...President Donald Trump attacked Attorney General Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from the Russia investigation.

Unfortunately, now he can't fire him. OR CAN HE?

That depends. Will he fit in the cannon?

    Hit'n'Run commenters blamed in 3, 2...

    1. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

To be fair, the comments here are pretty cancerous sometimes.

      1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

It's a legit worry. The Preet Incident was not that long ago, and some of the commenters whose identities he was after did nothing more than speculate on the final eternal destination of certain unlovable public figures. Nobody here has ever had anything nice to say about McCain, that's for sure.

        1. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

To remedy this, I will say something nice about McCain:

          He's not Clinton.

          1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

            That's a low bar.

          2. Eek Barba Durkle   8 years ago

An army friend of mine got The Medal a few years back, and Jake Tapper hosted a reunion for us the night before up in DC. McCain and his wife were there, and I ended up chatting with them for a while. They were both extremely gracious and kind. It was more than a little bit surreal when he asked where we served, and I told him Sadr City, and he gave me a "oh man, that's terrible' facial expression...and I'm just like "I mean, no one tortured me or broke my arms or anything."

The best part of the conversation is when he asked me what I did for a living, and I told him that I ran an LLC that covered MMA through radio, web and print...and things got awkward for a minute. If you've followed MMA for any length of time, you get why that's funny.

Anyway, long story short, he and his wife were both exceedingly kind and warm people that night. Doesn't quite mitigate decades of foreign and domestic policy that resulted in millions upon millions of dead and suffering innocents, but at least I can say something nice about him before Jesus bombs his brain.

            1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Evidence suggests that one-on-one most politicians are kind, gracious people. It's how they get to power in the first place.

            2. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

As a Gracie might say, pretty much what we expected.

About the MMA thing: I remember years ago my sister being kind of surprised and amused why I wasn't a fan of his at the time (over the *ahem* "human cockfighting" thing) and explaining that this kind of single issue voter is exactly the sort of thing that drives pollsters crazy.

McCain is so selfish to not have resigned his Senate seat when he was sick.

Instead he acts crazy, refuses to just repeal ObamaCare, refuses to push for tax reform, and pushes for war with Iran and Russia.

Yeah, I mean I honestly can't tell a difference before and 'after' brain cancer was confirmed. I feel bad for the guy on a human level, but on the political level I can't help but think 'good riddance'.

I hope he has the decency to retire. What will happen is he will cling to office until his death, and many people will claim him a hero for doing so.

I do not wish for his death, but I wish for Arizona to have a different Senator. I like Flake enough, so hopefully the next one we choose is pretty good too.

    4. Griffin3   8 years ago

My RL mother got crazier and crazier for 10 years, and then was diagnosed with brain cancer. I secretly expected this of McCain ... and Maxine Waters. And possibly Pelosi, but I really just think the debt on her bartered soul has come due.

911 call transcript offers glimpse into Justine Damond's final moments before fatal shooting by Minneapolis police

Justine Damond spent her last moments trying to help a stranger.

At 11:27 p.m. Saturday, Damond called police to report a possible sexual assault, according to a 911 transcript obtained by the Star Tribune Wednesday, later published by the city of Minneapolis.

"I'm not sure if she's having sex or being raped," Damond told the operator. After giving her address in the quiet Fulton neighborhood, Damond continued: "I think she just yelled out 'help,' but it's difficult the sound has been going on for a while, but I think, I don't think she's enjoying it."

"OK," said the operator, "I've already got an officer on the way."

Stop fucking in public, people. Unless this was an assault, then, you know, stop doing that, too.

    1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

Officer Matthew Harrity, who was driving, and Noor, in the front passenger seat, arrived at the scene. They drove south through the alley between Washburn and Xerxes avenues S., toward W. 51st Street, with the squad lights turned off. As they reached the street, "Harrity indicated that he was startled by a loud sound near the squad," according to the preliminary BCA investigation.

Damond approached the driver's side window of the squad car "immediately afterward," according to the statement. Noor shot from the passenger seat, across his partner and through the window, striking Damond in the abdomen. She died at the scene 20 minutes later.

A State Police spokesman would not clarify what the noise Harrity heard may have been, but Harrity's attorney hinted that the officers may have believed they were driving into an ambush.

      1. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

Meanwhile, the caller may not have believed she was walking into an ambush,

        1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

That's something i think we're all going to have to assume when dealing with cops.

      2. Conchfritters   8 years ago

Driving into an ambush? On Xerxes Ave in that neighborhood? Are they fucking nuts? I read somewhere else that kids were lighting fireworks in the neighborhood, and the officers thought it was gun fire. Mark my words, these homocidal murders will walk free.

        1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

It will be interesting to see how they try to explain away shooting through the window.

      3. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Here is the situation as I imagine it played out:

Minority hire touted by the mayor, giving the hint of special status. Culture of officer safety above all else promoted by trainers, superiors and colleagues, as well as the notion of "us vs. them" war on the streets between police and everyone else. In the spotlight of an international incident involving the most sympathetic of victims, police department and mayor's office hit square in the face with the changing perceptions of what is acceptable behavior with police violence. Usual playbook not working leaving everyone clueless what to do next. Somali-American shooter feeling suddenly isolated in complete opposition to stories of blue brotherhood, and begins drawing his race card.

Here is what I imagine will happen:

When no drugs are found in the victim's system, police officers will plead that they were fearful of their lives and, after sufficient time for the interest to die down, no charges will be filed. Officers will be terminated for breaking body camera policy. Officers will appeal and be reinstated.

It should noted that the investigation is off to a bad start, as the shooter has declined to be interviewed, which is apparently something some of us can do when we shoot someone to death.

        1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

Yes, the investigators have been stymied by a lack of information.

          1. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

A mystery worthy of Sherlock, to be sure.

          2. Zeb   8 years ago

I imagine Noor's lawyer told him it doesn't look good so keep your mouth shut tight. Which I'm sure is the appropriate legal advice. But if they haven't even tried to interview/interrogate him, that's a bit effed (and also not too surprising).

            1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

More information, some of which you probably knew, some of which was new to me:

When it comes to talking to authorities, defense attorneys and legal experts said police officers have the same Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination as everyone else.

"Any lawyer that would recommend to him that he should give a statement to the BCA should be disbarred," said Joe Friedberg, a Minneapolis defense attorney who's not involved in the case. "Nobody should ever speak to law enforcement when they're the subject of a criminal investigation."

The police department's internal affairs unit can compel Noor to give a statement as part of its own investigation, and fire him if he refuses, but that statement cannot be used against him in any criminal investigation, Friedberg said.

              That last line...

              1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

                Also:

Television station KSTP, citing a source it did not name, said the two officers thought they were being targeted for an ambush when they heard a pounding noise on the driver's side. Noor had his gun on his lap.

David Klinger, a professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Missouri in St. Louis, said it would make no sense for Noor to have his gun out because it wasn't a "hot call," such as a report of shots fired. And it's also unusual, but not unheard of, for officers to turn their lights out to make a "dark and silent approach" if they're trying to conceal themselves, said Jens David Ohlin, vice dean of the Cornell Law School in Ithaca, New York.

              2. Zeb   8 years ago

It probably wouldn't solve anything, but I've often thought that perhaps when a local cop kills or injures someone under questionable circumstances the state police should do the investigation. Having their own department investigate seems like a conflict.
There's still the problem of police solidarity and "brotherhood" BS. But I've heard that state police often view local cops with some derision and contempt because they are often poorly trained and not too bright.

                1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

Or, have federal agents conduct the investigations, instead of chasing prostitutes and cigarette smugglers.

                2. BYODB   8 years ago

Not a bad idea, and it would give the State cops something to do that doesn't involve truckers.

                3. dschwar   8 years ago

There are two investigations going on: a criminal (or at least homicide) investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Affairs (a state agency and the one which has been providing most of the information) and the internal affairs / officer-involved shooting investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department (which hasn't yet determined whether the body cameras should have been on).

I fucking hate out media. Trump is fucking right sometimes.

Like Hollywood, they're writing for an international audience now.

        1. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

If he's from Somalia, shouldn't it be "Libertarian community braces for backlash" then?

But seriously, some assholes are already pushing a narrative about him, because things like this never happen with good ol' 100% American cops obviously, so they're not completely wrong in this case.

          1. Rhywun   8 years ago

Yes, a country of 325,000,000 is going to have a few assholes. But this bullshit about "Somali community braces for backlash"... that is the kind of thing that happens more in Europe or Asia than here, and they know it. A few random assholes is not a "backlash".

            1. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

Agreed about that much. If a yuge backlash of the the kind they always predict was going to happen, it would have happened by now.

              1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

"Bracing for backlash" is media speak for hoping there will be something bad to come to increase viewership.

Yeah, I was just kind of joking in the sense that the L.A. riots were real backlash. I don't think we'll see anything like that here though.

Urban Farming Gets New York City Council Attention

Mr. Espinal said a comprehensive food plan could lift restrictions, clarify regulations, and coordinate city efforts to encourage agriculture. It would create jobs, improve access to fresh food and help fight climate change by reducing carbon footprints associated with food transport, he said. "It would be a win, win, win across the board for the entire city."

Or... I could continue to live in the city and let people truck in fresh food to me like they do now, because I don't have a pathological aversion to trucks.

I am not sure what problem they're trying to solve here - especially since I don't subscribe to the WSJ - but sure, even hipster herb gardeners deserve less regulation just because. The handwaving about "food access" and "climate change" are lefty dog-whistles to get the rest of the idiots on board.

        2. Zeb   8 years ago

Allowing "urban farming" is definitely a good thing, if only because there is no good reason to restrict or regulate it. But it is ridiculous to think that a city like NY could be anything close to self-sustaining food-wise.

          1. BYODB   8 years ago

Yeah, I'm really not sure what the point of this is. There is zero chance NYC could be at all 'sustainable' with it's population density. The irony of that isn't lost on me, but I wager it's a mystery to most New Yorkers. The Irish side of my family never left, from what I understand, but I think they have 'business interests' there that I'd rather not know much about.

        3. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

I am not sure what problem they're trying to solve here

It's really not complicated - they want clarity and less restrictive regulations on where and how they can have growing facilities. The one person, for example, grows artisninal herbs. They aren't trying to feed the city, they're trying to start a business.

          1. Rhywun   8 years ago

All well and good. The nonsense about "carbon footprints" and such threw me is all.

            1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

Of course, but at the very least that shit is good marketing.

              1. BYODB   8 years ago

I'm not so sure about that. 'My herbs are grown in an ancient, disgusting mega-city' doesn't exactly make me want to buy their stuff. They're welcome to make a go of it though.

                1. Square = Circle   8 years ago

This is why you're not in marketing. The proper phrasing is "locally sourced."

          2. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

Oh, I'm in favor of all that. I'm just sure the city is going to find some dumbass way ruin it by making every pay through the nose for a special license or something.

And I'm equally sure the WSJ will never address the "why was the city ever cracking down on people for this to begin with" question.

            1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

They will regulate it to death immediately. It will be done under the guise of common sense guidelines. People will get fined, probably someone shot by police in the process of enforcing it.

              1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

That's what happened here in Norfolk when the city overhauled its backyard-chicken ban a few years ago (ironically, citing NYC's laissez-faire attitude toward chicken ownership). The new regulations were so difficult to comply with that, a year after they went into effect, exactly 0 people had filled out the ridiculously convoluted application form.

I take heart in noting that there are dozens of (presumably illegal) new coops in the city anyway.

President Trump rarely says he needs his hand held for anything. Unless he's around President Emmanuel Macron of France.

"He's a great guy ? smart, strong, loves holding my hand," Mr. Trump joked about his French counterpart in an Oval Office interview with The New York Times on Wednesday.

"People don't realize, he loves holding my hand ? that's good!" the president said of Mr. Macron, who invited Mr. Trump to attend Bastille Day festivities in Paris last week.

Is Rand Paul's Health-Care Stance Really Based on Principle?

. When touting your principles is a politically expedient way of avoiding accountability, it's hard to tell whether principles or expedience is in the driver's seat. But not impossible.

Let's wait till Ken Schulz gets here and ask him.

      1. BYODB   8 years ago

I'm sure Ken will tell us all about how Rand Paul is a traitor to the Republican Party United States of America.

I'm sure Ken believes Rand Paul is indeed a terrible person for not voting for this legislation that would have ultimately continued the trend of destroying the Insurance industry in preparation of single-payer health care.

He does believe in incrementalism though, so this isn't an irrational thought...from a certain point of view.

        1. Not a Libertarian   8 years ago

this legislation that would have ultimately continued the trend of destroying the Insurance industry in preparation of single-payer health care.

You don't believe that nationalized healthcare is inevitable in the next 5 years?

Single-Payer has become the default Democratic policy position.

And frankly GOP voters (if not politicians) are nearly evenly divided on the issue (or perhaps they see it as a fait accompli)

There won't be any Free Market Direction in Healthcare in the United States for the next 30-40 years.

I'm not sure what point National Review is making, but I think it's 'get in line' more than anything else. I'll concede that Ken could end up being correct when it comes to Paul being removed from office over this, but we'll see what Kentucky voters think about it soon enough.

What is the average time for sex? It's NOT as long as you think

A study published in 2008, titled 'Canadian and American Sex Therapists' Perceptions of Normal and Abnormal Ejaculatory Latencies: How Long Intercourse Last?', suggests an "adequate" time for sex to last is anywhere from three to seven minutes.

For the more ambitious, seven to 13 minutes was considered a "desirable" length of time.

A 2005 study specifically found that sex lasts 5.4 minutes on average, although the data does not consider foreplay, female orgasm or non-heterosexual pairings.

A big part of the "TDS" you love to crow about is the notion among lefties that Trump is doing anything remotely like "dismantling government".

I'm not saying he hasn't done anything at all that lovers of small government can be happy about. But those things are few and far between and don't demonstrate any consistent small government tendencies.

    2. Calidissident   8 years ago

Seriously. It's very telling that of all the things Sessions has done or plans to do as AG, recusing himself from the Russia investigation is the thing Trump has spoke out against.

That also has to be pretty awkward for him to have his boss tell him he wishes he hadn't hired him. Not that I feel sorry for him.

"What does WWII have to do with anything?"

Apart from the sentence before, where he calls him a war monger? And then the part where he ties that to early military intervention saving lives?

He's saying that as an example of war mongering being valid behavior, lives would have been saved by agitating more strongly for early military intervention (war mongering).

It's not a very good point, but I have to wonder how you can be so stupid that you didn't understand it.

You should take your username as advice. There's no reason to bring up WW2 in the context of McCain's war-mongering, because McCain had nothing to do with that war whatsoever. The criticism of his war mongering is regarding recent conflicts like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, etc. where he has pushed for US involvement. Bringing up WWII in that context makes no sense.

Calidissident, I pointed out a simple reality that drives a lot of neocon thought that an early intervention with the Nazis (say, when they occupied the Rhineland) would've cost far fewer lives than allowing it to stand and fighting World War II ended up causing.

World War II is an abnormally cleat example. Things like Iraq --- there were pretty obvious issues.

World War II --- Hitler himself said they'd have had to retreat immediately if they faced any opposition. His generals were hoping that somebody would stop him so the few left who wanted to depose him could do so. It's one of the precious few cases where a quick and easy military action early on could've saved millions.

It is one of the few cases where pre-emption was the best option. I have difficulty thinking of others.

The People's Republic of Boulder's latest cash grab.

"We want to educate people on the safety of traveling through crosswalks as well as the intersections," Boulder Transportation Planner Matthew Jones said.

    ...

Police will be specifically monitoring three city traffic ordinances:

Pedestrians and cyclists must press the "walk" button before entering the crosswalk, or face a $50 fine.
Cyclists must slow to 8mph while crossing, or face a $50 fine.
Drivers must stop at crosswalks if pedestrians are present and allow them to cross, or face a $125 fine.

Jones says it will be up to each officer's discression to issue citations. They may let many people off with warnings.

Uh-huh. Right. It's about "educating people." Sure it is. They "may" let people off with warnings... depending on how good their BJ skills are.

Unlike other materials, plastic is unable to break down. As a result, three-quarters of all plastic is not recycled, but sent to landfills, Science Advances concluded."

Trump's embrace of Russia making top advisers wary

The uneasy dynamic between the president and top aides has been exacerbated by the revelation this week of an extended dinner conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the recent summit in Germany. The previously undisclosed conversation, which occurred a few hours after their official bilateral meeting, raised red flags with advisers already concerned by the president's tendency to shun protocol and press ahead with outreach toward Russia, according to two U.S. officials and three top foreign officials.

    1. Crusty Juggler :)   8 years ago

But some top aides, including National Security Adviser Gen. H.R. McMaster, have been warning that Putin is not to be trusted. An intelligence officer-turned-politician, Putin is known for steering discussions in his own favor.

The three foreign officials who have spoken with top Trump advisers described a disconnect, or "mixed signals," between Trump and his team over Russia, highlighting a lack of a clear policy. U.S. officials echoed that sentiment, with one saying diplomats and intelligence officials were "dumbfounded" by the president's approach, particularly given the evidence of Russia's election meddling.

McMaster expressed his disapproval of Trump's course to foreign officials during the lead-up to his trip to Germany. The general specifically said he'd disagreed with Trump's decision to hold an Oval Office meeting in May with top Russian diplomats and with the president's general reluctance to speak out against Russian aggression in Europe, according to the three foreign officials.

McMaster and other national security aides also advised the president against holding an official bilateral meeting with Putin.

In a highly unusual move, McMaster did not attend the bilateral meeting with Putin. Only Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and a translator made up the U.S. side.

Is it good that no one is on the same page?

lack of a clear policy on Russia
lack of a clear policy on health care
lack of a clear policy on immigration (he kept DACA and DAPA after all)
lack of a clear policy on Iran (he just certified the 'terrible' Iran deal)

    Trump on Sessions:

Jeff Sessions takes the job, gets into the job, recuses himself, which frankly I think is very unfair to the president," he added. "How do you take a job and then recuse yourself? If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, 'Thanks, Jeff, but I'm not going to take you.' It's extremely unfair ? and that's a mild word ? to the president.

    1. XenoZooValentine   8 years ago

Yeah, I've had family with various cancers. People who cheer when it's somebody they don't like make me cringe.

One of the biggest things that puts me off today's "progressives" is stuff like the Thatcher "death parties" and other scumbag behavior. (She once opined that the left didn't care if the poor were better off as long as everybody was worse off. Good job proving her right, you ghoulish retards.) It really shows you what losers and psychos who have lost control over their own failed little lives wish upon the rest of us. It's not something we should emulate.

I also remember some "social justice" assholes doing it to a videogame critic with cancer over his decision not to jump on the "#GamerGate = ISIS" bandwagon, which made my decisions regarding that controversy easy as fuck.
