Anyway, a lot of kids never signed up for any events, so they basically spent the day hanging out and enjoying time out of class. So, for most kids it was a day off, albeit at school.

As I said, one year, for whatever reason (making up a snow day?) the field day was canceled. So, the students organized a walk-out and refused to go to class at the beginning of the day. The principal threatened every student who wasn't in class in, like, 10 minutes with suspension. That did the trick - only about two dozen kids stayed out. They got the front page treatment in the local paper. It wasn't like they were protesting any great injustice - they just wanted a day off school.
