Making it clear that President Donald Trump's tweets technically don't count as policy changes, the chairman of Joint Chiefs of staff sent out a memo to military leaders telling them there will be no changes to the current policy on how transgender troops are to be treated.

  • The head of the Boy Scouts is apologizing for the political rhetoric Trump brought up in his speech at their National Jamboree. Frankly, it's never too early for children to learn that politicians are the worst.
  • Officials are investigating Mississippi police officers who fatally shot a man over the weekend after serving a search warrant at the wrong address.
  • Vladimir Putin says the sanctions bill against Russia currently under consideration by Congress is "illegal under international law."
  • Here's the latest on what's in the "skinny repeal" of the Affordable Care Act. It includes the individual mandate repeal and defunds Planned Parenthood for one year. It does not repeal ACA's medical device tax.
  • One person died and seven were injured when a ride at the Ohio State Fair broke apart during operations. All the rides at the fair are now closed for inspections.

Thank you for leading me to my afternoon entertainment .... pizzagate ...

In a statement, Awan's lawyer said his client wasn't fleeing the country, but going to stay with family in Pakistan after being "unjustly fired" and enduring harassment from "extremist right-wing bloggers."

"For months we have had utterly unsupported, outlandish, and slanderous statements targeting Mr. Awan coming not just from the ultra-right-wing 'pizzagate' media," the statement said.

Removing federal funding from groups like PP should be considered a win, regardless, no?

I hope we can all agree on that, regardless of our views on PP's mission and services provided.

Same for groups unlike PP. I don't think that the federal government should be funding anything other than the federal government's constitutionally permitted functions. And I'm not even sure about that.

The CPSC said it is aware of 22 deaths associated with amusement attractions since 2010 including Wednesday's incident, but excluding water park and work-related fatalities.

The CPSC estimates there were 30,900 injuries "associated with amusement attractions" at emergency rooms in 2016 -- a 14.2 percent increase since 2013, which saw 27,054 such injuries.

    3. Conchfritters   8 years ago

I thought that was the whole fun of going on carnival rides at the fair - the element of death is actually in play. I grew up going to the Iowa State fair (I lived in Des Moines) and most of the rides were patched together with duct tape - never stopped us from riding.

The head of the Boy Scouts is apologizing for the political rhetoric Trump brought up in his speech at their National Jamboree.

I'm putting my "what did they expect?" face while resting my knuckles on my hips...

The head of the BSA should consider reviewing the footage of the rally again because if there was one thing to worry about more thqn the orange man's speech was the environment of chauvinism one could breathe while standing in that crowd.

Frankly, it's never too early for children to learn that politicians are the worst.

To be fair, the Boy Scouts were kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place here.

Inviting him was a bad idea, but they always invite the president, so not inviting him would also have been a bad idea.

      1. mad.casual   8 years ago

I don't know what exact time the speech happened, but I got the 'National Jamboree Presidential Visit Response' email promptly enough saying pretty much exactly what you said that it seemed almost like they were apologizing in advance.

Isn't transgenderism already thwarted by military dress codes?
What soldiers do in their off-time is their business, but you don't go to battle in a skirt.
Actually, we should change that to allow camo utili-kilts and thus negate the issue. Trans-women can just wear a kilt and grow their hair long and nobody will be able to tell if they're transexual or just hip.

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

The only guy i know who wears a utilikilt also rides a recumbent bike. It's not a great combo.

      1. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

Isn't transgenderism already thwarted by military dress codes?
What soldiers do in their off-time is their business, but you don't go to battle in a skirt.

A significant portion of the problem is that our military and military fighting in general is so fractionally composed of 'going into battle'. Apparently, plenty of libertarians are adamant supporters of a man's ability to wear a skirt while filing his dronessassination paperwork.

      1. Zeb   8 years ago

Maybe they should just hire civilians to do the office work. Of course then there might be retention problems when you can't arrest them for being AWOL.

        1. mad.casual   8 years ago

I'm still astounded that the "How about we go back to not dronessassinating people?" ship seems to have thoroughly sailed even among libertarians. I thought it was a great hill but, apparently, it's just me and a bunch of cis-het shitlord corpses.

          1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Certain men are evil and I care not how they receive their well deserved death; minus torture, which is the only situation which can be aptly said to 'bring us down to their level.'

          2. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

My biggest issue is why we are killing all these people at all. I have no strong opinion on drones. Though I've read that tend to have significantly more innocent casualties. Though, try to get anyone to give a shit about killing people on the other side of the world.

It bothers me that when the topic of the wars come up it's mostly people complaining about monetary cost. Shit. That matters, but that really is secondary to murdering people.

          3. Zeb   8 years ago

I was not addressing the drone issue one way or another.

    3. Mickey Rat   8 years ago

There are some problems with integrating transgenders into the military. Like, what physical training srasndard are they expected to meet (since there is a difference in standards and potential between the sexes). Will opposite sex personnel be required to bunk with them and share open facilities?

      1. Elias Fakaname   8 years ago

Tip of the iceberg. Just keep them out.

    4. Longtobefree   8 years ago

I know several Highland Regiments that disagree with you.

  17. FreeRadical   8 years ago

I'm not sure what my opinion is on the transgender military issue.

But what interests and confounds me is why we have this sudden (well, the last 2 years) obsession with trans people.
The left is completely addicted to the idea of riding a victim group for all it's worth, but this seems to be going on and on.

I have actual questions that I am asking in good faith: why is being transgender considered normal? If you are one sex but have an overwhelming feeling that you are the opposite gender from your sex, isn't that a problem? Isn't that a disturbance of some kind? Why do the psychological elites work so hard to write definitions to make sure it isn't considered a disorder? It seems like a lot of trans people have real problems from it.

Many people are in the military with various conditions. All that matters is being able to carry out the mission. Does being transgender affect the mission? I was in the military and it seems like it could in some cases and not in others.

    1. Zeb   8 years ago

I decided that I just can't be bothered to have an opinion on it. The military is a necessary evil. But it's still an evil. So I'm not going to get bogged down in whether our band of hired killers treats people with complete fairness and compassion. That's not really the point.

    2. Zeb   8 years ago

I've got similar questions about the whole trans thing, though. It doesn't seem like just another lifestyle option like being gay. There's really something wrong there. I'm all for being nice and accommodating if that seems like the best thing for people like that (but I'm not going to pretend I know what really is the best way to deal with it). But it is really weird that it's become such a big issue all of a sudden in the past few years.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I also think its weird that it has been lumped in so hard with homosexuality. They seem like they're not even on the same scale. One is who you're attracted to, the other is something about how one feels about their own sex. Seems very different to me.
I find it very interesting that people pushing this openly label people as trans, when that actually seems to be against their wishes.

If you really want it I can hunt down some research about how to best deal with things. Though, it has become a very politicized thing lately.

I don't know why its become such a big deal either though. I think maybe it's because Gay/Lesbian issues are largely decided, so groups who spend their time being indignant need a new hobby horse to ride. The other thing might be that gender issues (gender in this case referring to gender roles) have become prominent and perhaps nothing strikes at the heart of that as much as transsexualism.

Most of this is just conjecture though. So fuck me.

    3. Cynical Asshole   8 years ago

But what interests and confounds me is why we have this sudden (well, the last 2 years) obsession with trans people.

Probably has something to do with Kaitlyn Jenner. A really famous man became an even more famous woman so that's gotten a lot of attention on transgender people. Because nobody gives a shit about things like that until it effects a celebrity.

      1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

^this I reckon -- movements need leaders, figureheads, martyrs. Jenner is something they didn't have before. Changed the dialogue.

      2. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Perhaps I have a skewed view, but this has become a big thing well before Jenner. Maybe it's just the circles I run in, but Jenner just sort of happened in the middle.

    4. ChipToBeSquare   8 years ago

The reason it became an obsession is because the left moves at breakneck speed on social and cultural issues, and of course as life for everybody improves immensely over time, the complaints start to be over smaller and smaller things. Once they get their victory on one topic, they immediately jump to the next one and are able to dictate the terms of the next debate. The right is still fuming about wedding cakes, but the left is already going full court press on adding in new pronouns and bathrooms

I think it worked for them in the past, like on gay marriage, but the Trump phenomenon is definitely some degree of blowback from this strategy. I'm not sure they'll be able to jump from this trans thing as quickly as they want to, plus they're even having to debate abortion again

    5. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

The thing with Trans is it ain't going away so you're left with two options:

      1) Final Solution -- messy, evil, doesn't work (humans are cockroaches)

      2) General Acceptance -- be done with it, their numbers will never be great.

He knows too much and speaks too plainly; not a lurker but a name changer I reckon. O.o

            1. Telcontar the Wanderer   8 years ago

No, that would be my untreated Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in action. I have been a lurker since spring of 2016; Trump's candidacy, and especially the trade and immigration debates it spawned, caused me to become interested in politics, which led me to libertarianism/minarchism, and then to this... "place" (Hive? Lair? Flophouse?).

And thank you, Mr. Morning, but I assure you I always come well, so you didn't need to specify.

              1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

In that case, welcome to the party! It's BYOB (obviously) -- don't share drinks with Crusty :p

              2. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

which led me... to this... "place" (Hive? Lair? Flophouse?).

The correct answer is: area with one hundred individual front lawns which nobody can step on without getting yelled at.

                1. Telcontar the Wanderer   8 years ago

So, "Liz Warren's Special Corner of Hell", in other words. I will roll with it, when I show up, which will likely be inconsistent.

    2. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

I think LC's a parody account. And occasionally it does good work, as in the Dunkirk review.

      1. Zeb   8 years ago

If that was performance art, it was pretty good. I have my doubts, though.

      2. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

Yeah, he had some good ones in the AM thread as well. Any guesses on who it is?

      3. Cynical Asshole   8 years ago

I especially thought it was funny when it started just accusing everyone who disagreed with its review of Loder's review a "cuck" and "TDS." Comedy. Gold.

      4. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

If it's trolling, then they successfully trolled me.

    3. Ska   8 years ago

I should really thank you - absolutely was worth checking at that thread.

        Seconded. That was a delight.

[100+ increasingly bitchy comments from Tony, lc1789 publicly shitting himself]

Must be a day that ends in y.

    5. ChipToBeSquare   8 years ago

This is one of my favorite things about Tony:

"Hey Middle America, you're all a bunch of cousin-fucking retards"

"Wait why are you voting for the other party? We're the party of the working man, not them!"

      1. mad.casual   8 years ago

        This underplays his oxymoronic and tautological abilities. Put them both together in one sentence or concept, then you've got something much more like it;

Hillary lost because the cousin-fucking retards in Middle America wouldn't vote for a Democrat.

Socialism would work if you soulless libertarians would just muster up some compassion for the have nots and treat everyone as equals.

        1. ChipToBeSquare   8 years ago

Tony's never shilled directly for socialism

Of course, he also has a real problem with how the free market prices most goods and services

  19. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

Here's the latest on what's in the "skinny repeal" of the Affordable Care Act. It includes the individual mandate repeal and defunds Planned Parenthood for one year. It does not repeal ACA's medical device tax.

    *facepalm*

    1. Mickey Rat   8 years ago

The sure way to make health care less expensive is to impose artificial costs on medical equipment.

At least there are adults back in the White House: Anthony Scaramucci Called Me to Unload About White House Leakers, Reince Priebus, and Steve Bannon

I asked him why it was so important for the dinner to be kept a secret. Surely, I said, it would become public at some point. "I've asked people not to leak things for a period of time and give me a honeymoon period," he said. "They won't do it." He was getting more and more worked up, and he eventually convinced himself that Priebus was my source.

"They'll all be fired by me," he said. "I fired one guy the other day. I have three to four people I'll fire tomorrow. I'll get to the person who leaked that to you. Reince Priebus?if you want to leak something?he'll be asked to resign very shortly." The issue, he said, was that he believed Priebus had been worried about the dinner because he hadn't been invited. "Reince is a fucking paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac," Scaramucci said. He channelled Priebus as he spoke: " 'Oh, Bill Shine is coming in. Let me leak the fucking thing and see if I can cock-block these people the way I cock-blocked Scaramucci for six months.' " (Priebus did not respond to a request for comment.)

    1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

caramucci was particularly incensed by a Politico report about his financial-disclosure form, which he viewed as an illegal act of retaliation by Priebus. The reporter said Thursday morning that the document was publicly available and she had obtained it from the Export-Import Bank. Scaramucci didn't know this at the time, and he insisted to me that Priebus had leaked the document, and that the act was "a felony."

"I've called the F.B.I. and the Department of Justice," he told me.

      "Are you serious?" I asked.

"The swamp will not defeat him," he said, breaking into the third person. "They're trying to resist me, but it's not going to work. I've done nothing wrong on my financial disclosures, so they're going to have to go fuck themselves."

Scaramucci also told me that, unlike other senior officials, he had no interest in media attention. "I'm not Steve Bannon, I'm not trying to suck my own cock," he said, speaking of Trump's chief strategist. "I'm not trying to build my own brand off the fucking strength of the President. I'm here to serve the country." (Bannon declined to comment.)

Freaking awesome. Trump hit a homerun with this appointment.

        1. Stormy Dragon   8 years ago

          You misspelled "freaking hilarious".

          1. MarkLastname   8 years ago

Same thing, to those of us who view politics as a spectator sport.

      2. EscherEnigma   8 years ago

I've never understood using auto-fellatio references in a derogatory way. Maybe it's envy? Face it, most guys that can do that are either very flexible or very well endowed. I hear that a guy can pull that off and I'm not "oh, he's a horrible self-absorbed person", I'm "awesome dude".

That said, I've heard it said that it's something like tickling yourself. Not as fun as either tickling, or being tickled. So it makes for a neat trick, but it's more a performance thing then something you do for your own pleasure.

        1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I'm iffy on blowjobs in general. I certainly wouldn't want to also do all that extra work myself.

        2. MarkLastname   8 years ago

The implication is that, if you have any worth, someone else will happily such it for you.

      3. Telcontar the Wanderer   8 years ago

Oh, SNL needs to find someone special for this guy...

Anthony Garcia? Al Pacino? No, I guess he's too old now... Oscar Isaac (the guy who plays the X-wing pilot in Star Wars Ep 7) looks a lot like him, but I don't know if he's funny enough...

I'm definitely thinking "Sopranos supporting character" should be their starting point.

        1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

I thought a cast member of the Jersey Shore could have sufficed.

          1. Telcontar the Wanderer   8 years ago

I am proud to say I have no knowledge of that show whatsoever.

Anyway, they need to have someone who can play "Don-Corleone-type mafia don": all suave and personable at first, but then pulls out an M1928 and strafes the press room.

            Complete with fedora, natch.

The head of the Boy Scouts is apologizing for the political rhetoric Trump brought up in his speech at their National Jamboree.

I wonder, does Trump actually have any speech writers? If so, is this what they're actually writing for him, or is he just going off script?

If the later, I'd love to see comparisons between what he was supposed to be saying at things like this and what he actually says.

    1. mad.casual   8 years ago

I wonder, does Trump actually have any speech writers? If so, is this what they're actually writing for him, or is he just going off script?

The latter would go a long way towards explaining stuff like "Who's doing all the leaking?" Otherwise, you're next job interview is going to consist of hours and hours of explaining what, exactly, you did and didn't write.

    2. ChipToBeSquare   8 years ago

You can usually tell when he's off script and when he's just reading. When he's reading, he'll sometimes say something like "That's true, isn't it?", as though he just read the line for the first time

      1. EscherEnigma   8 years ago

It was particularly noticeable towards the end of the election campaign. But I haven't noticed it too much since he was elected. I think he may have said "I won, so I don't have to stay on-script anymore".

      2. MarkLastname   8 years ago

He's having a dialogue with his own script. Trump is a Derridean deconstructionist.

  22. Longtobefree   8 years ago

The head of the Boy Scouts is apologizing for the political rhetoric Trump brought up in his speech at their National Jamboree.

Says the guy in charge of an organization who went all political on the gay rights thing.

"Never apologize Mister, it's a sign of weakness."

  23. Bearded Spock   8 years ago

"...the chairman of Joint Chiefs of staff sent out a memo to military leaders telling them there will be no changes to the current policy on how transgender troops are to be treated."

Lol, did you even read the article, Shackford? It said there would be no changes UNTIL an official policy was prepared by the SecDef, not that there would be no changes, period.

I've noticed today a lot of the Left and Media have been indulging in wishful thinking that somehow Trump can't do this by himself, he needs "permission" from the military brass, and his tweet was irrelevant. Well, as CinC, yes, he can (what a slogan!) do this -- just as his predecessor used his authority to unilaterally push the current policy through a year ago.

In a way, this is a brilliant move by Trump: he has killed the policy by simply tweeting the announcement it was over. Yes, yes, we know it won't officially go away until the requisite paperwork is completed, but the trans policy is as dead as Bin Laden.

If Trump had left it up to the JCS they would have dragged their feet and taken months or years to come up with a new policy. By simply announcing it was rescinded, he has put the onus on the JCS to create a new policy ASAP. Meanwhile, most trans recruits will not sign up, knowing they won't be able to serve, while those currently serving won't re-up, knowing they will not likely be able to complete their enlistment.
