House Passes Obamacare Replacement, Trump Signs Religious Freedom Order, Prince Phillip Retiring from Public Life: P.M. Links

The House's vote on the American Health Care Act (AHCA) possibly replacing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is really 90 percent of what any news discussion is about right now. Here's Peter Suderman describing the situation. The House has voted to repeal and replace. It heads now to the Senate. Here are the Republicans who voted no.

  • But will the Senate even vote on it?
  • President Donald Trump this morning signed an executive order on religious freedom that doesn't do a whole lot considering all the outrage it inspired. It vaguely calls for the IRS to maybe ease off on enforcing the Johnson Amendment, which stops churches and non-profits from endorsing candidates. And it requests "regulatory relief" for organizations with religious objections over being forced to fund birth control for its employees. It doesn't actually indicate any significant changes in policies or regulations, though.
  • Prince Phillip, the 95-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II, will be retiring from public life. An emergency meeting at Buckingham Palace had led to rumors that he (or somebody else) had died, but that was not the case.
  • Pentagon officials said today they're still considering whether to recommend sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan. They plan to send recommendations to Trump within a week.
  • A pack of bounty hunters in Tennessee descended on a car in a Wal-Mart parking lot and opened fire, killing one man and wounding another. It wasn't the car or the people they were actually supposed to be looking for and now they've been charged with murder.
  • Apparently today is Star Wars Day, but in the circles I run in, every other goddamn day is Star Wars Day. It gets on my nerves when I'm trying to watch livestreams online of people playing Magic: The Gathering.

The other ten percent? Cock holsters.

          Affordable.

  2. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

...but in the circles I run in, every other goddamn day is Star Wars Day.

And you can run those circles in a mere 12 parsecs.

Prince Phillip, the 95-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II, will be retiring from public life. An emergency meeting at Buckingham Palace had led to rumors that he (or somebody else) had died, but that was not the case

He did die, but then he got bored of that and came back to life.

    1. Chipper Mourning Somali Roadz   8 years ago

      That's my plan too.

    2. MarkLastname   8 years ago

Question: when he dies do they bury Edinburg with him?

      1. Scarecrow Repair & Chippering   8 years ago

        One letter at a time.

  4. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

It wasn't the car or the people they were actually supposed to be looking for and now they've been charged with murder.

I really thought they had a wide legal latitude to kill people. Maybe they did, too.

    1. Zeb   8 years ago

Unlike with police, it only applies when they kill the right people.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

They were shopping at the Walmarts. How much more right can you get?

        1. Zeb   8 years ago

          OK, the intended targets.

    2. Curt   8 years ago

"Clarksville police would not confirm or deny these details, but authorities have said they are troubled by how the bounty hunters put people at risk."

Whoa!!!! Calm down with all of that outrage. Just because they shot up a parking lot and then continued firing during a car chase and ramming the vehicle; ultimately leading to someone's death?!?! Whoever it was that was the actual target had probably committed some unspeakably heinous act like using or selling drugs.

You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs. That's no reason to go and be "troubled" by something.

    3. Juice   8 years ago

I'll say one thing about Clarksville, TN. They have a KILLER Chinese Buffet that's super cheap and awesome.

      1. creech   8 years ago

Do they have a Cheddars? Had some sort of awesome bacon burger there passing thru.

John Was Right: Kevin Williamson is cancer.

The woman whose check did not come is on disability. (There's a lot of that here.) That is the check she was expecting, which did not come, for . . . some reason. But whatever her disability is, it does not appear to be the worst of her problems. She has a daughter and a man in her life (it is not clear whether he is her husband or the girl's father or both or neither), and they are obliged to maintain two separate households, "because of the domestic . . . event . . . that happened," she explains.

The teacher in me cannot help but notice that when it comes time to explain the facts of the case, the people in this courtroom rarely appear as the subjects in their own sentences. A "domestic event" just "happened," and now the man in her life cannot reside under the same roof as her daughter ? or Child Protective Services will take that daughter away. Which means that after her eviction (which is never seriously in doubt) she cannot rely on the person upon whom most people in her situation instinctively would rely.

    1. Not a True MJG   8 years ago

She is not the only person whose check didn't come. The passivity and subjectlessness of these narratives is striking, and strikingly consistent. Domestic events happen. Checks come or don't come. (Mostly they don't.) Husbands are sent to jail, children are taken away by the clipboard-toting minions of Authority, disease descends. The money isn't there. And, in the end, they are evicted. Bad things just happen, and, today, I am the bad thing that is just happening to one of these luckless and unhappy children of God. I am eviction, I am CPS, I am the check that didn't come. I am diabetic amputation. I am cancer.

      [...]

"Why are you doing this to us?" the woman's daughter demanded. Because I am the bad thing that is just happening to you today, the unforeseeable event that has been hanging over you by a single hair of a horse's tail for a decade, the inevitable end of a terrible lamentation.

30% of the GOP vote against the Healthcare "reform" came from the RINOs in the Philadelphia area. The TEA Party crested at something like 35% of the local GOP votes so these RINOs aren't threatened from within the Party. But, since the Philly suburbs are now blue - having voted against Trump - their votes against this bill won't save them in 2018, nor will they be able to count on 100% of the conservative vote, many of whom are pissed they bought the promises these guys were flinging around in 2016. It sure is tough trying to figure out which way the wind is blowing when you aren't in a safe district.

Maybe he could do a song about pants shitting.

You know, Remy is playing like six different progressives, and every time Trump does or says something, they all just shit their pants.

At the end, Paul Ryan passes an ObamaCare overhaul bill--and they all shit their pants at the same time.

At first blush, it may seem juvenile, but it's also funny because it's true.

For goodness' sake, it's been six months since Trump was elected. When will the media finally stop shitting their pants?
