Today in President Donald Trump tweets: Complaining about James Clapper (who questions Trump's fitness for office), and complaining about both the failure to repeal the Affordable Care Act and the hold up on debt ceiling legislation. He also complained about critiques of his speeches.

  • The White House does appear to have guidelines in the works to implement Trump's tweet-announced ban of transgender enlistment in the military. New enlistments would be prohibited, and Defense Secretary James Mattis would have the discretion to decide whether to remove transgender people currently serving.
  • The person who won the $758.7 million Powerball jackpot has come forward in Massachusetts, and she isn't you.
  • After the Department of Justice scaled back the extent of a search warrant against DreamHost to provide data about an anti-Trump website they suspect was involved with violent Inauguration Day protests, a judge is ordering DreamHost to comply, but with court supervision to provided additional protections of the privacy of third-party data.
  • White nationalist Christopher Cantwell, 36, has surrendered to police, charged with two felony counts of an illegal use of tear gas and one count of malicious bodily injury by means of a caustic substance over the events of the Charlottesville, Virginia, rally.
  • Hurricane Harvey will probably be a category 3 storm by the time it hits Texas over the weekend.

He also complained about critiques of his speeches.

When the president says something that means it’s not insane.

  2. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

The person who won the $758.7 million Powerball jackpot has come forward in Massachusetts, and she isn’t you.

    YOU DON’T KNOW THAT, SHACKELTON.

    1. Don't look at me.   8 years ago

I doubt the winner has time for this dreck.

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

I would spend ALL my time on here.

        1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

I would also spend much of the money annoying lefties like buying all the confederate statues and putting them on private property encased in bulletproof glass and other security measures to prevent their removal or vandalism.

I would also buy Reason and fire Shikha for being such a horrible writer.

          1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

I would spend the money to get myself two chicks.

            1. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

If you just want someone to constantly groom you for ticks, Crusty, you could save a lot of money by getting a possum.

              1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

                Haha, I hate myself.

            2. Curt   8 years ago

That’s it? If you had $758.7M, you’d do two chicks at the same time?

              1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

You only need $1 Million to do that.

You would need a million to get two chicks to double up on a guy like you.

    2. CE   8 years ago

      What about the Unsullied?

    3. Cyto   8 years ago

      Real question:

Is it unacceptable to consider the financial commitment you are making before hiring someone? In this case, the taxpayers are apparently on the hook for gender reassignment surgery, should a member of the armed forces decide that such surgery is necessary. Assuming this is true, wouldn’t declining to hire someone who comes with maybe $100k in medical costs, plus an open-ended commitment for psychiatric services be a rational decision?

If that’s not acceptable, what about someone who needs a heart-lung transplant. I mean, right now they’d probably be medically ineligible for the military. But is that a legit redline? Or maybe someone with a genetic condition that renders them fine for now, but a million dollar medical liability in 5 years?

      1. Overt   8 years ago

That is a fair question. Of course, our medical coverage of military veterans has often been predicated along the lines of “If you are willing to put your life on the line defending the country, we are willing to pay your medical bills.”

But honestly, the best way to handle this is to say “We will allow you in the service, but we won’t pay for gender reassignment”.

        1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

See, that’s not correct. The military declines people serving for various medical reasons. Part of that is military readiness and being a military of sick people the other reason is that after serving in the military, all medical conditions that are deemed “service connected” are taken care of by the veterans affairs department.

I’m debating if you can read that in two ways. That he consciously avoids following the herd (I never follow the herd and I do that on purpose). Or, that he doesn’t intentionally follow the herd (I never follow the herd on purpose, but sometimes it happens by accident).

              The latter might be allowable.

I don’t care about teenage suicides.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Suicide is definitely a touchy topic with me. I do think it is sad when someone dies, doesn’t matter who it is particularly. I hold that one holds absolute ownership of their own body, and with that the right to decide to die. And in fact, I think that choosing to live should be an affirmation in of itself, by choosing not to kill myself I make an active choice to live. It is not a neutral state.

If someone chooses to die though, I will forever respect that choice. Even if it is a choice that often saddens me to see. This is also why I don’t like the Right To Die debate, as it’s almost always structured so that the person must meet some arbitrary threshold of illness before they are allowed to die by the State.

Finally, I think it interesting that I can find maybe 2 philosophers who were pro-suicide, Jean Amery and Arthur Schopenhauer.

        1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Fudge, I had a thoughtful reply to you get eaten by the internet. Long story short:

I mostly agree with you; a right to live is inseparable from a right to die. This should not require state approval.

My cold reaction to suicides stems from reflection on my own black moods and self destructive nature; my own contemplation of oblivion. That said, nobody close to me has committed suicide, I imagine that must heavily impact the views one has on the matter.

          1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I just don’t know. I don’t know someone’s mind. They made their decision, and I respect it.

Of course, assholes who shoot up a grocery store before killing themselves are exempted.

          2. Overt   8 years ago

From a libertarian perspective, I agree subject to one niggling point: It is wrong to commit suicide if it will leave unsettled obligations that you have. The simplest is unpaid debts to the bank, but can also include kids who you are obligated to support, a spouse to whom you have financial obligations or victims of some other crime you committed. In those cases, suicide is worse than skipping out on a contract, because you cannot ever be held to account.

That said, I don’t see how my niggling point really results in some sort of enforceable action. Certainly, someone who fails to commit suicide could be held to account for attempting to breach a standing contract. But to what end? And for all the rest of the people, they are dead so what are you gonna do?

Nevertheless, I do stress the breach of contract exception because I think people too often want to paint the dead guy as a victim. If I skipped the country to escape the pain of housing and clothing my kids, I’d be called an asshole. I wouldn’t be “The Victim” if I was just really sad, or in pain, and my flight had me hiding in a Mexican hovel for 20 years. I’d still be (rightfully) expected to settle my obligations and (rightfully) judged for being an asshole who ran away from problems I helped create.

          Hume, too.

          1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I think the two I mentioned are unusual for actually being PRO-suicide to some extent. Not just neutral, or arguing that it is permissible. They argue to some extent it being good to some extent.

Yes, it is way more than 100 miles. There’s a sign somewhere on the lower cape, but before P-Town, that lists Boston at over 100 miles.

Charlottesville shrouds divisive Confederate statues in black cloth

(Reuters) – To applause from spectators, workers in Charlottesville, Virginia, covered two statues of Confederate generals with black tarpaulins on Wednesday in honor of the woman who was killed during a rally by white nationalists in the liberal-leaning college town.

    You’re safe now, Charlottesville.

White nationalist Christopher Cantwell, 36, has surrendered to police, charged with two felony counts of an illegal use of tear gas and one count of malicious bodily injury by means of a caustic substance

Jesus, this makes it sound like acid, not pepper spray. Fuck him anyway I guess.

Nevada teacher accused of sex romps with at least two teens resigns

Whitaker was arrested June 5 on charges of engaging in sexual conduct with two high school students aged 16 and 18.

    The fun part:

Investigators said Whitaker was arrested following an “unconventional eight-month probe which included surveillance,” according to Express.co.uk.

“We did a lot of surveillance and some things like that and we were able to gather a lot of information that led us to circle around and we finally got down to the arrest,” Supp continued.

    “Some things like that” indeed.

This is becoming a daily occurrence. Move over sex trafficking, this is the real shit. They should send undercover cops back to highschool with the goal of entrapping a teacher. I’d watch that movie.

‘Jews vs. Nazis’ beer pong game gets students expelled, suspended

A student who took a photo of a game of beer pong with Nazi and Jewish symbols was expelled from The Lovett School, officials said Wednesday.

That student misled school officials about his role in setting up and participating in the game, which contributed to the decision to expel him, Lovett Headmaster William S. Peebles said Sunday in a letter to parents.

Another student, who hosted the off-campus party with 19 current Lovett School seniors, three alumni and about 10 other students and graduates, was suspended and will have an opportunity to reapply to the school, Peebles said.

Four more seniors were also suspended and two students who appeared to be watching the game were banned from co-curricular activities during the first two weeks of school.

    1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

The game not only involved alcohol use by some minors in attendance, but also the decision to use the symbols.

“The fact that someone could even conceive of such a game and then play it and think it’s funny is beyond words,” Rabbi Peter Berg told Channel 2 Action News.

Berg said his initial reaction was one of absolute horror when several people emailed a photo of the game in progress.

In the image, students are seen playing beer pong with cups in the shapes of a swastika and a Star of David.

“To see that image as a Jewish person is something that the Jewish students in that school, it’s gonna take a long time to get over, if ever,” Berg told Channel 2.

Fun fact: Hogan’s Heroes and The Producers were both made in the 60s.

“To see that image as a Jewish person is something that the Jewish students in that school, it’s gonna take a long time to get over, if ever,”

So merely observing a swastika is comparable to going through a Holocaust. That’s not offensive to people who actually went through the latter, at all…

the grouping of the Star of David cups v. the swastika cups makes it easier for the Nazis to win.

Tennessee sheriff sent to prison for sex with inmates

A rural Tennessee sheriff who admitted to having sex with inmates under his watch was sentenced Wednesday to 2 years and 9 months in prison.

“The person standing before you is not an evil person,” Little told the judge. “He made a mistake.”

After the Department of Justice scaled back the extent of a search warrant against DreamHost to provide data about an anti-Trump website they suspect was involved with violent Inauguration Day protests, a judge is ordering DreamHost to comply, but with court supervision to provided additional protections of the privacy of third-party data.
