...yielding Twitter praise from the Office of Government Ethics.

    Not sad.

    1. Ted S.   9 years ago

      Government has ethics?

      1. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   9 years ago

They have an office, dedicated to trying to find it.

I heard it was one guy shoved into a supply closet in the basement, who spends most of his time being ignored by everyone else in DC.

Online Sleep Therapy Can Help Insomnia, a New Study Found

One in ten adults have diagnosable insomnia, the New York Times reports, though the condition tends to affect women more than men. The study, published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, found that the typical form of treatment for insomnia ? cognitive behavior therapy ? can be effectively delivered online through an interactive program. Scientists from the University of Virginia enlisted 303 people between the ages of 21 and 65, with half trying out the six-week online therapy product and the other half receiving a digital "placebo" of education and advice on insomnia.

The program, called SHUTi, involves traditional cognitive therapy techniques, such as sleep restriction ? where people set regular "sleep windows" ? and another called stimulus control, which breaks the association with lying in bed and watching a movie or eating, according to the Times. It also asks people to log in daily and record each night's sleep, and tries to reframe certain thoughts, like the idea that you can't function without a good night's sleep.

They voted for Hillary just because Pelosi asked them to ?

WOW. Even Obama couldn't get that handled.

I once saw a pic of Pelosi with the San Fran city honchos. It went something like this.

The chief of police was a man who once was a woman. Another was a woman who was born as a man, and on and on and on.

Not one of them was a straight up cis herto shitlord of either binary gender (did I say that right ?).

My point is that they would have voted for Hillary even if Pelosi had been out of the pic for decades.

Trump's Treasury pick Steven Mnuchin is behind some of Hollywood's biggest movies

Mnuchin ? who in April became Trump's top fundraiser ? has been a major behind-the-scenes player in Hollywood, beginning in 2004, when he co-founded Dune Capital. The hedge fund invested $500 million in a bunch of Twentieth Century Fox films, including "The Devil Wears Prada," the "X-Men" franchise and "Avatar," the highest-grossing box office film ever. The 2009 James Cameron sci-fi picture grossed $2.79 billion worldwide.

He is listed as an executive producer on 31 films, including "The Lego Movie," "American Sniper," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "The Intern," "How to Be Single," "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," "Keanu," "The Legend of Tarzan," "Sully" and "Suicide Squad."

    KDW: Outlaw Librarians

Writing can be a genuinely revolutionary act, as it so often was in our own revolution. But simply making literature available can be revolutionary ? and dangerous. The publishing concern established by Lodewijk Elzevir (which lends its name to the modern publisher Elsevier) in the 16th century published a great deal of what would come to be known as (another gift of Communist-inspired neologism!) samizdat, including some of the later works of Galileo, the distribution of which was forbidden. Some brave man had to smuggle that manuscript out of Florence and into the Netherlands, just as other brave men would smuggle copies of Doctor Zhivago into the Soviet Union and Bibles into North Korea.

There is something wrong with your society if you have outlaw librarians.

Amazing research suggests what many of us have known for years: Millennials suck.

"Nearly one-fifth of males between the ages of 21 and 30 who haven't completed college aren't working today and aren't in school?an increase of 125% since 2000. Yet many of these young men are satisfied with their situation because it frees up time to play videogames, according to research by the University of Chicago's Erik Hurst and colleagues."

    http://www.wsj.com/articles/tr.....1480464660

"A staggering 22% - almost one quarter ? of unemployed young men did not work the previous year either. These individuals are living with parents or relatives, and happiness surveys actually indicate that they are quite content compared to their peers, making it hard to argue that some sort of constraint, like they are miserable because they can't find a job, is causing them to play video games. "Fidel Castro is dead. My heart aches. It really does. Today, on my day off, I set to get to routine chores I've neglected the last year or so, but the sky is grey and grim; like my soul. I couldn't stop thinking about this towering, charismatic individual who fought on all our behalf. Yes, all of us. Sometimes it takes a great man to put the weight of human misery on his (and one day her! I hope and pray that in my lifetime I will see a woman as strong, brave and endearing as Fidel. One who could chomp on a cigar as crustily as any man! This is the dream; the hope Fidel left us) shoulders to lift us up and shout, 'See?! SEE these people! You can't ignore them as they are hoisted upon my shoulders! I will keep them there until you all face your own filthy hypocrisy and greed!

This is Fidel. Fidel is hope. Fidel is love. Fidel is loyalty. Fidel is joy. Fidel is class. Fidel is liberty. This is the the lesson he has left us.

    (cont'd)

    1. Rufus The Monocled   9 years ago

He has given more to freedom than any leader ever could. By way, of literacy and health care he left people a gem of what true freedom looks like. He made sure it was not a privilege but a right. And he could only do so as a strong dictator. There was no need for 'democracy' because democracy lets in too many wolves to exploit the people. The system of government IS Fidel. He could take a decision on a dime if necessary. There is no need for Cuba to sign treaties on climate change. All it needed was Fidel.

Fidel was a pit bull. A ferocious jaguar. A raging rhino in the face of imperialism. Here was this one man. This incredibly special man standing as if 10ft tall facing down the mightiest and most corrupt of all nations the United States of America. His pointing weapons at that satanic country was the single greatest act of defiance of the 20th century. In that one act, he summoned all the oppressed to nestle in his soul.

I'm shaking as I write this I kid you not. This is how important he was for humans of all creeds and races!

      1. Rufus The Monocled   9 years ago

And what of the dead and imprisoned? Do you not see it sometimes takes blood and tears to achieve a caring society? Those people did not want to partake in the experiment and could not be trusted or called upon to bring forth a new Cuba wallowing in the utter death and despair brought on by Batista. Sometimes you need to crack heads to reach your goals and objectives. But Cuba wasn't a revolution for an island; it was a global civil war. I wish people could just see the big picture.

He did not live long enough to see his revolution through. There's much work left to be done. Literacy can still achieve more. Achieving a perfect healthy society within its grasp. It will be up to his successors to continue the dream. The path he charted for Cuba. It won't be easy.

The charm and beauty of Cuba is in its rustic nature; its architecture and ever endearing classic cars! You have not lived to witness the genius of a Cuban playing his trumpet on the hood of an old car as the sun sets behind him! Oh, what I'd give to see it one more time! The sense of humanity I felt that day could never be replicated. And it is because of Fidel. What is decadence to uninformed Western capitalists, is vitality and innovation to us! We fight to keep at bay the dark and static forces of Western capitalism. We must keep our soul pristine.

A claim requires evidence, dude, even the claim that CO2 has no effect on climate. Don't pretend that your posturing isn't every bit the tribal BS you accuse others of engaging in (only minus the backing of science).

      1. Juice   9 years ago

A claim requires evidence, dude, even the claim that CO2 has no effect on climate.

An extremely small number of people claim this, and no one listens to them anyway.

        1. Tony   9 years ago

Yeah over the years this "debate" has become a veritable bumper-cars of goalposts.

          1. Juice   9 years ago

Please find a link or a quote or anything where someone who isn't a marginalized crackpot has made this claim within the past 20 or so years. And don't be fooled by subtleties. "Recent anthropogenic increases in atmospheric CO2 do not have such a dramatic effect on the climate as to necessitate overhauling the global economy" is not the same as "CO2 has no effect on climate." Please try not to be disingenuous.

You do know who you are talking to, right?

            2. Tony   9 years ago

I watched as creationists started babbling about bacterial flagella before they were finally relegated in shame to theme parks in Kentucky. It's the same story all over again. I sat and watched lineups of idiots on this very site argue that there was no such thing as climate change, period. Things have crept ever-so-slowly along to the point where now the argument is "scientists shouldn't discuss policy!" I don't think the corporate interests behind the decades of denier propaganda particularly care where the goalposts are as long as we keep burning more oil than we need to.

It is of course utterly fallacious to suggest that the status quo (meaning unchecked burning of fossil fuels) has a neutral effect on the global economy. The claim that mitigation will be economically catastrophic is, of course, an excuse for what I mentioned above, and is totally absurd.

              1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

The claim that mitigation will be economically catastrophic.... is totally absurd.

The idea that anything the US does - no matter how extreme - equals "mitigation".... is beyond absurd.

The entire CO2 output of the US and EU is swallowed up in *slight margins of error* in the growth of developing-world emissions.

We could all go back to living in caves and it wouldn't make a fucking difference if you can't stop industrial growth around the world.

Which means your electric cars and your other chickenshit "Green" efforts in the West are nothing but ego-stroking.

That's at least a little better than "scientists are smart and you should never disagree with them." It's like a religion and "scientists" are the priests. It doesn't matter if their proclamations have anything to do with their background; they're scientists so they're right about everything. Even worse, these people can't understand research papers so they rely on journalists and the like to tell them what it means, and they're usually wrong. It's just all so sad.

Another goody: How Obama's climate change legacy is weakened by US investment in dirty fuel

Since January 2009, the US Export-Import Bank has signed almost $34bn worth of low-interest loans and guarantees to companies and foreign governments to build, expand and promote fossil fuel projects abroad.

That's about three times more financing than the taxpayer-backed bank provided during George W Bush's two terms, and almost twice the amount financed with loans and guarantees under the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush and Bill Clinton ? combined.

Countries include Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

FRIEDMAN: The people behind the campaign were anonymous, but one of them was quoted in an article on The Daily Beast in May.

CALDWELL: He's - he claimed that people were working on a campaign to reclaim Pepe from the "normies," quote, unquote, by making anti-Semitic versions of him, right?

FRIEDMAN: So the theory is that Pepe started appearing in hateful memes so that celebrities and others would stop using him. The news media picked up on it. Hillary Clinton's campaign referred to Pepe as a symbol associated with white supremacy. It even popped up at a Clinton speech.

      1. A Cynic's Guide to Zen   9 years ago

FRIEDMAN: Did you hear it? Someone interrupted her, shouting Pepe Freedom. At this point, views have diverged. Some still think of Pepe Freedom as an Internet joke. Apparently greenies across Europe are using the spectre of Fukushima to get countries to close nuclear power plants and switch to magic pixie dust renewables.

FBI to gain expanded hacking powers as Senate effort to block fails

A last-ditch effort in the Senate to block or delay rule changes that would expand the U.S. government's hacking powers failed Wednesday, despite concerns the changes would jeopardize the privacy rights of innocent Americans and risk possible abuse by the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Democratic Senator Ron Wyden attempted three times to delay the changes, which will take effect on Thursday and allow U.S. judges will be able to issue search warrants that give the FBI the authority to remotely access computers in any jurisdiction, potentially even overseas. His efforts were blocked by Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the Senate's second-ranking Republican.

The changes will allow judges to issue warrants in cases when a suspect uses anonymizing technology to conceal the location of his or her computer or for an investigation into a network of hacked or infected computers, such as a botnet.

i think its an example of what made the internet awesome, back when 90% of it was mostly homebrewed websites.

Islamist wanted to poison kindergarteners, detonate suicide vest in school.

    1. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

The court was told that he also suggested in the two page letter written on A4 paper if it might also be possible to crash the van into the kindergarten. He further asked if it was permissible for him to "rape the girls of the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad," it is claimed.

Why do I get the feeling that's the part of it he really wanted to do?

it really puts a new spin on "Teen Agnst"

Mohammed O., 17, one of the alleged temple bombers who carried out the assault in April which wounded four people, planned to sell the toxic ices before blowing himself up in the midst of the children.

Yusuf T., 17, was accused of being the leader of the so-called Temple bomber group. The young Salafists first allegedly formed their murder gang on Whatsapp and built bombs from ingredients ordered from online retailer Amazon

...The court was told that he also suggested in the two page letter written on A4 paper if it might also be possible to crash the van into the kindergarten. He further asked if it was permissible for him to "rape the girls of the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad," it is claimed.

      Ugh. I hate A4 with a passion.

By the way, that Tulsa police officer who shot a man back in September has been indicted, and she will stand trial.

I've noticed an interesting trend. Stories like that, which are almost indefensible for officers, make a splash in the headlines and then seem to disappear quickly. But then there's Charlotte, where Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed. It (seemingly) got a ton more coverage and then turned out to be almost certainly a good shoot.

The trend is that police and their defenders go very quiet on the nasty stories, without any attempt to defend them, and they quickly get forgotten. When there's a defense for their actions, the story blows up by people arguing both ways. But those stories are more likely to turn out in favor of the police than the stories they try to ignore, so it seems like there's a ton of coverage of, for instance, Darren Wilson types who end up justified and less focus on the Betty Shelby's.
