Christmas is the time of miracles, so the real guy could end up being a neo-nazi in a MAGA hat.
Hello.
The last I'd heard is that Berlin police had a Pakistani in custody.
Or, I guess I could've read the very next item....
Yeah, I meant to quote both those links, but like a Kraut after a lorry driver, I FAILED.
do the brits call them krauts, or don't they have a unique term for that too?
"Jerry", derived from "jerrycans" (an improvised gasoline bomb made from a fuel container) is really common one. "Kraut" is used, and some old timeys use, "Heinie" as a pejorative, there are others that are regional and Cockney slang as well, but I don't know of them.
I'm pretty sure you have the etymology the wrong way round. Jerrycans are just gasoline containers (not specifically as used for improvised bombs). But are named for the British epithet for Germans because they were invented by Germans.
I'm pretty sure you have the etymology the wrong way round.
'Twas explained that way to me by an authentic, honest to Sod, Limey, Zebulon. Either way is correct, since I specified, "fuel container", and during WWII, on the Allies side in Britain, was to which they were referred. The term, "Jerryrig," comes from the process of making an improvised bomb from the fuel containers, since the Army Engineers didn't have much else to fight with, as it was explained to me.
I'm not going to argue with a man whose father served in WWII and received that very explanation from him.
Jerry Can has made it into the english-english lexicon, but I've only heard it in the south, but of course, there was plenty of exposure to american english for a couple of years, so it's hardly surprising.
The Brits have a term, "Jerry Built" which is almost certainly an evolution of "Jerry rig", which is used to describe some halfassed attempt at constructing a (usually mechanical) device or a building. As far as I know, nobody confused the 'jerry' in 'jerry rig' with the term for germans.
And then you have the "Jury rig", which some brits use interchangeably with "Jerry Rig", which might or might not be valid.
Jury-rig is the older version. I suspect "jerry-rig" would just be a pun.
Well, according to everything I can find, "Jerry" came first and the can was named after that.
"Jury rigged" of which "jerryrigged" is avariation, is used much earlier than WWII. It may be that the change to "Jerry" had something to do with Germans, but improvising gasoline bombs wouldn't be the origin.
Having a parent who fought in a war does not make one an expert on the origin of words.
Is this the 'nigger-rigged' thread?
Ahem, that's "Afro-engineered" these days!
+1 And, it was even used as a compliment sometimes... As a innovative "hack" used by a poor black guy just trying to get something done on the cheap.
1) "Jerry" came first and the can was named after that.
Fine, then.
2) "Jury rigged" I never once used this term. The avariation is the one which I specifically referenced. The making of improv bombs from Jerrycans was called, and please note the explicit spelling: "j-e-r-r-y-r-i-g". Does that look like "Jury rigged", which is a nautical term, not a British Army Engineer term for a field improvised device that goes boom?
3) Having a parent who fought in a war does not make one an expert on the origin of words.
Considering that it the precise war in which the term, again since you seem to be exceptionally obtuse about this, was WWII, and in which the man served, AS AN ARMY ENGINEER MAKING BRIDGES, can qualify him as an expert explaining an Ur Exemplar from first hand experience.
The brits have a long history of 'legitimization' of malapropisms.
What with the regional accents and borrowing (indeed, the widespread use of cockney throughout the UK without the speakers actually understanding the origin of the term they use) - makes it a fertile ground for urban philologists. The widespread televised use of the term 'berk' is a good example.
Then you have the misappropriation of continental European languages, particularly Dutch. Few british users of the word 'poppycock' know where it's derived from.
The widespread televised use of the term 'berk'
I remember the last time I used that term, hurled forth in its proper context, and nearly got a punch in the face for my trouble. One of my few Ugly American moments.-)

As I recall, it came about because in the North Africa campaigns the British soldiers scrounged the battlefields for German gas cans because their own were notoriously leaky. "Jerrcan"was a way to distinguish the good stuff iover their crappy equipment.
I thought Jerry derived from Germans (like Jap was a shortened version of Japanese). Old nicknames were pretty cool - Frogs, Roast Beefs, Cousin Jonathan, Limeys, etc.
A generational thing, but about 60 years ago they might have been called "the bosche" by some limeys, although now, the term is limited to talking about expensive kitchen appliances and hand tools.
Would you prefer I call them the Hun? You racist.
ok, so
*like a Jerry after a lorry driver, I failed.
there
Also, Bob's your uncle.
See you next Tuesday.
I heard that in your case, it's actually Crusty Juggler.
Either way, it's all country matters to Monte Crusto.-)
...and his son.
"He arrived in Germany on 31 December of last year... [and] was reportedly known to police for minor crimes...."
But even if it wasn't him, he does sound like quite a productive immigrant, having already managed to amass a rap sheet in less than a year.
"Round up the usual suspects!"
It's Keyser S?ze. Keyser S?ze.
The greatest trick the truck-driver ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
Local newspapers say the driver of the lorry was followed by a bystander after jumping out of the cabin, and the man who tracked him used his mobile phone to keep in touch with police.
Early reports, etc., but sounds like they likely have the right guy.
I'm sure they have at least one Pakistani in custody. It's a numbers thing...
269) In the LGBT school choice post earlier, Scott Shackford wrote "transgender people are coming out at a younger age." And this transgender woman makes a good point that those who transition before puberty "drastically reduce later symptoms of dysphoria" because at puberty "bodies experience irreversible changes." That makes sense. If you transition before puberty, it must be far easier to make the change?fewer surgeries, better outcomes. (And less expense!)
But, but, but?that means making the decision when you're 10, 11, 12 years old. My son is 11. His thinking is short-term and materialistic. He has no social judgment, no sense of enlightened well-being. And while he may be a little immature compared to his peers, he's in no way atypical. There is no way I would trust his intuition about something like wanting to change his gender. How do I know he wouldn't change his mind six months from now?
Are there any kids that age who are mature enough to make the decision? Maybe they're homosexual and misinterpreting what their emerging romantic feelings mean? Maybe they simply don't fit into normal gender stereotypes (i.e, tomboys or effeminate boys) and are confused about what that means? This is difficult even for adults?how could a prepubescent's judgment be sound?
This is difficult even for adults?how could a prepubescent's judgment be sound?
It can't, this is just further insanity.
This is difficult even for adults?how could a prepubescent's judgment be sound?
Serious question: Any studies on regrets after making the prepubescent decision?
Probably too early. Most who have done it aren't adults yet.
One might argue they never will be.
+1 axolotl
Have you ever SEEN ONE OF THOSE? I was in Hong Kong's Ocean Park and they had two...THEY ARE HUGE! And a little creepy...very unsettling.
Serious question: Any studies on regrets after making the prepubescent decision?
I have no information on the breakdown between those that change their gender pre or post pubesence, however, Transvestites kill themselves at a much higher rate than most of the population. This would lead me to believe that changing gender solved nothing for them.
Transvestites? Or did you mean transgenders?
Ttansgenders. I misspoke/typed
Titansgender, well that changes everything.
You just keep digging in your derp pile lee. One of these days you will find one.
Titansgender, well that changes everything.
Did not Cronus castrate his father?
Did not Cronus castrate his xer father?
This would lead me to believe that changing gender solved nothing for them.
I don't think that's necessarily a fair conclusion in general (though it may be for those who do kill themselves or continue to have other serious mental health problems). It could be that some would have even worse problems without transitioning.
I tend to think that transgenderism is better considered a psychological problem than a physical/lifestyle one. But it's not impossible that transitioning to living as the other sex is the best way to deal with it for some people. There certainly seem to be some trans people who are happy enough with their post-transition lives.
True that it might not be fair in general. I have a very hard time believing that changing one's gender is a generally healthy practice though. I think that it would exacerbate an underlying problem more often than alleviate one.
If you can't accept the body you are given, then I think that says something about you and your ability to deal with life. I was born in a family of 6 ft 4 athletes. I'm 5 11 and not very athletic. I didn't get on a hormone and steroid regime in high school to try and defy the genetic hand I was dealt. I just dealt with the hand and am A-okay.
If you can't accept the body you are given, then I think that says something about you and your ability to deal with life.
I think that's true too. But then what?
All I'm saying is that it's possible that transitioning is the best available way for some people to get better at dealing with life.
All I'm saying is that it's possible that transitioning is the best available way for some people to get better at dealing with life.
Maybe that's true. Or perhaps not.Maybe not transitioning and learning to live with yourself as you are is the best course. I honestly don't know. I do know that if you are born short, you have to live with it. If you are born black, you have to live with it. If you are born stupid, you have to live with it. The vast majority of people learn to cope with the hand they are dealt without disfiguring their bodies.
In short, grow up and deal with it. It's what most people do.
But unlike the other things you list, gender dysphoria is a serious psychological issue for some people. Which, by definition, is something that is difficult to simply learn to live with.
Transgender people are a tiny minority, so it may not be reasonable to judge them based on what most people are able to do.
I really don't know either. This is just how I think of it based on my limited knowledge and experience with such things. So it's a good thing I don't have to decide.
"If you can't accept the body your are given" makes me think of that poor guy who got gender-reassigned as an infant because of a doctor's screw-up. It turned out... poorly.
But he was given a girl's body as an infant, and had all the help he could want for accepting that body - and it was, in this case, plainly not his fault that he couldn't.
So if someone is handed that sort of body/brain mismatch as the result of a congenital or genetic defect, rather than a medical error, I'm also going to be slow to blame him. I'm going to be slow to conclude that it says something about him and his ability to deal with life.
I don't really have good response to that. Maybe sometimes we are just born fucked up.
That's the best I can come up with.
I tend to think that transgenderism is better considered a psychological problem
Ya think? There is a physical reality, a fact: you are a male. There is a subjective denial of this fact: I feel like a female. Textbook psychological problem, probably categorized as a delusion, and one that is profound enough to spawn all kinds of other psychological dysfunctions.
No it's a choice! Wait no, it's not a choice! Wait, which one of those options offers maximum empowerment? Empowerment is all that matters! Vote left, be a mascot of oppression and cut your dick off. Because it's a choice, or it's not, or something.
That's all true (though I'm not convinced that "delusion" is quite the right word for it).
But the question remains, what should you do about it? As far as I can see, it's not clear that transitioning isn't the best available way to treat the issue for at least some people. If there were good evidence that some kind of therapy or drugs would work better (however you might judge that), then I'd say that was the way to go (though consenting adults should be allowed to modify their bodies however they want). But I don't see much there.
I think for now our best option is really just to admit that we don't know, and hope that research into and studies of the various ways people currently try to deal with it will help future generations.
It's unfortunate therefore that some people consider it heresy to even admit that we don't know whether gender reassignment is beneficial or not.
But the question remains, what should you do about it?
True enough. Forcing other people, by law, to indulge your mental illness shouldn't be an option, but its currently being jammed down by numerous agencies, etc.
Typically, we don't treat mental illness by facilitating and reinforcing it, though. Not sure why this should be an exception. Now, if someone wants to live out their mental illness without impinging on the rights of others, I say why not. I have some serious reservations about people who want to make a living, or at least make money, by facilitating and reinforcing the illnesses of others, but I can't say I would outlaw it, either.
I would say delusion is the correct word. There are people who believe they should have been born without legs and in order to feel good about themselves, have their legs amputated. True story. Transgender reassignment surgery is no different.
Almost like the transgender thing is a sign of mental illness...
It is. At the very least, a bona fide dissociative disorder expressed as a delusion of granduer.
Dr. ZG is of the firm medical opinion that it's a discrete form of schizophrenia, and the person simply has no grasp of demonstrable, provable, falsifiable reality.
Is this theoretical or practical? Assuming theoretical.
I agree that trans people probably "know" fairly early on which sex they identify as (assuming it's one of the fairly traditional ones). You are right that having pre-teen children make these kinds of decisions is frightening.
I would hope that the parents have had lots of very long talks with the child and that they have together explored the various orientations and identifications together - not that this has to go beyond "so you're a boy in a girl's body and you want to marry a girl when you grow up," or whatevs.
All I can say is that this is not a decision most people take lightly. I knew from an early age that I was really, really attracted to other males and I struggled with that for years. And I'm cisnormative (a regular guy) so had a relatively easier time than the less conforming gays.
very long talks. like 8-12yr long talks.
I would argue sexual attraction and gender dysmorphism are separate things. It's like comparing a person who prefers cake to an anorexic.
That's how I'm inclined to think of it as well.
Being gay, as far as I can see, isn't a problem for the person who is gay (aside from the potential social disapproval which has become much less of a thing). "Out" gay people are generally happy enough with their gayness.
Transgender people, on the other hand, do have a problem. They aren't comfortable with who/what they are and would rather be something else. So it's not just another orientation, but a real problem that calls for some kind of solution.
I don't know if there is definitely a hard line to be drawn. And I'm no expert on the matter, so I may be mischaracterizing some people's experience. But that's how it looks to me.
It really comes down to what your own stance on sanity and its relation to reality is. As far as I am aware, transgenderism is (now) the only form of body dysmorphism the psychological community treats by encouraging the person to explore it. I don't know whether that's good or bad for the health of the patient. The one friend I had who was transitioning M to F had a really horrible childhood and admitted to me that she thought her mother would have loved her more had she been born a girl. To be very clear, I don't know whether she was "typical" of the transgender set or not. But that, along with some pretty jagged mood swings led me to believe that she might not be happy or healthy whatever she does. Which, I guess makes me one of those who goes back and forth on whether gender reassignment surgery is ethical. I don't particularly care if a person wants to act/be the opposite gender from what they were born. And as long as it doesn't take me any more effort to treat that person the way they want to be treated, I will do so.
There's a reason Johns Hopkins won't perform reassignment surgery.
Because Trump won?
*** ducks ***
How'd you know?
Johns Hopkins to resume gender-affirming surgeries after nearly 40 years
David Reimer, 38; After Botched Surgery, He Was Raised as a Girl in Gender Experiment
Well that's new. I can't say I'm surprised though.
His work has been debunked by transgender advocates. Are you surprised now?
You may have answered your own question.
Do you think it's a good idea to introduce an eleven year old to cocaine or body modification? If not, then why would you put them on a lifetime course of testosterone/estrogen or remove their junk at that age?
There are always outlier cases where a chemical/genetic blurring of gender can be established, but they're few and far between.
Body modification is common in infants. Of course, they don't choose it.

But, but, but?that means making the decision when you're 10, 11, 12 years old.
This is why parents must make the decision for them. The earlier the better.
Now, if you could make a drug regimen that would delay puberty until the child was more mature, better able to make sound, reasoned decisions about their sexuality, then you could make both sides of the argument happy. Just delay childhood until they are ready to be responsible for their own bodies for the rest of their lives.
That warm feeling you are experiencing is the side effect of 3 billion fathers of young girls smiling while dreaming of this very possibility.
That warm feeling you are experiencing is the side effect of 3 billion fathers of young girls smiling while dreaming of this very possibility.
Which is why people should be less concerned about the kids making the decision, and more concerned about parental involvement.
I'm somehow wondering how you ever become mature enough to make the decision if you delay childhood.
a drug regimen that would delay puberty until the child was more mature
Wouldn't that also delay maturity?
Physically and anatomically, yes.
Psychiatrically, since a vital component of psychiatric maturity is dependent on physical and anatomically development, that's not quite as clear, since the sufferer's of various endocrinological disorders and genetic syndromes WRT aging and physical maturity have shown both people can mentally and emotionally develop in an expected curve congruent to established norms, but others are stunted mentally and emotionally as well.
How much one's emotional, intellectual, and mental growth is affected by physical and anatomical development is largely predictably, but not set in stone either.
Presumably the changes occurring during puberty contribute to this maturation process.
I don't know much about it, but I would think that the onset of puberty and the rush of hormones could at least potentially change one's sense of gender. Making a permanent decision before that seems unwise to me.
It's just quackery, this will go down with exercising the demons and removing the humors.
^ this shit is cray cray, yo
Seriously, what ethical mental health professional encourages this kind of thing?
Russian detectives have arrived in Turkey to assist in the investigation into yesterday's assassination of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov.
It was on video, so...
I think they're all circling around the idea that it was the CIA or Donald Trump behind it all.
or perhaps reverse vampires.
Yes, this might be the political assassination filmed in the highest resolution, from the most angles in history.
I'll adjust my tinfoil hat here and say that shooter looks like he was a cutout.
I'm sure Turkey will cooperate fully in getting to the bottom of this.
Working-Class Parents' Investment in "Self-Reliance" Is Working Against Their Best Interests
Damn fool white working class mid-Westerners just "long for a future where they [can] consider themselves self-reliant and economically independent." This is clearly a problem! How to get around that and let these people accept the loving caress of the state? Maybe "frame government-supplied child care not as a benefit for the poor or unnecessary government intervention and toward presenting it as a culturally acceptable, universal right."
Because it's clearly in your best interests to rely on handouts.
"loving caress of the state"
Death metal power ballad?
Closest I've got off the top of my head is "The Demon's Name is Surveillance"
Glen Danzig's attorneys will be in contact with you, if they haven't already subpoenaed you already.
Sounds more like a two-minute postpunk b-side.
First song on Damn Fool White Working Class Parents' second album.
Again and again, they expressed reluctance to appear "greedy" and longed for a future where they could consider themselves self-reliant and economically independent. "Just let us run our own lives with less taxes," one said about public assistance. "And we don't want to live off the state, either," added a stay-at-home mom in response to a conversation on subsidized child care. "We want to do it honestly."
Clearly these people are fucked up and need to be taught the correct way.
Clearly these people are fucked up and need to be taught the correct way.
That's what government-run education is for.
"And we don't want to live off the state, either,"
Except for Medicare, Medicaid, SS, SSDI, the VA, and mid-western farm subsidies.
Pay your bet fuckstain.
Oh, was that in the article too or did you also interview them?
Quit taking the taxes, quit meddling in the healthcare industry, let workers invest privately rather than paying for your national ponzi scheme, and quit subsidizing big ag businesses.
Ok, so that leaves what, 80% of the non-elderly population? Most Midwesterners aren't farmers, veterans, or disabled.
What the Left doesn't understand (or, at least, pretends to not understand) is that even poor inner-city people want to be "self-reliant and economically independent." The Right should label self-reliance and economic independence as Universal Human Rights; maybe they'd get better traction.
But those are negative rights, not positive ones. Negative rights are sooo not hot right now.
LOL you libertardians and your rights.
I'm a stickler in that way.
I was attempting to explain the idea of "negative rights" to a friend a while ago and was quite ineffective. Do you (or anyone else here) have a recommendation?
Do you (or anyone else here) have a recommendation?
A short youtube video.
In a nutshell, positive rights involve making someone else do something. Negative rights do not. Positive rights are always, at their root, coercive.
"In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right...to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor"
/Sixth Amendment
Let's go ahead and clear this up.
Rights are viewed in two ways. One is legitimate, and the other is not. These two concepts of rights are known as "negative rights" and "positive rights."
Negative rights are those things that another may not do to you.
Positive rights are those things that another must do for you.
Positive "rights" are the moral equivalent of slavery as you are asserting that you have a claim on the effort of others, forcefully and without compensation or any kind of value exchange. Positive "rights" include "free" anything. Free healthcare, housing, sustenance, education, etc. These are not rights. If you receive these things for free, then someone else is paying for them. Someone else is supporting you. You are not an independent person. You are (ideally) answerable to those who support you. This amounts to charity when done privately and voluntarily. When accomplished through the state, this is theft under coercion and the threat of violence. It understandably upsets those who pay because they are working for far less than their labor is worth because they're supporting you. Meanwhile, they are able to provIide less support to the people they are truly and morally responsible for. Positive rights also include any action you expect others to take on your behalf, even ? and especially ? if it's against their will.
Only negative rights are legitimate. The only ethical fight is a defensive one. You have a right to defend your life. You have a right to refuse coercion. You have a right to reject and respond to aggression initiated against you. You have a right to protect your property and the fruits of your labor as the means by which you provide survival and comfort to yourself and your family, and as an extension of the very energy you expended to create value. You have a right to think, feel, and believe as you will. You are a sovereign being. THESE are rights.
Perspective example: you have a RIGHT to speak. You do NOT have a right to be heard, respected, agreed with, or even be given a platform
Positive rights are legitimate. When the obligation is freely assumed by the other party.
I got a rec or two for Charles, but I'm late as usual; if anyone reads this, check the PM linx!
That's not a right. That's an agreement.
The concept of positive rights is yet another bastardization of the meaning of words.
The correct term is "privileges". You have the "right" to do what thou wilt, as long as you do not interfere with others doing the same. You have a "privilege" to demand, backed by force, that others do as you demand.
Or, what RC Dean wrote.
There is a dignity of working that many people experience that may be more important to people who have few other ares in their life to gain dignity (or esteem) from. Its not just about having a roof and food, although those are absolutely the most important. Immediately next comes being given the recognition (in this case in the form of a paycheck) for having done something for somebody that they couldn't or didn't want to do themselves. Its very strange to me that the self-esteem wing of the political culture doesn't see this or chooses not to talk about it.
Its very strange to me that the self-esteem wing of the political culture doesn't see this or chooses not to talk about it.
Will others approve if put a video of me doing the hard work no one wants to do on Instagram?
Would you ask the ToughQuestions and post the responses on YouTube?
Judge their motives by the logical end to their means and it should no longer be strange to you.
"You didn't build that."
I'm not giving Slate the page views, but if to actively try and dissuade people from becoming self-reliant and to push them towards dependence is vile and destructive of the human spirit.
I decided to punish myself and read some of the comments...here are some real gems:
"Self reliance is a myth for the most part. Show me the best example of a self made man and I will show you numerous ways he was assisted by society"
"Self reliance is something that I value personally but don't impose on other people. I know that a lot of things are way easier for me and my family than for others, and I can't presume to know what it's like for them."
"Self reliance is great. But there will always be people who can't provide all they need. And their families will not be able to provide what they need. That is actually a key piece of capitalism: there are winners and losers. Then the winners contribute to take care of the losers. It is a social compact that makes capitalism function better. Lets people take more risks. Prevents the growth of a disaffected underclass. The idea that liberals are opposed to self reliance is absurd. That conservatives are so ardently opposed to any social safety net is fairly new. And dangerous."
Yep, this what they really believe...
Hmm...
They have a perverse view of "self reliance." They seem to mean anyone who isn't a hermit in a forest.
I recommend you declare a right to free food care and take his wallet and go eat.
Tupac Shakur, Pearl Jam, Journey, Joan Baez, and Yes are among the musical acts that will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
Which will coincide with the inauguration, so they'll have to perform for Trump if they want in!
Then I will particularly look forward to Tupac's performance.
The hof selections are terrible.
Tupac? That's not rock music, morans!
Journey? They were the punchline to a joke until the Sopranos finale. That one song merits induction to the hof?Joan Baez? She's a lady Bob Dylan, but worse.
Hologram. It's 2017.
"German police say they are unsure if a man they have in custody was behind Monday's lorry attack in Berlin."
Oops.
How difficult can it be to match up the fingerprints from the truck cabin to a person who is already present in one of the many databases they have of criminals and asylum seekers?
Deliberate obfuscation regarding immigrants and the Religion of Peace, is my guess.
"'The driver was wearing gloves' --- Yeah, *that's* the ticket!"
It is December in Germany. Not too unlikely.
If he's in custody they have access to his fingerprints. They can check those against the prints found in the truck. No match doesn't mean innocent, but a match is highly suggestive of involvement at some level. Also hairs, flakes of skin, etc.
"How difficult can it be to match up the fingerprints from the truck cabin"
Um. Very hard. Depending on how many people have touched the truck in recent history.
Clearly antisemitism.

Journey? And I guess I can give them Joan Baez, although I don't think anybody's listened to anything of hers in like 40 years.
Since when is Baez even vaguely rock and roll? Even in Cleveland?
She is technically folk, but so is Bob Dylan. Folk is much closer to rock than is rap. And she performed at Woodstock, something none of the other inductees did.
Bob at least played electric guitar. Joan, not so much.
Journey makes more sense than Tupac.
I don't if I can agree with you on that one. We'll just have to go our Separate Ways.

That's what she said.

Depends on whether you view the 70's thru a fresnel lens.
Somewhere on this thread the word "jerry" was used, as in "jerry can" etc. This spurred me to wikipedia, as I've always thought that "jury rigged" was wrong and the correct term was "jerry rigged" and had something to do with the English making do with what they had. Long story short, I was wrong.
However, I do still CRINGE when I hear someone say "chunk" instead of "chuck" when they mean throwing, and use "flush out" when they mean "flesh out" an idea.
My pet peeve is flaunt/flout.
I flaunt that convention.
The Troggs still aren't in the "some kinds of popular music" hall of fame.
So, the current talking point from progressive friends seems to be about how terrible the Senate is. Including a quote from Bill Maher about how if the "Dakota territories" have four Senators, and that how "if there are two Dakotas there should be like 15 Californias"
What is that I can't even
They sound like my daughter and her friends whenever they talk about stuff they don't like.
'Yeah, like so, why do we even need, like why Dakotas? And Montana has all that space, like why? Can't we, like, just make it one whatever, you know, like space and call it Love or something?'
Girl sitting next to me in 7th grade leaned over during a geography test and asked me, "Psst, which one is on top, North or South Dakota?". True story.
"South Dakota is North Dakota's bitch."
"And quit saying 'Pee-air"!"
Maybe South Dakota is a power bottom? Ever think of that?
What's the difference between a power bottom and a regular ole bottom?
Consent?

And you park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.

Oh, sorry. I wasn't clear. Still fucked her.
Was she wearing a V-neck sweater when she leaned over?
It's part of the axis of evil. Wyoming, Montana, and one of them Dakotas.
Of course a lot of the Californias outside of LA and SF would be Republican, but they don't think that deeply about it.
+1 Jefferson
"if there are two Dakotas there should be like 15 Californias"
I think the progs would be very surprised at the political make-up of 15 Californias. You'd pretty much have two liberal enclaves, a couple competitive states, and the rest pretty solidly conservative.
That was actually a thing on Progressive Talk Radio here a few weeks ago. The chimp host was ranting about too many rural states, and specifically demanded that North and South Dakota be merged. Another gem: "Wyoming? NOBODY lives in Wyoming! Why do they get three electoral college votes??? There were more people on the block I grew up on in New York than there are in Wyoming!! If they get three electoral college votes, my block ought to get three electoral college votes!!!" You could hear the spittle flecks hitting the mike.
It was awesome.
I don't they grasp that if a few urban areas got to decide the leadership of the country they would soon find the states would not play and those urban areas would be deciding the leadership of a much smaller country.
Those urban areas might find it hard to eat, without any food.
More electors defected from Hillary than Trump.
The drumbeat for Hamilton electors was more effective messaging within the drum circle party.
The ability of this election to provide amusement continues unabated.
tbf, had Clinton won we probably would've had more defecting Republican electors.
But yes, after all the talking about Hamilton electors the end result is hilarious.
"Dammit, when we told you to vote your conscience, we didn't mean that conscience! We meant your 'it's her turn' conscience!"

I'm gonna hack the internet.

100 percent of Americans "cannot be sure" if Russia hacked the 2016 election. Some are just more gullible than others.
What if I am 99.9% sure Russia had nothing to do with the DNC/Podesta hacks. Isn't that good enough?
I am 100% sure that, hacked by Russia or not, the DNC and Podesta emails are some pretty damning shit.
I'm surprised no one had mentioned that it doesn't matter for the most part how it got leaked. The stuff it said is still bad. I wish someone would hack the republicans so we can see what dumb shit they say. Although I don't personally feel that they are smart or savvy enough to have some broad sweeping conspiracy like the DNC.

THE AWARENESS
...When a guy who's based his existence on Blue Pill idealism has it destroyed after having had it shape who he is for so long, the anger he feels usually comes from not having become aware of it sooner. That anger is directed inward or at the social order that's held him in that idealistic delusion for so long. The frustration comes from wasting ones years invested in something that now seems so obviously false. That isn't to say that some men wont carry this resentment over into a fully realized misogyny, it's just to say that it begins from the regret of having lived what's now an obvious lie for so long.
A popular misconception about the Red Pill ? the popularized notion of it, not the actual praxeology ? is that it makes men misogynists or it's inherently negative, or it's function is 'truthful anger'. I am reminded of the explanation of the 32nd Law of Power:
The truth is often avoided because it is ugly and unpleasant. Never appeal to truth and reality unless you are prepared for the anger that comes from disenchantment.
That disenchantment is really what's at root here for those who would paint the Red Pill with the brush of anger, negativity or hate directed at women in general....
I have no idea what this is about.

Jesus. I actually thought this was some metaphor for why Bill Clinton is lashing out at Comey, et al, for his wife losing the election.

Poll: 46 percent of Americans "cannot be sure" if Russia hacked the 2016 election.
Oh look, Reason is adopting the leftist phrasing. How surprising.
Nobody at this point is seriously claiming the election itself was hacked. The left is using the usual motte and bailey tactics of pointing to plausible Russian hacking of DNC emails, and conflating that with "hacking the election". And Reason is apparently glad to help.
Yes, exposing the communications in a campaign = hacking an election. Of course it is.
The wording of the questions is a joke, also. It's one of those "here are two statements, which one do you agree with." It's a complete push poll.
And apparently that's Reason's fault.
It's Reason's fault that they reported it as though it has any meaning.
Is it also Reason's fault that they reported it as a demonstration of people answering stupid polls in stupid ways?
Odd, I didn't see Reason making that assertion, maybe I'm reading a different version than you.
Sparky is really good at defending arguments and statements that don't exist. So even when a Reason writer makes a bad argument, only Sparky knows what was REALLY said, he gets the context of the argument and must convey the true meaning to us proles. Leftists sure are smart.
Clearly disagreeing with you of all people makes me a leftist.
I'd like to submit to Citizen X that you might be the red amsoc.
Maybe you're right. I don't recall them ever bringing up a poll to show its stupidity. And we do have solid evidence that they're all cosmo SJWs. Especially that Root guy.

No, you need to hang out here all morning, then go to lunch, then take a nap, then happy hour somewhere. You can start tomorrow.
Add in a trip to the gym and maybe just get a little high...
Yes. Because if you get a LOT high, you'll start tearing up the tile and its all over then.
I wish it worked like that.
This actually happens to my wife, apparently. She talks about how she used to get high in college and clean all the things. Whereas, the only things I ever cleaned while high were the refrigerator, pantry, and occasionally the bowl.

Of course, no one thought about how it could be abused.
Hey, it's just an hour out of the 1500 hours of training they have to have.
Willing to bet we see legislation requiring stylists to undergo training for reporting abuse. And sex trafficing, because why not.
Brett L is a misogynist who doesn't want women to have degrees.
Actually, the female engineers I went to college with have a remarkably different set of politics running the gamut of completely apolitical to conservative. I'm in favor of them having degrees. I just wish they didn't get all the cool job offers.
You can't mansplain your way out of this.
To be fair, the stylist is not required to act, and is only empowered to share resources with the client. They don't report anything to the government.
What about buying them a Fozen costume?
"If you don't have sex with me I will find someone who will.", and "I'm not sure I can be with someone who doesn't want to have sex with me"
So now, the truth = coercion and emotional manipulation?
Also, I have to tell you, if coercion is equal to some heinous crime, we'll have to visit a prison to find a female over the age of 2.
They'll all be jailed for prostitution if they have sex on the same night as receiving a gift.

It's a really old timey tort principle as I recall, ironically one rooted in the idea that a wife has a duty to put out for her husband and vice versa.
I would put ot more that the person constantly refusing sex is not living up to the terms of the marriage contract.
If you consider that rape, why would you want to remain in a relationship with that person? That is only a threat if you do not consider them a horrible person for saying that in the first place.

"German police say they are unsure if a man they have in custody was behind Monday's lorry attack in Berlin."
Related to my post above, the standard should not be "absolute certainty". The standard should be "beyond a reasonable doubt" when he stands in front of a jury.
The standard for and indictment should be "probable cause".
Absolute certainty is unachievable in the real world because we're subject to perspective. Even "1 + 1 = 2" is suspect to some level of uncertainty in the real world--since numbers can be misread.

And the media wonders why it's held in such low regard.

Tupac is not stock and roll. Nor is Journey.
You should take that back about Journey.
In the beginning, when Steve Perry was more like a back up singer, Journey could rock it.
I mean, it was rock for your little sister, but if Elton John's "Saturday" wad rock and roll, so was "Feeling that Way".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0RFpXrPv2g
I mean, that's not my thing, but if they were rock and roll when they were Santana, they were rock and roll when they were Journey.
Remember, the alternative, for most people, at the time was disco or James Taylor.
Also, Tupac may not have been rock, but Afrika Bambaataa was.

I'm just sayin'.
That video just reaffirms my belief that the 70's were the ugliest decade.
The 70s were awesome.
I wasn't alive so I can't comment on the general awesomeness of that decade, but I can say that everyone's hair was gross looking.
I was alive in the 70's and I never understood why everyone's hair was so stiff and wiry and frizzy. Like, even blond white guys, who should have had soft flowing manes, had Brillo pad head.
Shampoo and showers were a less than regular thing.
They were old hippies from the '60s--except for Steve Perry.
Back before MTV, of course, it didn't matter how you looked so much. If anybody saw you it was from a distance in a stadium or on the album cover. If you were really pretty like Jim Morrison or Elvis, they'd put you on TV in a variety show or something. Maybe they'd put your band on TV at midnight on a Saturday.
The medium was radio and listening to albums at home. If you weren't on the radio, you didn't exist for most people.
Going to hardcore shows back them was truly exclusive. You'd never hear a lot of that music any other way. It wasn't meant for the radio. That any of it was ever recorded was amazing. And listening to a recording is still out of medium--like judging a restaurant by its decor rather than the food.
Someone never got exposed to The Old Grey Whistle Test.
I should point out that few bands could do harmonies like that live today.
That's not a studio recording.
When looks don't matter, you can use great musicians.
Live punk rock is awesome, but it isn't about being a virtuoso.
This is awesome, but you had to be there to experience it. You can't experience it on YouTube, or, rather, it's a different experience.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOCWma5vOiQ
With virtuoso musicians, watching film or listening to recording is the intended experience.
Journey has some decent rocking tunes. Stone in Love comes to mind. Feeling that Way is a good one also, as you mentioned.

What kind of idiot let's their wimin folk drive?
I think Bolan didn't drive at all.
"The other dude died by choking on a cocktail cherry whilst high."
That would be embarrassing even for a Cosmo. I bet that one day when we hear about the unfortunate passing of a Reason writer, that at least it will be from an olive pit or lime peel.
They don't put that kind of shit in appletinis, do they?
Why would Russia want Trump to win when clearly, Hillary would be much easier to push around?
^this^
If I were running Russia, I'd prefer Trump, because Hillary has kept doing stupid shit that all but required the Russians to go to war with the U.S.
Trump you can negotiate with. Hillary you cannot because she is too truculent to recognize that at some point, if you push hard enough, you get punched in the nose.
But, if they truly had the dirt on Hillary from her server's deleted emails, she would be very easy to blackmail.
I'm not so sure at this point. The hag basically acted like she was untouchable already, blatantly lying about matters she knew were false and would be discovered to be false, like almost all her initial statements about the email server.
If she were elected she would just see that as further confirmation that nothing will stick to her and tell anyone who tries to blackmail her to screw off. Maybe the Republicans would have tried to impeach her but I can see her being arrogant enough to think she could never be brought down by any leak.
The really valuable aspect of this is that nobody knows the what, who or how much dimensions of this debacle. We probably have multiple foreign powers and non-national interests with different sets of INT, with different objectives should they decide they want to use blackmail.
It's gonna be like an anti-prisoners dilemma, seeing which group can't resist making a blackmail threat, and in doing so, devaluing the data the other groups have.
Krugman melting down...again

This election truly is the gift that keeps on giving. So many bubbles popped, so many straws desperately grasped.
Delicious.
Hipster navel-gazing never goes out of style
In our smugness and self-assuredness, many of us laughed off Trump and his supporters throughout the campaign, refusing to take them seriously. We lampooned their mobilization of what we saw as a hopeless, hate-filled movement. But the fact that we have just elected an American Berlusconi has wiped the smirks off our faces. What will we do with our newfound sobriety? At the very least, we are called to approach our circumstances with a renewed ? and, I believe, ultimately beneficial ? seriousness.
There are at least two types of seriousness with which our current circumstances might be answered, two ways of facing the world without the slightest trace of sarcasm or playful duplicity. The first ? represented by our president-elect, who seems incapable of laughter, and some of his apologists ? is the bad kind, embodied by the thirst for profit or by apocalypse fetishism, joyless ideology, and even cruelty. It is a punitive seriousness, a burn-it-all-down ethics that favors revenge over reconciliation. This is the reigning type of seriousness.
Conservative "apocalypse fetishists" like Krugabe? or Tim Egan?
Ironic detachment is no longer an option. To the barricades, my hipster comrades!
embodied by the thirst for profit or by apocalypse fetishism, joyless ideology, and even cruelty
Yeah, he certainly seems to have sobered up and is now taking Trump seriously. Mook.
Nothing screams rock and roll louder than Joan Baez.
Hmm... prejudge much Reason.headlinewriters?
No link love for the Swiss cheese mosque rampage yesterday?
Just one more month. One month almost exactly to the hour now until Block Insane Yomomma and his vile wife can finally stop pretending that they sort of like America a little bit sometimes and permanently go back to Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright and "God damn America" and "F all you bitter clingers" and "my grandma was a typical white person" and all the shit that they really and truly believes in their heart of hearts.
It can't go by fast enough.
TW: Salon's Twitter Account
Apparently they think Trump is already President, or they really thing their readers are the dumbest people on earth.
That would make them half right.
They complained about a bunch of shit that happened during Obama's presidency that they never criticized, but now that Trump will inherit Obama's war making power, suddenly checks and balances are the order of the day.
The left really are a bunch of disingenuous cunts.
The comments are, surprisingly, almost 100% critical of the article.
Have they even bothered to respond to this shit? Like "Yep, we're fucking stupid and we don't know who the POTUS is. Sorry bout dat."
Speaking of the mofo, he's making one pathetic, last ditch effort to try to completely kill off the coal industry. Good riddance.
I see that one of the cable networks (A&E maybe) has a new series starting in January on the KKK because "this generation is the last generation that will be taught to hate."
So, we're going to focus on a movement that seems to have almost disappeared from general view, argue that they represent much of America and THEN give these idiots air time so they spew their idiocy all over the place.
Morons (and that applies to both the KKK and the developers of this show).
Hmmm... so, I had an idea to fix the European thing while still appeasing progs; just re-organize and re-contextualize your immigration/asylum program to be a fight against patriarchy. Thus, don't discriminate on the basis of nationality or religion per se, but only on the basis of being a post-pubescent male from a patriarchal nation. Expel male immigrants and treat Europe as a giant women's shelter. Women would gain more political power, so it's a win for them, which also means it is likely a win for progs, so they will be tempted go along on that basis alone.
treat Europe as a giant women's shelter
It's all pussies and douches anyway.
What are you talking about? You think the progs are being earnest when they say they want to help immigrants and women?
No, but I think they know that women vote for them, I was hoping their love of power would be enough to shut down male immigration.
Pearl Jam sucks big ol donkey dicks!
No, see below. Multiple hit records and a long career don't mean shit to the HoF.
The Mike Gartner of bands get in now, Tundra.
Another true story. My two friends and I got mugged at gun point in a park around 11pm one night. Junkies. When we got back to the car, "Alive" was playing on the radio. Even with that timing, the song stilled sucked.
Does Lou Reed know about this?
Not that I heard.
As far as I know, he and Lou Reed are just fine.
He had a "stroke"?
Getting a jumpstart on a lifetime of pain sounds like a pretty bad plan to me.
So... these individuals should not interact with H&R commentators at such an early age?
I'm thinking a trip to Cuba to work out a deal for a nice used Chevy might be in order.
Seriously. I'll buy a used car before a new one if that lunacy happens.
Take control of my car? Are they out of their fucken minds?
Exactly, I remember how this ended for all of those new fangled Battlestars (save the one captained by Xena).
I'm sure the internet would soon be flooded with how-to videos showing how to disable the system.
Make it red with white interior and I'm all over it!
Aw yeah, that's the business!
In former Soviet Russia, self-driving LADA hacks YOU!
I read about this when it was published. It didn't prove much beyond that in a laboratory, under ideal circumstances, you can penetrate a vehicle's OS. IIRC, the actual hack that was conducted was done by the manufacture as part of a vulnerability assessment. I think most of the auto manufacturers are pretty aware of the "internet of things" phenomenon and are taking system security seriously now,
Cytoxic hardest hit
at such an early any age.
An argument could be made that most people should not interact with H&R commentators at any age.
like This?
or do you prefer something sexier?
Best Eddie Vedder impression ever.
Dammit I look away for 15 minutes :-p
Xena didnt captain a Battlestar, Ro Laren did. Xena was a toaster.
Eddie should meet these guys.
Solita captained the Pegasus!
