Obama Expands Targets for Airstrikes, Ohio 'Shooter' Actually a Stabber, Dylann Roof Will Represent Himself at Trial: P.M. Links

-
Adam Cairns/TNS/Newscom President Barack Obama's administration has decided to classify Somalian Islamic terrorist group Shabab as being covered by the current Authorization to Use Military Force put into place after the Sept. 11 attack. This increases the extent by which Obama—and subsequently incoming President-Elect Donald Trump—can use military force against a group of terrorists that didn't even exist back when the attack happened.
- Despite the initial reports of an "active shooter" on the campus at Ohio State University (and the now-instantaneous "When will we do something?" narratives that follow), the attacker did not use a gun. Instead he crashed his car into students and then jumped out and started stabbing them with a knife. He was fatally shot by a University police officer. Nine people were injured, one critically.
- A President Trump may refreeze relations with Cuba, which would be bad news for its suffering citizens (even taking into account dictator Fidel Castro's death).
- Obama will end his term as president trying to push through loads of new regulations via executive actions that Republicans are promising to reverse.
- Dylann Roof was given permission by a judge to represent himself in his trial for fatally shooting nine people at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina. He faces the death penalty.
- California cities are considering taxing streaming services like Netflix in order to grab more money for oversized city employee pensions—er, I mean, "municipal services."
- Today's blindingly stupid outrage involves an ice rink in Japan freezing already dead fish into its ice.

Today's blindingly stupid outrage involves an ice rink in Japan freezing already dead fish into its ice.
Another fetish from them?
Troy McClure approves.
Sounds fishy to me.
Pretty icky.
[narrows gaze at well-educated commentator]
Now I know I hate him!
He's your huckleberry.
Shouldn't that be ichthy?
These are Fukushima fish. The rink is open after dark and they really spice up the ambiance.
Hello.
Obama is just doing it so he can say 'I tried but you know' in the future.
What, putting dead fish in an ice rink?
Now we know why Kanye is in the hospital.
+1 Fishdicks
He will be permanently retired. Why does he give a single fuck? Because he is a brainwashed ideologue? A true bleever?
They are going to give the fish to the poor when its all over, right?
Who eats frozen fish?
Poor people? Innuit?
I will say that the last Stanley Cup Finals in San Jose, that shark shadow pregame show was nifty as fuck. They should follow the lead of those crazy Chinamen in Japan and freeze sharks into the ice, with the fins sticking out.
Everybody's copying Detoilet's shtick.
Or they could make hockey interesting by adding shark pits to the rink
Oooh, or sharks with lasers!
Sharknado obstacle hockey.
I thought that was just what they called Canadians players?
Now that Zoolander is PM, better get while the gettin' is good:
CBC/Radio Canada asks for $400M in increased government funding to go ad-free
See how many fallacies you can find in that article.
Yup, they figure he's at least a two-termer, so free money to make shit people don't want to watch! Just like BBC!
Without Dr Who and pointless crap like that, of course.
He is going to be a two-termer. That's the depressing part.
Why?
Just a hunch. Unless he keeps up his foot in mouth disease and the economy tanks, it's not out of the realm of possibility. People don't get worked up over this stuff like we do.
Same reason as Obama. Pliant media, not very competent opposition, culture war, and you can add "Trump is so embarrassing, Zoolander so dreamy!" to the pile.
Long standing dislike of the Tories after Harper, Liberals tend to stay in long historically, desperate need to be different than the Americans, etc.
Well, look what happened down here. Do you want, I dunno, William Shatner as PM?
If Canada were smart, you'd go all libertarian and free market. After all, the U.S. isn't.
If Canada were smart
There's your problem.
Unfortunately the prevailing opinion is that Europe is a better "not the US" to emulate.
Bingo.
Because of our insecurity towards the USA.
What they should do is do America better than we do.
Welcome to what Papineau and and bunch of 19th century Canadian patriots wanted.
Didn't work out that way. We started flipping socialist in the 1930s and now it's a core part of too many Canadians' identities.
I was at the Grey Cup last... free tickets. And there was a resounding booing going on when he had his pre game pre recorded speech. I smiled a bit.
Without Dr Who and pointless crap like that, of course.
Have you seen the shit like Being Erica, Mr. D and Little Mosque on the Prairie?
(Republic of Doyle wasn't bad at the start, but that may be a result of my love of Krystin Pellerin and her accent)
What I meant was, for all the blather about "state funding", BBC can actually sell their schlock for big money.
CBC can't even do that - make a show like Top Gear? They'd resign en-masse first.
Canada has no indigenous car brand so it's bound to suck.
It's funny because in the 90s CBC produced a couple of extremely cynical dark comedies that were really good...and all about how scummy TV networks in Canada were. The Newsroom basically presented CBC News as inaccurate fearmongering dreamed up by scumbag producers, and Made in Canada was all about asshole tv executives. Did the CBC just not review what they were making then? Because I can't see them producing that now.
Those two shows were indeed very good.
And they produced The Kids in the Hall.
But now, I fear, they'd go all full stupid PC/SJW.
I always assumed CBC was convinced these were satires of American television, just with Canadian content plastered on top. And no one was gonna disabuse them of the notion...
Didn't the CBC make "The Red Green Show"? That was great TV.
KInda.
Why doesn't her shirt tuck in if she needs a jacket and scarf? Is her character retarded?
Lemme guess. Without the CBC Canada disintegrates?
Reliance on ad money damages their political neutrality?
While reliance of government money makes them pure?
Purity is proven by the fact that govt. money will flow regardless of economic condition, or what programming they put on. What more evidence do you need?
Government money will stop real quick if they broadcast something the government doesn't like.
They are Brave Truthtellers, and won't be silenced!
Besides, there's literally zero chance they'd ever say anything that PM Zoolander disagrees with. And their hope is that, if he's at least a two-termer, it will become the new normal and Tories can eat dick when they finally crawl back into power.
Can you damage something that doesn't exist?
Like a Timbit dropped into a vat of molten poutine gravy.
Are you done?
Ze glasses, zey do nothing!!!
Fuck, it's goggles, not glasses.
[Self-flaggelates in shame]
Some of wouldn't mind if Quebec seceded, and the Cree seceded from Quebec.
And Montreal secedes from Quebec.
Only if Montreal city council secedes from Montreal! We don't want Quebec politicians staying.
The dream of a fully Balkanized Canada is in our reach.
Dylann Roof was given permission by a judge to represent himself in his trial for fatally shooting nine people at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina. He faces the death penalty.
"Your Honor, Trump made me do it."
I'm surprised that it wasn't in the headline.
It is. You have to wear the special glasses to see it.
I think the judges are on to that represent yourself then claim ineffective assistance of counsel thing.
I want to see him put into a pod with about a dozen born again blacks who aren't going to hurt him, just love him and try to be his friend for the rest of his long, long life. Unless he truly comes to regret what he did and hangs himself in the shower. That would be okay, too.
You, sir, are a great American.
just love him
STEVE SMITH APPROVES OF THIS MESSAGE
No, no. If we're going to STEVE SMITH the guy, I want the whitest, most racist cracker father rapists in SC in his pod.
"I want to see him put into a pod with about a dozen born again blacks who aren't going to hurt him, just love him and try to be his friend for the rest of his long, long life."
Who are you to question their punishment? /punch-line to an elaborate joke
Dylann Roof is the Natural Man now?
I AM THE LIVING MAN!
My lizard-brain (sorry, Mr. Lizard) approves this destructive gesture by a killer
Mr. Lizard lives in all of us.
STEVE SMITH LIVE IN ALL BUT THE MOST FLEET OF FOOT
Despite the initial reports of an "active shooter" on the campus at Ohio State University (and the now-instantaneous "When will we do something?" narratives that follow), the attacker did not use a gun.
Still, this draws attention to our lax gun laws.
Nobody needs a high-capacity knife block...
Was it an assault knife?
There was a forward grip, yes.
It might have even been serrated! (I hate serrated knives, might as well carry a cheap steak knife around)
Serrated knife? You mean a saw?
A serrated knife is very different from a saw. You see, in a saw, the serrations....ah, never mind.
actually work as designed? Every serrated blade I've ever had has been worthless for sawing AND cutting.
A serrated blade will cut the fuck out your finger, when trying to cut anything else.
Its a fair cop.
How topical. I'm missing half of a fingernail right now.
Get you a good blade sir.
I keep honed Wusthofs on my magnetic rack at home, but this was at someone else's house.
All three of my knife accidents in the last 10 years were away from home.
Take it with you.
You should check out the F-Dicks cutlery. Primo stuff IMO.
"Hey Bishop, do that thing with the knife!"
" I'm missing half of a fingernail right now."
Look in the cole slaw.
Look in the cole slaw.
I lost a sizeable portion of my thumb and some blood while grating potatoes once. I think I got most of it out, but if not I turned a bunch of friends into cannibals over brunch.
I dunno, Brett. I just used a serrated knife to make assless cutouts in my chaps, and it worked fine.
Liar! There is no such thing as assed chaps. (please prove me wrong with pictures)
bacon-magic, you are dangerously close to my windmill, and I have this old horse and a lance.
Did it have one of those shoulder things? Common sense, people!
But no bayonet lug.
Handle...sharp blade...these military-style assault knives weren't intended for civilian use.
No, you don't understand. It's because assault rifles are so hard to obtain in Ohio. Just think of the damage he could have caused with one of those. This is how you spin it into a gun control argument.
It had one of those shoulder things that go up!
Was it an assault knife?
This was, apparently, a vehicle mounted, crew served M2 stabber.
Only military personnel, and police agencies (for when they make too many) should be so equipped.
Nobody needs a high-capacity knife block...
Only government-licensed professionals, anyway.
Nobody needs a high-capacity knife block...
If you want to keep someone away from your house, just throw a knife through the door.
Still, this draws attention to our lax gun laws.
Using a knife exploits a dangerous loophole.
Our College students are officially children after the literal tears that flowed from them due to this election.
Won't someone think of the children?
Neil Young hardest hit.
What, too soon?
California cities are considering taxing streaming services like Netflix in order to grab more money for oversized city employee pensions?er, I mean, "municipal services."
Net Neutrality was supposed to fix that.
I wonder which VPN services would be best to invest in if they go ahead with the plan. Someone is going to make bank, but it won't be any city in California.
You don't need a VPN. If it's anything like the one in Chicago it's absurdly based on billing/credit card address/zip code.
I think you underestimate California. It's the same state that produced Dianne "not enough spying" Feinstein.
I wonder which VPN services would be best to invest in if they go ahead with the plan. Someone is going to make bank, but it won't be any city in California.
They'll tax your subscription.
Net Neutrality was supposed to fix that.
Was it? Was it really?
Instead he crashed his car into students and then jumped out and started stabbing them with a knife.
When will this country finally enact common sense gun control?
Right around the time it gets some goddamned common sense, I'd wager.
We need to get rid of all the roads!
Well, the attacker was reportedly Somalian. Maybe this was a political statement.
Then we'll be just like Somalia!
This guy gets it.
BLAME IT ON THE ROADZ
If the Top Men licensed who could carry a car in public, these things wouldn't happen.
"California cities are considering taxing streaming services like Netflix in order to grab more money for oversized city employee pensions?er, I mean, "municipal services."
Gee, I wonder how long it would take me to change my billing zip code.
Man, remember when we were going to tax email to help support the Post Office? The best part is that apparently journalists asked Bill Clinton his thoughts on a completely fictitious bill. Fake news can even insert itself into the past!
I like it when fake news inserts itself into the future.
Dylann Roof was given permission by a judge to represent himself in his trial for fatally shooting nine people at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina. He faces the death penalty.
They say a man who represents himself in court has a lunatic for a client...
Lawyer propaganda.
The guy is guilty as hell and virtually assured of getting the death penalty. His only hope is to screw up the trial somehow and make them do it again. So, representing himself is the smart move.
This.
He *is* competent.
#thisiswhywehavetrump
President Barack Obama's administration has decided to classify Somalian Islamic terrorist group Shabab as being covered by the current Authorization to Use Military Force
So next time a Somali grad student runs amok he can just drone strike them?
Obama does loves him some drone strikes.
FIFY.
Long known that Kenyans and Somalis don't exactly get along.
There is a running gag about that in Kenya.
Is every single asshole in that picture on their phone?
Third guy in doesn't.
His mom must not love him
I thought the same thing. Nobody to tell he's okay.
It looks like he's.... looking at someone else's phone.
He's molesting the guy in the blue vest with his male gaze.
The guy in khakis isn't. The Asian girl behind him and the guy behind the guy on the far right both have their left hands in their pockets, but their right hands are obscured. IMO it looks like the former isn't and the latter is, but it's hard to tell.
The healing has already taken place, and life has returned to normal at OSU.
They're retreating to their safespaces, Playa. Stop microaggressing them!
"Look, I'm trying to warn you, 'Open book, open notes' means we are so fucked."
Its true. Better to bookmark the "how to apply which formulas page" and pray for an identity you recognize.
California cities are considering taxing streaming services like Netflix in order to grab more money for oversized city employee pensions?er, I mean, "municipal services."
Soon there will be scant few things left to tax. They'll have to tax taxes.
Then they'll be even more like Europe where you pay VAT on the excise tax!
I read that as "exercise tax." Wait a sec.....hmmm.
In LA, we have a gross receipts tax. Businesses pay taxes on their gross income, not their net income.
So taxes can turn a weakly profitable business into a losing money business.
"Dylann Roof was given permission by a judge to represent himself in his trial "
It's a death penalty case. Now he has a built-in appeal, in addition to the one he already gets.
http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us.....ck-n689076
He didn't just use a knife. He was also a Somali refugee. You might want to mention that Scott. Gee what a surprise you didn't.
Oh, look. This guy lived in Pakistan, too. I'm starting to think they may not be our secular allies like we were told 20 years ago they were.
Eh, they may have been at the time (to a greater extent than now) but times and people change.
Time and change will surely show,
How deep thy knife wound...O-HI-O
It's all part of his secret gay agenda.
Who ever accused Scott of having a secret agenda? He is pretty upfront about wanting his pony every time I have seen.
I believe Playa was referring to the *Somali*. Right?
Scott's gay agenda isn't that secret.
Was he dressed in a Confederate flag? If not, it's clearly not terrorism, so the only thing that's important is what kind of evil spirit inhabited the weapon, and made him do this. We need to get our top Exorcists of Weapons on the case, stat!
"Witnesses say that the perpetrator in today's knife-shooting is a White Pakistani."
[golf clap]
It's really depressing what capitalism has done to some of these refugees. Of course he snapped after the abuse he's taken from Trump supporters.

Mayor Joe Hogsett. Somehow I misread that at first.
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for all of you. Even the trolls.
My plague vectors brought something home that laid each of us low in turn. I'm thankful that it got me a day after my wife so we were each at full strength during the other's down time.
That vector being a bottle of moonshine?
In this case, plague vectors means children. Trying to find a sympathy card for your mother-in-law that says, "sorry your grandkids poisoned you" is tough.
I lucked out. I hosted everyone at my house this year, so my parents offered to come by on Thursday morning to take the all of kids off of my hands. Little did they know, I did all of the prep work and cooking on Tuesday.
So the wife and I fucked, had mimosas, swam, layed out by the pool for 2 hours, fucked again, and took a nap. And then pretended that we had been cooking all day.
Jesus, do you want more kids? Wait, are you fixed?
She just got an IED (I know, that's just what I call it).
Who did she nail the 2nd time around ?
Shit, what was the old commercial where she throws some premade frozen food in the oven and when it's ready dishevels herself, throws some flour on her and comes out triumphant to a table filled with expectant family only to be hailed a hero for her "home cooking"?
Rice Krispies
Oh damn. I only partially misremembered that.
Well done, you. You are a true champion of pop consumerism.
Thanksgiving was fine. I almost thrice died on Friday, but seem to have survived drowning, freezing and being eaten by coyotes while bare-ass naked in the desert.
Rough date?
I passed out rum drunk in a jacuzzi that had been turned off while skinny dipping with friends and woke up face down and shivering violently several hours after everyone else had gone to bed. There were fresh coyote tracks circling the jacuzzi when I went to find my clothes the next morning.
The "date" portion of this evening has been redacted to protect the innocent.
The coyotes took one whiff of Jesse and hightailed it out of there in fear.
Some times you apply the rufies, and sometimes you wake up with a sore ass and no clear memories of the night before, eh?
You misspelled "dessert."
*in Texas accent*
Do you like whipped cream?
Worst thing about the immigration problem is the coyotes.
In today's episode of "UnCivil tries to find liquor that he likes", I picked up a few different bottles of stuff I haven't tried before. So far I've opened all of one.
The one I tried was "B?renj?ger Honey and Tea". As expected, it was on the sweet end of the spectrum. The first good sign was that the only strong aroma I picked up was the base ethanol scent, and not a very strong one for the alcohol content. The taste was a lot like Krupnik, but far milder and sweeter, with a gentler initial contact and less pronounced aftertaste. I'm now sad that the bottle I got was the two-shot airline size instead of a full 750mL one. Oh well, I can go back another day.
I'd wager that the "B?renj?ger Honey and Pear" will turn out to be agreeable as well. (And even the base B?renj?ger, but I didn't pick up a bottle of that.)
Hrmm... part of me is thinking that a blend of Krupnik and B?renj?ger might even out the disadvantages of both (B?renj?ger is too far on the sweet side, the initial taste of Krupnik could use to be softened). I've got three bottles of Krupnik, I might try that and see. Of course it could create the worst of both worlds as well.
Any predictions?
You will be attacked by Romulans for stealing their booze.
Romulans
That's a weird euphemism for "sorority girls."
It's from the fact that they all eat Romulan noodles which is also a euphemism.
I thought sorority girls drank white zin and chardonnay.
I'm reminded of the time my dad saw I was enjoying a bottle of merlot, so he bought me a bottle of white merlot. It was so awful I wouldn't even serve it to Tulpa.
I laughed way too hard at this.
You will not be happy.
You've tried it?
Or is that a prdiction based upon my quantity of complaints?
I would never drink honey liquor because I am a man.
And yes, that was a reference to your past complaints.
Mead is pretty awesome. And it will fuck you up. Although, we can argue whether it is a true liquor as it usually isn't distilled or concentrated.
I tried Mead early on (and discovered Krupnik while searching for it). I was disappointed that it contained the same chemical that makes wine unpallatable to me. (Apparently very few people can even smell it, as I doubt that many people would separately invent the same lie)
Second the mead. Best shit I ever brewed. Takes forever, though.
Third on the mead. I'm rather partial to the stuff produced by this meadery. Last time I traveled back to Alberta I brought two cases back, 'cause the Philistines that run the liquor control board here in British California can't be arsed to offer regional product that isn't B.C. wine ('cept for some mead-ish stuff from the island that's almost candy-sweet).
Fallentimber's Dry Mead is a revelation. I could drink it 'til my liver shut down and die a happy man.
If it's good enough for Beowulf, it's good enough for you.

Too many noisy neighbors?
Indeed.

Shut up, man! She's having a Reason baby and I want to know if it's named after me!
What's wrong with a rum and coke?
Celebrate Fidel's death.
The purpose of the exercise of buying new types of booze is to expand the list of things I don't object to imbibing.
Anything that has liqueur in the name is appropriate only for pouring over pancakes in the morning. Simplify your life UnCiv, buy a good whisky and drink that. Leave the panty remover for people who wear panties... oh wait...
That is brilliant, PM. Ima buy a bottle of Mexican coke just to do that. Sweet, sweet Coca-Cola capitalism.
Cuba Libre.
Doesn't a Cuba Libre require a twist of lime?
Require?
Yes. It's not just a rum and coke. It's a rum, coke and lime.
Yes, it's not a Cuba libre unless it uses sugar Coke.
You will be drunk on sickeningly sweet alcohol.
+70-80 Proof.
Sugar is the cause of bad hang-overs.

Don't know if you like scotch, but I've been on a kick for Bruichladdich. It's a very nice unpeated Islay.
There's something that leaches out of wood that I can smell and taste in any barrel-aged brew. It does not agree with me. Apparently it's not terribly common to even be able to smell it.
Understood. So, no whiskeys. That does put a damper on things. I'm told there are some excellent Cacha?as, if you're into rums...
I'll have to look into that.
So...you have a fine taste for wood. Good to know.
It seems more like a distaste. But I understand you were making a crude attempt at innuendo and implication.
No it was just a joke.
OH the euphemisms
The OSU stabber is now reported to be a Muslim refugee. Quick, change the narrative from "more gun control" to "Islamophobia"!
We need more common sense Islamophilia.
Then we accuse them of whitewashing. It's like the perfect blacklash.
No, the new narrative will mix both.
White nationalist Richard Spencer's ex-classmates decry him ? by raising money for refugees
The War on WASPS begins.
This is like watching Oklahoma and Texas A&M. I mostly just root for a meteor strike.
The only good reason to do something nice is to be an asshole to someone else.
Spencer is also, hilariously, a weeaboo who thinks Asians are better than white people.
Didn't The Bell Curve make it clear that Chinese, Koreans and Japanese are smarter than Europeans? If you go by it, you must acknowledge their superiority.
Of course, IIRC #2 or #1 were Ashkenazi, but hey, Spencer will compromise and take the half of that. Not the "Ashke" half, granted...
It seems like antisemitism is a mixed bag among the "alt-right". A lot of them will at least admit an ally of convenience in Israel.
If there's proverbial Venn diagram of extreme left-right nuttery, it converges on putting differences aside long enough to go bag some Jews.
Anti-Semitism in the alt-right isn't because the Jews are inferior, it's because they're ethnic 'Others' who push for their own needs rather than those of the 'white race'. The alt-right think they're basically evil geniuses who are destroying white culture and preserving their own. Outside of the outright Nazis most just want to ship them all to Israel.
Well, and then there are those who are actually Jewish, like Mike (((Cernovich))).
Let's not even get into the halfsies, like (((Yiannopoulos.
I'm actually totally unfamiliar with Cernovich, I'm more used to the Radix crowd declaring that NO JEWS SHALL BE A PART OF THE ALT-RIGHT.
Cernovich may get a pass as his ancestors washed themselves in the Blood of the Lamb, though his Twitter makes it clear that he still identifies as a member of the Tribe.
In the Venn diagram of that motley assembly, he's about 99.999 percent in the PUA/Manosphere wing with a picometer of "Brown immigration lowers the mean IQ of our great nation."
Are left parenthesis give or receive? Or does it depend on which way Milo is facing?
The latter.
He's a switch Jew.
I go by Vox Day as Pope of Alt-Right, and he's quite clear on the "white people in white countries (including US)" and semi-coy about Jews not being white.
I'm willing to buy that there's a Schism, but I'm not complacent about percentage of racists, since I know fucking well I'll stop being white once they fire up the ovens.
His name is Theodore Beale.
Teach the controversy.
Like Catholic clergy, I refer to him by his ordination name.
Cernovich would be a heretic, at least Monophysite if not outright Mormon.
I know fucking well I'll stop being white once they fire up the ovens.
I don't know about that. The goofiest thing to me about the alt-right is how goddamn internationalist it is. The whole Pan-European identity thing is just weird. No more lectures about the virtues of the glorious Anglo-Saxon over the Hun. Hell, they're a white nationalist movement that treats the Irish like they're human or something.
You might get a pass for Putin alone. Me, I'm a guy who looks like a Bosnian terrorist while somehow being Dutch and Metis.
Evil? Yes. Geniuses? Yes.
Is it so hard to make that leap?
If you consider Ashkenazi Jews to be non-European. I think they're pretty damn European, they just have ancestors outsourced their religion and promoted intelligence within their in-group.
He is also devilishly handsome.
He definitely looks like a Nazi fuck, I'll give him that.
White people who lack their privilege
I've keep seeing white capitalized when referring to white people. What's up with that?
I also keep making typos.
Because outside of the Starcraft universe, ethnonyms are usually capitalized.
It's not just an adjective?
Sure, when referring just to skin color. But referring to a whole racial cline (e.g., Asian, Hispanic/Latino, etc.) it's a proper adjective. We're not referring to just anyone with white skin; we're referring to a specific geographically-bound genetic population (i.e., an ecotype).
Tips for raising a mass murderer: (1) encourage them to learn to kill people in the military but don't teach them any other skills for when they get out, (2) strongly encourage them to get married and have a kid at a young age preferably with a foreign bride who doesn't integrate well in her adopted country, (3) report them to the FBI for extremist tendencies and make sure they complete the CVE program (4) name them 'Storm' (5) attack their home countries with drones (6) teach them: "You are a good kid with a good heart - now just trust your conscience to tell you right and wrong".
Did I miss any?
You are not allowed to point out how many mass shooters were in the military.
Why not?
Is it even statistically significant?
And if so, why would it necessarily say something about the military, instead of the people who commit those acts (i.e., which is the cause and which is the effect)?
On the statistical significance comment:
There are about 22 million veterans in the U.S., and roughly 90% of them are men. There are about 240 million adults in the U.S., and roughly half of them are men. That means about 16% of men are veterans. That's a nontrivial percentage, and so it would take something like at least 20% of (male) mass shooters to comprise a statistically significant over-representation.
Very good. Now apply the same logic to Muslims.
?
Did I make a comment about Muslims?
I will remind you the next time you do.
Uh, okay. Did I do something to offend you that warrants such strange behavior?
#1 doesn't square with Richard Gelles's research (mentioned here):
Wouldn't those people be at the bottom of the pecking order? Might be taking work frustration home with them.
Teach them that all the priblems in the world are caused by capitalism and they should vote for commies to kill people and take their shit.

Clinton lawyer demands NC stop recount. These people are depraved.
This is just further evidence as to why voluntarily becoming involved in politics should carry the death penalty.
Hah, and when they just happen to find a few thousand votes here and there, what are you gonna do about it?
Brexit had a lawsuit, you are getting a recount. Important thing is not to allow the mob to do what it wants, because democracy is so dangerous.
I don't know how but I wish and hope all this blows spectacularly up in their hypocritical faces.
Losers.
What? It's not part of Scott's agenda? You're slipping, John.
The Beloved State Broadcaster That Wants $400 Million Extra Per Year also explains what the problem is with America (well, one of many problems).
Media is just too truthful for Trump
But at least they kick the crazy lefty part, too. They are becoming a bit inconvenient, after all.
By the way, in continuing "Paradox doesn't give a shit about PC" news...
I picked up Stellaris on the weekend sale, and I'm still in the "goddamn there's too many systems and mechanics" phase of learning. But you get to choose the ethos of your alien race before you start playing, and this is what they have listed for 'Individualist':
Community is a means to an end, not the end itself. Only by empowering the individual to reach their maximum potential do we achieve true freedom. Freedom of thought, of speech, of movement, of trade.
We must recognise that "society" is but a convenient fiction, the by-product of individuals working toward parallel, overlapping, and contradictory goals. As it should be.
What are the benefits of individualism? Better happiness, more likely to colonize, more energy and they hate slavery. A lot.
Meanwhile, collectivism gives massive public approval for slavery.
Libertarian moment?
I hope you didn't pay 7 bucks for plant people.
Fuck that, I'm used to Paradox DLC policies by now but that's just ridiculous.
I did a playthrough as libertarian space otters and then uninstalled the game to avoid more days lost to video game OCD.
Free-form thought:
If I were to start a new club with Reasonoids as members I'd call it the Water Buffaloes - hats included.
And now it's time for Silly Songs with Larry. The part of the show where we sing a silly song.
I was secretly hoping for "Where is my hairbrush" but I suppose that one is more salient.
Did you check the sand next to the coyote tracks?
Led by a Grand Poobah?
Yes.
Joe Rockhead.
I thought Buffalo was its own plural. Like Moose.
It's true.

Don't make me send up that fuck up Gazoo after you.

It's called a murder of Buffalo.
Know what? Forget the whole thing. You people are IMPOSSIBLE.
Rude, eh?
I thought it was a trample of buffalo

A President Trump may refreeze relations with Cuba...
As long as the fish he puts in those relations were dead first.
The only thing Obumbles did right in eight long years, and The Donald's gonna screw it up.
FARG!
Trump Meets With Petraeus as Secretary of State Fight Continues.
Remember when it was a big deal when a Sec State couldn't be trusted with secrets?
What difference, at this point... does it make?
Bet she knows now.
😀
Schadenfreude toward a Clinton is no vice.
He did pay his debt to society, unlike other Secretaries of State.
I'm teh disappoint at the lack of articles blaming Castro on McKinley for destabilizing Cuba since Cuba has pretty had an almost unbroken line of dictators for almost a century and the previous "democratic" regimes had a history of fraud, corruption, and revolts. Sure Valeriano Weyler created reconcentration camps but at least the Spanish Imperialists provided stability, right, right?
They were as stable as your mom on a rock hard cock.
Is this the "whataboutism" that I've been hearing about lately?
Isn't libertarian foreign all about Whataboutism? See Richman, Rockwell, Raimondo and Rothbard.
That's the intersection of "libertarian" and "Russia-defending", no?
Which makes whattaboutism the only line of defence they have.
"California cities are considering taxing streaming services like Netflix in order to grab more money for oversized city employee pensions?er, I mean, "municipal services.""
Turns out SF does not have a balanced budget. It was 'balanced' on the presumption that a tax measure would be voted in (and surprisingly wasn't - YAY!), a presumption that federal aid would continue 'cause Shrillary, and a shortfall in pension funds since people are living longer and the investment returns haven't been as good as that FL swampland salesman promised (all *surprising* since earlier this year when the budget was 'balanced')
Yeah, pension bailouts seem rather unlikely now, don't they?
My solution: a tax on the salaries of only public employees. That would be fair.
You know how Henry Ford was a Total Genius, because he paid his employees well enough so they could buy his cars?
Obviously if you pay public employees more, their tax bill will go up and finances of the state will be saved! Huzzah!
Doesn't a tax on streaming run afoul of that "Net Neutrality" crap the Left likes to espouse?? Or is that forgotten now that there's plunder to be had??
?Despite the initial reports of an "active shooter" on the campus at Ohio State University (and the now-instantaneous "When will we do something?" narratives that follow), the attacker did not use a gun. Instead he crashed his car into students and then jumped out and started stabbing them with a knife. He was fatally shot by a University police officer. Nine people were injured, one critically.
And gun violence saves the day!
YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO NOTICE THAT.
California cities are considering taxing streaming services like Netflix in order to grab more money for oversized city employee pensions?er, I mean, "municipal services."
They need to just chill.
BOOOO!
I have this nagging feeling that there's a simple solution to this problem...
Well, this is awkward.
Stabber featured in OSU newspaper piece earlier this year, complained of feeling unsafe on campus.
Projection.
In order to get his safe space he had to kill people.
Think how afraid he was after Trump won the election. I think we see who the real victim is here.
Oh, my.
Was he also afraid of getting shot by cops?
"I'm a Muslim. It's not what the media portrays me to be.... But, I don't blame them, It's the media that puts that picture in their heads"
Uh huh. It isn't the stabbing that's the problem, you see. It's the media.
If only they gave him those prayer rooms.
And you note he "has to" pray 5 times each day; he has no say in the matter. Why, you might assume he's not a moral agent at all.
Muslims don't feel safe around kaffirs. That's why they need to kill them all.
nice handle change.
The intersection of radical Islam and campus Marxism produces astoundingly incompetent terrorists.
Nobody mentions this much but did you guys know that the Cuban Communists were supporters of Machado and Batista too?
Any ol' psycho mass-murderer was ok by them.
Okay? You mean adored. Psycho mass-murder is sine qua non among commies.
California cities are considering taxing streaming services like Netflix in order to grab more money for oversized city employee pensions?er, I mean, "municipal services."
They should just raise the price of a dog license to $1000.-.
Or lower the salaries for government employees to whatever the prevailing minimum wage is.
Or lower the salaries for government employees to whatever the prevailing minimum wage is.
The squirrels demand higher wages!
SF could pay for a lot of pensions with the $240 million a year we spend on "helping the homeless."
Seems like it would just be cheaper to pay them with a bottle of thunderbird to shit in a toilet.
I think the real reason is because the US has been waging a campaign against Al Shabal ALREADY for the past few years, and the Obama admin is possibly concerned that subsequent administrations might actually look into whether or not some of the things they did were technically "legal" or not under their own authority.
Of course that won't happen. No one holds anyone else accountable, lest they themselves ever be held to task. But still... i think its cute that Obama has managed to keep 3 out of 4 wars he's conducted mostly-under-wraps for the past 8 years.
Unchecked power to drone the fuck out of brown people is toats fine when our guy has it.
One of those "sports" which tends to improve the gene pool:
"Chess grandmaster dies in 12-story parkour plunge"
[...]
"A young Russian chess master died Saturday when he slipped from the 12th-floor balcony of a Moscow high-rise.
Yuri Yeliseyev, 20, former world junior chess champion and a grandmaster at age 17, apparently lost his grip while engaging in parkour, an urban sport that involves leaping over man-made obstacles such as roofs or fences.
The BBC reported that fellow chess grandmaster Daniil Dubov said Yeliseyev could not hang on after jumping from a window ledge to a balcony."
http://www.sfgate.com/world/ar.....640475.php
All I ask is that they video tape it.
The dude is Russian. They often do.
They always videotape it.
tape? Oh, right, Russia.
Good lord. Chess grandmaster, parkour enthusiast, dead at twenty? What have I been doing with my life.
Surviving past 20.
I could've been dead at 20 if I applied myself.
*kicks dirt*
One of those "sports" which tends to improve the gene pool
It's nice that his death compliments both 'sports' equally. Nothing says "I'm not a limp-wristed chess weenie!" like taking up parkour and plummeting to your death because you are, in actuality, a limp-wristed chess weenie.
It's not just any sport that can take your run-of-the-mill board game athlete and turn them into street pizza.
Suuuuper genius.

Brady Bunch brought America to India. Maybe this somehow explains Dalmia.
So whatever is going in India sounds like a good time for Dalmia to engage in some Modi-bashing since I'm sure he fucked up somehow. But no. If she does write something she'll probably blame it on Trump's success encouraging Modi...
relations were still pretty frozen, even after the lifting of the embargo.
the regime used the concessions to declare its own personal victory, and justification for refusal any further compromises. "we already got what we want"
Its not unlike the Iranian posture in the wake of the nuclear deal. they are aware that the Americans want the appearance of success, so once they've got their agreement on paper, they do everything they can to deny them that appearance. (*immediately launch missile test to see if the US will squawk)
Many of the sanctions were created by law, weren't they?
Yes, i think some things are still "law" because they were never repealed - but the executive can determine how these international relations are enforced. travel bans, contraband, enforcement of low-level stuff i think is now gone. But i think there are still plenty of obstacles on the books as far as actually trying to invest or buy property in Cuba. In both direction, i'd add.
Ideally, Trump could talk to Raul and say, "well, after your brother's sad death, we can turn over a new leaf in our relations. How about a treaty of peace and friendship? Of course, under our constitution that would require a 2/3 vote in the Senate, so you're going to have to think of concessions which will appease those old mossbacks - Senators, am I right? So how about a few concessions like the ones I have on this list..."
Supposedly OSU attacker was interviewed in school paper "The Lantern" recently : "I wanted to pray in the open, but I was kind of scared with everything going on in the media," he stated. "I'm a Muslim, it's not what the media portrays me to be."
If true, I'm not sure if he had a firm grasp of Irony.....
Darn! Late with this post, didn't see above.
The article is linked above. Complete with photo spread.
This *has* to be parody, right? RIGHT?!
Look out, OJ Simpson trial. We have a new contender for prime-time Court TV.
"Trump's election suddenly created an awful lot of international Trump-branded targets for terrorists"

Yep, they really didn't know where to put the bombs up until now.
That darn Trump!
"That Darn Trump!" is a great name for a skit or a series of memes.
That's My Bush!
Whoa.
Cuz, ya know, of course that'll make Americans less sympathetic to Trump. It certainly wouldn't unite his supporters and his detractors against a common enemy or anything like that.
You know, if shit is gonna get blown up, I prefer it happen "internationally".
And there's no way any of those bad guys could spot a US gov't building. Nope, no way.
They don't know what Ford Crown Vics and cheap suits look like.
Campus police ended the incident in less than a minute.
Sheesh, talk about your rush to judgment!
Monsters of Movie Soundtracks World Tour Kicks Off

That kid watched one too many Jackie Chan movies.
So they set off the alarm to warn kids to hide from the cops I guess.
I like how the narrative did a complete 180 in terms of political narratives. Starts out reported as another crazy gun murdering people at a school, now apparently it's a muslim attacking people with a car and knife.
What a joke the media has become. Apparently all they can do nowadays is emote and read from Twitter feeds.
Ah. So *that's* what "Breaking News" means!
Thank God he wasn't able to get hold of a gun. Think just how much worse this could have been. We need to start discussing robust gun control laws to prevent that form happening.
Is a "robust gun" like an "assault weapon"?
Its like a Blunderbuss, but with more ass on it.
Like this?
No, more like this!
I don't like to diss people's hard work, but my initial thought was, "Why didn't you just re-skin a vacuum cleaner"
I blame the AAA.
Suddenly the Media Rediscovers the Cronyism in (selected) Green Energy
The Ohio incident is very similar to one in the Akihabara district of Tokyo back in June 2008. I was living in Japan at that time. A man drove his car into the pedestrian zone and then got out and started stabbing people.
This happened in Columbus earlier this year

A Liberal Confesses = "I nearly became an Alt-Right-Racist, because the Internet is so powerful"
"indoctrination"

What, exactly, is the value of *anonymous* confessionals?
The literary form of the "I ONCE WAS AN ENEMY, BUT NOW I SEE THE LIGHT"-letter strikes me as something straight out of communist psyops.
I know many people on the 'liberal' end of the political scale. They have never once used the term "rightwing" in conversation, even to describe policies favored by the right.
Concern trolling in editorial form.
in case you miss it - note how the above guy wrote the same piece for Salon *twice*, once where "he used to be libertarian" and once where "he used to be a GOP die-hard"
I am reminded of this excellent Mr Show sketch
I am subscribed to the awesome History of Byzantium podcast, and in one of the episodes, the host mentioned Teaching of Jacob, a 7th century tract about importance of Jews converting to Christianity ostensibly narrated by a converted Jew. So, it has a long, if not proud tradition.
It strikes me as an ancient form of rhetoric intended to "educate"* your peers on Who The Enemy Is.
"I have lived in their camps, and seen their ways, and they are horrible!"
Its also to make them seem more evil than they are - because the person 'confessing' relates his 'inner feelings' .... which is really just a way of projecting unstated 'hidden motives' onto the perceived enemy.
Its also a way of tarnishing anyone who might be 'on the borderline'
See = now the "Racists" aren't just the self-identified Alt-Right... they're *everyone* who might talk about any overlapping themes. - See Yasha Levine and his guilt-by-association suggestion that Libertarians - and Reason Magazine in particular - are to blame for "Normalizing" the nazis of the Alt-Right
Sam Harris is "alt-right," now?
I think I have a headache.
"alt-right" is a term ripe for overuse as an insult until it becomes totally meaningless, like "neocon".
It's already meaningless. So there is that.
Any sort of meaning it did have will be lost soon. Welch and Gillespie will be called "alt-right" soon if they haven't already...
Oh not to mention that semantically speaking the terms "alt-right" and "neocon" pretty much mean the same thing: "Alternative Right" and "New Conservative".
Shut up, Nazi!
If you don't like Muslims, you're a Nazi.
Of course, something ,something, history is racist anyway.
Articles like this and they wonder why people don't find them appealing....let's call our opponents names that will show them!!
I'm sorry, a Guardian op-ed is not absolution. This man shall be struck three times in the shin with a tire iron. Three the strikes shall be, the number being three.
I noticed that they disabled comments for that piece. Heh.
A Liberal Confesses = "I nearly became an Alt-Right-Racist, because the Internet is so powerful"
This whole thing reads like a Jack Chick comic, or perhaps a testimony at a tent revival.
God, I hate The Grauniad.
hello everyone!
Hi.
Hello.
Ay yo
*fistbump*
Saw this headline:
Suspect in Ohio State attack identified as student
My brain initially parsed it as "Attacker was some SJWish townie that told everyone he was an OSU student even though he wasn't" rather than "Police have told the press who the attacker was"
This is why students were upset 2 days ago. Hopefully the buffoons in this story gained a little perspective.

The indoctrination was complete.
That guy needs an intervention stat, before his wife catches him out behind the barn with a dog-eared copy of Guns and Ammo.
The literary form of the "I ONCE WAS AN ENEMY, BUT NOW I SEE THE LIGHT"-letter strikes me as something straight out of communist psyops
I liken it to the "I Once Was Lost, But Now Am Found" tent show revival meeting genre. And they all join hands and thank the Lord that this sinner has found his way back to the path of righteousness. Singing and crying ensue.
There was a guest on Tom Woods' podcast (good show; check it out) who made an interesting point:
He said that you'll very often find people who say, "I used to read Karl Marx and believe in communism, but then I discovered Mises and Rothbard, and I realized that free markets are really the best option for all of humanity".
But you'll rarely (if ever) encounter people who say, "I used to read Mises and Rothbard, but then I read a few Paul Krugman columns, and I realized that free markets don't work and that we need the government to regulate our entire economy!"
The leftists who are willing to lend an ear to free market ideas often come around. This is why their community discourages it so much; they are trained to just plug their ears and shout "racist racist racist!"
I think this is because the works of free market thinkers are so logically robust that once you go back to reading someone like Karl Marx, you realize just how poorly constructed his arguments are.
Particularly as the tenets of liberalism seem much more similar to articles of faith than fundamental principles arrived at through careful study.
Speaking of early fondness for Castro what about James Bond? Ian Fleming had some Castroite sympathies at first such as in The Quantum of Solace and For Your Eyes Only. He also lived in Jamaica quite a bit which would have given him a more personal connection to Cuba. However in the Man with The Golden Gun Scaramanga often works as a Castro assassin (while previously being a Batista one) while also in league with the KGB.
Hector Gonzalez?
10-20 inches at the mountains by tomorrow. maybe i should call out sick?

It works better that way.

good point. but snow!
fucking Squirrels. i hate you.
They hate you too.
OT: How would we go about facilitating a free market in college education?
We all know that the modern American university is a bloated, inefficient institution. I also think that many here would agree that short, intensive, job-focused programs would be cheaper and more effective than a four-year degree program full of expensive classes that provide no benefit to the job at hand.
However, if employers are demanding these overpriced degrees, what can we do about it? How would we make the jump from the current system to a system of intensive training programs and on-the-job training?
It's what they would have wanted.
The other 2 times I went through my fingernails were at vacation rentals. So of course, there was probably some alcohol.
I can't remember exactly for some reason.
