Black Students at California State Wanted Segregated Housing. They Got It.
Do such arrangements detract from the educational mission of university?

California State University at Los Angeles is now offering racially-segregated housing options for black students on campus—a fulfillment of the demands of said students.
Race-specific housing is a common request of activist students at various campuses—and many universities have been happy to satisfy it. Earlier this week, I reported that joking about the dead gorilla Harambe was considered a microaggression at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst: that's because UMass-Amherst has a specific residential community for African students (it's also called Harambe, hence the problem).
So Cal State offering housing for black students is nothing new. A university spokesperson told The College Fix that its Halisi Scholars Black Living-Learning Community "focuses on academic excellence and learning experiences that are inclusive and non-discriminatory."
Black students wanted blacks-only housing in order to "congregate, connect, and learn from each other." Of course, they probably have a lot to learn from students of other races, too. And students of other races should want to learn from them. That's the point of college: throwing together people from different backgrounds in hopes that they will become better informed about other traditions. This experience is sometimes uncomfortable, and it doesn't always work out, but it's the foundation upon which college life is based: the idea that we have something to learn from people who are different.
The current trend in higher education is to give every racial group and social class its own specific safe space in order to avoid discomfort. We ought to worry whether such arrangements also detract from the educational mission of the university.
I also can't help but wonder what the radical forebears of today's liberal college students—who fought to end segregation in schools—would think about all this.

This is good racism, it's different than bad racism.
It's inclusive and non-discriminatory! No one is discriminated against!
...SJWtards don't even try to understand the meanings of the words they use.
Also, the proggie SJWtard obsession with skin color is just fucking creepy at this point. Their definition of a person is literally skin deep.

Nice to see the Democrats embracing their heritage again.
This is hard to parody.
I was going to say something snarky about "why should black students have to wait in line behind the white students at water fountains," but for all I know they have their own fountains already.
No, it shouldn't. Clearly they need to learn to keep themselves in their place.
Because isn't that what they want? They just proved it, didn't they?
California State University at Los Angeles is now offering racially-segregated housing options for black students on campus?a fulfillment of the demands of said students.
So let me see how this works.
People are forced to wear a star of david or segregated to different entrances or lunch counters. Wars are fought to eliminate such things, then the final solution is for the children of the people who suffered the indignities to demand them back?
More like their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
It's Commiefornia. The Sheldon Richman of states.
nice.....
Wars are fought to eliminate forced segregation and other indignities. The situation at CA-LA is allowing freedom of association - not such a bad thing. The problem I have with it is that other groups on campus aren't afforded the same respect.
I've often wondered if there's just no real good solution for people who are a minority, and are obviously visually distinct from the broader demographics and so can't "hide" like gay folks used to have to do (and I suppose like some of them still feel the need to do).
I mean, black folks are never going to be a majority in this country. And given their understandable wariness due to the heinous way they were treated for centuries, will they ever really feel like they "fit in" here?
They should do an AMA with just a random black dude who can answer these questions.
I say we randomly pick Kmele Foster to answer these questions.
Asians have done pretty well for themselves in that regard, and they also visually don't fit in.
Yes, but they were also never enslaved and treated like absolute shit the way black people were for a long, long time.
Also, white men lust after their sideways vaginas, so they get treated better.
Wait do Asian men have sideways vaginas too? or just eyeballs where their butt holes should be?
No stupid. But you can tell if they're Chinese or Japanese based on whether the eyes slant upwards towards the outside corners, or downwards.
So you're skipping the history of the Chinese laborers imported to build the frontier railroads and run laundries, or the Japanese forced into internment camps during WWII?
FDR signed that executive order. It was for their own good.
FDR, A DEMOCRAT, signed that executive order. It was for their own good.
FTFY
No, I'm saying those instances do not equate to 400 years of forced illiteracy and slavery.
I mean, are you seriously wanting to compare the internment camps with the entire history of black chattel slavery in the New World? Are you high?
400 years? Try doing the math on that.
Obviously slavery is now in their genes so what happenned hundreds of years ago matters.
Not being willing to get over shit that happened hundreds of years ago is a great way to end up like fricken Yugoslavia.
So what about the literally thousands of years of people enslaving outsiders before that. Slavery was the norm, the only difference appears to be who was in the chair when everyone decided to make it not so.
+1 Manzanar
+2 Chinese Exclusion Acts
Asian women are a great fit.
Do we have to think about the context of slavery with every black person in the US we come across? I think most people are capable of not doing that, just like most white people don't equate themselves with slave owners.
Shitty things happened to my ancestors too and I wouldn't want to be reminded of it constantly
More African slaves went to Brazil than the US and hey don't seem to be having these "problems".
"More African slaves went to Brazil than the US and hey don't seem to be having these "problems"."
Isn't it worse in Brazil? Seems like that's the future of the US.
When they drag the US down to third world shithole status, then we can make a direct comparison.
Gojira, if racism was the only thing holding back black people in education, then we should expect similar results for black people of all backgrounds. Instead Nigerians are the most highly educated groups in the U.S. 37% have Bachelors, 17% have masters, and 4% have doctorates, compared to 19% of white Americans have bachelor's degrees, 8% have master's degrees and only 1% percent have doctorates.
So either universities are discriminating against white people in favor of Nigerians, or maybe there are multiple factors involving culture and background that no college can fix no matter how well meaning.
They have to be in order to come up with all those internet scams the rich white folk fall for.
Do such arrangements detract from the educational mission of university?
Not at all. Why wouldn't living in segregated housing be just as much of an educational experience, albeit a different one, than living in integrated housing? Its a different experience, and so it might be even more educational.
You can always learn something by watching someone else - even if often its what not to do.
As long as those experiences are equal, its ok for them to be separate.
Wow, never saw this coming.

Go comb your hair Fruit Sushi. Have you learned nothing from H&R Marine Todd? The point of college is to get a STEM degree and get drunk and crush pussy like so many grapes so you can make fun of the progfags who gets Proggie Arts degrees in Social(ist) Justice so they can pay back their loans by working at Starbucks.
I didn't see that the first time. It made me cry with happiness.
How do you know those STEM undergrads who did this to you were really crushing all that puss? Did they tell you this? I find that boasts of pussy crushing are usually just boasts and nothing more.
Wait, STEM undergrads are crushing puss now? I thought that was a perk reserved for college athletes and MBAs. Ok, I can buy maybe civil engineers, but they don't really count as STEM -- at least MBAs have to pretend to understand statistics so they get their black belts in Six Sigma.
Othering target builders is not nice.
Because when I think of crushing pussy, one automatically thinks of the STEM nerds.
Can't we all just get along?
Yes, separately but equally apparently.
I assume the white students that want to be segregated will still be considered racists?
Abso fucking lutely.
But if the white students get all the students of other races to segregate themselves...
Im sure one day all this social justice movement wilk fall out of favor, and then sjw's will be cast as conspiratorial white male supremacists. The funny thing is that it's not to far from the truth.
Blacks can't be racists, Robby. You know this.
Back of the sushi line for you.
Of course, they probably have a lot to learn from students of other races, too.
Don't be absurd. They're at college to *teach* other students. Learning's got nothing to do with it.
Exactly, then they can go home and be the exact same person they were before they came to college to teach.
Only, you know, sixty grand in debt, but that's okay, they don't plan on paying it back.
I remember when George Wallace supporters in Alabama would argue that the Negroes wanted to be segregated just as much as whites.
But what the heck? Maybe apartheid is an appropriate policy for state college dormitories.
Isn't segregation by government, like, illegal n' shit? I smell litigation...
yep, especially when it comes time for building upgrades/furniture renovations. Now every time you replace a couch in one of the lounges in a black dorm, the white dorm needs one too and vice versa.
Separate but equal was outlawed like a zillion white-man years ago, like.
It's illegal if it any way benefits whites. We may quibble about the text of the applicable laws, but the real legal test is always the same; whitey=bad.
I love how institutional racism in the end always boils down to white=evil.
There's a word for judging people solely by their skin color, hmmm can't seem to remember it...
So, here's a question: how do these segregated dorms not violate the federal Fair Housing Act?
Easy. Straight, white males are not members of any protected class.
Well, maybe if they're cops.
They don't.
*double negative implied*
Glad somebody got to it before I did. This was my first thought, as well.
"That's the point of college: throwing together people from different backgrounds in hopes that they will become better informed about other traditions."
That's the point? Something you can already do more effectively without paying a cent in tuition?
It's Robbie. He repeats this conventional wisdom early and often in his articles about racialists on campus. If Robbie were a high school teacher, he'd tell his students that they can be anything they want when they grow up and they should all go to college.
I don't even know if that's conventional wisdom, seems like it's a modern university talking point because of the increasing diminishing returns.
By this reasoning are religious or all-male schools no longer colleges?
This. A thousand times this.
This. A thousand times this.
Well, at least twice.
'Sheriff Bart sighs, hangs head and rides off into the sunset'.
Where are the white women?
Not in your dorm...
At the six sigma house, waiting for the guys with the black "belts"
Actually, there were demands for racially segregated housing and spaces for Black students back in the late 60s and early 70s, and at a few left-leaning schools, they were accommodated. This idea has probably been rewarmed by Boomer academics who were promoting it back then.
"Harambe was considered a microaggression at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst: that's because UMass-Amherst has a specific residential community for African students (it's also called Harambe, hence the problem)."
It's called "Harambee"
It's pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove.
Haram Bee? Is that like a Muslim anti-bee movement?
Probably. Robbie has just gotten the name wrong here and the original article.
"Black Living-Learning Community "focuses on academic excellence and learning experiences that are inclusive and non-discriminatory."
Just call it what it is. That's like a "gender-neutral" bathroom that only allows women. Which exists apparently.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CrfGkqzUMAAxsE7.jpg
Holy fuck. That's some hardcore cognitive dissonance right there.
Where is the footnote that goes with the asterisk? Is it invisible to everyone but the gender-enlightened?
Maybe an asterisk gets around the near-certain headache of leaving anyone important out.

Wow. Literally beyond parody.
Does this mean we get a second Mulatto's Myopic Misanthropy edition today?
Let me bait the hook. "Excuse me, it is well settled that Cultural Marxism in college is a libertarian non-issue."
When a white kid goes to da black dorms, does he get a Nigger Warning?
Well, the cafeterias at the other dorms just got a lot quieter.
/ducks
Those race traitors in the south in the 1950s and 1960s -- sitting in at lunch counters, escorted into school by national guards -- they should bow down and apologize to Bull Connors and George Wallace for their macro aggressions!
If there are precisely zero differences between racial groups, then what could I possibly learn from a black student that I couldn't learn from a white student or an Asian student? Wait a second, why am I learning anything from students?
Niggers being niggers?
/ducks.
They're being niggardly with their accommodations.
This does not go far enough. Black students still have to interact with students and professors of other races. They need to segregate the entire university.
That's called Howard University.
Yeah, no. The point of college is career training. All the other stuff is a nice side benefit and can be gotten by joining the military, moving across the country, or taking a summer off backpacking through Europe.
Hell, join the Peace Corps.
The point of college is getting that piece of paper that says you went to college. Training takes place after you get a job.
Welcome to post-racial America.
Well done, Obumble voters. Bravo.
Robby, of course I agree that segregated dorms are narrow minded.
But as for this "students wanting to learn from other cultures", Robby, come on. That's like the 1% of the college campus.
I'm Asian, and I spent close to 7 years of my life on college. At no point did some black or white dude come to me and say "I want to learn..... from YOU!" And I didn't go to any Kwaanza or lunar new year celebration held by some Asian student group I didn't care about. By the third year me and my Asian roommates (Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese) made our own living arrangement because surprise, Asians like hanging around with Asians. We eat food that smells funky and joke about Asian things that will confuse the heck out of white kids. The same thing could be said about these black kids.
The biggest lie in America is that kids in college want to learn about other cultures. In reality, the first two years are tax funded education vacation away from mom and dad. They drink, eat, play a lot video games, do online shopping, chat / text with their friends, etc. You would think incoming freshmen were entering a monastery or something.
I had a black roommate in college. He hated me. His friends, not so much. It would really piss him off when his black friends would come over to visit and spend the whole time laughing, joking and drinking beer with me. I don't remember any racial animus, I think he just didn't like me personally.
The only racial tension we had on campus was between the middle eastern students and everyone else. It was a real culture clash. One night the black fraternity brothers and a bunch of crackers from my hall dragged some of the ME guys down to the showers and forced them to bath. That caused a stir.
Then there was the marine barracks in Lebanon. A bunch of ME guys were cheering about that and promptly had the shit beaten out of them.
I think I've finally found the setting for my screenplay for Soul Man II.
Now, now, you know perfectly well that protected 'minorities' are ALLOWED to segregate themselves. Look at the number of Womens' colleges, such as Smith. While no Men Only colleges can be tolerated!
Look, the Progressive/Left has ALWAYS been racist.
I have been on the Cal State LA campus a few times. It's very near my primary residence. This might help put some context on the matter:
http://www.csumentor.edu/campu.....eles5.html
They know what's really important don't they. MLK Jr. face palming right now.
Don't gloss over the 3:2 women to men ratio either. The racial demographics are astounding, but I think that Cal State LA is a bit of an outlier on that. The gender demographics are about average though.
Primary residence???? Well aren't you fancy!
I did hesitate before writing. I cannot afford even one residency in Playa del Rey or Manhattan beach. I have a little place in Oxnard.
I would have gone with my secondary residence is his mom's house.
This is TRUE! When my mom died I sold her sold home and used the proceeds buy this little place.
I really miss that home.
"I have a little place in Oxnard."
Is it still on wheels?
My understanding of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka is that the Supreme Court didn't say that "separate but equal" racial segregation was categorically unconstitutional, but rather was unconstitutional only because the latest & greatest social science studies of the time showed it to be harmful. That means Brown is a house built on sand, and all it would take now for racial segregation to be A-OK and 100% consistent with Brown would be to gin up a showing that the studies from 1954 are now outdated and that the latest and greatest studies as of 2016 show that segregation is desirable rather than harmful.
"Brown" was also written by the guy who tossed the Japs into camps for the duration; I've often thought that "Brown" was an attempt by Warren to pay off his karmic debt.
Hell, you could say that about his entire time on the court.

But not the Jews!

Kill Dem.
Kill Da White People.
I really don't care. If they want their own dorms, let them have them.
I get it: being black means that you look different than 85% of the people in this country, and that has effects. It comes with its own baggage.
I think the government makes it that much harder to deal with. If the cultural conversation was limited to art and TV and movies, you'd find most people, and white people, being willing to admit a lot of empathy.
However, since the topic practically always comes up with people pushing a political, regulatory agenda, no one wants to concede anything. It's a lot easier to admit that racism exists in this world when the topic of discussion isn't reparations or free houses.
Free association is ok with me. If they want it, and the schools cool with it, ok. Maybe one day we'll leave in a world where everyone's allowed to freely associate.
"I really don't care. If they want their own dorms, let them have them."
Me neither. If THEY pay for it.
Have we learned nothing from The Young Ones?
RACISTS!!!
That is all.
Never thought I'd see the day when African-American students would demand segregated housing. Or...as it was referred to back when we were marching against it: "Separate but Equal".
