I got mine through my paternal line to my great-grandfather. You can only use your maternal side for births after 1948. There are no cut off points; the only thing that breaks the chain is when your ancestor was naturalized as a citizen of another country.

In my case my nonno was born in Canada *before* my bisnonno was naturalized, and that is the key. That made my nonno Italian at birth, and as long as they don't acquire some citizenship through means other than birth, my descendants will be Italian citizens as well.

If your father is Italian and was naturalized or otherwise became Canadian *after* you were born, then you are Italian.

Just to expand on arbitrary. I seem to recall something along the lines of if your maternal grandparents married before 1923 then you were screwed - something like that. They were married in 1921 in Canada so that disqualified me. Or if you were born before or after a marriage (again I forget the details) you don't get it. I have an example of my cousin's family where everyone gets a passport except one guy (the biggest Italophile of them all) but because he was born after a date they prescribed he was screwed. He's eternally peeved about it. Heck, I'm annoyed.

I know people who were actually afraid for their life when Trump won. Taking some ideas from Scott Adams, I determined the following.
1) Fear is the best way to convince someone to vote for you. Just make them afraid of the other guy and you have their vote.

Anyway, when I saw the news that Sessions will be the AG, I had to actually look at it again to make sure I was reading it correctly, or if maybe it was a type-o. Then I did a search and found out it must be right. Is it just me, or does Sessions seem like a really odd choice for AG? I mean, I also was immediately thankful that it wasn't actually Christie or Guliani, who seem to be out of the mix altogether now, despite all of the rumors. Doesn't surprise me. Also, if correct, appears Nukeler Newton is gone too.

I can see that Trump wants to satisfy lots of conservative insiders, and show them he's going to be Team Red all the way.... and that appointing people like Sessions and Flynn and Pompeao helps mollify those people.

The question is = are they appointing someone like Sessions to "clean house" at the justice dept, and get rid of all the lefty political flaks.... or are they appointing him so they can ramp up the war on drugs?

The latter is my fear. But i think the idea behind the appointment is that the conservative establishment feels they can at lot of what they want done through rule-changing at the DoJ
