The United States will experience the first total solar eclipse over the country in nearly 40 years.
The day the moon and the sun had sex... AND EARTH WATCHED!
Hello.
"Police in Barcelona are still looking for the alleged driver behind last week's van attack."
Did they try looking in Charlottesville?
The day the moon and the sun had sex... AND EARTH WATCHED!
Hot coronal mass ejection all over the moon's backside.
The United States will experience the first total solar eclipse over the country in nearly 40 years.
Uh, spoiler alert on the picture. Plus, maybe a little heads up that I should put my safety goggles on?
The goggles do nothing.
UP AND AT THEM
I'm old enough to remember the last one. No one felt like they had to treat us like morons who didn't already know not to stare at the sun back then. Or wear seat belts. Or bike helmets.
I am also old enough to remember the last one. But we weren't close enough to totality to be tempted to stare at the blazing sun.
I have already put April 8, 2024 on my calendar.
You'd think that would already be on it. Since it's a date and all.
President Trump will address the nation on the war in Afghanistan tonight; he is expected to announce a troop surge.
If we get enough Americans over there to outnumber the Afghans, we can finally make it not be Afghanistan.
Alright, level with us Fist. Are you KenM, or is he just your primary inspiration?
I'm a broad thinker. (And by that I mean I'm usually thinking about broads, am I right, fellas?)
Bruce Jenner was born in the USA. He was not born abroad.
How dare you take my earnest comment and turn it into a joke.
Of all of the options available to you, why do you think that you chose Earnest?
Speaking of Trump... the next time some super-Prog makes noise about California seceding, he should through his full support behind the project. It'll be fun to see how they take that. Probably claim he's attacking them through supporting them.
Not *through... but *throw
I can tell you right now. We will be tearing down all statues that remind us of those treasonous Californians after President Donald Trump defeats Governor Moonbeam on the field of battle.
Ed, these links are downright Rootian with their depressing subject matter.
Have a total eclipse of the heart for Ed today.
That advice has pros and carnes.
President Trump will address the nation on the war in Afghanistan tonight; he is expected to announce a troop surge.
Third time's the charm?
If you count the British and Russian troop surge in Afghanistan, it would be 5th times a charm.
North Korea threatened a "second Korean war" over planned U.S.-South Korea computer simulation war games.
How about a nice game of Gangnam Style?
The only way to win is to not watch that crap.
You two....
How about a nice game of chess?
Ten sailors are missing after the U.S.S. John S. McCain collided with a merchant vessel off the coast of Singapore.
If you name a ship after that fucker of COURSE it's gonna wreck.
Why do Asians keep insisting on putting their merchant ships in the same shipping lanes as our Navy?
We tried'a turn right cap'n, but she kept'a veerin' left....
Wait, what? A total solar eclipse today? How has this not been all over the news?
Oh, right, it has been. So the links are not so much about 'news' as they are about 'olds'. Explains a lot, really.
Not only that. Some schools are keeping kids in school after normal release times to "protect" them from looking at the Sun. Nanny-State at the ready!
Really? That's ridiculous.
Ridiculous that schools are even in session, right?
That too.
Among the many ridiculous things- yes.
You just wait. I predict a flood of idiots with toasty retinas in a few hours. If I was a school administrator I'd keep them inside too. It's simply prudent in loco parentis. Imagine the shit storm if one child's vision is damaged.
Keeping them after normal school hours is the part I object to. Schools are acting like their "in loco parentis" powers and duties apply to kids' whole lives.
And why don't they call it 'Roundtine'?
Police in Barcelona are still looking for the alleged driver behind last week's van attack.
Not for nuttin, but shouldn't they be lookin for the actual driver?
I think Krayewski's anti-cop bias is seeping into his Links!
One of my favorite newsisms is "alleged suspect."
Is there a chance the van had no driver at all?
North Korea threatened a "second Korean war" over planned U.S.-South Korea computer simulation war games.
Starcraft?
How many North Koreans will be sent to Zerg the mine field before the good units are sent in?
As many as it takes. That is just how the People's Army rolls.
It's Zerglings all the way. I don't think the Norks even have Hydralisk capability yet.
They're upset that their best computers can still barely run Dune 2.
...the U.S.S. John S. McCain collided with a merchant vessel off the coast of Singapore.
This is what you get when you name something after a maverick.
I thought for sure it would be a train that crashed because McCain is such a train wreck.
Is thst ship named after the senator or his fsther, the admirsl?
His pappy and grandpappy. It's named after two people.
Were his daddy and granddaddy also known as mavericks?
Sure, why not.
Nah. One was a straight-shooter who didn't take any guff, the other was hard but fair and didn't cut any slack.
Ten sailors are missing after the U.S.S. John S. McCain collided with a merchant vessel off the coast of Singapore.
Even the fucking boat is senile!
Police in Barcelona are still looking for the alleged driver behind last week's van attack.
They should be looking for the actual driver.
Wouldn't it be easier to just grab some random guy with a record and plant a van on him?
This isn't Baltimore, dude. There are rules.
I was out on vacation all last week so i'm gonna just assume that most of y'all had absolutely the dumbest shit possible to say about Charlottesville, and then we can all move on.
Close enough for H&R.
They were the best discussions. You should read them all.
Nah, dude.
Actually, it was the smartest comments evah. Coincidence?
This is how people can tell you are a liar.
Who doesn't love rehashing the Civil War for the millionth time?
I think that politicians of all stripes have nearly all of the H&R comentariat beat for dumbness of comments.
No one cares.
"I was out on vacation all last week so i'm gonna just assume . . ."
Wait a minute. Are you saying that you get paid to comment here?
I ain't go nowhere 'less i gets paid, son.
So, who are you? Did you go by a different name before?
I ask, becaise I've been commenting here for 12 years and I don't have any idea who you are.
I've been on here since 2008 (formerly as Xeones) and i don't know who you are either. But that misses the point of my original post, which was not to talk about being on vacation, but to call a bunch of other commenters dumb.
Ok, so I was right and you're nobody.
You must have been one of the dumb ones.
Dumb shit, but dumbest possible?
OK, maybe.
In my opinion, the best part is SIV was obsessed with the fact that the news kept identifying the car used as a Dodge Charger while it was actually a Dodge Challenger. As far as I can tell, every post he made was on fighting this fake news.
I was really pressed with him. And I was proud to stand with SIV in that hill.
he is expected to announce a troop surge.
I've obtained video of the announcement: https://youtu.be/CTY8hrvFck8?t=12
Mudslides in Sierra Leone have killed almost 500 people.
Bad batch of Kahlua, huh?
Careful man, there's a beverage here.
I think the eclipse is just viral marketing for Rings.
...he is expected to announce a troop surge.
From the same media that brought you Hillary's electoral victory by 20 points.
he is expected to announce a troop surge
Fuck, I hope not. That shit didn't work before, why would this time be any different?
Because we've learned so much from our long history of repeated failures.
Enjoy every surge.
I'm so old that I remember the whole world shaking its head in condescension at the stupidity of Russia invading Afghanistan and fighting an un-winable war. Now if Putin keeps his athletes home for the next Summer Olympics, we can come full circle.
LOL I remember that too, I was in the Navy at the time. IIRC that was around the time Carter brought back draft registration. The San Diego radio stations were playing a spoof version of "I like the night life baby" as "We brought the draft back baby".
It seems to be popular to do. That supercedes any morality.
Mudslides in Sierra Leone have killed almost 500 people.
Note to self: don't build house at the bottom of a giant pile of mud.
But, it wasn't mud when they first bought the place. Back then it was just dirt. Then the water started moving in and the neighborhood just went downhill fast.
Buttmud brooks to the rescue?
Any of you deviants know a better libertarian website out there? I saw two Chapman articles in a row and hit my Reason threshold for the year.
Lewrockwell.com
https://www.lewrockwell.com/2017/08/ luis-p-almeida/were-all-racists-now/
Excellent, I like this site.
fee.org/articles is my goto site
ericpetersautos.com is my second choice
Hit N Run is well down the list -- most days I don't get to it at all
Nice, thanks.
Wtf is going on with the navy? I'd think that a ship getting within 1/2 a mile would cause alarms and shit. Don't they have any old fashioned eyeballs out there?
On other topics, some alt-right web sites are disappearing. Of course none of the alt-left CNN quality "journalist" at Reason will be covering this most un-libertarian squelching of speech. To busy virtue signaling to get invited to Antifa parties I guess.
The US Navy ship collisions are occurring in high sea traffic areas so ships are close and radar is not very helpful. There are supposed to be sailors on watch as lookouts. These seems like 100% preventable collisions.
Totes obvs that TReason hates freedom because they won't talk about websites. Totes obvs.
Google is employing hit squads to go after anyone on the fake list of "hate groups" put out by SPLC. It's really quite amazing. Of course they pull the same s--t in every other country that has zero freedom of speech but to see it here is just remarkable.
Great strategy by Google to try and distract everyone' attention from Google's problems.
We still have freedom of speech here, it's just that hate speech is not free speech. Or as Trump put it, we need to loosen up the laws a little so he can go after people who say mean things. For some reason the Left supports Trump having the power to silence certain people, seems to think they and Trump have enemies in common they'd both like to see silenced. Do they know something we don't?
Shame....
Shame....
shame.....
shame.....
Nation of Islam and New Black Panthers web sites coming down too?
Don't be silly.
They have covered it.
Not good enough, Zeb. They aren't covering it RIGHT NOW with a full list of all of the sites that have been blacklisted and the hosting companies that dumped them.
Wouldn't it be funny if most Americans dumped Google as their search engine?
Nope.
I gotta duck duck go!
Still not funny.
Bing! You win today's comments.
I use Bing because they pay me to use it. It's nice.
The problem here is the quality of the other offerings. DDG is shite - half the time I end up on Google anyway - and they have *ad* links to phishing sites. You'd think they'd be able to get a handle on who's paying them.
And what is it you're doing?
Singapore (and the place the previous collision happened) is *massively* high traffic area. You couldn't come with 50 miles of the place if you wanted a half-mile exclusion zone.
Still, thousands of ships make that transit every year without hitting each other.
So is it unusual or is it just an unfortunate accident? Millions of cars make their trips every year, but some crash and people die. Is this event just the ship version of this or something unusual?
he is expected to announce a troop surge.
Who is doing this expectation?
Anyone expecting him to drop trou and resign?
The United States will experience the first total solar eclipse over the country in nearly 40 years.
We blaming Trump or global warming?
In other eclipse news, as I was headed home last night listening to the radio and the 12 millionth warning that looking at the Sun for even a second can nuke your eyeballs, I turned the corner headed West, directly toward the setting Sun. Before I could flip the sun visor down, I caught a quick glimpse of the Sun and, boom, eyeball goo all over the inside of my truck. I hate when that happens.
Now try that at 2 in the afternoon.
Sneak a peek at the setting Sun at 2 in the afternoon? Where the hell do you think I am that the Sun sets at 2 in the afternoon? At 2 p.m. the Sun's high in the sky, but I'll still go look at it for a few seconds. Staring directly at the Sun for 20 minutes or so probably isn't a good idea, but a quick glance is about as dangerous as leaving your sleeping baby unattended in his crib while you step out the door to pick up the newspaper off the front porch. Which is, I'm sure, cause for arrest on child endangerment charges in some places. Not even for one second!
Staring at the sun (high in the sky) for 10 seconds is a bad idea. Fortunately, it's extremely uncomfortable to do so.
While that's true, it's quite clearly not what he said he did.
Thanks though, you told us something we all knew already, but we still need you surrogate moms out there scolding us for no reason and misunderstanding so you can lecture.
we still need you surrogate moms out there scolding us for no reason and misunderstanding so you can lecture.
But that was something that really needed to be said.
I think that everyone also knows that looking at the sunset is different from looking at the midday sun.
we still need you surrogate moms out there scolding us for no reason and misunderstanding so you can lecture.
Oh snap, Zeb. You got TOLD! And by a new guy even.
Who wants to bet that out of work "scientists" will want to spend taxpayer money doing a study on how many eyeballs were affected by ECLIPSE 2017 and then a law will be created to protect people from such a light menace?
What are they going to do, change the moon's orbit by government decree?
Sarcasm only proves that you hate Teh Chrildrens' retinas, Zeb.
Sarcasm? What sarcasm?
"It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people. Presumably, this is not explained by the implicit bias of the solar system. It is a matter of population density, and more specifically geographic variations in population density by race, for which the sun and the moon cannot be held responsible. Still, an eclipse chaser is always tempted to believe that the skies are relaying a message."
"Oregon, where this begins, is almost entirely white. The 10 percent or so of state residents who do not identify as white are predominantly Latino, American Indian, Alaskan, or Asian."
I'm incompetent at posting links. Entire column is at The Atlantic, and the author is Alice Ristroph if you want to DDG it.
Blatant displays of abject stupidity are God's sarcasm.
Pithy, thought-provoking, and humorous. I like it.
I also hate it when my eyeballs melt out from seeing the sun. I've gone through about a dozen pairs so far.
I know this is supposed to be a scientific fact, but I also know that when I was a kid my friends and I would stare at the sun for the hell of it. We'd always naturally look away after a while, because there's an instinct that kicks in. I have no damage at all to my retinas.
Leading up to today's eclipse, my son told us that his friends and he sometimes stare at the sun on purpose out on the elementary school playground.
Anyway, I'll be careful. And I'm volunteering to keep a whole classroom of second graders safe, but in my heart I wonder if everybody is all worked up over something that has been built up way beyond the actual risks.
Maybe it is overblown. But it certainly feels damaging when I accidentally look directly at the sun in a clear sky (or forget to set my welding helmet to the appropriate setting adn get some arc exposure).
I went outside for the eclipse. It got noticeably cooler, and it was only 60 percent around here. Why can't we just park the moon there permanently to help fight global warming? It would be a lot quicker than cutting carbon emissions.
Could you imagine the fights over how much of an eclipse to dial in? It would be like the home or office thermostat times eleventy squared.
Someone ought to ask @neiltyson how much money the government is planning to spend on "common sense" eclipse controls.
They should just declare marshall law for the duration of the eclipse and confine everyone to their homes.
WOULD YOU STOP GIVING THEM IDEAS!
Why do you want children to go blind?
TOO LATE!
The Oregon National Guard was called in to Madras
They'll need to martial as many troops as they can for that kind of exercise.
You know, I really went out of my way to misspell that. Thank you for noticing.
President Trump will address the nation on the war in Afghanistan tonight
Lefties will all the sudden discover that US involvement in the middle-east is still occurring and is bad.
It's especially bad spending money we don't have on foreign wars when we have the Homelessness Crisis? here to deal with. Trump doesn't even care about the homeless!
North Korea threatened a "second Korean war" over planned U.S.-South Korea computer simulation war games.
Technically the first one is ongoing, right? Anyway, the only way to win is not to play.
Mudslides in Sierra Leone have killed almost 500 people.
I usually just get a headache from all the sugar.
Police in Barcelona are still looking for the alleged driver behind last week's van attack.
Oh, I think we know who done it.
The United States will experience the first total solar eclipse over the country in nearly 40 years.
It's a sign of the end times.
The video for Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart is a wild ride.
-1 falling in love
+1 falling apart
The "Literal Music Video" version is hilarious too.
Argh. Why is there a ship named after McCain??? Couldn't they at least wait until he's officially dead?
There have been a lot of John S. McCains in the navy. The ship is named after the senator's father and/or grandfather who were both admirals.
Nooooooooo. No. No.
Did they pick one, or do they have to share it?
North Korea threatened a "second Korean war" over planned U.S.-South Korea computer simulation war games.
How will they even know the war games have been carried out?
very nice post. I like it. Thanks for sharing this information.
