New York City Libertarians: Watch Ben Powell Debate Mark Krikorian on Open Borders at Next Week's Soho Forum
Should the U.S. issue visas to (basically) anybody who wants one?
What kind of restrictions should there be on U.S. immigration? On Monday, Ben Powell, head of the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University, will debate open borders with Mark Krikorian, who runs the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).
The event will be held at the Soho Forum, which is a monthly Oxford-style debate series in Manhattan that "features topics of special interest to libertarians" and "aims to enhance social and professional ties within the New York City libertarian community." The moderator is Barron's Economics Editor Gene Epstein (who also happens to be my father).
At the beginning of each event, attendees get to vote on a resolution. After the debaters have had their say, the audience votes again, and the side that's gained the most ground wins the contest. Monday's resolution is on open borders with a few carve-outs:
U.S. immigration policy should be to issue migration visas, without any numerical limitations, to all applicants who are not on a terrorist watch list, and who do not otherwise have criminal records or contagious diseases.
Powell will take the affirmative vs. Krikorian for the negative. Get your tickets here.
You'll also be able to listen to the debate (probably next week) on Reason's podcast (subscribe at iTunes).
At November's Soho Forum, Nick Gillespie debated Walter Block on whether libertarians should vote for Trump. Listen here.
Last month, it was Matt Welch vs. Jonathan Chait on whether Obama was a "great president." Listen to that one below:

Sounds like it will be an interesting debate. I really enjoyed the Gillespie one.
I wish I only had to work one day a week
From each according to his ability, JB. Take it as a compliment.
"U.S. immigration policy should be to issue migration visas, without any numerical limitations, to all applicants who are not on a terrorist watch list, and who do not otherwise have criminal records or contagious diseases."
So, it's OK if they're likely to become a public charge, or if they're not attached to the principles of the U.S. Constitution (relevant for those on a pathway to citizenship)?
Well presumably that's what they're going to be debating.
Is it even fair to the open-borders people to have the "pro" side support the admission of people likely to be a public charge?
I don't see how such individuals can be weeded out under the phrasing of the resolution.
If no welfare is available, natural weeding out will ensue.
That's not what the resolution says.
Yes, but given the fact that the resolution is a declaration of an aspirational normative, why should the pro side be precluded from attempting to overcome the opposition's public charge objection?
The position "let them all in but they are ineligible for welfare" is not inconsistent with the "pro" position of the resolution.

"New York City Libertarians"
Hah, you guys made a funny. You should try one next about female libertarians.
"Yo, since you have respected the NAP I will in turn respect your rights, but I strongly suggest you go and fuck yourself."
/official slogan of the New York City Libertarian Party
[shouting out window from one floor up]
SHADDUP DE BOTH OF YAS!
What'sa matter you,
hey, gotta no respect
Whatta you tink you do,
why you looka so sad
Itsa not so bad, Itsa nice-a place,
Ahh shaddupa you face!
Today in word salad, UCB student justifies violence against Milo.
I just want to know if the Naked Brunch person is male or female, because I honestly cannot tell.
He's named Hardman, is he?
Yeah, he wishes.
All two inches of him.
I hope to problematize these narratives
Do you think he reads over his work and thinks, "Yeah, that's a good line"?
Assuming he isn't a frat boy on a dare, or a computerized Random Gibberish generator, then I'm guessing yes, because he'd have to be that stupid to write that stuff in the first place.
Those are some serious white ass teeth.
If you cut down on the espresso and cigarettes your teeth could look like that, you guinea bastard.
HEY!
I only drink espresso.
And while you're at it, cut back on the marinara and grappa, too.
And the grape drank.
Hate Grappa.
But LOVE Averna!
Anything else patriarch?
I'm not really sure how long it takes to process 3-4 billion immigration applications. But judging by how slow they are now, I'm gonna say they should be finished shortly after Andromeda and the Milky Way collide, but sometime before the heat death of the universe.
But the good deal is that this would mean several countries will be population free in a couple of years. That's our cue, libertarian comrades!
Wouldn't it be easier just to annex the territory so they don't have to move? It would be cheaper and more honest. Tell the locals who want to be US citizens to stay where they are and help manage the place. It worked for the British.
Ostend Manifesto 2: Imperial Bugaloo
You guessed it. Imperialists!
"At November's Soho Forum, Nick Gillespie debated Walter Block on whether libertarians should vote for Trump."
What different does it make at this point?
The result was that Nick caused libertarians to vote for Trump. It's all Nick's fault that we have the Great Orange Trumpallo rampaging through china shops.
Dude, 12 votes (10 of which are in non-swing states) do not tip a presidential election.
How to fix the travel ban: just do what the Italians do.
Let in everybody who is not already banned, and if they say nice things about jihad, imprison or deport them. It works for the Italians. They're a stone's throw from ISIS in Libya and have had zero jihadi attacks.
How many workplace violence incidents have they had?
What about acts of rage from men confused about their sexuality?
I said, above the canyon wall
Strong eyes did glow
It was the leader of the land, baby
Oh my God!
The Great Orange Trumpallo!
Look out! Look out!
What Barack Obama said to Trump when power transitioned -
"And So is the Golden City blackened
With each step you take in my Hall.
Marvel at perfection, for it is fleeting.
You have brought Sin to Heaven
And doom upon all the world."
Hey, did you know that in Conan Exiles, you can capture people and make them slaves? I've emailed the devs and asked for an Orphan feature. Those will work the mines.
Comedian cons his way into giving a TED talk. Talks about the future. People aren't sure whether or not to take him seriously.
It's the same dude who had his show yanked from Adult Swim (it was called 'World Peace') for having 'alt-right connections.' Spoiler alert: he didn't have any alt-right connections.
Pshaw, that's nothing, I once heard about some comedians who got jobs writing left-wing gibberish for a libertarian foundation.
He still made more sense than Chrystia Freeland.
'Ideas are amazing'
That guy is bigger than Brady.
Him trying to hide his laughter behind a piece of paper is just divine.
I think I would rather read an entire Sugarfree novel (which I think he should do BTW), than watch 2 NYC "libertarians."
The idea is to watch the debate, not two random people in the audience. The debate is between a libertarian who teaches at Texas Tech vs a conservative.
Isn't there a rule that if the headline includes a question, then the answer is always "no"?
Oh, For y'all, inlcuding me, that went to Steam since the diaspora...

The Grand Unified Theory of Liberalism, adapted from Evan Sayet
The Americans born around 1950 were the first generation to enjoy an unprecedented level safety and prosperity. For most of history, you had to be smart and lucky in order to avoid poverty, hunger, disease, war, etc. The relative lack of hardship allowed them to indulge in fantasy.
And when they came of age in 1960s, that is what many of them did. The great evil of their generation was racial discrimination. The struggle against racial discrimination slowly morphed into a struggle against *all* discrimination.
What they failed to realize is that thinking itself is discrimination. It's impossible to survive without sorting truth from lies, good from bad, etc.
So when they became adults, their central principle was no gender, race, culture, religion, etc can be better than anything else. So when a country or culture or group does do better, it must be because they are cheating somehow. And the cheater must be punished and the victim must be rewarded. The net result of this is that the liberal will inevitably favor what is evil and failed over the good and successful. They have to in order to fulfill their cosmic duty to balance out the universe.
And that's why liberals will side with the USSR over the US, failing public schools over successful private schools, Castro over Thatcher, and on and on and on...
Ok. Either that or they are just morons.
Unfulfilled losers.
Makes sense, but the intellectual foundations of that attitude go back a ways. E.g.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Gospel
France: Anti-Christian attacks rise 245 percent
Gee, I wonder why.
French detective: Aha! I knew it! All right boys, round up the satanists and anarchists. I'll be there shortly just as soon as I figure out when this murder took place.
It's probably the alt-right Christians killing themselves in order to stir up Islamaphobia.
Uh, France's dwindling number of Jews going on anti-Christian rampages...?
Ah, Lutherans targeting Catholics, as is their wont. France should put immigration control on Sweden before the dream of Gustavus Adolphus becomes a reality.
The Constitution is not a suicide pact, but libertarianism might be.
Yes, for a number of years now I've been dividing libertarians into suicidal and non-suicidal types.
Welfare state to the world!
Let's vote on the proper method of execution for adultery!

Should the US issue visas to anyone who wants one? No, nobody should need a visa to enter the country.
