I don't know about Reason's take, but, simply put, any individual or group can make some sort of new technology. The difference is that when a government does it it does so generally without consideration towards profit, where private parties tend to have at least some notion of marketing the resulting creation.

Governments take money out of the economy and spend it on things people might not actually want, committing two sins; wasting the money on crap and preventing it from being used for something people actually want. Private parties have to make money through free trade to survive, so they are heavily incentivized to make things or do things people want to pay for.

Sometimes governments create technology that is useful and desired, but believing that that proves that governments are good at, say, building rockets, is falling victim to the "is-ought" fallacy.

There's a new ? and unnervingly popular ? hard-left movement among disgruntled, "orthodox" Catholic Millennials who resent having to leave school and look for a job. That movement now has a manifesto. It calls itself "Tradinista," mashing together (as if they were remotely compatible) "traditional" Catholicism with Sandinista economics and politics. You'll see this new movement recommended in the once-free market First Things magazine, earnestly discussed by Ross Douthat of the New York Times, and tweeted about incessantly by 20-somethings from the depths of their parents' basements.

Judge Declares Payday Lender Owes Feds $1.2billion: Defrauded Customers

A federal judge in Nevada said professional racecar driver Scott Tucker and several of his companies owe $1.27 billion to the Federal Trade Commission after systematically deceiving payday lending customers about the cost of their loans.

In a decision late on Friday, Chief Judge Gloria Navarro of the federal court in Las Vegas, Nevada said Tucker was "specifically aware" that customers often did not understand the terms of their loans, and was at least "recklessly indifferent" toward how those loans were marketed.

I don't really know anything about the case; i do recall Reason has in the past written about defending payday lending and other "high-risk"/"high-fee financial services" fo' the po'-folk. That while the rates are absurdly high, the amounts are small, and enables a great deal of flexibility for people living check-to-check, etc. I don't know if there's a particular libertarian angle, other than so long as its not fraud, there's nothing inherently wrong w/ it.

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) ? Authorities say a 13-year-old girl in Virginia and a 14-year-old boy in Houston have been charged with crimes related to recent reports of scary clowns appearing in several states.

Hampton, Virginia, police said in a news release Monday that the girl asked a person posing as a clown on social media to kill one of her teachers.

The girl has been charged with one count of threatening to kill by electronic message.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office in Houston says the boy used the image of a clown to threaten a school. He is charged with making a terroristic threat.
