I love self-checkout lanes at my local grocery store. Three problems:

1. People use them that have no business using them, skill-wise.
2. Poorly calibrated scales that cause delays with item verification.
3. Dumb policy around rewards programs like collecting stamps or whatever, so that the checkout process will not give you your receipt until the monitor clears you.

2&3 are easy enough to fix... not sure what to do about 1 except have a warning go off after maybe 3 minutes.

A chain store near me took them out. I strongly suspect forgetful people, both customers and employees, were using them to their advantage. Another has erected an impulse-buy queuing barrier in front of them. It feels very... desperate.

Personally, IMO, seems that the stores other than grocery stores that I visit, who have always had human registers, are far better at making sure their employees perform as human registers. That grocery stores have always had the worst checkout people.

One thing I noticed is some chains use handicapped cashiers. There's always the woman with 1 lame hand, the guy with 2 fingers, the Down Syndrome kid, etc. All nice enough people, and although I like to pretend I'm helping them get work, the manager that puts all these people on Saturday morning duty needs to be replaced. I dunno, maybe customers get leery of buying produce stocked by handicapped people but it seems they would be better suited for some of the inventory jobs than the cashier jobs.

I don't think that people would mind being "detained" in a corral for 30 seconds to allow the scan to happen. The RFID scanners are good enough that 30s in a ~5 ft. proximity should be enough to get everything in the cart/on your person.

Express lanes where one line divides up into 4-5 registers is FAR SUPERIOR to self-checkout, which always takes longer than it should. That express lane line moves fast.

Problem is that the express lane has 4-5 cashiers in need of compensation and the self-checkout lanes have 1 or none. But the self-checkout lanes usually need shitloads of maintenance. They tend to be abused and go downhill fast. And they are more expensive than the cashiers they are replacing.

Where I am there is one queue for each four self-check stations. I also gauge the situation: out-of-service stations, old people, parent with restless young children, very full carts, bringing own bags, anything else likely to lead to a delay and I re-evaluate.

BTW, I unilaterally enforce single feeder queues.

2. The more you check out, the more likely it will get confused and you have to either start over or find a human.

3. I especially hate ten tuna cans, for instance, because you can't just wave one back and forth, you have to wave each, deposit each on the checkout scale, and s.l.o.w...d.o.w.n or it gets conused around can No. 4 and see No 2.

I use them when I only have a few simple things. I try them once every month or two for longer and/or more complicated stuff, but almost always get stymied half way through. I just scoop everything up, smack a few buttons to get some human's attention, and walk off to find a human cashier.

Learn where the "call attendant" touch button is on your self-check. Also, learn where the "lane open" toggle switch is on the light pole beside the lane. Grab onto that and start working it if the attendant isn't there.

Basically, that one time you cause trouble they start recognizing you and issue standing orders to "always ensure that Mr. Tonio has a smooth self-check experience." I always walk by the customer service counter and wave at the manager-on-duty when I enter the store. They

For a different perspective, note that some grocery stores are actually starting to scale back on use of self-checkouts.

I'm very tech savvy, but loath self-checkouts.If I buy 6 cans of pumpkin, I have to scan each can instead of just taking one can and running it over the scanner. It's easier just to have a cashier ring me up.

The Giant grocery store near me had a good setup, two "quick" self-checkouts with a small ledge next to the bags bags, and four "long" self-checkouts with full belts, where your items would collect at the end of the belt where the bags were.

They tore them all out and put in eight of the "quick" kind which sounds better (8 is more than 6) but actually sucks (good luck with more than a couple items). The last time I was there, three of the eight were out of service to boot.

There is another plug-in solution that works for mail scheduling via google's own servers, so it will function while you're traveling or otherwise not on a computer.. You could probably run both simultaneously if need be; Boomerang has other features worth using as well.

I just realized that I hadn't been back to talk food since Thanksgiving!

I had started by wet-brining the turkey for 3 days, and then dry brining it (salt/herb mix under the skin with oil) for 2 more days. It was a kitchen sink kind of brine. I literally just sniffed all of my spices and chose the holiday scents.

Anyway, I ended up overcooking the turkey, but it was still really moist and well seasoned. I thought it was a touch salty, but everybody else loved it. The wet brine was definitely worth it. It saved my ass when I accidentally got the turkey up to 185*

I also made my own cream of mushroom soup for the green bean casserole. This was the hit of the holiday! It was creamier and more flavorful than using the canned crap, and it really shone through. I also added a thin layer of bread crumbs so that the crispy onions stayed crispy.

You have to post your recipe for the homemade cream of mushroom, and then also the recipe for the casserole again sometime. You don't have to do it now, of course, but have it prepared so I can bug you for it sometime in the future. Thanks!

Here's the cream of mushroom recipe (it's based on this one) :

Ingredients:
? 1 box button mushrooms, sliced
? 1 box baby bella mushrooms, sliced
? 1/2 yellow onion, diced
? 3 tbs butter
? 3 tbs flour
? 3 cloves garlic, chopped
? 4 green onions, sliced
? 1 cup heavy cream
? 1.5 cup chicken broth
? 1/8 tsp thyme
? 1/4 tsp salt
? 1/4 tsp black pepper
? Additional salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:
? Caramelize onions in lightly oiled large saucepot
? Add 1c of broth, mushrooms and thyme and cook until the mushrooms are tender
? Puree the mushroom mixture until there are small chunks and set aside
? Create a medium roux with the flour and butter
? Add the salt, pepper, cream, and vegetable puree and stir until everything is incorporated
? Add the rest of the broth and stir the soup until it comes to a boil
? Reduce to a simmer and let it thicken (I let it simmer for 3 hours)
? Puree if the texture is too chunky. (I found it a bit mushroomy and chunky, so I added another ~1/4 cup of heavy cream and pureed it for another minute)

The green bean casserole recipe was fairly simple:

*add ~2 cans of green beans to a casserole dish
*pour cream of mushroom soup over top of the green beans
*put a small layer of bread crumbs over top of the green beans
*chill overnight
*add 2 containers of crispy onions to the top of the green beans
*bake at 350 for 40 minutes

OT: The Trump Derangement Syndrome continues, with navel-gazing into how Not-Power Girl will survive the evil Trump.

The night after the US election, like a lot of people, I was looking for some light escapism. It seemed the perfect time to catch up Supergirl; what better show to hide away from the state of the world with than one that's been hailed for its optimism and progressive values since the release of its first trailer? I'd fallen behind on the series, so I ended up starting with an episode that had first aired in September. "Welcome to Earth" revolved around a female, Hispanic president signing an immigration reform bill into law.

Suddenly, I was right back in the real world. What had been cautiously optimistic when the episode had premiered just a few weeks before was now upsettingly fantastical. In the wake of Donald Trump's win, a pro-immigration woman of color being elected president seemed less realistic than the alien trying to kill her.

Needless to say, it was derpy and somewhat funny. Interestingly enough, I managed to get a warning in the comments section because of "trolling", sometimes towards obvious trolls, LOL.Can't warm up the echo chamber in these opinion piece; it melts the snowflakes.
