A Student Felt 'Traumatized' Because His Professors Did Not Silence Everyone He Disagreed With
Students got extensions on their paper because Trump was elected. It still wasn't enough.

A recent op-ed in the University of Pennsylvania's student paper, written by an unhappy student of color, paints a frustratingly bleak portrait of the emotional state of the modern campus liberal.
That student, James Fisher, claims that the recent semester was the worst he's had at college so far, and for one reason: Several of his white professors caused him to feel marginalized and traumatized.
Why? It's not entirely clear. Nor is it obvious what should be done about it, or even what Fisher would like done about it.
"Imagine being a black student on Penn's campus with even one of these types of professors," wrote Fisher. "I had three. And each one of those professors either did not care to learn about their white privilege, or lied to me and said that they did."
What cause does Fisher have to presume his professors were lying about their disinterest in issues of privilege? He does not say.
Perhaps the professors made offensive statements or used racially charged language? Nope.
"They think that by not saying racist comments in class, they are doing good," wrote Fisher. "Not knowing that that half-hearted attempt further contributes to the oppression that I experience in my predominantly white classrooms."
It seems like Fisher has constructed a lose-lose scenario for his professors. If they make racist comments, they would no doubt be marginalizing him. But if they refrain from making racist comments, they are also contributing to his oppression.
Fisher went on to accuse one of his professors of "perpetuating these systems of oppression in class." Why? The professor showed images of plantation slaves, and also permitted other students to "say ignorant comments."
Fisher evidently told the professor that this wasn't OK—the professor had an obligation to silence other students in order to protect Fisher from mental anguish. The professor tried to console Fisher, but to no avail. As a result, Fisher stopped going to class.
"I stopped going to his class for a month," he wrote. "With different emotions going through my head from not only this class but from the Trump election, I did not want to step foot into another white space until I made sure that my mental health was restored."
Readers might find it incredible that a college student could remain a college student even after he stopped attending class for a month because he was offended by some of his peers. But the professor's flexibility wasn't sufficient for Fisher.
"It is not enough that you gave your black students extensions on their papers because Trump got elected," he wrote.
Nothing is enough, it seems:
It is not enough to be aware of your privilege. It is also not enough to be a nice person. Your niceness does not mean that you are not capable of contributing to racial systems of oppression.
It is not enough that you are sorry for the injustices caused by your people. It is not enough that you read one article on the Black Lives Matter movement because your black friend recommended it to you. It is not enough that you gave your black students extensions on their papers because Trump got elected.
The truth is, you as a single person cannot make up for the horrific things that white people have done to us throughout human history. But that does not mean that you do not have the power to stop yourself from oppressing the students that you teach every day.
You have to be invested in stopping racism and oppression every day, not just on your free time.
I think even a reader whose sole goal was to please Fisher would be frustrated by this column. That's because the student utterly fails to explain what he wants out of his college experience. What could his professors do to assuage his feelings of trauma? He never says. Being aware of privilege, reading about the Black Lives Matter movement, granting extensions to students of color in the wake of Trump's election, and being nice are all insufficient tactics, according to Fisher.
I don't mean to come down too harshly on a single student who's having a rough time. It could be the case that the university is doing a particularly bad job of providing him with the resources he needs to succeed. But this column doesn't do an adequate job of making the problem relatable to readers.
The College Fix reached out to Fisher for comment, asking him to elaborate on how he felt. Fisher evidently bristled at the suggestion that the answer wasn't obvious.
"I get that you're always searching for us [minority students] to get the answer," he told The College Fix, "when all you have to really do is just shut up and listen."
That's a frustrating non-answer: The College Fix was listening. People like me who read Fisher's column were listening. But no useful answer came. This of course makes it harder to take complaints bout marginalization and emotional trauma seriously. When students claim victim status, it often comes across like this is the goal in and of itself, rather than the means to some end.
College classes are supposed to consist of dialogue between highly-learned experts—the professors—and curious, bright novices—the students. No one should really be shutting up, least of all the people teaching the classes. While it's true that professors have a lot to learn from their students, leftist students increasingly seem to hold the attitude that the purpose of higher education is to reinforce the ideas they already have and shut out all contrary voices.
Such an attitude will leave them ill-equipped for the real world, where the trauma of encountering an uncomfortable notion is unavoidable.

That has to be a parody...right? Right?!

For an interesting divertissement, you should check out this article by a Physicist, Alan Sokol- written in 1996:
http://www.physics.nyu.edu/sok.....ca_v4.html
He describes a paper he submitted as follows:
The answer, unfortunately, is yes. Interested readers can find my article, ``Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity,'' in the Spring/Summer 1996 issue of Social Text. It appears in a special number of the magazine devoted to the ``Science Wars.''
A link to the actual paper he submitted is here, in case you can't believe it was actually written, let alone published should be find-able in the above web page, but they wouldn't let me add a third link here.
And that was then. Now this tripe is getting published regularly.
And just to add to the flood of insanity, here is another article about an ultra feminist/marxist gender warrior Judith Butler who wrrites the most unintelligible gibberish, however is considered "leading light" in her field of gender studies and oppression:
http://www.meforum.org/6482/is.....dward-said
While someone in this comment section suggested that the student writer of the above article go to the rooftop and hurl himself to the ground, sometimes I think it is myself who should consider this, given that this is now the future of our world.(?)
I'd also strongly recommend Sokal's 1996 essay, A Plea for Reason, Evidence and Logic.
BTW, Sokal is as far as I know a Marxist; most of this postmodern gibberish doesn't come from Marxism at all. Like Freddie deBoer, he sees through the bullshit.
Neil Gorsuch, the Nominee for a Stolen Seat, by the NYT's.
In other words the NYT does not understand the senate does not have to confirm
I wonder if they considered the attemopted filibuster of Samuel Alito an attempt to steal the seat.
Advise and Consent.
Senate: We advise the executive branch to wait until after the election before we consent to a new justice.
If you can't understand that, you're a fucking retard.
@DrZalus: Can you explain why you believe advising on a nominee is the same as refusing to advise on a nominee? And what would be the upper limit on "advising" that no nominee will be considered? If a year is acceptable, would it be reasonable in your opinion for the current congress to "advise" that the executive branch should wait until 2021 to nominate an appointee before he/she would be considered? Why or why not?
If RBG died, the Republicans would likely have been fine replacing her with whomever Obama wanted. A liberal replacing Scalia would have drastically altered the court. For some reason people ignore that. The fate of the Supreme Court shouldn't be driven by unexpected deaths. Anybody who doesn't retire should be replaced by someone similar.
That's because balanced means 100% progressive judges. In the minds of NYT readers, 1 originalist or conservative justice weighs as much as 11 leftist or progressive justices.
194 of 203 comments on that article are classified as "Reader's Picks."
It's a thumbs up circle jerk.
I find the NYT commentariat to be just as well-informed and logical as that of Breitbart, but with an absurd amount of excessive smugness.
I agree. The fact that it was Scalia and replacing him with Garland would have likely meant the overturning of both Heller and Citizens' United is why they refused to confirm Garland and were right to do so. The Democrats had a fair chance. All they had to do was win the election and Hillary would be appointing someone to replace Scalia, or more likely the Republicans would have confirmed Garland during the lame duck session. Hey, didn't someone once say "elections have consequences"?
The fact that it was Scalia and replacing him with Garland would have likely meant the overturning of both Heller and Citizens' United is why they refused to confirm Garland
Which also explains why the progs are so beside themselves. That was probably going to be their only chance in a long, long time to overturn those two decisions. If RBG dies during Trump's term and gets replaced with a conservative, then they'll be down to 5-3-1 conservative to liberal to swing (I consider Kennedy to be kind of a swing vote). They'd have to wait for 2 conservatives to die off during a time period when they have power before they'll have another bite at the apple.
And Kennedy is in his 80s. I would be surprised if he stays on the court four years. Kennedy is considered a conservative but he has often been the swing vote and voted for the liberal side. Replacing Kennedy with a more consistent conservative would shift the court significantly, though not as far as replacing RBG.
A liberal replacing Scalia would have drastically altered the court. For some reason people ignore that
And it wouldn't have even been an issue putting Garland in there if the Democrats hadn't weaponized the nomination process with their antics following the Bork, Thomas, and Alito selections, or Obama putting a non-entity like Kagan or an obvious token like Sotomayor on the bench. Now putting a Supreme Court judge on the bench is considered the equivalent of electing Congressional representatives.
Getting control of the Supreme Court is the actual equivalent of being able to amend the constitution without having to actually go through the amendment process.
This is why it's time to change the constitution since it isn't 1776 and it doesn't take us a month-long journey to get to DC. Make the Scotus a 20 year commitment. And cut everything else in Congress in half. And the oval.
18. One gets replaced every two years. Two per president.
I've got just two words for those fuckheads: Biden Rule.
Sorry to have to break this to these guys (not really), but this is the world they wanted. People like me warned them when they did away with the filibuster that the move was likely to have consequences. When they rammed through Obamacare on reconciliation, people like me told them that resorting to political loopholes might just create a world they weren't too crazy about. When they decided the pen and phone were sufficient, we tried to suggest that just because they could get away with it under the rules didn't mean they should want to do so.
Well, now the Republicans played their game. Don't blame them. They're just playing in the brave new world you decided to create.
Except the Republicans, in this case, were merely abiding by the rule established by Joe Biden when he was head of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
In 1944 our twenty somethings were storming the beaches of Normandy and defeating fascism. In 1955, they were inventing Rock and Roll. IN 1965, they were going to space and then to the moon. Today they ask for extensions on their term papers because the resutls of a lawful and peaceful election traumatized them.
Hard to not wonder if we are not doomed.
Yes because this one case is representative of the entire student population. Pop quiz, what percentage of university students are actively engaged in calls for mandated diversity and safe spaces? Most of these actions are backed by tiny percentages of student populations.
Students said in did stupid things in 1944 just as they do today. The difference is the internet and social media promote and give a platform to stupidity. Idiotic ideologies are more visible today but are they more pervasive? The latter is an open question.
That is a good question. A majority? likely not. But this is very widespread and hardly unusual. Yes, it represents and extreme, but it represents a fairly common extreme. If this is a common extreme, how much other bullshit like this goes on that you don't hear about because it is less outrageous or public?
The extremes are not all there is to the truth. But they often can be indicative of general trends.
Let's not forget that in 1944, '54 and '64, if you got too whiny on a college campus, you could be expelled and your draft boards notified of your availability for military service.
Kids today can bitch without fear of being expelled and possibly sent to war.
More important and/or more indicatively, the culture at large has shifted with or around these students.
We went from this and to this.
Regardless whether these idiots are one squeaky wheel or three out of four wheels, they're getting a disproportionate amount of grease and it's still not preventing them from squeaking.
And, IMO, that's the issue in-and-of itself. No amount of grease will silence these squeaks. The wheel should be removed and discarded or fixed. The other 1-3 wheels and the cart itself shouldn't have to suffer because these wheels can't shut the hell up.
The wheel should be removed and discarded or fixed.
How do you do that?
-Rico Suave
Somebody should really invent an app, like ?ber, only for car repair.
/sarc
Um. A woodchipper?
Pop quiz, what percentage of university students are actively engaged in calls for mandated diversity and safe spaces? Most of these actions are backed by tiny percentages of student populations.
And guess what? They're the ones that end up having an outsized influence on the cultural environment of the college campus, because the people who don't agree with this shit can't be bothered to organize and tell these busy-bodies to shut the fuck up.
Think about it. The radical students that occupied administrative buildings during the Vietnam War and cut classes to go protest are currently professors, deans, and administrators--and the ones who've retired so far have trained a whole generation of like-minded individuals to take their place, which has ensconced radical progressivism as the de facto culture of the college campus.
Until the people who disagree with this bullshit actually come out and force these assholes to back down on a repeated basis, this isn't going to change. And it will likely involve real, actual violence as a means to do so, because the western left considers their political beliefs to be their religion and don't just stop because they're outvoted once or twice.
+1
The radicals drive society, because they are the only ones who care where it is going. But this time, the rest of the populace took notice and raised its hands, and the radicals are going bat-shit crazy over the result.
Students said in did stupid things in 1944 just as they do today. The difference is the internet and social media promote and give a platform to stupidity.
I think the differences go a little deeper than that. Sure, some students did idiotic things back then. But, they were identified as idiots and dressed down accordingly. Today, they're calling the shots. Back then, an idiot demanding that the world bow down and conform to his or her whims would have been afraid of the reaction of normal people who aren't particularly interested in bowing down to SJW presumptions. Today, the normal person not particularly interested in bowing down to SJW presumptions has to be afraid of the idiot demanding that the world bow down and conform to his or her whims.
Even if the percentage of students is relatively low, it certainly appears that the amount of appeasement or outright buy-in from professors and administrators has increased. I wonder if that has a multiplier effect.
The other thing that's changed is the rapid proliferation of administrators who can increase their ranks and budgets by catering to a small number of students' ideological demands.
Just watch the movie "the best years of our lives" great movie but very similar to day. one thread of the movie is A war veteran comes home and his snowflake college educated son telling his father there was no need for war with japan. good movie made in 1946 with at least one actor an actual vet who lost his arms
IN 1965, they were going to space and then to the moon.
Nope, most of those guys were in their thirties.
Lots of 'em in Vietnam though.
Yeah. Fair point. I was just trying to think of the people who were doing things besides smoking dope and listening the Beatles. It is amazing how sad kids have become. My dad joined the Marine Corps at 18, went to war, came back and was married with kids before he was 23. And these assholes can't handle the other side winning an election or someone around them saying something they disagree with.
Not to get all 'the proletariat will inherit the earth here', but this is mostly upper-middle class and upper class urban bullshit. Rural and inner city kids are still as rough as they used to be. And the ones that don't tend to end up moving to urban communities with their like-minded brethren.
It is. My nephews who grew up middle class in small towns are nothing like this. And the teens and 20 somethings I have seen in the Army are nothing like this. This sort of shit, whether it be protesting Vietnam or taking up the leftist cause of the day has always been the province of the upper class kids who have the luxury of doing it. Everyone thinks of the 1960s as being all of these hippies. Talk to people who were actually young then and they will tell you hippies were this tiny minority of rich kids. Everyone else was too busy getting a job and trying to get by to be a hippie.
I think a lot more than just rich kids were protesting Vietnam. Wasn't there a groundswell of support to pull out across socioeconomic lines?
Not really. The big Vietnam protests didn't start until the late 60s when they did away with the college deferments. College kids didn't get all militant about the Vietnam war until they faced the real possibility of going. And having talked to numerous people who went to the really big protests in Washington in the early 70s, it was all college kids and a big party. They were apparently wonderful places to get laid, which of course drove up attendance.
Err, there were no 20 somethings among those first Astronauts, they were mostly WW2 vets and all were in their 30's.
In fact the Youngest American to ever make it to Space remains Sally Ride who went up at the age of 32.
Basically the requirements to become an Astronaut in the US are so strict that it is pretty much impossible to even be accepted into the Astronaut training program before you are 28 or so.
Also, the 20 year olds of today serving on the battlefields of Afghanistan would literally kick the asses of those sad sacks that stormed the beaches of Normandy even using the WW2 equipment. In terms of training and readiness levels the run of the mill infantryman of today exceeds that of special forces units of the 1940's.
Finally, lets be real Those 20 somethings in 1944, were conscripts, they weren't there because of their own personal initiative and for the rest, sure they accomplished some great things but they also had their share of wastes of flesh too. Sure the snowflakes of the social justice crowd are something new but realistically they make up a very small percentage of the millenial generation and for the rest they are no different from the generations that came before them (except Gen X that is and that is just because we rock)
some were conscripts but a lot of them were volunteers. Beyond that, you tell me how this kid would ever storm Normandy or Iwo Jima even if you did draft him? The point is they were dealing with big problems and doing amazing things. The fact that they were draft and circumstances forced that upon them is besides the point. They were still doing it.
This millennial?
Hell no I'm pretty sure if he was drafted in 1944 he'd have died in a "training accident" long before he got out of basic.
The millennials slogging through Afghanistan however, they are a different story.
(except Gen X that is and that is just because we rock)
Fuck you man, you can't define me....
*resumes slacking*
I disagree. As an older millennial who spent the last few years on a college campus, I saw a lot of sympathy for the snowflakes. Sure there may have only been a handful of agitators, but they had at least partial sympathy from a large proportion of campus (students and faculty alike). You can see this in the subject matter of student government referenda.
In general, the "silent majority" supported the snowflakes up to the point that the snowflake interfered with them getting their degrees.
The smart ones are keeping their heads, down and studyng something worthwhile. We only get to hear about the idiots, and there were plenty of idiots in the '40's, '50's, and '60's.
Most likely to graduate unemployable.
A stream of EEOC complaints when not hired.
I realize that there's a generational divide here, and that in some small way my generation (and the one before mine) is responsible for your generation feeling the need to coddle and be coddled, but fuck this guy. Fuck him, his social justice bullshit, his socially acceptable racism, and his inferiority complex. It's obvious the concept of earning anything through merit and effort is completely foreign to him, but his failure to learn the barest measure of self-sufficiency does not convey any obligation whatsoever on the people unfortunate enough to be around him.
May the ghost of John Wayne pistol whip him into something like manhood.
Also, this is how you get two terms of Trump.
Fuck this guy. I have known people who lost parents and even children in the middle of work or school and somehow managed to make it through. That guy is pathetic. And treating him with anything but utter contempt and scorn is not only bad for society, it is bad for him. Someone needs to kick him in the ass and make him grow up before its too late and reality does.
I'll go one farther: Fuck this guy, and everyone and everyone that supports, agrees, and/or enables his bullshit perpetual victimhood. Fuck whoever raised this kid into thinking the world owes him some eternal debt of gratitude simply for being born.
I was just thinking, the best thing that could happen to this guy is that someone kicks the shit out of him and takes his lunch money every day while calling him the n word until he gets mad enough to fight back. Sometimes character has to be forged.
First time that happened he would either go suicidal, homicidal, title IX, or NAACP. Possibly all of the above.
I don't know if he needs that much. But at some point people need to have real problems so that they stop inventing fake ones.
He's beyond saving guys.
As a fan of Aristotle I must say he blatantly points out his belief in Nicomachaen Ethics that after a certain period, if you never received the right sort of upbringing, then you could not be taught. I know the crybaby would say #not my ethics, but I always thought Aristotle was right on that point.
Hell, many black people in their sixties and seventies would shake their heads in astonishment if they were to read this article.
If I were a black person who came of age under Jim Crow and spent my whole life struggling and working so that my kids would have a chance to go to a place like Penn, I would hold this kid is utter contempt. What would someone like Henry Aaron who grew up one of 9 kids in a share croppers shack, had to play in the negro leagues at first because MLB wouldn't have him, and then had to face death threats and being called names because he had the nerve to break a white man's record have to say to this kid? I can't help but think Aaron would vomit a little bit when confronted with him.
Yep. Last semester in college I had a baby, lost my mother three days later, took in my little sister and had to fight in court to keep her father from getting custody of her. Still managed to graduate with a 3.8. You do what you have to do. I have no sympathy for anyone who expects to get everything handed to them on a silver platter.
fuck this guy.
This X 1,000,000,000 Fuck him and everyone like him. Guess what, snowflake: Life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid. Harden the fuck up.
More than anything, fuck all of his enablers-the ones that perpetuate this kind of crap! And as for Social Justice Warriors: they are far from social and would not be able to strike up a friendship with anyone; they have no idea what justice is all about; and are the furthest things from warrior types that humanity ever experienced!
Yeah. Yet we're expected to believe that colleges and universities are bastions of educational excellence and that those without degrees are inherently less educated. If the schools have people like this, they don't have actual standards. A significant amount of the people who earn degrees do not even deserve it.
A degree has become a meaningless credential. At some point, I wonder if it will be a negative.
When you come from the environment where every body gets a prize and no one fails, what can you expect? There is no preparation for the real life if everyone is trained/indoctrinated in the philosophy that there is only success for everyone; failure, or at least the idea that people DO FAIL, is never brought up as a possibility.
I have to ask, who the fuck hires guys like this? I mean, if this guy came into my office looking for a job, this story would hang like a big, bright, neon light over his head saying "DON'T HIRE ME". I'm assuming engaging in this sort of crap isn't life and career destroying. Otherwise, it would have died the death it deserves a long time ago. So, what I can't figure out is who the hell wakes up in the morning and says to themselves "I'm going to hire some SJW snowflake who's going to treat me with contempt while I pay him for barely doing his job and spend every waking hour of his time looking for some excuse to sue me."?
This kid is probably running a scam to try to get an Ivy League degree without actually attending class or doing any academic work.
government agencies, social activism non-profits, peace corps, local coffee shops, retail, etc.
"Tell us what your problem is"
"Shut up and listen!"
"Ok... isn't that what we were doing?"
"HATE MONGER!"
and on it goes
Christ, what an asshole.
This student is such a mangina!
Don't compare him to a vagina. Vaginas are tough enough to pass another human being through, and yet also gentle and fun and awesome.
*tears up*
That....that was beautiful, X.
They can also take quite a lickin' and keep right on going...
Wink wink, nudge nudge.
You mean keep right on coming?
'In 1944 our twenty somethings were storming the beaches of Normandy...'
And they were all issued with blankets and their rifles had a safety catch.
See, just like blankies and safe spaces, everything will be just fine.....
"I don't mean to come down too harshly on a single student who's having a rough time."
You should, though. This student needs to be criticized harshly, especially since he is trying to silence other people's opinions -- don't back down to people like this, their goal is to control you though pity and sympathy. Don't give them any.
Don't blame the student, blame the propa ganda.
When Robby doesn't even add his obligatory "Even though the study of systemic racism and theories of privilege are valid" disclaimer, that's when you know it's bad.
I would love for Robby to meet and talk with Kat Timpf, who similarly finds absurd liberal campus shenanigans for National Review and is very witty.
I don't mean to come down too harshly on a single student who's having a rough time. It could be the case that the university is doing a particularly bad job of providing him with the resources he needs to succeed.
ENB or whoever sits next to Robby in the Reason office needs to slap him upside the head randomly a few times throughout the day and/or throw shit at him.
by 'shit', do you mean random objects, or actual feces? I'm cool with both, I just need to set the proper visual in my mind.
I've always the pictured the reason office as staffed by chimps. Maybe not the writers, but at least the support staff (administrative assistants, etc.) So I'm picturing him getting pelted with actual feces.
That would explain many of the website "features."
I can't imagine how one can even begin to entertain a student as insufferable and disconnected as this one in the sense that Robby did in the aforementioned quote. How can anyone take this seriously? It's so obviously insane that it borders on art.
Robby has a love/hate relationship with social justice. You'll understand once you get to know him.
What the hell does that even mean, "the resources he needs to succeed"? The university needs to give him more water or coal? It's a goddamn school. By being there he's already far more privileged than the vast majority of students in the country.
And don't forget he is going to Penn. That is an Ivy. I would be surprised if 10% of the applicants every year are admitted. How exactly does anyone good enough to get admitted to Penn not have the resources to write a fucking term paper on time?
You forget that in his case "good enough" likely means Affirmative Action.
I've openly volunteered to bring Robby up here to northern Ontario to learn the skills of a man and stop being such a mincing fop. Hell, I've offered to pay him.
Are you from the Sioux? One of my best friends grew up up there. That really is the great, cold, north woods. Robby wouldn't last five minutes.
Thunder Bay area originally, down south during teenage years, Nickel Belt now. Go north enough and it's basically the same it was two hundred years ago.
Yeah. I would love to drive up there. I have a fascination with the north and the arctic. I would love to drive from Toronto to Vancouver sometime or take the ALCAN highway.
+1 lost coureur des bois
What if he has a flat on the drive up, smart guy? Are you gonna change his tire, or will he just expire on the road side? Seems awfully risky.
Are you gonna change his tire, or will he just expire on the road side?
You have successfully described my training plan, so maybe?
I took a class in the history and practice of Zoroastrianism at UCLA. UCLA is in an area that's heavily populated with refugees from the Iranian Revolution of 1979, and there is a sizable Zoroastrian community in the area.
It was a night class, so they opened it up to registration from the local community. About half the class was made up of Zoroastrians. Listening to lectures and discussions on the history and practice of a religion you believe in from an academic perspective is tough enough--like creationists taking a class on evolution. But this was much worse. It was traumatic.
At one point, the professor systematically proved from the archaeology and the historic record that half the people in the class were the product of generation after generation of inbreeding. These were the children of an oppressed minority who fled persecution in Iran--only to be told [shown] by a professor that they were all the product of inbreeding.
There was anger. There was shouting. There were tears.
Everyone survived.
Sounds like a fun time.
What a waste of human capital.
This guy got into U Penn?
He got into Penn, but I can almost guarantee you he didn't earn it.
I am sure that sooner or later he will find himself in another kind of pen....
Yeah, a play pen in a campus safe space after whatever Trump's next "traumatizing" EO is. This person has the emotional and psychological maturity of a 2 year old.
Yeah, and you can bet that some Asian-American kid who blows him out of the water academically didn't. Fuck these racist admission quotas.
-jcr
Now, now ... It's not racist any more. The proper term is diversity, dontcha know?
Maybe 40 acres and a mule would help?
I think the main thing this fragile snowflake wants is for all white people everywhere to bow down, kiss his feet, and beg forgiveness. And give him half their shit. At least half.
Can you imagine any of these snowflakes getting along in the workplace? I can't. Seeing as everything being done by robots and all of us living a life of leisure is at least 20 years away, either they grow the fuck up or they have a dismal future ahead of them.

Fuck a you, squirrels!
They're not headed for a workplace. They're headed for the bureaucracy.

The only thing they know is power and how to covet it.
That's why when people say that these sorts are harmless I quickly rebuke them. These are the people who will be in charge of our bureaucracy and will make sure that we will never ever forget how oppressed they are. This guy may seem harmless, but he's the sort of self serving asshole who will be willing to climb the ladder to power and make sure that the world is molded his way.
"Imagine being a black student on Penn's campus with even one of these types of professors,"
Imagine not building your whole life around the idea that you are uniquely oppressed due to your race and moving on to more constructive things.
This guy is in for a hell of a rough life.
"When students claim victim status, it often comes across like this is the goal in and of itself, rather than the means to some end."
Gosh, you think?
There's great power to be mined from victimhood, to be sure. But, every time, it's exhilarating to watch a Reason contributor discover for the first time that perverse incentives can be created even in the noblest of schemes.
I have an acquaintance who is exactly like this guy. He went to one of the best public high schools in the state, got his undergrad at DePaul, and his MPA from Northwestern. Has a great job and a decent looking white woman but yet if you listen to him or read his FB postings, it sounds like his world is 1960's Birmingham, Alabama.
Him and I get along for the most part but there is some animosity between us and a class divide. He grew up in a nice neighborhood in Chicago and lived a middle class life while I grew up with a single Mom who had to work two jobs at times and buy us hand me downs.
Guess which one is the entitled one?
Sounds to me like you're entitled to kick his whiny ass if he mentions the word privilege within 15 feet of you.
I feel sorry for the guy. He's financially better off than I am but is miserable. To live a life constantly playing the victim seems exhausting and not productive.
does anyone know a happy prog? anyone?
when your entire belief system is a fraud with no basis in reality, you're going to be miserable.
when you entire belief system relies on victimization and identity politics, you're going to be miserable.
when none of your solutions ever work, and you have to blame outside forces for everything.....
you get the point
Has a great job and a decent looking white woman
The way this is framed is hilarious to me, like he went to the Attractive White Woman Store and bought the newest model.
Hahahaha, yeah, I could have phrased that better.
Why? You mean he DIDN'T go to the Attractive White Woman Store? That's where i do all my shopping.
Did he go to St. Ignatius in Chicago?
Sounds like the University of Pennsylvania is doing a good job of preparing Fisher for his exciting career as that crazy bum who stands on street corners screaming obscenities at everyone who walks by.
Chances are that he will get a job with a university or one of the alphabet government agencies.
Or in an HR department somewhere, and eventually "VP of Diversity and Inclusion" or some such bullshit.
Penn is training him to be Al Sharpton.
I believe Fisher is in the Bernie Sanders School of Leftist Activism at UPenn.
"I don't mean to come down too harshly on a single student who's having a rough time. It could be the case that the university is doing a particularly bad job of providing him with the resources he needs to succeed."
And there it is, the Saove Shuffle!
Do you like Trump?
This is how you get Trump.
This guy needs to head to downtown Newark, the south side of Chicago or South Central LA and tell his black brethren in those locations how he's been othered and the travails he's enduring at an Ivy League school. I'm sure they'll sympathize with his plight and tell him they're in solidarity with him.
They would probably tell him to fuck off. There's a huge disconnect between the black folks living in the urban areas like the Southside of Chicago or South Central and black people like this guy.
Black folks like Fisher, despite always talking about racism, in some form has some disdain for poor blacks. He doesn't give a shit about them.
By "tell him to fuck off" do you mean "beat him within an inch of his privileged life, take all his money and tell him if he says a word they'll kill his whole family"?
Because if this whiny little dipshit showed up and told his story to people his age in any of those locations, that's the best he could hope for.
his parents have failed him. when life gets hard, the absolute worst thing to do is to tuck foetal and scream safe space.
"It is not enough that you are sorry for the injustices caused by your people."
Wut?
My people? Who's the racist here?
My people (assumed to be all white people) are being held accountable for the actions of a very few other white people five generations ago? Who is being unreasonable? Who isn't listening?
The fact is, my people, my ACTUAL ancestors were not even in this country until the first half of the twentieth century. But apparently I'm responsible for his state of despair solely because I'm (mostly) white? Who's the racist?
This whining little tool needs to be a whole lot more introspective and a lot less political. Racism is the act of judging people by the color of their skin rather than their actions. Who's the racist here?
racism is prejudice based on race, which is the only thing the progs got
so they have their own special definition to avoid being called racists. you know what is it
You say "five generations ago", but did you know in one family, it's been just two generations? In fact, the president of the United States 20 years before the Civil War has grandchildren that are still alive.
Meanwhile, we have grandmothers in their early 30s in some parts of America.
Some of those grandmothers are GILFs.
"That is the epitome of privilege: assuming that everyone had the same comfortable life that you did."
Yet it's fine for him to assume that everyone but he had a comfortable life.
It could be the case that the university is doing a particularly bad job of providing him with the resources he needs to succeed.
Its offering him classes, a library, presumably housing and meals. What more does he need? Perhaps the "resource" he needs that isn't being provided is consequences for being an ass, like flunking a few classes.
Somehow, I doubt that's what Robby means, though.
What could his professors do to assuage his feelings of trauma?
When did it get to be a professor's job to assuage a student's feelings of trauma, especially about something that had nothing at all to do with the professor's class or even the university?
This is the frustrating thing about Robby - the way he uncritically accepts premises that are, on examination, absurd.
So, even the Ivy League niggers are lazy and shiftless
When are you coming to Houston?
Fuck you. get out of here, your only goal is to make reason look like the Den racists you assume it to be. Go pound sand you useless piece of human waste.
No kidding. What a total piece of shit.
You're right. Spoofers are total pieces of shit.
Fuck off racist scum.
You get the hell out.
Wife: *crosses arms, sighs, ignores husband*
Husband: What's wrong?
Wife: Nothing!!! Jeeze!!
Husband: Something must be wrong
Wife: If you don't know, I can't help you!
The truth is, you as a single person cannot make up for the horrific things that white people have done to us throughout human history.
Apparently all of human history only goes back to the 1300s cause before then European and African nations were on fairly equal footing.
Also, this kid needs Jesus.
Fuck you, Jim, you're not marginalized if you're at an Ivy League school.
"Imagine being a black student on Penn's campus with even one of these types of professors," wrote Fisher. "I had three. And each one of those professors either did not care to learn about their white privilege, or lied to me and said that they did."
Let's see- this kid attempted to lecture his professors about their racism, and they blew him off.
The only honorable course of action is to get onto the roof of a suitably tall building, and hurl yourself to the sidewalk below.
That'll show Whitey.
OK, cool. Then I'll stop trying.
Kick the flaming racist shitbag out of school and be done with it.
People like me who read Fisher's column were listening.
Of course you were, Teen Beat Reporter. Of course you were.
When I start to think things like "maybe he'd be happier at Howard or Moorehouse", I remember that if he went to Howard or Moorehouse, he wouldn't be able to claim racism and play the victim.
Also, many studies indicate that historically black schools have done a better-than-average job of maintaining academic rigor and high standards. I assume that's because they can't really afford not to.
To be honest, I suspect this guy has some mental-health issues going on. In particular, a common trait in many personality disorders is getting all bent out of shape when others can't read your mind: "it's not my job to tell you what I want. It's your job to give it to me!"
No one should really be shutting up, least of all the people teaching the classes.
Keep digging, Junior. You'll get that gig at Salon, some day.
"I did not want to step foot into another white space until I made sure that my mental health was restored."
Great, but writing an article before his mental health was restored.
"You have to be invested in stopping racism and oppression every day, not just on your free time."
No, you ignorant moron, I do not have to do one damned thing to PROVE to you I am adequately non racist.
If I leave you alone and never talk you in my life, that should be enough to make you leave me alone and not insist that I have to kiss your ass to be appropriately "woke".
Fuck off and leave people alone, they aren't here to serve you. Because if they had to serve you based on purely your wishes and desires we'd call that slavery and slavery is illegal....
Today, of all days, the 152nd anniversary of Congress passing the 13th amendment.
If I had a child like this in college, I would demand he pay me back the tuition I scrimped and saved so that he could go to a nice school like UP.
If you had a kid like that, good luck with your demand.... 🙂
Holy smokes - - my brother, the smartest kid in the city when we were growing up, applied and was accepted to every college he wanted, except Penn. He went to MIT instead. This article has taken Penn down a notch in my eyes. They should have kicked this kid out when he began whining.
So. A student likely admitted to a university beyond his actual qualifications in order to fill a diversity quota lacks the ability to clearly express his needs and desires in the English language. All he can manage to do is string together a number of common cliches about race in an inarticulate effort to paint an emotional portrait about his inability to deal with the requirements of being a student at an elite university.
This is my shocked face.
Since we obviously can't do anything right by this little twit, do we actually LOSE anything if we belabor him with a golf club, just for shits and giggles?
I can suggest the poor young man attend an HBC. Down here in NC there's 4 of them less than a 90 minute drive from my house; Shaw, St. Aug, NC Central and A&T Greensboro. Now I can't promise they bar white people from employment there nor can promise they bar any white person from enrolling.
the university is doing a particularly bad job of providing him with the resources he needs to succeed.
If someone is providing you with everything and suckling you like the titty-baby you are, you aren't really succeeding, are you?
So many thoughts, so little space...
First, as an alumnus of Penn, I am incensed that an idiot like this is currently enrolled. Not surprised, just incensed.
Second, that this represents a minority of students, i don't think so. My own daughter (who by the way is much smarter than this fool) was unable to get accepted at Penn, has this type of discussion with me all the time: since i am racist, i have no idea that i am not. I cannot recognize my own privilege. What's more, is that if, as a member of an oppressed identity group, i do not believe i am oppressed, it is because i cannot recognize that, and must be educated, or liberated despite my own insistence that it is not needed, but must be done merely because i am oppressed and can't do it for myself (applies to blacks, women, gays, etc....)
Third, this was actually predicted a century ago, and there is a brilliant exposition with a video by a guy named Alfonzo Rachel : http://alfonzorachel.com/2325/.....tuskegee-u
He responded to Michelle Obama's graduation speech at Tuskegee, the home of Booker T Washington, who he quotes, saying that BTW warned against race hustlers, etc. Since these were more modern terms of endearment (lol) i thought he was kidding, however, it turns out he was right. BTW did actually warn against them, using essentially those same terms over a century ago. And yet, here we are.. we are all bozos/racists/oppressors on this bus.
Well the writer nails it. The goal is to be a perpetual victim. It's chic and romantic to put oneself in the role of the long-suffering victim of oppression, and you can use the imaginary jackboot on your neck as an excuse for not taking responsibility for your life. It's rather pathetic and cowardly. So of course he doesn't have any answers, that would mean ACTION would have to be taken, his status as victim might be challenged. We can't have that.
The prof showed pictures of plantation slaves, I assume in a history class. So history should not have happened and we can't talk about history? ALL of history is nothing but conquests and slaughter. Best to pretend it isn't I guess.
He doesn't want to be surrounded by whiteness--well, there are still a few black colleges and used to be more of them. Go there.
Something the victims were never told is that the world doesn't love anyone. White man? The world is indifferent. Bosses and coworkers don't love you, you are lucky if they tolerate you. School is hard for most people and plenty of white people flunk out. Somehow these people have a fantasy that for white people there are unicorns pulling golden carriages waiting for them when they get off work and cherubs flying around their heads. There are white men 50 yrs old bagging groceries at my local super market. White people are not fabulously happy. Some of them, like me, work 2 jobs. White people have crippling illness just like everyone else. They are unhappy because they are comparing themselves to something that doesn't exist.
Blacks and Latinos have made it clear that nothing, absolutely nothing you do or say is enough to satisfy them, so why are we even trying anymore? Whiten people have had enough of this self flagellating in order to appease a group of completely ignorant, spiteful ingrates. If we say nothing, we are complicit in "institutionalized racism", which is nothing but an anti-white code word. If we speak up, we are hijacking the conversation and speaking over black voices. Minority groups continue to make their happiness white peoples responsibility, and then spew venom and hatred any time we actually make an attempt to make a difference. You'll notice that you never see Asian people complaining like this. Why? Because their communities aren't cesspools of failure, ignorance, and violence. Stop trying. It's time to treat blacks like adults, instead of perpetuating this white man's burden bullshit where we act like it's our responsibility to fix their problems. If they wanted to be treated as equals, then it's time to take equal responsibility. Shed your white guilt, stand up for your race, stop being cowed and intimidated by these mobs of angry, ignorant failures.
This is insane. I would like to believe this student is being intentionally vague as part of a ruse to trade on victim-hood as though it were currency to buy good grades. That's the best case scenario.. Unfortunately I think these accusations are all too real (to the man making them, not to the objective world to which he belongs.) But it's almost a daily thing for me to either see/hear/read about some insane claim like this that everybody is racist and the most racist thing you can do is not be racist. I even experience it too. I have seen many BLM protests and anti-trump protest and others where black people there to protest tell white people there to protest for the very same cause that groups of black people feel threatened by even just a handful of white protesters there and segregating themselves from a group of people there on friendly and supportive terms. At what point did the black community (especially millennial aged) turn MLK's vision on its head. Judging people not on the content of their character, but the color of their skin. They might as well do a special protest event this month, for Black history month where gather at MLK's grave, dig him up and take turns rolling him over.
By all means, let such people continue unobstructed. As liberals linked to the Democratic Party, they can't help but make this even worse:
"The whole Democratic Party is now a smoking pile of rubble: In state government things are worse, if anything. The GOP now controls historical record number of governors' mansions, including a majority of New England governorships. Tuesday's election swapped around a few state legislative houses but left Democrats controlling a distinct minority. The same story applies further down ballot, where most elected attorneys general, insurance commissioners, secretaries of state, and so forth are Republicans." http://www.vox.com/policy-and-.....ile-rubble
Looks like Captain Snowflake left his email address on his article, too. Wonder what kind of replies he's been getting since this has been posted.
"I did not want to step foot into another white space until I made sure that my mental health was restored."
1. How do you restore that which never existed?
2. How will you know when you are done?
3. According to Phil, you only have six weeks before you melt into nothingness.
College classes are supposed to consist of dialogue between highly-learned experts?the professors?and curious, bright novices?the students."
No, Robby. If I'm spending the time and money to take a college class, I want the professor to actually teach me new things.
Uggghhh!
Has anybody checked out to see what Soave looks like? No fuckin wonder he writes the bullshit he does. He's a full-on dweeb. Gross! God. He's so girly lookin I'd fuck him, if he werent also so ugly
Fisher's comments take the concept of collective responsibility to an extreme point: white professors have a responsibility to compensate for injustices committed by others, past, present, and future.
