Brickbat: That's Not Fair
Artist Timothy J. Desmond has sued California officials after they barred him from displaying at the Fresno Fair a painting of a Civil War battle. In the painting, one soldier was depicted carrying a Confederate battle flag. State officials and the fair director pointed to a California law banning images of the flag from being displayed or sold on state property unless it appears in a book or digital medium or is part of a historical or artistic display at a museum.

Morning, So,California is going down the same road as Germany did with NAZI symbols? Seeing that the painting would fall under the 1st amendment, I’d say this law is unconstitutional .BTW,great game last night.
Mornin’. Try hanging that depiction of an actual historical event in a theatre afire. It’s combustible so it will only add to the death count. There you go, circle is squared.
But,can you do a rebel yell in a theater?
Only in the midnight hour showing.
But don’t whistle Dixie during the movie.
You can also dance by yourself.
That’s what I do whenever I attend a white wedding.
I always like to go ‘dancing in the street’ after a few beers

I don’t see an app. Just a woman ranting and asking for money.
Looks like she’s trying to win the ghetto lottery without even knowing any of the “victims”.
RACIST!
It never happened (The Civil War). Now move along, nothing to see here.

Of course it happened! Everyone knows the brave Democrats fought to free the salves against the racist Republicans!
Slaves brought here by Trump’s great great grandfather.
The south shall appeal again!

My neck of the woods went full SJW on the rebel flag after the church shooting. The grief and horror were easy for SJWtards to exploit. Most of the natives responded with loud indifference.
The SJW obsession with policing and punishing Badthink and Badspeak is truly intolerable. Give them state power and free speech will be over. It’ll be “free speech” with “reasonable” and “common sense” exceptions.
Yep. She is a no-shit, full on, jack-booted fascist.
Lets see if I have this right: We know what Cankles will do – censor the press, confiscate guns, dictate prices to the private sector, prosecute badthinkers, raise taxes to historic highs…but Donald Trump? He is unpredictable, so vote Cankles.
But. He wants to enforce immigration law as it’s written, not in an arbitrary and selective manner. And because of this, he’s pure evil.
Unsurprisingly you can drive around my parish and see any number of stars and bars on cars or flying in yards. Unfortunately most of the people displaying them have no idea about the actual history of the flag. The majority of them fly the flag as a public way of saying ‘fuck you’, and I am ok with that.
This nation was founded on “fuck you”.
King George: We are imposing a minor tariff on your tea.
Colonists: Fuck you.
Nice!
“America: Founded on ‘Fuck You'”
*standing ovation”
Fuck the official motto, that’s the unofficial one.
The “stars and bars” was the Confederacy’s civil government flag, not the battle flag.
The worst was a S.C. newspaper reference the US Flag as the “Stars and Bars” in an article about that high school banning the flag from games.
California did not make burning an American flag illegal, so its all good.
Everybody knows that banning speech is ok, as long as it is bad speech. Everybody knows and agrees what is bad speech and what is good speech, so there is no issue here. The racist flag is bad, and if we ban any mention or depiction of it outside specific circumstances, the world becomes a safer space.
History only goes back one year now. It’s all a conspiracy of textbook publishers.
I have to buy a textbook to study for professional certification. The newest edition is two years newer than the previous one, costs hundreds of dollars, and the publisher will not provide an update history.
I hate, hate, hate the textbook circus.
They changed the font.
All the historical figures were crisis actors anyway.
How about that Humans of New York?
Ten Facts About California in The Civil War, from the Civil War Trust
In the painting, one soldier was depicted carrying a Confederate battle flag.
Um, no. He was depicted carrying the Second Official Flag of the CSA. There’s no battle flag present in that painting.
Hence the lawsuit?
The third flag was created when they realized the second flag looked too much like a white flag of truce.
The battle being portrayed in the siege of Atlanta, which didn’t go particularly well for the Confederates.
So you can’t even show a battle they *lost,* because it still involves showing their flag.
I hope none of the German units on D-Day had Nazi insignia, or we couldn’t portray that, either.
There aren’t many Germans driving around with the Nazi flag flying in the back of their pickup trucks.
That said, people who display the confederate battle flag in a positive manner are assholes and should be (noncoercively) shunned from polite society. Don’t give me the bullshit about it being a symbol of Southern heritage and having nothing to do with racism…. it did not exist until 1861, when it was created as a symbol of the fight to keep an entire race in slavery. Hell, even the swastika existed long before the Third Reich adopted it.
You know what that widely respected lion of the South, Robert E Lee, did once he carried that flag into Pennsylvania? Rounded up the local free black citizens and shipped them south under escort to be sold into slavery. He was about to head into battle with a huge Northern army and he cared more about selling blacks into slavery than using the escort in the actual battle. So yeah, tell me honoring the flag and honoring that douchebag slaver with street and city names isn’t racist.
Your side lost. Thank God. Deal with it.
And I misspelled Lynyrd…
