Brickbat: Sounds Like the Right Man for the Job

Jimmie Thorns has resigned from the Louisiana Tax Commission after a local TV station found he has not paid property taxes on a business property in New Orleans for some 30 years. Thorns currently owes $140,000 on the property.

And here I was thinking that not paying taxes was a perk for being a tax commissioner, or at least politically favored. Has Al Sharpton paid his taxes yet?
I do declare, corruption, in Looseana, say it ain't so.
But, frankly, do you give a damn?
Tomorrow is another audit.
'I don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan'
Cause I'm from O-HI-O!
We better beat the shit out of the Spartans tomorrow. And our guys should windmill back to the bench after every touchdown.
No taxation with representation. I like it.
Let me get a jump on Reason by posting this article about Ben Shapiro getting banned at De Paul University.
I come at this issue from a different perspective than the Reasonites - De Paul is a Catholic college bound by Papal decree to incorporate the Church's teachings into the entire educational program, including outside speakers.
So banning anti-Catholic speakers on that basis wouldn't really bother me, if that was what the college was actually doing.
But I suspect it's not Catholicism De Paul is enforcing, but political correctness.
To test this, let's take a look at other speakers who *weren't* banned.
So brave
"Courage Against Racism: Organizing In White Communities For Racial Justice In Times Of Black Lives Matter
"Tuesday, November 1 at 6:00pm to 7:30pm
"LPSC 120AB
"Join us for a dynamic talk with movement author and educator Chris Crass on anti-racist organizing in white communities. How can we inspire white people to join racial justice efforts in these times? How can more and more of us, who are white, step up to both support the black-led grassroots movement and also bring racial justice leadership into our communities?"
Chris Crass explains his worldview
Ha ha, just kidding, here is the real link.
Chris Crass makes me jump, jump.
Which part of Catholic doctrine involves denigrating Christian missionaries?
"We See Nothing, We Hear Nothing, We Do Nothing: Concealment And Normalization Of Torture In History"
"Integral to the construction and reproduction of white supremacy and hegemony around the globe was a conscious, overt policy of torture, mass extermination and genocide, carefully justified and normalized through imperial, colonial and Christian missionary historiographies and narratives, religion, literature, journalism, self-serving "philanthropy" and "altruism", as a necessary adjunct to and an indispensable instrument of domination and dehumanization."
Well Ben Shapiro seemed mature and managed to communicate to the special snowflakes the message that was needed, using only two fingers. Back in simpler times a simple one finger salute would suffice. But today's special snowflakes are a bit dense. So now we need a two finger salute.
Was Katherine Mangu-Ward invited?

"On the eve of the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, a panel of six distinguished scholars, activists, and artists from around the country investigates the case for anarchy and the question of the ethics of participation in the electoral process. Though the next day's election is billed as The Most Important Election Ever, we will have a reasoned conversation about the senses in which "the lesser of two evils" is not really a choice, the possibility that voting is a distraction from true political participation and action, the concern that the electoral process is part of the "bread and circuses" meant to keep the ruling class perpetually in power, and the claim that any vote within the system is ultimately a vote for empire, capital, hegemony, violence, racism, and oppression."
Stephanie McMillan sounds really orthodox
"What does ending the oppression of women look like? How will we know when we've achieved it? *When we're allowed to get free abortions whenever we want?* [emphasis added] When we no longer have to fear or experience rape? When we stop sex trafficking? When we all feel positive about our bodies and minds? When all girls in the world are educated? When we achieve equal pay?
"We want all these things, of course. We need them. They're essential. But are they enough?"
Of course they aren't enough. These people whine for a living. The last thing they want is to run out of things to whine about.
Stalling Civil Rights: "Bathroom Bills" And Transgender Inclusion
"Monday, November 14 at 11:50am to 12:50pm
"Lewis Center, 901 25 E Jackson Blvd
"In the past year, a wave of states have followed North Carolina in proposing or passing legislation that restricts transgender people's access to public bathrooms, spurring a national debate about privacy, gender norms, and trans inclusion. Transgender activists have been fighting back against these "bathroom bills" as an issue of fundamental dignity, safety, and Constitutional rights. In this lunchtime panel, activists and educators will discuss the history and significance of bathrooms as a civil rights battleground, the current legal landscape surrounding bathrooms both locally and nationally, and action steps for making bathrooms more inclusive. Panelists will include Crispin Torres, Community Educator for Lambda Legal, Tanvi Sheth, Staff Attorney and Board Member at the Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois, and Karen Tamburo, Title XI Coordinator for DePaul University."
Meanwhile, the Church believes otherwise, as illustrated in these remarks by Pope Francis -
""A great enemy of marriage today is the theory of gender," Francis told a group of religious men and women and pastoral agents in Georgia.
""Today, there is a global war trying to destroy marriage? they don't destroy it with weapons, but with ideas. It's certain ideological ways of thinking that are destroying it?we have to defend ourselves from ideological colonization," he said....
"Gender theorists say that people should be able to identify as male, female, in-between, neither or both, and discourage the stereotypical gender-based divisions, such as dolls for girls and trucks for boys."
I never really understood the split personality of the CC Eddie. The most conservative organization on the planet buys into Social Justice idiocy? What the hell is that? A commie pope? WTF?
Authoritarianism by any means.
I believe the present Pope is not a communist, but may have drunk too deeply of the Peronist Kool-aid.
Paradoxically, he's a better defender of capitalism than certain of its avowed supporters, since he supports that without which capitalist development is greatly hampered - that is, the natural family.
IIRC Daniel Bell referred to the cultural contradictions of Capitalism - when, by virtue of work, sacrifice and deferred gratification, you make a pile of money, then the next generation, unless properly taught, will use the money, and the cushion it affords, to sample all sorts of alternative lifestyles which are harmful to the accumulation of wealth.
Stalinist, Peronista, Chavista, Bolivarian, Nazi, Maoist, whatever. All shades of authoritarian pinkos. You cant really have one without the other.
The Louisiana Theft Commission? How can that even be a -
Oh, it's just my automatic word replacement, huh?
Our reputation for corruption is mostly due to Edwin Edwards. These days the corruption is more or less on par with the rest of the country if you don't count New Orleans, and we are nowhere near Chicago levels.
Quit raggin' on us already. Edwards went to jail.
'The only way I can lose this election is if I'm caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy.'
Some people have a Long memory.
One of the things Edwards did that gave him the reputation for being over the top was loading all of his friends on an airliner and taking them on vacation on the taxpayer's dime. Even his supporters complained about that.
My, how things have changed.
WHY ON EARTH WOULD HE QUIT HIS JOB? He's going to need that income to pay an attorney to keep him from paying back taxes.
I think his original plan was to just clear up the misunderstanding while he was on the committee.
No civilized nation that even pays lip service to the concept of private property would steal $140,000 from someone merely because they owned something.
