hail to the Chief" and delivered at a podium with a pair of flag-waving female dancers at his side, turned out to be prelude to a performance of his song "You've Never Met a Motherf----- Quite Like Me."

The Grand Rapids crowd, many holding aloft smartphones to document the moment, cheered most of Rock's big applause lines as he laid out his views: He applauded single moms but bemoaned those who "can't even take care of themselves but keep having kid after ? kid." He blasted those who "call me a racist 'cause I'm not (politically correct)," adding that they "think you have to remind me that black lives matter." And he snarled: "Nazi f------ bigots and the KKK, screw all you ass-----, stay the f--- away."

He neared the end of his speech by saying: "If 'Kid Rock for Senate' has got folks in disarray, wait 'til they hear 'Kid Rock for President of the U.S.A.'!"

Is Mike Judge scripting the universe?

    1. Sports Reporter Charles Manson   8 years ago

The absolute worst part of the whole thing? I can actually think of worse people who are currently in Washington, so hearing that Kid Rock wants to be a Senator is actually not the worst case scenario.

Yes, the Alt-Left Exists and It's Terrifying

Like canaries in the coal mine, liberals who do not (or no longer) subscribe to the Alt-Left ideology have been sounding the alarm about this creeping plague of repressive groupthink for quite a while now. I believe this attempt to dissuade our use of the term Alt-Left is purposeful (even if not consciously recognized by individuals who are doing it) ? for how can we discuss something we cannot refer to by name?

When asked to define Alt-Left, I would describe it as a leftist but illiberal authoritarian ideology rooted in postmodernism and neo-Marxism that supports censorship, condones violence in response to speech, is obsessed with identity politics (much like the Alt-Right), and functions like a secular religion that gives its believers a sense of moral self-worth.

It masquerades as a form of liberalism, but it has more in common with authoritarianism than its true believers can (or want to?) admit. It claims to speak for the marginalized, but it either ignores or attempts to hatefully shame members of marginalized groups who do not subscribe to the ideology.

    1. Crusty Juggler - Lawbertarian   8 years ago

It is not simply Antifa; it is the ideology that undergirds Antifa, and it has swallowed much of BLM and intersectional third wave feminism. It wishes to swallow the whole of the left, the country, the world. It is rooted in nihilism, resentfulness, and arrogance, though it presents itself as being rooted in equality, justice, and morality. It favors collectivism over individualism, statism over liberty, forced equality of outcome over freedom.

Now?imagine if I had to say that mouthful every time I wished to talk about the Alt-Left because I bought into the notion that to give it a name it would be insulting to fellow liberals. No, to speak of it by name is to out it for what it is and to reduce some of its power.

      Phew.

The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort."

"Hurricane May Hit Florida on Friday"

I thought it was called Irma and that it hasn't hit yet.

      Stupid, ugly Irma.

President Trump struck a deal with Democratic congressional leaders

Bipartisanship: How you know that you are extra screwed.

During the next Republican administration/filibuster/obstructionism, Trump will be fondly recalled by Democrat concern trolls as one of the good ones.

OH MY GOD GOOD MORNING MY DARLING FRANKENTRUMPKENCUCKS.

AddictionMyth used to love the AM links. Ah, memories.

    Don't ban me bro.

Jill Stein ruefully approves this message.

If they are prone to ban you, why are you so eager for their company? Sounds like the makings of a dysfunctional relationship.

There's no shortage of sites which would value commenters with your, ah, distinctive contributions.

Israel bombed Syrian gas and missile factories. They did what Trumbama shoulda done a long time ago. Kept wondering why the Jewnerals withdrew. Now we know!

Jewnerals? I'm saving that one for later!

The storm is currently on track to hit Florida on Friday night.

Tracks are now holding the eye to skirt up the east coast of FL. Looks like it could be messy.

Attorneys general from 15 states and the District of Columbia have filed a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping President Trump from rescinding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, also known as DACA. from enforcing the law as written while deferring to the legislature to pass legislation, also know as doing the job of chief executive officer.

    This is how you TDS.

Students showed up to school in black clothing, saying they were mourning the loss of intelligence in this country. Some were in tears, hugging and holding each other in the hallways. My school had a total of three walkouts with a large portion of the school participating, myself included.

    [...]

So when our journalism teacher invited Forest Machala ? a 22-year-old Trump supporter and former Roosevelt student ? to visit our class, we were surprised, to say the least.

Before the discussion began, Ms. Roux told us that we could leave if we weren't comfortable, and about half the class left to work on other assignments. I was devastated from the election because I supported Clinton, and I wasn't sure if I could handle talking with a Trump supporter. But my curiosity outweighed my fears and I decided to stay ? until I heard Machala say that his faith in Trump didn't falter after the release of the Access Hollywood tape, which shows Trump making misogynist comments about women.

I was so upset, I had to run out of the room to calm myself down. After a few minutes of deep breaths, I realized that he felt as strongly about his beliefs as I do about mine and I should respect him.

Yeah, I still have a few memories of high school that survived all the drugs and alcohol and if memory serves 'leaving school' was always the goal. The justifications didn't really fucking matter.

The idea that someone under the age of 18 really understands jack or shit about politics is false. They don't even know history or economics yet, by and large, and without key pieces of knowledge they're useless. Thankfully, virtually none of them vote even while PAC's spend a whole fuck load of money trying to entice them. After all, they're total idiots. Basically the perfect voter.

I know this because I remember myself at 18, and it was a fucking travesty.
