Christmas is the time of miracles, so the real guy could end up being a neo-nazi in a MAGA hat.

The last I'd heard is that Berlin police had a Pakistani in custody.

      1. Just a thought not a sermon   8 years ago

Or, I guess I could've read the very next item....

        1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Yeah, I meant to quote both those links, but like a Kraut after a lorry driver, I FAILED.

          1. pan fried wylie   8 years ago

do the brits call them krauts, or don't they have a unique term for that too?

            1. Groovus Maximus   8 years ago

"Jerry", derived from "jerrycans" (an improvised gasoline bomb made from a fuel container) is really common one. "Kraut" is used, and some old timeys use, "Heinie" as a pejorative, there are others that are regional and Cockney slang as well, but I don't know of them.

              1. Zeb   8 years ago

I'm pretty sure you have the etymology the wrong way round. Jerrycans are just gasoline containers (not specifically as used for improvised bombs). But are named for the British epithet for Germans because they were invented by Germans.

                1. Groovus Maximus   8 years ago

I'm pretty sure you have the etymology the wrong way round.

'Twas explained that way to me by an authentic, honest to Sod, Limey, Zebulon. Either way is correct, since I specified, "fuel container", and during WWII, on the Allies side in Britain, was to which they were referred. The term, "Jerryrig," comes from the process of making an improvised bomb from the fuel containers, since the Army Engineers didn't have much else to fight with, as it was explained to me.

I'm not going to argue with a man whose father served in WWII and received that very explanation from him.

                  1. Number.6   8 years ago

Jerry Can has made it into the english-english lexicon, but I've only heard it in the south, but of course, there was plenty of exposure to american english for a couple of years, so it's hardly surprising.

The Brits have a term, "Jerry Built" which is almost certainly an evolution of "Jerry rig", which is used to describe some halfassed attempt at constructing a (usually mechanical) device or a building. As far as I know, nobody confused the 'jerry' in 'jerry rig' with the term for germans.

And then you have the "Jury rig", which some brits use interchangeably with "Jerry Rig", which might or might not be valid.

                    1. Col. Chestbridge   8 years ago

Jury-rig is the older version. I suspect "jerry-rig" would just be a pun.

                  2. Zeb   8 years ago

Well, according to everything I can find, "Jerry" came first and the can was named after that.

"Jury rigged" of which "jerryrigged" is avariation, is used much earlier than WWII. It may be that the change to "Jerry" had something to do with Germans, but improvising gasoline bombs wouldn't be the origin.

Having a parent who fought in a war does not make one an expert on the origin of words.

                    1. Tom Bombadil   8 years ago

                      Is this the 'nigger-rigged' thread?

                    2. Unreconstructed (Sans Flag)   8 years ago

                      Ahem, that's "Afro-engineered" these days!

                    3. Lord_at_War   8 years ago

+1 And, it was even used as a compliment sometimes... As a innovative "hack" used by a poor black guy just trying to get something done on the cheap.

                    4. Groovus Maximus   8 years ago

                      1) "Jerry" came first and the can was named after that.

                      Fine, then.

                      2) "Jury rigged" I never once used this term. The avariation is the one which I specifically referenced. The making of improv bombs from Jerrycans was called, and please note the explicit spelling: "j-e-r-r-y-r-i-g". Does that look like "Jury rigged", which is a nautical term, not a British Army Engineer term for a field improvised device that goes boom?

                      3) Having a parent who fought in a war does not make one an expert on the origin of words.

Considering that it the precise war in which the term, again since you seem to be exceptionally obtuse about this, was WWII, and in which the man served, AS AN ARMY ENGINEER MAKING BRIDGES, can qualify him as an expert explaining an Ur Exemplar from first hand experience.

                    5. Number.6   8 years ago

The brits have a long history of 'legitimization' of malapropisms.

What with the regional accents and borrowing (indeed, the widespread use of cockney throughout the UK without the speakers actually understanding the origin of the term they use) - makes it a fertile ground for urban philologists. The widespread televised use of the term 'berk' is a good example.

Then you have the misappropriation of continental European languages, particularly Dutch. Few british users of the word 'poppycock' know where it's derived from.

                    6. Groovus Maximus   8 years ago

The widespread televised use of the term 'berk'

I remember the last time I used that term, hurled forth in its proper context, and nearly got a punch in the face for my trouble. One of my few Ugly American moments.-)

As I recall, it came about because in the North Africa campaigns the British soldiers scrounged the battlefields for German gas cans because their own were notoriously leaky. "Jerrcan"was a way to distinguish the good stuff iover their crappy equipment.

              2. creech   8 years ago

I thought Jerry derived from Germans (like Jap was a shortened version of Japanese). Old nicknames were pretty cool - Frogs, Roast Beefs, Cousin Jonathan, Limeys, etc.

            2. Number.6   8 years ago

A generational thing, but about 60 years ago they might have been called "the bosche" by some limeys, although now, the term is limited to talking about expensive kitchen appliances and hand tools.

    269) In the LGBT school choice post earlier, Scott Shackford wrote "transgender people are coming out at a younger age." And this transgender woman makes a good point that those who transition before puberty "drastically reduce later symptoms of dysphoria" because at puberty "bodies experience irreversible changes." That makes sense. If you transition before puberty, it must be far easier to make the change?fewer surgeries, better outcomes. (And less expense!)

But, but, but?that means making the decision when you're 10, 11, 12 years old. My son is 11. His thinking is short-term and materialistic. He has no social judgment, no sense of enlightened well-being. And while he may be a little immature compared to his peers, he's in no way atypical. There is no way I would trust his intuition about something like wanting to change his gender. How do I know he wouldn't change his mind six months from now?

Are there any kids that age who are mature enough to make the decision? Maybe they're homosexual and misinterpreting what their emerging romantic feelings mean? Maybe they simply don't fit into normal gender stereotypes (i.e, tomboys or effeminate boys) and are confused about what that means? This is difficult even for adults?how could a prepubescent's judgment be sound?

I have no information on the breakdown between those that change their gender pre or post pubesence, however, Transvestites kill themselves at a much higher rate than most of the population. This would lead me to believe that changing gender solved nothing for them.

        2. Zeb   8 years ago

This would lead me to believe that changing gender solved nothing for them.

I don't think that's necessarily a fair conclusion in general (though it may be for those who do kill themselves or continue to have other serious mental health problems). It could be that some would have even worse problems without transitioning.

I tend to think that transgenderism is better considered a psychological problem than a physical/lifestyle one. But it's not impossible that transitioning to living as the other sex is the best way to deal with it for some people. There certainly seem to be some trans people who are happy enough with their post-transition lives.

          1. Lachowsky   8 years ago

True that it might not be fair in general. I have a very hard time believing that changing one's gender is a generally healthy practice though. I think that it would exacerbate an underlying problem more often than alleviate one.

If you can't accept the body you are given, then I think that says something about you and your ability to deal with life. I was born in a family of 6 ft 4 athletes. I'm 5 11 and not very athletic. I didn't get on a hormone and steroid regime in high school to try and defy the genetic hand I was dealt. I just dealt with the hand and am A-okay.

            1. Zeb   8 years ago

If you can't accept the body you are given, then I think that says something about you and your ability to deal with life.

I think that's true too. But then what?

All I'm saying is that it's possible that transitioning is the best available way for some people to get better at dealing with life.

              1. Lachowsky   8 years ago

All I'm saying is that it's possible that transitioning is the best available way for some people to get better at dealing with life.

Maybe that's true. Or perhaps not.Maybe not transitioning and learning to live with yourself as you are is the best course. I honestly don't know. I do know that if you are born short, you have to live with it. If you are born black, you have to live with it. If you are born stupid, you have to live with it. The vast majority of people learn to cope with the hand they are dealt without disfiguring their bodies.

In short, grow up and deal with it. It's what most people do.

                1. Zeb   8 years ago

But unlike the other things you list, gender dysphoria is a serious psychological issue for some people. Which, by definition, is something that is difficult to simply learn to live with.

Transgender people are a tiny minority, so it may not be reasonable to judge them based on what most people are able to do.

I really don't know either. This is just how I think of it based on my limited knowledge and experience with such things. So it's a good thing I don't have to decide.

            2. Deep Lurker   8 years ago

"If you can't accept the body your are given" makes me think of that poor guy who got gender-reassigned as an infant because of a doctor's screw-up. It turned out... poorly.

But he was given a girl's body as an infant, and had all the help he could want for accepting that body - and it was, in this case, plainly not his fault that he couldn't.

So if someone is handed that sort of body/brain mismatch as the result of a congenital or genetic defect, rather than a medical error, I'm also going to be slow to blame him. I'm going to be slow to conclude that it says something about him and his ability to deal with life.

              1. Lachowsky   8 years ago

I don't really have good response to that. Maybe sometimes we are just born fucked up.

That's the best I can come up with.

          2. R C Dean   8 years ago

I tend to think that transgenderism is better considered a psychological problem

Ya think? There is a physical reality, a fact: you are a male. There is a subjective denial of this fact: I feel like a female. Textbook psychological problem, probably categorized as a delusion, and one that is profound enough to spawn all kinds of other psychological dysfunctions.

            1. Free Society   8 years ago

No it's a choice! Wait no, it's not a choice! Wait, which one of those options offers maximum empowerment? Empowerment is all that matters! Vote left, be a mascot of oppression and cut your dick off. Because it's a choice, or it's not, or something.

            2. Zeb   8 years ago

That's all true (though I'm not convinced that "delusion" is quite the right word for it).

But the question remains, what should you do about it? As far as I can see, it's not clear that transitioning isn't the best available way to treat the issue for at least some people. If there were good evidence that some kind of therapy or drugs would work better (however you might judge that), then I'd say that was the way to go (though consenting adults should be allowed to modify their bodies however they want). But I don't see much there.

              1. Col. Chestbridge   8 years ago

I think for now our best option is really just to admit that we don't know, and hope that research into and studies of the various ways people currently try to deal with it will help future generations.

It's unfortunate therefore that some people consider it heresy to even admit that we don't know whether gender reassignment is beneficial or not.

              2. R C Dean   8 years ago

But the question remains, what should you do about it?

True enough. Forcing other people, by law, to indulge your mental illness shouldn't be an option, but its currently being jammed down by numerous agencies, etc.

Typically, we don't treat mental illness by facilitating and reinforcing it, though. Not sure why this should be an exception. Now, if someone wants to live out their mental illness without impinging on the rights of others, I say why not. I have some serious reservations about people who want to make a living, or at least make money, by facilitating and reinforcing the illnesses of others, but I can't say I would outlaw it, either.

              3. Enough About Palin   8 years ago

I would say delusion is the correct word. There are people who believe they should have been born without legs and in order to feel good about themselves, have their legs amputated. True story. Transgender reassignment surgery is no different.

        3. DenverJ   8 years ago

Almost like the transgender thing is a sign of mental illness...

          1. Groovus Maximus   8 years ago

It is. At the very least, a bona fide dissociative disorder expressed as a delusion of granduer.

Dr. ZG is of the firm medical opinion that it's a discrete form of schizophrenia, and the person simply has no grasp of demonstrable, provable, falsifiable reality.

    3. Tonio   8 years ago

Is this theoretical or practical? Assuming theoretical.

I agree that trans people probably "know" fairly early on which sex they identify as (assuming it's one of the fairly traditional ones). You are right that having pre-teen children make these kinds of decisions is frightening.

I would hope that the parents have had lots of very long talks with the child and that they have together explored the various orientations and identifications together - not that this has to go beyond "so you're a boy in a girl's body and you want to marry a girl when you grow up," or whatevs.

All I can say is that this is not a decision most people take lightly. I knew from an early age that I was really, really attracted to other males and I struggled with that for years. And I'm cisnormative (a regular guy) so had a relatively easier time than the less conforming gays.

      1. pan fried wylie   8 years ago

very long talks. like 8-12yr long talks.

      2. Lee Genes   8 years ago

I would argue sexual attraction and gender dysmorphism are separate things. It's like comparing a person who prefers cake to an anorexic.

        1. Zeb   8 years ago

That's how I'm inclined to think of it as well.

Being gay, as far as I can see, isn't a problem for the person who is gay (aside from the potential social disapproval which has become much less of a thing). "Out" gay people are generally happy enough with their gayness.
Transgender people, on the other hand, do have a problem. They aren't comfortable with who/what they are and would rather be something else. So it's not just another orientation, but a real problem that calls for some kind of solution.

I don't know if there is definitely a hard line to be drawn. And I'm no expert on the matter, so I may be mischaracterizing some people's experience. But that's how it looks to me.

    4. Brett L   8 years ago

It really comes down to what your own stance on sanity and its relation to reality is. As far as I am aware, transgenderism is (now) the only form of body dysmorphism the psychological community treats by encouraging the person to explore it. I don't know whether that's good or bad for the health of the patient. The one friend I had who was transitioning M to F had a really horrible childhood and admitted to me that she thought her mother would have loved her more had she been born a girl. To be very clear, I don't know whether she was "typical" of the transgender set or not. But that, along with some pretty jagged mood swings led me to believe that she might not be happy or healthy whatever she does. Which, I guess makes me one of those who goes back and forth on whether gender reassignment surgery is ethical. I don't particularly care if a person wants to act/be the opposite gender from what they were born. And as long as it doesn't take me any more effort to treat that person the way they want to be treated, I will do so.

But, but, but?that means making the decision when you're 10, 11, 12 years old.

This is why parents must make the decision for them. The earlier the better.

    7. Griffin3   8 years ago

Now, if you could make a drug regimen that would delay puberty until the child was more mature, better able to make sound, reasoned decisions about their sexuality, then you could make both sides of the argument happy. Just delay childhood until they are ready to be responsible for their own bodies for the rest of their lives.

That warm feeling you are experiencing is the side effect of 3 billion fathers of young girls smiling while dreaming of this very possibility.

      1. Hail Rataxes   8 years ago

That warm feeling you are experiencing is the side effect of 3 billion fathers of young girls smiling while dreaming of this very possibility.

a drug regimen that would delay puberty until the child was more mature

        Wouldn't that also delay maturity?

        1. Groovus Maximus   8 years ago

          Physically and anatomically, yes.

Psychiatrically, since a vital component of psychiatric maturity is dependent on physical and anatomically development, that's not quite as clear, since the sufferer's of various endocrinological disorders and genetic syndromes WRT aging and physical maturity have shown both people can mentally and emotionally develop in an expected curve congruent to established norms, but others are stunted mentally and emotionally as well.

How much one's emotional, intellectual, and mental growth is affected by physical and anatomical development is largely predictably, but not set in stone either.

      4. ant1sthenes   8 years ago

Presumably the changes occurring during puberty contribute to this maturation process.

    8. LynchPin1477   8 years ago

I don't know much about it, but I would think that the onset of puberty and the rush of hormones could at least potentially change one's sense of gender. Making a permanent decision before that seems unwise to me.

Working-Class Parents' Investment in "Self-Reliance" Is Working Against Their Best Interests

Damn fool white working class mid-Westerners just "long for a future where they [can] consider themselves self-reliant and economically independent." This is clearly a problem! 2. Citizen X   8 years ago

In a nutshell, positive rights involve making someone else do something. Negative rights do not. Positive rights are always, at their root, coercive.

"In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right...to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor"

                /Sixth Amendment

            3. Lachowsky   8 years ago

Let's go ahead and clear this up.

Rights are viewed in two ways. One is legitimate, and the other is not. These two concepts of rights are known as "negative rights" and "positive rights."

Negative rights are those things that another may not do to you.

Positive rights are those things that another must do for you.

Positive "rights" are the moral equivalent of slavery as you are asserting that you have a claim on the effort of others, forcefully and without compensation or any kind of value exchange. Positive "rights" include "free" anything. Free healthcare, housing, sustenance, education, etc. These are not rights. If you receive these things for free, then someone else is paying for them. Someone else is supporting you. You are not an independent person. You are (ideally) answerable to those who support you. This amounts to charity when done privately and voluntarily. When accomplished through the state, this is theft under coercion and the threat of violence. It understandably upsets those who pay because they are working for far less than their labor is worth because they're supporting you. Meanwhile, they are able to provIide less support to the people they are truly and morally responsible for. Positive rights also include any action you expect others to take on your behalf, even ? and especially ? if it's against their will.

              1. Lachowsky   8 years ago

Only negative rights are legitimate. The only ethical fight is a defensive one. You have a right to defend your life. You have a right to refuse coercion. You have a right to reject and respond to aggression initiated against you. You have a right to protect your property and the fruits of your labor as the means by which you provide survival and comfort to yourself and your family, and as an extension of the very energy you expended to create value. You have a right to think, feel, and believe as you will. You are a sovereign being. THESE are rights.

                1. Lachowsky   8 years ago

Perspective example: you have a RIGHT to speak. You do NOT have a right to be heard, respected, agreed with, or even be given a platform

                2. You ARE a Prog (MJG)   8 years ago

Positive rights are legitimate. When the obligation is freely assumed by the other party.

I got a rec or two for Charles, but I'm late as usual; if anyone reads this, check the PM linx!

                  1. Bubba Jones   8 years ago

                    That's not a right. That's an agreement.

            4. R C Dean   8 years ago

The concept of positive rights is yet another bastardization of the meaning of words.

The correct term is "privileges". You have the "right" to do what thou wilt, as long as you do not interfere with others doing the same. You have a "privilege" to demand, backed by force, that others do as you demand.

              1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

                Or, what RC Dean wrote.

        2. Brett L   8 years ago

There is a dignity of working that many people experience that may be more important to people who have few other ares in their life to gain dignity (or esteem) from. Its not just about having a roof and food, although those are absolutely the most important. Immediately next comes being given the recognition (in this case in the form of a paycheck) for having done something for somebody that they couldn't or didn't want to do themselves. Its very strange to me that the self-esteem wing of the political culture doesn't see this or chooses not to talk about it.

    6. Steevie   8 years ago

I decided to punish myself and read some of the comments...here are some real gems:

"Self reliance is a myth for the most part. Show me the best example of a self made man and I will show you numerous ways he was assisted by society"

"Self reliance is something that I value personally but don't impose on other people. I know that a lot of things are way easier for me and my family than for others, and I can't presume to know what it's like for them."

"Self reliance is great. But there will always be people who can't provide all they need. And their families will not be able to provide what they need. That is actually a key piece of capitalism: there are winners and losers. Then the winners contribute to take care of the losers. It is a social compact that makes capitalism function better. Lets people take more risks. Prevents the growth of a disaffected underclass. The idea that liberals are opposed to self reliance is absurd. That conservatives are so ardently opposed to any social safety net is fairly new. And dangerous."

Yep, this what they really believe...

    THE AWARENESS
...When a guy who's based his existence on Blue Pill idealism has it destroyed after having had it shape who he is for so long, the anger he feels usually comes from not having become aware of it sooner. That anger is directed inward or at the social order that's held him in that idealistic delusion for so long. The frustration comes from wasting ones years invested in something that now seems so obviously false. That isn't to say that some men wont carry this resentment over into a fully realized misogyny, it's just to say that it begins from the regret of having lived what's now an obvious lie for so long.

A popular misconception about the Red Pill ? the popularized notion of it, not the actual praxeology ? is that it makes men misogynists or it's inherently negative, or it's function is 'truthful anger'. I am reminded of the explanation of the 32nd Law of Power:

The truth is often avoided because it is ugly and unpleasant. Never appeal to truth and reality unless you are prepared for the anger that comes from disenchantment.

That disenchantment is really what's at root here for those who would paint the Red Pill with the brush of anger, negativity or hate directed at women in general....

The Federal government -- still retarded

Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission (NHTSC) formally proposed to mandate that all new cars be equipped with "vehicle-to-vehicle" (V2V) communications, also known as connected-vehicle technology. This would allow vehicles stuck in traffic to let other vehicles know to take alternate routes. It would also allow the governments?or hackers?to take control of your car anytime they want.

As I've previously noted, none of the at least 20 companies working on self-driving cars or software appear to be making V2V an integral part of their systems. This is mainly because they don't trust the government to install or maintain the infrastructure needed to make it work but also because self-driving cars don't need that technology.

While the risks of mandatory V2V systems are significant, the benefits are tiny. Marc Scribner of the Competitive Enterprise Institute notes that, "As NHTSA readily admits, hypothetical safety benefits of the mandate will be trivial for the next 15 years, at which point far superior automated vehicle technology may be deployed to consumers," especially if manufacturers aren't locked into technologies prescribed by the government.

      Oh fuck you squirrels:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'demonetisation' strategy to remove the high-value INR500 and INR1000 ([less than] $15) notes from circulation has resulted in a sales drop [of mobile devices] of 50%, prompting several Indian manufacturers ? along with Taiwan's Foxconn ? to wind down operations across their sites, leaving workers idle.

Indian manufacturers including Intex, Karbonn, Lava and Micromax are planning to cut between 10% and 40% of their work forces following the demonetisation initiative. Lava has shut down a plant which provides jobs to 5000 workers for at least a week, while Micromax has also reduced production at sites in Rudrapur and Telangana.

Getting sex by saying 'If you don't have sex with me I will find someone who will' = rape or sexual assault?

From the Clark University Dean of Students office [since removed]:

    [...]

Coercion is the use of emotional manipulation to persuade someone to something they may not want to do ? like being sexual or performing certain sexual acts. Examples of some coercive statements include: "If you love me you would have sex with me .", "If you don't have sex with me I will find someone who will.", and "I'm not sure I can be with someone who doesn't want to have sex with me." Coercive statements are often part of many campus acquaintance rapes. Being coerced into having sex or performing sexual acts is not consenting to having sex and is considered rape/sexual assault.

Russian detectives have arrived in Turkey to assist in the investigation into yesterday's assassination of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov.

    As part of Alpha Group?

"In one retelling," Levitt writes, "the KGB kidnapped a relative of the hostage-taking organization's chief, cut off the relative's ear, and sent it to his family. In another, the Alpha unit abducted one of the kidnapper's brothers, and sent two of his fingers home to his family in separate envelopes.

"Still another version has the Soviet operatives kidnapping a dozen Shi'a, one of whom was the relative of a Hezbollah leader. The relative was castrated and shot in the head, his testicles stuffed in his mouth, and his body shipped to Hezbollah with a letter promising a similar fate for the 11 other Shi'a captives if the three Soviet hostages were not released."

Russia has a longstanding policy of targeting family members of terrorists. The reports of Alpha Group's alleged actions in Beirut are consistent with this tradition.

Uber driver in Michigan stabs passenger five times, says he 'disrepected' the car

When Allemon arrived, the male passenger ? a 49-year-old from Beverly Hills ? tapped on the car window to let the driver know he was getting in.

Allemon felt the passenger "disrespected" his vehicle with the window tap, police said.

After driving the couple for only about one mile, he ordered the man out of his car. The passenger asked if they could at least wait for another Uber to arrive, since there was a snowstorm.

A brawl ensued, and Allemon stabbed the man five times before the victim disarmed him, police said.

While the total numbers need improvement, [chief diversity and inclusion officer] Houston said new hires of women and racial minorities has increased. Of the new employees, 6.6 percent were African American/Black and 7 percent were Hispanic/Latino.

Black Goat Is Sacrificed On Tarmac Of Pakistani Airport

PIA is Pakistan International Airlines, which had grounded its fleet of ATR turboprop passenger planes after a Dec. 7 crash of an ATR killed all 47 people on board. The flight on Sunday was the first by an ATR since then.

It wasn't PIA's idea to bring a goat into the mix. Airline spokesperson Danyal Gillani issued what was no doubt the first airline statement about goat sacrifice in the history of aviation: "It was done by some local employees as a gesture of gratitude over the clearance of the first ATR [for flying]." Animal sacrifice is a part of Islamic tradition and can be found in other religions as well (see Leviticus 23:19).

In defense of the sacrifice, a Twitter user who goes by MisBis wrote: "There's nothing wrong in giving Sadqua [a charitable offering] ... Sadqa bari balao se bachata hai [it hedges against many troubles] ... stop making it a joke."

But the Pakistan International Airlines Pilots Association was not happy. "When you slaughter an animal in the middle of a major airport next to an aircraft, it is bound to attract attention," said a representative.

Florida police arrest man after he tried to break into a home wearing nothing but pants on his arms

Sheriff's deputies said the suspect broke a screen door, entered a front porch and tried to get into the home.

Related to my post above, the standard should not be "absolute certainty". The standard should be "beyond a reasonable doubt" when he stands in front of a jury.

The standard for and indictment should be "probable cause".

Absolute certainty is unachievable in the real world because we're subject to perspective. Even "1 + 1 = 2" is suspect to some level of uncertainty in the real world--since numbers can be misread.

They're not certain yet because the guy is a Pakistani refugee. If he were a right wing extremist, which in Germany now means anyone right of Mao or Lenin, same as in the USA, then the identity would be known with 100% certainty.

Why are the media still referring to the Nazis, National Socialist German Workers' Party (gee, that sounds an awful lot like a lot of left wing political parties today) as right wing? I guess it's the same thing as how they call leftists, liberals.

      1. Ken Shultz   8 years ago

And the media wonders why it's held in such low regard.

"Americans' trust and confidence in the mass media "to report the news fully, accurately and fairly" has dropped to its lowest level in Gallup polling history, with 32% saying they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media. This is down eight percentage points from last year."

        ----Gallup

        http://www.gallup.com/poll/195.....w-low.aspx

I don't think they've changed much, I just think the media model has changed with the introduction of the internet. When people only had four news sources, some of which shared resources among them, what the media said was the truth as far as most anyone knew.

        1. Hyperion   8 years ago

Changed? The NYT made a statement right after the election about how they're going to be more balanced now. Krugman just wrote an article comparing today to 1930s Germany and Trump to Hitler. Yeah, they're more balanced alright. Unhinged is more like it.

Geert Wilders Shocking Tweet To Merkel: Your Hands Are Covered With Blood

The thousands of U.S. locales where lead poisoning is worse than in Flint

Last year, the city of Flint, Michigan, burst into the world spotlight after its children were exposed to lead in drinking water and some were poisoned. In the year after Flint switched to corrosive river water that leached lead from old pipes, 5 percent of the children screened there had high blood lead levels.

Flint is no aberration. In fact, it doesn't even rank among the most dangerous lead hotspots in America.

In all, Reuters found nearly 3,000 areas with recently recorded lead poisoning rates at least double those in Flint during the peak of that city's contamination crisis. And more than 1,100 of these communities had a rate of elevated blood tests at least four times higher.

The poisoned places on this map stretch from Warren, Pennsylvania, a town on the Allegheny River where 36 percent of children tested had high lead levels, to a zip code on Goat Island, Texas, where a quarter of tests showed poisoning.

    Rick Snyder has been busy.

They were old hippies from the '60s--except for Steve Perry.

Back before MTV, of course, it didn't matter how you looked so much. If anybody saw you it was from a distance in a stadium or on the album cover. If you were really pretty like Jim Morrison or Elvis, they'd put you on TV in a variety show or something. Maybe they'd put your band on TV at midnight on a Saturday.

The medium was radio and listening to albums at home. If you weren't on the radio, you didn't exist for most people.

Going to hardcore shows back them was truly exclusive. You'd never hear a lot of that music any other way. It wasn't meant for the radio. That any of it was ever recorded was amazing. And listening to a recording is still out of medium--like judging a restaurant by its decor rather than the food.

With virtuoso musicians, watching film or listening to recording is the intended experience.

Journey has some decent rocking tunes. Stone in Love comes to mind. Feeling that Way is a good one also, as you mentioned.

Examples of some coercive statements include: "If you love me you would have sex with me .", "If you don't have sex with me I will find someone who will.", and "I'm not sure I can be with someone who doesn't want to have sex with me."

What about, "If I wanted a friend, I'd buy a dog."?

That would be embarrassing even for a Cosmo. I bet that one day when we hear about the unfortunate passing of a Reason writer, that at least it will be from an olive pit or lime peel.

Why would Russia want Trump to win when clearly, Hillary would be much easier to push around?

    1. Hyperion   8 years ago

      ^this^

    2. tarran   8 years ago

If I were running Russia, I'd prefer Trump, because Hillary has kept doing stupid shit that all but required the Russians to go to war with the U.S.

Trump you can negotiate with. Hillary you cannot because she is too truculent to recognize that at some point, if you push hard enough, you get punched in the nose.

      1. I can't even   8 years ago

But, if they truly had the dirt on Hillary from her server's deleted emails, she would be very easy to blackmail.

        1. Volren   8 years ago

I'm not so sure at this point. The hag basically acted like she was untouchable already, blatantly lying about matters she knew were false and would be discovered to be false, like almost all her initial statements about the email server.

If she were elected she would just see that as further confirmation that nothing will stick to her and tell anyone who tries to blackmail her to screw off. Maybe the Republicans would have tried to impeach her but I can see her being arrogant enough to think she could never be brought down by any leak.

        2. Number.6   8 years ago

The really valuable aspect of this is that nobody knows the what, who or how much dimensions of this debacle. We probably have multiple foreign powers and non-national interests with different sets of INT, with different objectives should they decide they want to use blackmail.

It's gonna be like an anti-prisoners dilemma, seeing which group can't resist making a blackmail threat, and in doing so, devaluing the data the other groups have.

Hipster navel-gazing never goes out of style

In our smugness and self-assuredness, many of us laughed off Trump and his supporters throughout the campaign, refusing to take them seriously. We lampooned their mobilization of what we saw as a hopeless, hate-filled movement. But the fact that we have just elected an American Berlusconi has wiped the smirks off our faces. What will we do with our newfound sobriety? At the very least, we are called to approach our circumstances with a renewed ? and, I believe, ultimately beneficial ? seriousness.

There are at least two types of seriousness with which our current circumstances might be answered, two ways of facing the world without the slightest trace of sarcasm or playful duplicity. The first ? represented by our president-elect, who seems incapable of laughter, and some of his apologists ? is the bad kind, embodied by the thirst for profit or by apocalypse fetishism, joyless ideology, and even cruelty. It is a punitive seriousness, a burn-it-all-down ethics that favors revenge over reconciliation. This is the reigning type of seriousness.

Conservative "apocalypse fetishists" like Krugabe? or Tim Egan?

Ironic detachment is no longer an option. To the barricades, my hipster comrades!

    1. commodious buggres alle   8 years ago

Today, more than ever, the world needs our system of checks and balances to work again. The alternative, unthinkable as it might be, is looming.

They complained about a bunch of shit that happened during Obama's presidency that they never criticized, but now that Trump will inherit Obama's war making power, suddenly checks and balances are the order of the day.

The left really are a bunch of disingenuous cunts.

I see that one of the cable networks (A&E maybe) has a new series starting in January on the KKK because "this generation is the last generation that will be taught to hate."

So, we're going to focus on a movement that seems to have almost disappeared from general view, argue that they represent much of America and THEN give these idiots air time so they spew their idiocy all over the place.

Morons (and that applies to both the KKK and the developers of this show).

  61. ant1sthenes   8 years ago

Hmmm... so, I had an idea to fix the European thing while still appeasing progs; just re-organize and re-contextualize your immigration/asylum program to be a fight against patriarchy. Thus, don't discriminate on the basis of nationality or religion per se, but only on the basis of being a post-pubescent male from a patriarchal nation. Expel male immigrants and treat Europe as a giant women's shelter. Women would gain more political power, so it's a win for them, which also means it is likely a win for progs, so they will be tempted go along on that basis alone.

    1. commodious buggres alle   8 years ago

treat Europe as a giant women's shelter

It's all pussies and douches anyway.

    2. Suthenboy   8 years ago

What are you talking about? You think the progs are being earnest when they say they want to help immigrants and women?

      1. ant1sthenes   8 years ago

No, but I think they know that women vote for them, I was hoping their love of power would be enough to shut down male immigration.

Another true story. My two friends and I got mugged at gun point in a park around 11pm one night. Junkies. When we got back to the car, "Alive" was playing on the radio. Even with that timing, the song stilled sucked.

  77. OBJ FRANKELSON   8 years ago

I read about this when it was published. It didn't prove much beyond that in a laboratory, under ideal circumstances, you can penetrate a vehicle's OS. IIRC, the actual hack that was conducted was done by the manufacture as part of a vulnerability assessment. I think most of the auto manufacturers are pretty aware of the "internet of things" phenomenon and are taking system security seriously now,
