Johan Norberg wrote his excellent new book Progress for three reasons. First, because something important happened. Second, because no one believes it. And third, because it's dangerous that they don't believe it. Global life expectancy has soared; abject poverty rates have dramatically declined; pollution is abating; and violence rates are down. Yet, most people erroneously believe that the world is going to hell. Norberg argues that this incredibly dangerous. "Fear is the health of the state," he asserts. Such mistaken beliefs actually undermine support for the institutions of liberty that make progress possible.
