"Jerry", derived from "jerrycans" (an improvised gasoline bomb made from a fuel container) is really common one. "Kraut" is used, and some old timeys use, "Heinie" as a pejorative, there are others that are regional and Cockney slang as well, but I don't know of them.

Either way is correct, since I specified, "fuel container", and during WWII, on the Allies side in Britain, was to which they were referred. The term, "Jerryrig," comes from the process of making an improvised bomb from the fuel containers, since the Army Engineers didn't have much else to fight with, as it was explained to me.

There is no way I would trust his intuition about something like wanting to change his gender. How do I know he wouldn't change his mind six months from now?

I don't think that's necessarily a fair conclusion in general (though it may be for those who do kill themselves or continue to have other serious mental health problems). It could be that some would have even worse problems without transitioning.

I tend to think that transgenderism is better considered a psychological problem than a physical/lifestyle one. But it's not impossible that transitioning to living as the other sex is the best way to deal with it for some people. There certainly seem to be some trans people who are happy enough with their post-transition lives.

I have some serious reservations about people who want to make a living, or at least make money, by facilitating and reinforcing the illnesses of others, but I can't say I would outlaw it, either.

I agree that trans people probably "know" fairly early on which sex they identify as (assuming it's one of the fairly traditional ones). You are right that having pre-teen children make these kinds of decisions is frightening.

I would hope that the parents have had lots of very long talks with the child and that they have together explored the various orientations and identifications together - not that this has to go beyond "so you're a boy in a girl's body and you want to marry a girl when you grow up," or whatevs.

All I can say is that this is not a decision most people take lightly. I knew from an early age that I was really, really attracted to other males and I struggled with that for years. And I'm cisnormative (a regular guy) so had a relatively easier time than the less conforming gays.

Being gay, as far as I can see, isn't a problem for the person who is gay (aside from the potential social disapproval which has become much less of a thing). "Out" gay people are generally happy enough with their gayness.
Transgender people, on the other hand, do have a problem. They aren't comfortable with who/what they are and would rather be something else. So it's not just another orientation, but a real problem that calls for some kind of solution.

I don't know if there is definitely a hard line to be drawn. And I'm no expert on the matter, so I may be mischaracterizing some people's experience. But that's how it looks to me.

The one friend I had who was transitioning M to F had a really horrible childhood and admitted to me that she thought her mother would have loved her more had she been born a girl. To be very clear, I don't know whether she was "typical" of the transgender set or not. But that, along with some pretty jagged mood swings led me to believe that she might not be happy or healthy whatever she does. Which, I guess makes me one of those who goes back and forth on whether gender reassignment surgery is ethical. I don't particularly care if a person wants to act/be the opposite gender from what they were born. And as long as it doesn't take me any more effort to treat that person the way they want to be treated, I will do so.

How much one's emotional, intellectual, and mental growth is affected by physical and anatomical development is largely predictably, but not set in stone either.

Negative rights are those things that another may not do to you.

Positive rights are those things that another must do for you.

Positive "rights" are the moral equivalent of slavery as you are asserting that you have a claim on the effort of others, forcefully and without compensation or any kind of value exchange. Positive "rights" include "free" anything. Free healthcare, housing, sustenance, education, etc. These are not rights. If you receive these things for free, then someone else is paying for them. Someone else is supporting you. You are not an independent person. You are (ideally) answerable to those who support you. This amounts to charity when done privately and voluntarily. When accomplished through the state, this is theft under coercion and the threat of violence. It understandably upsets those who pay because they are working for far less than their labor is worth because they're supporting you. Meanwhile, they are able to provIide less support to the people they are truly and morally responsible for. Positive rights also include any action you expect others to take on your behalf, even ? and especially ? if it's against their will.

Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission (NHTSC) formally proposed to mandate that all new cars be equipped with "vehicle-to-vehicle" (V2V) communications, also known as connected-vehicle technology. This would allow vehicles stuck in traffic to let other vehicles know to take alternate routes. It would also allow the governments?or hackers?to take control of your car anytime they want.

As I've previously noted, none of the at least 20 companies working on self-driving cars or software appear to be making V2V an integral part of their systems. This is mainly because they don't trust the government to install or maintain the infrastructure needed to make it work but also because self-driving cars don't need that technology.

While the risks of mandatory V2V systems are significant, the benefits are tiny. Marc Scribner of the Competitive Enterprise Institute notes that, "As NHTSA readily admits, hypothetical safety benefits of the mandate will be trivial for the next 15 years, at which point far superior automated vehicle technology may be deployed to consumers," especially if manufacturers aren't locked into technologies prescribed by the government.

Last year, the city of Flint, Michigan, burst into the world spotlight after its children were exposed to lead in drinking water and some were poisoned. In the year after Flint switched to corrosive river water that leached lead from old pipes, 5 percent of the children screened there had high blood lead levels.

In all, Reuters found nearly 3,000 areas with recently recorded lead poisoning rates at least double those in Flint during the peak of that city's contamination crisis. And more than 1,100 of these communities had a rate of elevated blood tests at least four times higher.
