In Farewell Address, Obama Condemns Outrage-Industrial Complex, Overlooks Failure to Constrain Feds
Washington believed that self-government was the protector of liberty and prosperity. Obama believes that, too-minus the "self" part.


If there was a single, enduring theme in President Obama's farewell address, it was best conveyed via the following laugh line: "If you're tired of arguing with strangers on the internet, try to talk with one in real life," he said.
Indeed, Obama evidently believes strongly in the power of facts and persuasion—of just sitting down with each other, listening, and having a rational discussion. "Science and reason," held sway in his day, though he worries that the American people increasingly self-segregate themselves into partisan bubbles, beholden to entirely separate news and information.
Obama pleaded with his audience to disengage from the cycle of outrage and try to find common ground. He said:
In his own farewell address, George Washington wrote that self-government is the underpinning of our safety, prosperity, and liberty, but "from different causes and from different quarters much pains will be taken.to weaken in your minds the conviction of this truth;" that we should preserve it with "jealous anxiety;" that we should reject "the first dawning of every attempt to alienate any portion of our country from the rest or to enfeeble the sacred ties" that make us one.
We weaken those ties when we allow our political dialogue to become so corrosive that people of good character are turned off from public service; so coarse with rancor that Americans with whom we disagree are not just misguided, but somehow malevolent. We weaken those ties when we define some of us as more American than others; when we write off the whole system as inevitably corrupt, and blame the leaders we elect without examining our own role in electing them.
It's a message that hasn't actually resonated all that well with Obama's base—after all, these are the people who joined candidate Hillary Clinton in denouncing entire swaths of the populace as "deplorable" and drove them into the arms of con man. But Obama deserves credit for recognizing this problem and urging empathy.
He deserves no credit, however, for, in his words, "working to put the fight against terrorism on a firm legal footing":
That's why, for the past eight years, I've worked to put the fight against terrorism on a firm legal footing. That's why we've ended torture, worked to close Gitmo, and reform our laws governing surveillance to protect privacy and civil liberties.
Torture may have ended: illegal drone strikes have not. The U.S. bombed Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia—all during Labor Day weekend this year. The Obama administration fully embraced the Bush doctrine that war-making was the prerogative of the executive branch—that the president, rather than Congress, could do whatever he pleased in the abstract name of national security.
This weakening of the U.S. system of checks and balances has already proven detrimental to the cause of limited government. It will only get worse when Donald Trump assumes office. As the Cato Institute's Gene Healy observed in the pages of Reason, Obama has left Trump a loaded gun.
Obama also touched on his successes—many of them legitimate. The president deserves credit for normalizing relations with Cuba and supporting marriage equality. He's also a decent man and a good father and husband, and worthy role model.
But for all of Obama's appeals to civility, facts, and common sense, his presidency should be remembered for its sustained assault on an obvious truth: massive, unrestricted government is dangerous. Recall the Washington quote he referenced: "Self-government is the underpinning of our safety, prosperity, and liberty. But from different causes and quarters, much pain will be taken to weaken in your minds the conviction of this truth."
Obama's record suggests that he believes government itself, not self-government, is the underpinning of our safety, prosperity, and liberty. As Trump prepares to take office—every bit the savior figure to his supporters that Obama was to his (and then some)—it seems clear that the current president has weakened the American people's conviction that they are capable of saving themselves.

As I suspected, the quoted portions of Washington's Farewell address are part of an eloquent appeal for preserving the Union of the states - that is, keeping North and South, East and West, as part of a common country.
Washington said that
"...every part of our country...must derive from union an exemption from those broils and wars between themselves, which so frequently afflict neighboring countries not tied together by the same governments, which their own rival ships [rivalships?] alone would be sufficient to produce, but which opposite foreign alliances, attachments, and intrigues would stimulate and embitter. Hence, likewise, they will avoid the necessity of those overgrown military establishments which, under any form of government, are inauspicious to liberty, and which are to be regarded as particularly hostile to republican liberty. In this sense it is that your union ought to be considered as a main prop of your liberty, and that the love of the one ought to endear to you the preservation of the other."
To repeat, "overgrown military establishments" are "particularly hostile to republican liberty."
Oh, and
"One of the expedients of party to acquire influence within particular districts is to misrepresent the opinions and aims of other districts. You cannot shield yourselves too much against the jealousies and heartburnings which spring from these misrepresentations; they tend to render alien to each other those who ought to be bound together by fraternal affection."
So if, for instance, a party wants to get support in New York and California, it represents, say, the Midwest and South as full of deplorables, hicks and racists.

that true, but many people miss why he and many others believe this. it's because they think government are just normal human beings like the rest of us. they don't see the separation that having power over others creates. it's the same reason that they don't see much legitimacy in the argument that the private sector should do certain things and not the government. they take the notion of "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" literally rather than seriously. to that end, the distinction never occurs to them.
my biggest problem with his speech and with most politicians empty words during and since the election is the notion that when a democrat or republican talks, they're talking for half the country and addressing the other half. it never occurs to either side that they don't represent that many people. i'd say they just don't care, and that's true too, but i also think it just simply doesn't sink in. and that's it's own special kind of obliviousness.

Trump's most diehard supporters (like the ones who would bother attending a rally) are definitely on another level, but the majority aren't quite that bad. With Obama though, it feels like almost every prog worships him and thinks he did no wrong; every criticism you can bring up is the fault of a Republican Congress. They say he's the best president of their lifetime. You may remember that Obama supported DOMA in 2008, and only switched sides when it was already inevitable that a court decision would force the states to end the tyrannical oppression of not giving people pieces of paper. Similarly with respecting states' legalization of MJ.

He spend the last several years covering Obama's administration's systematic assault on freedom of speech and individual rights of students on universities. Obama has been the Tsar of political correctness. Worse than merely getting offended at 'offensive' speech, he has sought to punish it, to criminalize normal sexual activity, and even to bring that ethos beyond the university and into the realm of criminal and civil law (this is the guy whose administration was on the brink of criminalizing public disbelief in global warming, recall?).
Obama's recent attacks on 'political correctness' are therefore as hypocritical and disingenuous as they could possibly be. He's a politician who is trying to salvage his legacy, and the election showed him that PC totalitarianism may not in fact be the right side of history; it may actually be a sinking ship, and he's trying to untie himself from it. Under this administration, the government gained the authority to penalize you for not buying what it deems inadequate health insurance. What you do says more about what you believe than what you say, and what Obama has done has very little to do with facts or persuasion, but a lot to do with arrogance and bullying.
Obama's a uniter, not a divider. And now we're all united in our own little groups, hating everybody in all the other groups. Even though Obama didn't invent identity politics, he damn sure benefitted from identity politics and fed that monster as much as possible. Eight years ago, the only reason you could possibly oppose Obama is if you're a racist, and today you could support Trump not just if you're a racist, but also a xenophobe, a homophobe, an Islamaphobe, a white supremacist, a Nazi, a fascist, an ignorant in-bred redneck mouth-breathing moron.....I'd say identity politics has been pretty damn successful if we've gone from all being in the single group of "racist" to a dozen or so different groups within that big ol' basket of deplorables.
