  • "The Trump administration has set new criteria for visa applicants from six mainly Muslim nations and all refugees that require a 'close' family or business tie to the United States…. The new guidelines sent to U.S. embassies and consulates on Wednesday say that applicants from the six countries must prove a relationship with a parent, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling in the U.S."
  • President Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in are scheduled to meet today.
  • Iraqi forces have retaken control of the mosque in Mosul from ISIS.
  • "U.S. officials on Wednesday announced enhanced security and screening measures for all commercial flights to the United States but backed away from a proposal to expand a ban on laptops and other electronic devices—unless airlines and airports refuse to comply with the new rules."

Tillerson blows up at top White House aide

The normally laconic Texan unloaded on Johnny DeStefano, the head of the presidential personnel office, for torpedoing proposed nominees to senior State Department posts and for questioning his judgment.

The episode stunned other White House officials gathered in chief of staff Reince Priebus' office, leaving them silent as Tillerson raised his voice. In the room with Tillerson and DeStefano were Priebus, top Trump aide Jared Kushner and Margaret Peterlin, the secretary of state's chief of staff.

Many of his proposed nominees have been rejected by DeStefano's Office of Presidential Personnel either because they are Democrats or because they are Republicans who were critical of Trump during the campaign.

    Government isn't so fun.

    1. Jerryskids   8 years ago

So which one of those people was the leaker?

      1. Rhywun   8 years ago

I've been to a million meetings like this. Why is this at all noteworthy?

    2. Aloysious   8 years ago

      Tillerson raised his voice?

If grown-ass adults can't handle a raised voice, maybe they should retire.

    3. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

Of course you had to post this. I had it all lined up for the PM.

The encounter, described by four people familiar with what happened, was so explosive that Kushner approached Peterlin afterward and told her that Tillerson's outburst was completely unprofessional, according to two of the people familiar with the exchange, and told her that they needed to work out a solution.

How do you respond in any way other than, "Blow it out your ass, Jared"? You're at the adults' table, daddy's boy.

      1. Crusty Juggler - Sapiosexual   8 years ago

I know - Tillerson, Mattis, and the other adults must be losing their minds.

        1. ThomasD   8 years ago

This is a between the lines communique.

When they see you blow up, and agree with your point, they note your passion for the job. When they disagree with your point then they call you unprofessional.

Either way, you know who has the upper hand on the issue.

      2. paranoid android   8 years ago

If Jared Kushner called you "unprofessional" and in response you beat him to death with a stapler I think you'd have a pretty good extreme emotional distress defense at trial. No reasonable person could be expected to put up with something so insane.

    4. Ron   8 years ago

The Rise of the Feminist-Adjacent Startup

But Amoruso and Agrawal intertwined their identities so tightly with proclamations of female empowerment that their personal brands fell apart and their companies' reputations were damaged the moment there was a whiff of hypocrisy.

Revelations about these two founders hit hard, particularly because they were living reminders that when you pit feminism against capitalism, the latter tends to prevail.

    1. Crusty Juggler - Sapiosexual   8 years ago

In the midst of Amoruso's and Agrawal's controversies, the media questioned whether it was wise to make the next generation of feminist leaders women who were capitalists first. The Guardian's Arwa Mahdawi declared that "capitalism has turned feminism into a meaningless lifestyle choice we can all buy our way into." BuzzFeed's Doree Shafrir wondered: "Is it possible to be a committed feminist and a committed capitalist at the same time? And why are we still so surprised when these women???who have built brands on saying the things we want to hear???turn out to be just as flawed as their male peers?"

It's a fairly interesting (at times) and impressively long piece, but I like how there is the implication that men will not invest in female-oriented products because they do not understand them. I am sure that can be the case in some respects, but I also doubt American women are clamoring for a diva cup.

      1. lap83   8 years ago

I remember reading once that the founder of Starbucks hated iced coffee, but that didn't stop him from providing it when he discovered that's what the customers demanded. Now that is pretty much what they are known for.

Smart investors don't always need to understand or even like the product. They aren't central planners.

    3. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

when you pit feminism against capitalism, the latter tends to prevail.

So Hihn has been on a rampage, corpse-fucking threads left and right, and his comments are getting incoherent even by his own standards. For those that have been here longer than me, is this typical or is he going Hihnsane? Is it time for a Hihntervention? Or would that be utterly Hihneffective? Anyone have any Hihnput?

Hihn may be difficult, but i can only hope i'm as feisty as he is when i turn 150.

    6. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

This is typical, especially when you point out the flaws, sclerosis, and lack of evidence of his arguments. Hihntard is like Reason's own phrase-generator bot, repeating the same 3-4 arguments depending on the subject.

    7. Ken Shultz   8 years ago

He screams at people who want to get rid of Medicaid for supporting Medicaid.

He can't tell the difference between arguments for or against things.

There's no point in responding to him about anything--even the unfounded personal attacks aside.

So this is the extreme vetting that poor Donnie wasn't able to do so long as his travel ban was blocked by the black-robed meanies? I haven't read the actual injunction, but did they really pre-emptively block him from issuing this 6 months ago?

    The Wellness Epidemic

Goop began publishing long interviews with doctors, healers, and shamans. One of its most-shared pieces is an interview with Oscar Serrallach, an Australian doctor, about "postnatal depletion," which suggested that women live in a depleted state for up to ten years after the birth of a child. Among the contributing factors: overwhelming stress, nutrient-poor food, and "electrosmog." While Goop had traditionally done well selling products related to its content (spiralizers blew up after Paltrow's recipe for "zucchini cacio e pepe" went live), what could it sell a woman who's just received medical confirmation that the negative feelings simmering in her gut are not just in her mind? How about vitamins? Goop Wellness now offers four vitamin "protocols" (protocols and practice are words you'll encounter a lot in this world) based on four common complaints: The Mother Load addresses postnatal depletion; High School Genes is for women who find it harder to lose weight as they age (i.e., all women); Why Am I So Effing Tired? is for the pernicious fatigue faced by do-it-all women; and Balls in the Air is similar, only more for the chronically stressed.

    1. Crusty Juggler - Sapiosexual   8 years ago

"It's been overwhelming," says Ashley Lewis, senior director of wellness at Goop. "We sold over $100,000 worth of vitamins on day one, and that trajectory has just continued.

Back in my day when we felt unwell we switched over to filtered cigarettes.

      1. Gaear Grimsrud   8 years ago

We laugh at this, but Gwyneth's ability to extract money from upper-middle class and wealthy white women for pointless crap and bric-a-brac is beginning to rival Martha Stewart's.

Sandra Bland Case: Perjury Charge Dropped Against Ex-Trooper Brian Encinias

Prosecutors have dropped the single charge against the Texas state trooper involved in the arrest of driver Sandra Bland, whose jail cell death in July 2015 became a flash point in the Black Lives Matter movement and led to a state law in her name.

With Wednesday's dismissal of the misdemeanor perjury case against Brian Encinia, the trooper agreed to surrender his peace officer license and not work in law enforcement, said special prosecutors Pheobe Smith and Chad Dick. The case must also permanently remain on his record.

There's an Almost Perfectly Legal Way to Get Free TV

Stanton and entrepreneurs like him are Hollywood's latest challenge in the battle against piracy, which costs the entertainment industry billions of dollars a year in lost revenue. About 6 percent of households in North America already own digital media players doctored to let them tap unauthorized content, according to the broadband equipment provider Sandvine Inc.

"It's a huge problem," said Karen Thorland, senior vice president of global content protection at the Washington-based Motion Picture Association of America. "It's very user-friendly and growing very swiftly."

Only a day and a half left in their fiscal year. Will the Banana Republic get a budget deal done? Will their bonds get downgraded to junk status? Will the rest of the country be formally asked to bail out these Obama momma losers with federal debt? Stay tuned!
