Talking Gorsuch, DeVos, and Super Bowl Commercials on Tonight's Kennedy
Also on the Fox Business Network program at 8 p.m. ET is John Stossel on Berkeley violence, and New Order bassist Peter Hook

On tonight's Kennedy (Fox Business Network 8 p.m. ET, with a repeat at midnight), I'm flanked on the Party Panel by newsbabes Carley Shimkus and Julie Banderas, as we talk about the confirmation prospects and comparative qualities of Neil Gorsuch and Betsy DeVos, as well as the wisdom (or lack thereof) of Democratic strategy toward them. Then later, obviously, I will try to smuggle in the phrase "border adjustment tax" in relation to this Super Bowl commercial:
Also on the show, John Stossel will talk about violence and free speech at Berkeley, and in a great conversation Kennedy interviews the former bass player of New Order, Peter Hook, about his new book: Substance: Inside New Order.

So...who all has left by now?
(speak up if you're not here any more)
I'm only sticking around for the brickbat pun-fests.
And twerking videos.
And the euphemisms.
... oh! and this, I need this...
JERK!
I will be here til the bitter end, like that band on that boat that sank.
If worse comes to worse, reason will just become another place for me to mine derp.
That's the spirit
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that shares his comments with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This ship?
Reason's insipid garbage has chased away a fair few, but I've been reading this site and its comments for years, and I'm still here.
I don't get the leaving part. Stop donating. Fine. But I'd rather hang out where I disagree with the articles but enjoy the comments than the other way around.
I think so as well. We've got to weather the shitstorm together.
The comments here are where I've learned more about libertarianism than the articles and themselves. Why would I leave a community like that?
Friends, Libertarians, countrymen, give me your attention. I have come here to bury King Gillespie, not to praise him.
more than a handful.
One of these days it will be nothing but Eddie replying to himself, and PB coming on to scream BUSHPIGS.
So now we're turning on each other?
In the nick of time, Cytotoxic will return to reunite the commentariat.
FOR HE IS THE KWISATZ HADERACH.
Why did I laugh so hard at this?
Burrrrapp
Are they gonna talk about sloopy's mom?
Maybe Lucy could write an article for them...
Why would Reason be interested in a story of how an armed agent of the state assailed an American citizen providing medical aid to a man in distress? Are you some sort of yokel? I bet you sleep with relatives. See how incisive my reasoning is?
Hey, Dalmia, pass the martinis.
/Neo-Reasonite.
Check out the PM links (control + f Katherine).
I suspect they think they're just too 'close' to it - that there'd be conflicts of interest.
Because he named his daughter Reason after he met his wife here, a story Reason chose to use during their fundraising drives?
To be clear, it's not the end of the world - and Reason.com doesn't have an obligation to him - but it is a shit move to not write a story or two about it, especially considering the amount of similar stories - as well as pointless drivel - they have been blogging about recently.
I have to disagree. The wording was "not quite for Reason," strongly implying a topical issue.
If it was a conflict of interest, the response would've said as much and maybe offered to forward it to another sympathetic pub.
FTR, I think COI could be legitimate here, given that sloop is a known donor.
My disagreement stems from the fact that KMW could have easily just said that instead of being super vague about it.
John Stagliano was a donor.
That's a good point about conflict of interest, but I don't see why they can't still write about it while making that conflict clear? Especially since excessive use of force is something Reason covers.
It boggles the mind. My mind is boggled.
Crusty, Password & Hiro - you're right. I have no clue, that was the only thing I could think of..
I've been hanging out here since the oughts. I don't want to give up on Reason and H&R. On the other hand, the WTF moments are coming in with alarming frequency.
I find myself in the same place. I've been here since ~'08 on and off, and I really don't want to give up. Reason (especially the comments) is the reason I went from conservative to conservatarian to libertarian. However, I have been vocal over the past few months about the negative trend I've been seeing in the writing here, and I think that the inauguration of Trump has pushed it over the edge for me.
Before the commenter revolt, I was thinking about scaling back to just AM and PM links. Now I'm reconsidering. I'll see what Tonio has to offer, and make my decision then.
For what it's worth, I dropped an email in the News Tips address down in the bottom right for the first time in my life. Hopefully if enough others do the same, they'll get the point.
Did Trump just disappear another Reason post? I made the pithiest comment ever on the Yemeni protest thread, and now it's gone.
Yemen protest? what was it about?
Trump's EO on immigration bans.
If so, god damn I'm glad they pulled it. Quota is fulfilled, comrades. And surpassed! Five Year Plan in Three Years! You are all Stakhanovites!
Buy my guac! Buy my guac!
I thought that was going to be a parody of this
"The Appointment in Samarra"
(as retold by W. Somerset Maugham [1933])
The speaker is Death
There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture, now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threating getsture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.
If the merchant knew Death personally, shouldn't he have gone to see Death and found out what was going on with his servant *before* sending the servant off to Samarra?
Maybe he just wanted an excuse to get rid of the servant, maybe he wasn't making quota but it would be too much of a hassle to fire him?
Anyone else learn this story from Sherlock?
On tonight's Kennedy (Fox Business Network 8 p.m. ET, with a repeat at midnight), I'm flanked on the Party Panel by newsbabes Carley Shimkus and Julie Banderas,
I followed your links and, damn, man, how do you do it? I bet it's Gilmore's fashion tips!
Babes?l You undersell. If those two showed up at the 2020 LP Con they could be nominated to the ticket unanimously even by those who can't stand warmed over RINOs.
Julie Banderas
Oh hell yes.
And for the ladies...
I will give both the highest praise I can to a TV personality...
They would fit right in on Italian television.
Banderas has to have come from Univision. Because damn.
The ambassador again??? If rumors start flying that Kennedy and Bolton are having an affair, I wouldn't be surprised if I was the one who started them.
Doesn't Bolton have a job in the new administration by now?
If by administration you mean Fox News, then yes.
He's waiting by the phone, waiting for Trump to call him up and tell him he's not alone
You know the Judge has the hots for her. I think she's pretty fine, I just don't think I could hang out with her unless she was on quaaludes or something to tone her down a notch or two.
?
Judge Napolitano is gay, afaik. I don't think he's open about it, but that's what one of the producers on his old show told me.
Huh, I would have sworn he had a thing for her based on a few of her early episodes when he was on. Seemed like he was totally horndogging her, but trying to make it seem like he wasn't. Maybe I was projecting:) lol
I like Kennedy.
So Bolton is saying that the president is a mole???
I think its sort of funny that John Bolton continues to be a regular feature on Kennedy.
maybe its because even after years of him being on the show (and the Independents) I still think of him as still 'too serious' a person to be one of Kennedy's frequent interlocutors...
but also that the two of them seem to actually get along quite chummy. He sort of just shrugs off her goofyness and laughs and pretends she asked serious questions. If anything its actually mutually beneficial, because it makes her seem more credible, and makes him seem ... not "more" hip, but at least less-"stereotypically-icky-Neocon"
Kennedy is going straight for Welch, knowing that this is over the ladies' heads. #sexist
"Like he said..."
Rude.
"I don't think Trump should have answered this question the way he did..."
That's pretty much always safe to say.
Two GOP women not voting for DeVos? Meeee-ow.
2 Profiles in Courage awards coming up
+ 2 more checks from the teachers union
Matt =
Slate suit, pink shirt, indigo blue tie
Solidly bangin'. I don't want to get him in dutch with the missus' but I think he dresses better when he's partnered with Grade-A babes. Which is only natural.
I think we actually discussed the "pink-shirt/blue tie" thing last time, if i recall, and said it would look better w. darker grey suit.... and surprise surprise surprise, here you go.
in another shocking development = Joseph Abboud is advertising on Kennedy's show. Coincidence? I think not.
Slate suit in the dead of winter? Pass. Stossel had it correct. Charcoal. (Although how difficult is it to wear a white shirt with your suit, the way God intended?)
I think for people that don't wear a suit every day for work, white shirts seem 'boring'. also, some people get a lot of input from their significant others (my ex gf was always trying to make me wear more colors/patterns, and i'd lean towards plain old white)
I don't really feel you re: seasonality of suit colors. I mean, ok, like tan is NG, or like tropical wool, .. but i'm sort of 'meh' on the idea that some shades of grey are more apropos just because its cold out.
My one hope for the millenillals is that they finally kill off the suit and tie. That's 50 years over due.
i think you're setting yourself up for disappointment.
people wear them less, but they don't really wear them differently. if anything, millenials are even more nostalgic for the 'classic', Mad Men type style than was Gen X, which was largely indifferent.
the closest the suit came to an untimely demise was in the heyday of the dot-com boom, when for a few years it became downright weird for people to wear suits outside of law firms.
I don't care enough to be disappointed but I certainly wouldn't mourn their demise.
I'm glad Welch still takes good advice from GILMORE. hey G, I already have a charcoal and blue pinstripe suit. Blue blazer for cocktail hour. What do I need next?
If you don't own a cotton khaki sportcoat, its my favorite 'anytime' jacket, esp in the spring/fall.
they range from 'denim-y' (heavy) to 'linen-y' (light) and everything in between, depending on where you get them.
I've had luck actually buying them used cheap on ebay ($20-100) then having a tailor cut them (*often paid more for tailoring than for the jacket).
I've had like 5 over the past few years and like 2 of them turned out to be the best - one a bit higher quality and tightly tailored, something i'd wear with trousers and a tie, and another that's just a beater that i wear with jeans.
the same general idea could also apply to a tweed beater-jacket / tweed-semi-formal jacket. My experience w/ sportcoats its sort of a trial & error thing until you find something that both fits perfectly, and you really like wearing. I have a blue linen/poly sportcoat that my dad gave me 20 years ago (and probably dates to the 1960s) which fits like a glove, and is a some kind of fabric that just isn't made anymore.... people always sort of double-take at it, and go, "where'd you get that?..." Probably one of my most-worn pieces of clothing, but isn't worth a dime. its things like that which you pick up over time that really pay off.
*broken link
just an example of a 'nicer' khaki sportcoat. I would never spend more than $150 or so on something like that just because its the sort of thing i beat the shit out of, but fortunately i've had luck coming across them at the right place/time for dirt cheap.
Stossel feels sorry for Kennedy and her lowly Bachelor's.
Stoss is all aboard the fatshaming train.
Did Kennedy just dispatch Stossel to Berkeley to cover the riots?
Set midnight rerun to record
Suddenly Welch himself on The View.
Is that it for the panel?
I'm with Kennedy. Fuck the cheater Brady. Go Atlanta!
You gotta root for the Falcs.
I feel very outnumbered in colorado.
Yeah, I think they're counting on the new camera tech for some buzz. i just up they don't do the quad screen thing they tried with the college football playoffs. That was stupid.
