Profs, Students Want UVA President to Stop Quoting Jefferson: It Creates a Hostile Environment
Thomas Jefferson: founded the United States, and also owned slaves. Both things are true. Sorry.

Thomas Jefferson isn't just a founding father of the United States—he's the founding father of the University of Virginia. But some UVA professors and students wish the administration would stop reminding them.
Nearly 500 members of campus signed a letter to UVA President Teresa Sullivan criticizing her for continuously including Jefferson quotes in emails—particularly in her post-election message to campus.
"For many of us, the inclusion of Jefferson quotations in these e-mails undermines the message of unity, equality and civility that you are attempting to convey," read the letter.
Jefferson owned slaves and committed atrocities "against hundreds of human beings," according to several professors who signed the letter.
"The point is that the move that says, he owned slaves, but he was a great man, is deeply problematic, and I think it will continue to prevent us from being the kind of inclusive, respectful community that President Sullivan and the rest of us envision," another professor told The Cavalier Daily.
But… Jefferson did own slaves, and was also a great man. That may be problematic, but it's undeniably true. Jefferson is an important historical figure responsible for a number of praiseworthy accomplishments, and also a flawed human being who mistreated a great many individuals, in accordance with the standards of the time.
It would be easier, of course, if historical figures were always universally good or universally evil, but reality is more complicated and contradictory than that. It falls to modern students of history to recognize the virtuous deeds of people like Jefferson while also condemning barbarity.
That's something Sullivan understands perfectly well.
"Quoting Jefferson [or any historical figure] does not imply an endorsement of all the social structures and beliefs of his time, such as slavery and the exclusion of women and people of color from the university," she wrote in response to the letter.
Here was the quote that had so incensed campus: in her post-election unity email, Sullivan had reminded campus that Jefferson once described UVA students as "not of ordinary significance only: they are exactly the persons who are to succeed to the government of our country, and to rule its future enmities, its friendships and fortunes."
Quoting Jefferson complimenting UVA students actually offended them? Come on. "Inclusivity" does not and cannot require UVA to toss Jefferson down the memory hole.
And yet Noelle Hurd, an assistant professor of psychology and co-author of the letter, had the audacity to suggest to The Washington Post that uncritically quoting Jefferson could create a "hostile environment." Should Jefferson's shortcomings be examined? Of course. Does failing to do that produce a "hostile environment"? Of course not. It's reckless to imply otherwise, because the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights takes hostile-environment accusations extremely seriously (more seriously than the letter of the law requires, in fact). They are the basis of a relatively new form of hurt-feelings based censorship on college campuses.
By all means, UVA should grapple with Jefferson's mixed legacy. But it's wrong to suggest that invoking him is in any way a violation of federal law.

I'd love to be in her tenure discussions.
She probably has a horrible CV, which is why she is pulling this stunt.
Might.
Depends on evidence of thiccness

"Like, OMG, are you taking my picture right now? OMG."
She looks like Jefferson had some influence on her.
Now THAT'S funny.
I'd terminate her immediately, since she apparently has such a hang up with the U's founder, she would be a better fit at a different institution.
Jefferson did not anticipate that one day a university would be sometimes hard to distinguish from a childcare center.
I don't think you'd hear a lot of wailing about quoting from Jefferson in a childcare center. They have better things to do.
Like Play-Doh and coloring books?
Zing!
But we can still wear Che t-shirts, right?
I thought of this too. I have little doubt that most or all of the people who signed this letter would be happy to uncritically quote such luminaries as Marx or Chairman Mao while wearing Che shirts.
Just attribute quotes by Jefferson to Che. Problem solved.
They're different. They hated and killed all the right people.
Or Pol Pot...refounder of a nation
Well yes, enslaving the masses instead of one race is progressive, don't you know.
Equality, comrade.
You do know that Che was a racist and murdered blacks, do you?
How can that be? He's on a t-shirt!
Next time, read what's on the back.
It says "Hecho en Nicaragua."
Presentist thinking - the hobgoblin to rational thought.
There's your problem right there. You're trying to teach tyranny to idiots, and Jefferson is antithetical.
[The] law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
There's your problem right there.
People love to forget who he was talking about, the clergy.
Progressivism isn't a religion?
Not all dumb belief systems are religions, just a majority of them.
No, but it was largely created by religious people.
We've heard so much about the religious right in recent years that it's easy to forget how much influence the religious left has had at various times.
Do these people know about the Arab slave trade? I have a feeling these people think that Thomas Jefferson personally invaded Africa and stole all of the black people. The Europeans just took advantage of a pre-existing slave trade, since slavery was found in every culture on every continent for the first 10,000 years of human civilization. It's not ridiculous to claim that the descendants of American slaves are the luckiest black people on the planet, even with all of the inequality and bad things. We can do better, but people don' realize how far we've come, and how much better we are at human rights than every other civilization in history.
Back when Arabs were Mohatmans. Ah, the changing of the times.
There is a story out there - and I am too lazy to look it up - of a university professor who annually does a quiz of incoming students to gauge their history knowledge. A shocking number of them believe slavery began and ended here, in the States.
It's harder to recognize the historical existence of the Arab slave trade since they killed the young, castrated the men and culled those who were too sick to continue working. They didn't leave enough survivors to have any descendant populations alive today. But don't forget, it's the Europeans who were the most immoral slavers in history.
They would literally enter homes and steal children from families.
And nobody ever calls for reparations from the Saudis...
Because they're all dead and they weren't allowed to have living descendants. From a monstrously immoral point of view, the Muslims had some pretty decent foresight about what it means to have ethnically identifiable descendants of a slave population living in your society.
You're thinking of the manner in which Arabs treated their own slaves. The arabs were also instrumental in the transatlantic slave trade. Arabs were often the ones who brought the slaves from the interior to the slave ports on the coast.
The Europeans just took advantage of a pre-existing slave trade, since slavery was found in every culture on every continent for the first 10,000 years of human civilization.
Considering the point about Che Guevara t-shirts and the persistent prevalence of government, it's arguable that slavery is still widespread even to this day. Welfare spending pushed off onto untold generations who will spend ever greater portions of their lives in public and publicly-funded schools. Sure, you don't have to pick cotton, but you have to work and fork over your earnings to your master(s).
And these fuckups are clamoring for more of it.
Admittedly most forms of slavery allowed for manumission... ours did not
Will they want them to stop quoting the Declaration of Independence??
Thomas Jefferson wrote that!
These are "intellectual elitists" in an "ivory tower" in an echo chamber with themselves.
The prog constitution: Declaration of Interdependence.
Don't google that if you prefer your brain in its natural unscrambled state.
Damn. It IS a thing.
IT IS?
Wikipedia has an entry for it. began during, guess what, FDR's screwup of the Great Depression.
Is that similar to the Declaration of Inderpendence?
Same thing, pretty much.
Are you kidding me? They just pretend it doesn't exist.
Don't be absurd. The whiningAfor "intellectual elitists" please substitute "ineffectual re-tweetists"
I never see anyone comment on it, but for me it is
highly significant that in the first draft of the Declaration,
which Jefferson wrote alone, he blamed the slave trade
on King George III, saying it had been thrust upon the
colonies (not an exact quote). The southern states would
not have gone along with it (and obviously did not), but this
always made me think that if he had his way, our country
would have begun with the abolition of slavery. Sad.
So circle jerk?
So Thomas Jefferson thought that women and blacks attending American universities would be a bad thing for the quality of a university education. Fast forward to 2016 and clearly the quality of a university education is total shit.
I'm not saying he was right, but these SJWs are unwittingly making the case on his behalf.
My friend in Holland laughed when he heard Hillary and Bernie promising 'free university.' It was tried there and it ended in total failure.
You can't fool basic laws of economic forever.
Who said anything about forever?
Just long enough for them to take credit, get re-elected, and retire on a cushy pension before the rubes catch on..
Well, maybe that didn't work for Hillary and Bernie, but others will try it.
It could work! First thing, kill all the nay-saying mathematicians. Then... Utopia!
Too many know-nothing losers get into higher education as it is, and many even manage to obtain degrees due to the incredibly low standards of these institutions. Clearly the solution is to make the problem many times worse by making colleges and universities free for everyone!
From Monticello.org:
"Throughout his entire life, Thomas Jefferson was a consistent opponent of slavery. Calling it a "moral depravity"1 and a "hideous blot,"2 he believed that slavery presented the greatest threat to the survival of the new American nation.3"
"At the time of the American Revolution, Jefferson was actively involved in legislation that he hoped would result in slavery's abolition.5 In 1778, he drafted a Virginia law that prohibited the importation of enslaved Africans.6 In 1784, he proposed an ordinance that would ban slavery in the Northwest territories.7"
Just because a person partakes in societal norms of their times does not make their actions a blanket endorsement of those actions.
Uh, okay Mr. Trump Supporter.
SMBC skit about time-travelling Jefferson in the modern age:
Modern Person: You hated slavery, but you kept a bunch of slaves? What was up with that?
Jefferson: Well, the Constitution was supposed to gradually eliminate slavery. How'd that work out by the way?
On the surface, it's hypocritical and perhaps it is on some level, but yes, he did oppose it intellectually. The FF couldn't eliminate it though (calculating other pressing issues needed more attention) and hoped and trusted future leaders would deal with it once and for all.
^This.
Yes. Slavery is economically inefficient, and they expected it to wither away. Then along came the cotton gin, and cotton+slavery took off.
Plus, Sally Hemmings was, by all accounts, a hottie. No way he's letting go of that.
The same could be said of environmentalists and their use of electricity, fossil fuels, etc. They do it because its the societal norm and our infrastructure is established for it, although they profess to abhor the situation.
Just because a person partakes in societal norms of their times does not make their actions a blanket endorsement of those actions.
The thing that gets me is the acontextual black/white labeling of it all that can be dispelled with just a few minutes' critical thought. Say you were absolutely devoted to freeing the slaves at the time, what were you supposed to do? If you went around shooting white slave owners or liberating slaves by force, you'd be hanged from a tree and the slaves would be recollected and resold. So, you pretty much had to buy slaves.
Once bought, unless you bought a whole community at a time, you couldn't just let them go. They'd either starve in the wild, estranged from society, or simply be re-enslaved by the next slave owner who happened across them. Even if you bought and established a community of free slaves, you'd have to defend it rather vigorously and, because freedom/anti-slavery, you'd have to do so in a manner that didn't construe ownership.
It's astounding how truly ignorant of not just US but "their own" history these people are. Like Lincoln, their owners, or both said to any/all slaves, "You're free." and the world turned to color and the lollipop guild came out to sing.
But Washington freed his slaves (not Martha's) twenty five years before Jefferson died. It was possible to be an emancipated black man in Virginia in 1800. By the time of the Civil War, some freed blacks were wealthy enough to,and did, own slaves themselves.
Did...did we just find real life Bo Cara?
Kind of funny how Bo disappeared from the message boards once he got called out for making factually impossible claims about his law school graduation and bar exam.
He disappeared right around the Preet incident. I think he thought commenters would actually be jailed over it, and when they weren't, he had a mental breakdown.
I really need to find a way to hang out here more often. I always miss out on the drama.
Dammit, i do NOT want Bo to be a fellow alumnus of The University. My hugeass diploma doesn't need to lose any more value, thanks.
Here's proof that a university degree is no guarantee that someone can't commit willful stupidity.
In most cases I thought a university degree was a prerequisite for the indoctrination needed to commit that willful stupidity..
The founding fathers were not perfect. They did leave a template of which more freedom for all could be built. They fought the super power of the day and won and birthed a republic. Much blood was spilled to free the slaves and give equal rights to all through the years. Much of this came form the thoughts and writings of Thomas Jefferson.
Dear Reason,
For many of us, the inclusion of Jefferson quotations in these e-mails SugarFree stories undermines the message of unity, equality and civility that you are attempting to convey
Please stop allowing them to be posted.
53% of White women love SugarFree's brash prose. "Grab them by the prose-y."
It's only because the high-mindedness of his lexical flourishes are lost on the uneducated masses.
Just wait until the Hat and Hair kids' cartoon is approved.
And we only ever see Trump and Melania's feet, like in Muppet Babies.
Do they talk like Charlie Brown's parents, too? Wah wah, wah wah wah wah.
I was thinking about stringing together speech clips, like an automated phone system.
More like Cow and Chicken would be my guess.
Hey!
*flinches instinctively*
Don't they know Jefferson was a Democrat? Or as he called himself, a Republican.
"For many of us, the inclusion of Jefferson quotations in these e-mails undermines the message of unity, equality and civility that you are attempting to convey," read the letter.
Get back to me when you have proven yourselves the equal of Jefferson.
Which is true, if hostile means whatever she wants it to mean when she says it. As Orwell pointed out, the real battle is for the language, and with it, the very ability to think at all.
Such statements will no longer be audacious at all, once speech (itself being merely the evidence of thought) equates to violence, and nobody looks sideways.
I'm with you. I've been trying to make this point around my circle of friends and family. It's tough getting the wife and kids to understand that the way they speak is an indicator of the way they think.
I'm going to disagree with this. Orwell is wrong that language controls thought. You couldn't have thousands of different languages if this was the case.
I do not see how that follows. It would be possible, though unrealistic, for each individual to have his own internal language; there's nothing but time, and the utility of shared language, to prevent it.
Is, is that fur I see Jefferson wearing in the pic?
THAT DOES IT!
they are exactly the persons who are to succeed to the government of our country, and to rule its future enmities, its friendships and fortunes
Oh, no. I don't like the sound of that.
Just explain to these leftists that Thomas Jefferson was the Roman Polanski of his day. That should quiet them.
Romans, what do they have to do with it?
Or that Team Blue is "the Party of Jefferson". Watch heads explode.
Or the Bill Clinton of his day.
quoting Jefferson could create a "hostile environment."
"All men are created equal? That's crazy."
"All Top men are created equal? That's crazy."
FTFY
In rereading the Chernow Alexander Hamilton biography I was reminded however of what a dick Jefferson was politically.
Of course, by the end of the biography I felt the same thing about Hamilton and Adams and Monroe.....
Okaaaaay...so lets just do away with any references to historic figures, no matter how important, including but not limited to pictures, statues, writings, etc. And, while we are at it, lets ban any speech whatsoever among students, a 100% vow of silence if you will. That should solve the problem. Personally, I think we should just get rid of college all together since a bachelor's degree is practically worthless by itself. You need a masters' or certificate to get anywhere today.
Let's just separate the different schools of the university so that the majors that actually produce value aren't dragged under by the grievance studies majors. There are plenty of BS degrees that are still quite valuable.
Most large schools, including UVa, already do this (school of engineering, school of education, school of business, etc.) but they are all still in the same campus. Maybe they should just merge all the grievance studies programs with the childcare center.
That would be child abuse
Between the vows of silence and obedience required to prevent dissenting thoughts from being voiced, the vow of chastity being required to prevent Title IX violations, and the vow of poverty required due to the sky-high tuition, colleges are turning into monasteries - and not the cool ones where Ra's-al-Gul teaches you to be a ninja master, but the ones with the hair shirts and self flagellation.
You don't self flagellate with your hair shirt?
Monasteries don't want to take on people with large student debt. It's called the vocation killer.
for example
Quoting Jefferson complimenting UVA students actually offended them?
Given that any students or faculty who would sign this letter were not worthy of being complimented, such compliments would have to be lies, and therefore a violation of the honor code. I can see why they'd be upset.
Unless an individual was a 100% goodthinker by contemporary progressive standards, he should be unpersoned.
I move that we just abolish UVA, which is so obviously tainted by Jefferson's despicable legacy of owning slaves.
It's really the shittiest part of Charlottesville, anyway.
Well, considering that Virginia is starting to look more and more like Maryland, maybe it will be moved there.
The Rte. 29 corridor is way worse. At least parts of the Academical Village are aesthetically pleasing.
Don't remind me. I watched the degradation from 1985 until 1994 first hand.
Thomas Jefferson: founded the United States
After fact-checking the truthiness of this statement, Dissifact gives it a rating of 2.5 fruit sushis.
"problematic" in this case would seem to mean "challenges my world view" or "undermines my agenda"
If they don't want to quote anyone who had misdeeds then simply don't quote anyone ever. No human is without their sins.
Your sin against proper grammar has been noted in the Record.
Sorry. Public school education. 🙂
"By all means, UVA should grapple with Jefferson's mixed legacy."
Grapple?
What the fuck is there to grapple with?
It is not like we are trying to determine if a Woody Allen marathon is appropriate given his potential predation on preteen girls or examining the legacy of Bill Cosby where the (alleged) crimes of each violated the moral codes of the era in which they lived.
Jefferson was at the bleeding edge of human thought with respect to the treatment of minorities in the time in which he lived. Any sane assessment of him and his record would show absolutely nothing problematic at all. The rest is just acknowledging that Jefferson like every other human who has ever lived was a product of his times and simply cannot be held to a moral standard which wasn't even invented until 2 centuries after he died
Look, he was a cis white male shitlord who needs to be purged from the annals of history. I can't even!
So I guess we're going to have a blanket prohibition on any quotations from Greeks or Romans, for starters.
You don't grapple your Jefferson?
No but when she is a good girl I'll let my wife grapple with my Johnson
In the first draft of the Declaration, which he wrote alone, blamed
slavery in the colonies on King George III. Following that logic
through, slavery could have been abolished at the start of the
USA. Sadly the southern states would not go along and that
sentence was removed, but I have always found it highly
significant.
100 comments, and none of my fellow Hoos here have corrected Robby? UVA does not have a campus. It has Grounds. Fuckers.
"Grounds" is racist, you racist.
Good article, Robbo. Glad to see your back on the college beat. How many Reason contributors have safety pins on today?
(I know I am going to regret asking this but...)
Why on Earth did these 500 people enroll or accept positions at the University of Virginia, of all places, if they found Thomas Jefferson to be not merely offensive, but a source of hostility?
The false consciousness they had when they entered the University?
Why on Earth did these 500 people enroll or accept positions at the University of Virginia, of all places, if they found Thomas Jefferson to be not merely offensive, but a source of hostility?
Good point and now is the time to strike. Fire the lot of them and press charges for defamation. If you were treated in a hostile manner, present the evidence that you were and that UVA is responsible. If you can, here's your severance/compensation, we're sorry this happened, we wish you better luck elsewhere. If you can't, GTFO and take your shitty pity party with you, here's the bill for your damages.
RE: Profs, Students Want UVA President to Stop Quoting Jefferson: It Creates a Hostile Environment
Thomas Jefferson: founded the United States, and also owned slaves. Both things are true. Sorry.
You can cut the hypocrisy of the professors and students at UVA with a knife.
If they don't like the idea of someone quoting Jefferson, why do the work for or attend the university he founded?
Do they know what else Jefferson founded?
Hitler?
Snark first. If they ban Jefferson quotes, the fundraising materials I receive from the school will just be blank pieces of paper, and just about every inscription on grounds will have to be sand-blasted.
That having been said, and not having partaken of the Cult of Jefferson in my undergraduate time, I am bemused to see that the pendulum has swung so far (though likely only a whiny minority). At this rate, our students and educators are going to run out of anyone to quote or cite, as they are all deemed "unpersons" or "inappropriate." Romans or Greeks? Slavers and conquerors and not nice to women. The Bible? same same. It almost appears that their is a desire for "unhistory" where everything before is bad, but the dawning of the millennial generation will clean it up... right after mom and dad finish paying for school.

The insults to Mr. Jefferson's character are simply a vast Federalist conspiracy.
Don't you fret none.
Those damned Federalists will get theirs soon enough.
Just you wait.
Yee-haw!
Also, Thomas Jefferson invented the swivel chair.
SO FUCK YOU!
It's always amused me how, in my experience, those who voice the loudest indignation about antebellum chattel slavery almost always turn out to be the biggest liberty-phobic coercion junkies.
"The point is that the move that says, he owned slaves, but he was a great man, is deeply problematic, and I think it will continue to prevent us from being the kind of inclusive, respectful community that President Sullivan and the rest of us envision," another professor told The Cavalier Daily.
If you really believe that, what the fuck are you doing teaching or studying at a university founded by such a terrible, awful, person. If you have an iota of integrity, you have a moral duty to tender your resignation of withdrawal from the university. I don't want to hear any of your sniveling about job prospects or getting in somewhere else. If that's your excuse, you're no better than Jefferson excusing his slaveholdings in the name of maintaining his extravagant lifestyle.
My cousin is a professor at UVA. This shit drives her as batshit crazy as it does the rest of us. Moreso, even since she's exposed to it on a daily basis.
46 million in slavery in Middle East, India and Africa but racist morons at the UN and in the US continue to attack the USA - they dont give a sh it about the 46 million!!

Presumably, Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech also undermines "the message of unity, equality and civility" for quoting Jefferson.
I am a 3rd year at UVA and would like to let everyone know that we do NOT all think like that! Most of our departments are very liberty minded relative to other schools across the country. There is only a small pocket of students who welcome and embrace the victimhood culture we've seen infect other esteemed educational institutions. Very few actively try to silence what they deem "politically incorrect" speech here at UVA. Instead, both students and faculty engage in cordial, thoughtful debate when they disagree on an issue. In fact, what many people don't know is that there was actually a second petition, started hours after the first went public, condemning any efforts to defame Jefferson. This petition secured over 2000 signatures in the first few hours of going live. Compare that with the pathetic 500 pulled together over several weeks by the anti-Jefferson camp, and you can see where the student body and faculty at large stand on this issue. We realize he's a flawed hero, but this does not mean we can't support his ideas on principle or his underlying philosophy of freedom and liberty.
Thankfully, UVA seems to have weathered the "social justice warrior" storm thus far, and I don't see that changing any time soon. We were founded upon Jeffersonian principles of liberty, so there will ALWAYS be a strong coalition of activists ready to defend and uphold his ideals at Mr. Jefferson's university.
I graduated from a public university that operates mostly via the internet and has very minimal (maybe non-existent?) entrance requirements. They had accelerated session-based classes that allowed you to knock out a couple of semesters in a semester. Anyway, no prestige, no sports, and even the lowliest cow-college alumni look down their snouts at it, but never once did I have to put up with any professors spouting crazy political rants or personal soapbox agendas. Straight STEM. None of my more conventional peers seem to have learned anything more than I did at their schools. Currently, I think the Udacity nanodegree and Georgia Tech online MSCS are good examples of the direction things should go. What read and hear about traditional academia nowadays sounds like something to do with the Khmer Rouge.
