Voters Terrified of Candidates, Explosion at SpaceX Testing, Hinckley Heading Home: P.M. Links

-
NASA/UPI/Newscom Today's "dog bites man" poll news: Voters are more scared of what the candidate they oppose might do as president than they are excited about the candidate they're supporting.
- An explosion on launch pad at a SpaceX testing in Florida destroyed a rocket and a satellite during a routine test. Nobody was injured.
- John Hinckley Jr., failed Ronald Reagan assassin, will leave the psychiatric hospital and start living at his mother's home in Williamsburg, Virginia, starting Sept. 10.
- The White House is complaining that the Obama administration is not getting enough credit for its transparency and .. HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! I'm sorry … I just couldn't finish this one.
- Pennsylvania regulators have reinstated an $11 million fine against Uber for operating within the state without approval.
- Apple CEO Tim Cook described the European Union's attempt to force Ireland to make Apple pay more in taxes as "total political crap." Unsurprisingly, leaders in German and France are supporting the EU. (guess where those taxes might go?)
- Dallas Police Chief David Brown is retiring.

Voters are more scared of what the candidate they oppose might do as president than they are excited about the candidate they're supporting.
Always vote against something.
Like voting against your main self-interest: freedom.
That's gone no matter what.
I wonder what it's like to be excited about a candidate?
When we were seniors in high school, a friend of mine ran for a seat on the district school board. I was excited to vote for him.
That was 14 years ago. Haven't had that good feeling since.
Ask SIV.
I don't think he meant "sexually excited," though i could be wrong.
A little from column A...
Last night a commenter said he thought SIV stood for "Single Issue Voter."
Maybe SIV's always been about sexual excitement as his Single Issue.
I guess some people might find Trump a hottie. He's certainly dated his share of supermodels.
It does stand for that. At the beginning of his time posting his handle was "Single Issue Voter" and he was pretty upfront that he would vote for anyone, anyone(!), who supported the legalization of cock-fighting.
I think he has evolved to the point where his handle is a lie.
Yeah, it was cock fighting.
Or granny panties.
Or granny panties
"The higher the waist, the better they taste."
If there is one thing that my 28 years of looking at pornography has taught me, it's that women crave a man with a gigantic tackle, which no doubt explains why Trump scores hot tail.
I remember being excited about Goldwater. He lost, though. Then there was Reagan. Got to win twice. Nothing much since.
Voters are more scared of what the candidate they oppose might do as president than they are excited about the candidate they're supporting.
I'm scared of the candidate I'm supporting. I'm also scared of the candidate people tell me to vote for to block the one I'm most afraid of.
I was excited about perot. Him and his charts and his giant sucking sound and crazy aunt in the attic. But I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.
Hello.
What's my home province of Quebec - a place obsessed with language to the point of being counter-productive - up to with its banana republic mentality?
"Le Devoir reports Dr. Amer Omar was suspended by the College of Physicians on July 1, after he spent the previous three years practicing under temporary work permits.
He's the only eye doctor in the province specializing in genetic retinal disease, and he won't be able to practice again until at least next month, when he gets another crack at the exam.
The 37-year-old doctor, originally from Egypt, has lived in Canada for the last 15 years, is married to a French Quebecer, and speaks fluent French. He has also spent the last year brushing up on his written French ? without success."
http://www.cjad.com/cjad-news-.....rench-test
THIS IS HOW YOU BUILD GREAT SOCIETIES. You allow an un-elected language watch dog to wield power over doctors SORELY needed.
Fucking losers.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, eh?
"You will speak our pidgin Brittany peasant French, or you will be forced to move somewhere more productive and successful...wait, where are you going?"
Sadly that is no longer Ontario.
Quebec speaks a Brittany-esque dialect? That seems weird. Brittany itself has an increasingly large Breton-speaking population and all the signs are in Breton and French.
Maybe that's where their Canadian cousins got the idea?
It's more like a weird Picard/Norman/Breton mix with a bunch of words that come from two hundred years of living next to the English and swear words based on Catholic iconography. It's certainly...unique.
It's 'joual' inspired. Or as the French call it, 'campagne' French.
Which makes the OLF all the more absurd because it's well-known French instruction in Quebec is poor.
But as long as they fuck those 'anglos' (les autres) it's all good.
Huh. That describes Brittany quite well, actually.
I retract my expression of surprise.
(However, Bretons, in my experience, are completely different than most of the rest of France - they actually are willing to put a day's work in and sometimes have to be reprimanded when traveling in the US because they naturally want to work longer than their laws will allow. I imagine fishermen are an exception to this.)
They are different. Certainly nothing like Parisians.
I always heard that we just kept the old pre-revolution french, the one spoken by the nobility, and just missed the french revolution. The french accent was a way to disassociate themselves with the old France.
The Hippocratic Oath doesn't allow people to say, "No, I'm not treating the PQ".
Meanwhile the pieces of shits politicians and connected journalists go out of province to see top notch doctors.
Le Journal de Montreal ran - shocking! - pieces about how Anglo (maudits anglais!) education institutions are superior to their French counterparts. In fact, all Anglo institutions including hospitals (to the extent we can claim they're any good) are far better (professionally and ethically) than the French ones. It's known to anyone outside the insular nationalist tribe. What's staggering about this is they talk as if it's all novel and that the Anglos are a quaint obscurity. Never do they ever say, 'hey, what can we learn from them?'
I've lost my patience. The insularity is just too much.
Time to move on to SpaceXI!
Is this like the 4th explosion for them? Let's hear it again about the genius of Elon Musk, human paladin.
Yeah! He failed to perfectly design an unmanned space ship that lands on a moving platform in the ocean! What a moron! My spaceship already brought me back 72 loads of Unobtanium from Pluto!
Calm down, Mrs. Musk, your son is still a billionaire.
FTFY
Humans were already pretty good at blowing up rockets on the launchpad 70 years ago.
70 years ago they weren't using reusable rockets that fly themselves.
Well, this explosion shows that they aren't really using them now, either.
Two planes crashed into each other yesterday.
All planes are terrible failures.
This wasn't a previously used rocket.
The video is a bit odd. The explosion starts near the top of the rocket, maybe where the umbilicus attaches?
Pretty much exactly where you'd place a small charge to sabotage the Israeli payload.
Yeah, I'm going to keep playing the conspiracy theory gambit. There's plenty of willing ears out there. If it spreads, I'm taking credit.
Blow up space ex-embarrass musk-electric cars are unreliable too-revert to old tech for cars-buy stock in coal companies---------
Presto coal powered cars and "they" are rich!
How's that for tin foil?
The White House is complaining that the Obama administration is not getting enough credit for its transparency and .. HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! I'm sorry ? I just couldn't finish this one.
Way to steal my joke, Shackman.
Second place...(grumbles to self, give FoE a phony congratulatory smile)
I don't require your accolades, only your obedience.
That is SO 1984-eqsue.
War is Peace.
Freedom is Slavery.
Ignorance is Strength.
...and Opacity is Transparency.
It's jaw dropping stuff indeed.
You know who/what else was so 1984?
Michael Jackson, world's #1 sex symbol?
Eddie Murphy?
Kenny Loggins?
Van Halen?
George Orwell?
11111000000?
My third birthday?
Citizen X we are the same age!

Pet Rocks?
This Is Spinal Tap!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bruce Springsteen?
Tanking for Mario Lemieux?
I know it's way past due date so forgive me but it's hard to reconnect with people but I saw your comment about Gretzky a couple of weeks back. I understand what your saying but the metric I was referring to were 'ideal points' which on an adjusted basis taking into account some of your assertions, he still comes out on top. The only difference is, his 212 points becomes 197. But the fact remains, and that was my point, even on an adjusted basis he owns 6 out of the top 10 scoring ideal points.
He was that dominant.
you were saying.
Berlin (the band)
Hitler.
It's just gots to be Hitler this time.
Er, I mean TRUMP.
The opacity of dopes?
I don't know what they are complaining about. They are getting exactly the credit they deserve for transparency.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown is retiring.
After boosting recruitment!
He is probably going into politics.
After his 15 minutes he was probably recruited by the local Republican Party.
It's a shame . People don't give thought to how important a County Sheriff is. They are the only law enforcement, the only government group with power and the right to enforce it, that answers directly to the citizens.
All other legally armed government forces answer to politicians.
:cough:Commissioners Court:cough:
/jus' sayin'
What is that ? I've never heard of it.
Do they carry guns ? Is it local to your state ?
/jus' askin
Seriously. We have County Commissioners but I am unaware of them having an enforcement arm other than the County Sheriff.
Now that I think about it there is the local County Constables. They have guns and are elected but have little or no power compared to a County Sheriff in Texas.
A County Sheriff can intervene between the Feds and the county residents in favor of the citizens if he chooses and he has the manpower to back it up, ( unless the Feds go steroid)
I get what you mean, and agree with it. That said, lots of sheriffs do answer to other, elected (and, sometimes non-elected) politicians. They certainly get their budgets from others, and are often told to get in line vis-a-vis their operating funds.
For Dallas, check this out. If you want some real fun, read up on good ol' John Wiley Price.
I really wish we had a setup in my neck of the woods that operated more like what you are eluding to. There's pretty much no way we'd get a sheriff like the one in the Bundy/Oregon thing. Not near Dallas (which is one of the big reasons I won't live in the county).
Um what? We rebelled against our asshat sheriff and replaced him with someone more amenable to our priorities.
We are well aware of the importance of Sheriffs in Texas.
BOOM
Our rockets always blow up.
Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom!
Ah, there it is 12 seconds later. The mic is 2.4 miles away from the launchpad.
...and start living at his mother's home in Williamsburg, Virginia, starting Sept. 10.
Can being a H&R regular be far behind?
I'll be on the look out for a commenter with handle name Irish Loves Jodie.
One can only hope.
John Hinckley Jr., failed Ronald Reagan assassin, will leave the psychiatric hospital and start living at his mother's home in Williamsburg, Virginia, starting Sept. 10.
Hey Lee Genes, you gonna invite him over for beers?
John Hinckley Jr. free once more.
Looking at the presidential candidates, this is good.
He may be the hero we need.
Oh, oh.
You 'bout to get a letter from Preet, son.
That could be a Preet sting operation.
"Ms. Foster, for the good of the American people, we need you to tell Hinckley you'll go on a date with him if the two candidates are...deposed of. No, you don't actually have to do it."
I do not think Hinckley has the authority to overthrow a presidential candidate.
I don't think he can depose them, either. Does he even have a law license?
Yes...'overthrow' them...in a political sense...preferably in a way that will ensure that they are unable to run again...
*wink wink, taps nose*
Couldn't you guys just invade and burn down Washington again?
That was compreetry inappwopwiate.
I'd much rather have a beer with him than any of our last half-dozen presidents or either of the two current candidates.
Unlike the rest of them, he's had treatment, or at least psychiatric attention.
Shirley you can't be serious
Invite Jodie Foster too.
I'd come if she was there.

Apple CEO Tim Cook described the European Union's attempt to force Ireland to make Apple pay more in taxes as "total political crap." Unsurprisingly, leaders in German and France are supporting the EU. (guess where those taxes might go?)
The "parasitic and voracious intermediary" as Bastiat called it is asking for more to leach.
I think you meant "leech".
Considering what it will be spent on, "leach" works as well.
No Mo HoJo Yo
I had no idea they served food.
The claim that Californians are out of touch with 'Real America' used to be considered 'an exaggeration'.
no longer.
The closing will leave only one Howard Johnson restaurant, in Lake George, New York.
Weird, I have family there.
Wait, that's a lie. I think family lives nearby, but I was going to Lake George on my Bunyan hunt, but my competitor got there first.
And I've been to that one...well, we went to Wendy's or McDonald's and sat on their outdoor tables. It was so long ago I can't remember the details BUT we've seen it. Had I known it would be the last I would have taken pictures.
For most of my life I had no idea they slept people (the ones in my area were restaurants only).
+1 Hangover Pancakes
The company that brought me down to Buenos Aires a few months ago put me up in the downtown Howard Johnson's hotel. It was actually a pretty nice place, comparable to most of the other business hotels I stayed at in Argentina.
They only had one flavor of ice cream, though -- I said to them "just like you did in Blazing Saddles, right?" They had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. But perhaps it would have helped if I'd said it in Spanish.
You're my kind of humor C.
I say shit like that all the time on purpose.
It's especially bad with my staff. My sister is always telling me to knock it off.
Now that's an abstract euphemism!
I wonder if the last few owners have to pay franchise fees ? Can you imagine being the last of a franchise that has slowly died off and still having to pay franchise fees for marketing and product development and such ?
I worked a HoJo's in Buffalo decades ago. Good riddance.
That sounds like a girl I knew.
John Hinckley Jr., failed Ronald Reagan assassin, will leave the psychiatric hospital and start living at his mother's home in Williamsburg, Virginia, starting Sept. 10.
Failure to launch (a shoulder-fired missile).
Starring Mathew McConnaughey, but as his Rust Cohle persona this time.
Pennsylvania regulators have reinstated an $11 million fine against Uber for operating within the state without approval.
Where did the Commonwealth fall on that freedom index thing again?
Does the scale go into negative numbers?
-11
-1 drummer
26th -- aaaaand 11th for occupational licensing.
I think that index has serious problems in the methodology.
I mean, the whole needing approval thing might be anti-freedom. But I really don't understand why a company like Uber should be exempt from rules that apply to everybody else.
Because they're different than everybody else?
How?
Uber is essentially a sophisticated and highly specialized information broker. All of their operations are protected by the First Amendment.
Of course voters hate the "other", and both sides do it.
There are people in these very comments who will bitch about how Hillary voters would vote for her no matter what, she could kill a puppy on live tv blah blah blah, and then, without a hint of irony, declare that even though they find Trump wrong on many issues, they have to vote for him, in order to stop the hated Other.
And I'm sure you'll see such things repeated in the comments section of left-wing sites.
This deserves its own article, full of Shackleford mockery.
It will just be full of more SJW nonsense.
I'm sure they will list all alll the time the major press networks uncovered malfeasance. Like the the time a major news organization discovered a huge story.
Oh wait, no major news organization has discovered shit in the past 10 years. So why do we need all those Columbia journalism students?
Can I answer with an obscene joke?
Better not.
So why do we need all those Columbia journalism students?
Media Matters, MoveOn.Org and DailyKos all have early retirement plans?
Colin Kaepernick's Protest Strategy Amped Up: Not Just "Sitting On My Ass" Anymore
In strong display of the dept of his convictions, the QB shows he's willing to take stronger actions = like Wearing Socks.
(raises fist in solidarity)
This is why i refuse to wear white socks.
I'm starting to like him more and more.
Could Ghandi break a pass-rush? Not the last time i checked.
Can Kaepernick?
i thought that was his main asset, being able to juke and run
he set the NFL record for most rushing yards in a game. he broke the 49rs QB rushing record. he ran over 1000yds per season in college. etc.
He used to be able to run fast and well.
Now he is just a media-whore asshole.
It's not that I necessarily disagree with him, it's just that sitting during the national anthem doesn't actually accomplish anything and makes him come off as a petulant 15 year old.
Which is, you'll have to admit, awfully mature for a pro football player.
A petulant 15-yo with a hot BLM girlfriend telling him what to do and say.
You're assuming he's doing it because of the GF -- link?
Isn't she also a Muzzie, and has gotten him to convert?
HM delivers: Nessa Diab
Would. Multiple times
She looks like Amy Winehouse, only alive. Sort of alive.
Well spotted, a Winehouse look alike makes my junk hide.
An actual 15-yo would be *unable* to stand for the anthem.
Um ...
Do you deliver door-to-door?
Outcalls only.
Is that the palest black couple ever?
You know Colin, you might get the same result with a giant sign that says "PAY ATTENTION TO ME" taped to your back.
I'm still buzzing over Harrison - a TV personality and former player - didn't know he was bi-racial. I mean, the clueless ignorance is staggering.
I'm Canadian and knew this!
He doesn't have a Black name.
It does sound like he's part of a tribe of Irish elves.
STILL.
Top of the morning to you, racist. *swigs whiskey and takes bite out of a potato.
OH, so he's just been trolling us this whole time.
Black socks take .15 off of my 40 time, and they make my calves look huge.
And they never get dirty. The longer you wear them, the stronger they get.
Where does one get these socks?
He really, really needs to focus on getting his career back on track. Assuming he wants to.
I'm glad he's doing this - it's about time we had a conversation about racist police.
FINALLY, we're ready to talk about racism in this country. God bless Kaepernick.
Actually, the sock picture is old and is just surfacing now.
Sorry to burst the bubble.
Anyway it's time for Dirty Limerick Thursday.
I was very disappointed in the effort last week. Wake the fuck up, you goddamn fucking assholes.
This is to the tune of Hickory Dickory Dock. As always, I'll give the first line, and you finish the song.
"Hillary Dillary Dock..."
Bill can't contain his cock.
With spikes upon her cock...
Swallowed Gojira's cock...
There's no one any meaner,
Now Gojira's missing his weiner.
"Hillary ate the whole cock"
And then she started on his intestines as he screamed and writhed.
Like a long writhing tentacle cock that just keeps going up the colon and into the small intestine?
Pretty certain that was how a Dresden File novel endeded.
Which one? I've read them all, and I don't recall that.
OK Fine. that wasn't how it ended. Happy?
About as warm in bed as Spock.
With Huma she needs no cock
Gojira is a sock
^^my favorite entry so far
*Blushes*
Aww, thanks Tulpa.
Gojira, I think it would be better if you provided the first line and then everyone finished the whole thing on their own. That is how I am gonna play from now on, at least.
*sigh* You may be right. Mostly I think I'll just open it up and let people either contribute a line or finish the whole thing, as they see fit. I was hoping to make it a Mad Libs style thing, but we'll see next week.
She's as emotionless as Dr. Spock
But not smart like a Vulcan

The right to earn a living is... well, requires permission that you have to beg for.
Unsurprisingly, leaders in German and France are supporting the EU. (guess where those taxes might go?)
And guess whose tax-heavy economies look ever so slightly less comparably terrible than they did before.
Mark David Chapman has not been granted parole. I guess being a part of a decent band means more than being a President to the leftists running the prison systems.
...I'm going to assume this is sarcasm?
Has Crusty ever been known for Sarcasm? Condoms and wall-mounted lube dispensers, maybe. But sarcasm is the road never traveled in Crusty-Land.
I've always assumed that Crusty eschewed condoms, because part of love is sharing viri.
Also, he doesn't need lube. Decades of not showering have allowed slippery skin-oils to build up all over the surface of him. Do NOT let him set on your furniture.
Great typo, Citizen X.
My furniture is leather. Sit away, Crusty.
Paul is consistently one of the most intelligent and insightful commenters Reason has.
Sarcasm? No commenter is more literal than Crusty. Everything he says is exactly what he means.
To the best of my recolletion. Mr. Chapman is in prison being convicted of a crime. Mr. Hinckley is in mental institution being found not guilty by mental defect. Apparently, Mr. Hinckley is no longer defective.
Maybe he should stay with whomever granted him parole for a bit.
Exactly. It's a crime to shoot John Lennon. It's a confusing situation where right and wrong are not easily understood to shoot Reagan.
There was that infatuation with Jody Foster that made him a bit twitchy.
My infatuation with Jody Foster didn't make me psycho. It was my genes.
My infatuation with Jody Foster that made me a bit twitchy at the moment I released my essence.
It's a bigger crime to have missed Yoko.
Oh, no, you didn't!
I did - and I'd do it again. I'm a rebel.
Chapman actually murdered someone.
that too
Do they give a nobel prize for attempted chemistry?
HInkley's crime was greater. He killed James Brady, gave Haig an opening for a coup, gave us the Brady gun control group and the Brady bill.
Chapman killed a pinko musician.
It isnt even close.
He did not kill James Brady.
Actually, Brady died as a direct result of the gunshot wound. His death was ruled a homicide.
Well shitsticks. Brady died on August 4, 2014, 33 years after the shooting. His death was ruled a homicide, caused by the gunshot wound he received in 1981.[2]
So the cops beat Kelly Thomas unrecognizable who dies hours later, and his death is ruled as "lack of oxygen to the brain" and some wackjob wings Brady who dies at 74 yrs of age, and it's a homicide?
But the decision to pronounce Brady's death a homicide 33 years after he was wounded outside the Washington Hilton on Connecticut Avenue NW raises questions about whether prosecutors can, and will, try to get around double jeopardy ? the legal concept that protects a person from being tried twice for the same crime ? and pursue a murder charge.
This can't possibly go wrong.
What if Brady had inexplicably lived to be the oldest human alive?
Think how different history would have been had Hinkley been successful in his attempt.
AIDS would have been cured 25 years sooner, that's for sure.
Uhh, it wouldn't have happened at all, or did you not get the memo?
Also, no crack in the inner cities.

Thanks to you, I just got a distressing image in my mind when I thought of the name Broomhilda.
Was it this BroomHilda?
Ah, I'd been wondering why they suddenly decided to release a rating. Guess it was too damaging for them to sit it out.
A week ago, they refused to rate the CF, since their 'business model' wasn't understandable.
Somehow it all made sense this week.

Today's "dog bites man" poll news: Voters are more scared of what the candidate they oppose might do as president than they are excited about the candidate they're supporting.
This is why the executive needs more power.
Biden locked a reporter in a closet.
Just throws in the "White House journalists", because they know most people won't figure out what that means.
Biden goes to parties, sometime until four.
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door.
That at least gave us that modern version of The Iliad by R Kelly.
I would think Greece and Spain would be most supportive here.
I doubt they care who Germany and France rob to prop up their flailing economies.
For instance, it has one of the worst records in terms of FOIA requests,
Well, are FOIA requests even possible when the top government officials are using private email servers?
Let's not forget all the backup tapes that mysteriously vanish after being subpoenaed.
No, they are not. And that of course was the point. That entire aspect of this has been largely ignored.
That entire aspect of this has been largely ignored.
Not by many of the commenters here, but otherwise, you are correct. The whole point was to avoid oversight and transparency.
So much this.
The server was put in place to prevent FOIA from finding all the connections between the State Department and the Clinton Foundation.
The exposure of classified data is just an added insult and injury.
"John Hinckley Jr., failed Ronald Reagan assassin, will leave the psychiatric hospital and start living at his mother's home in Williamsburg, Virginia, starting Sept. 10."

NYT = Telling the Tough Stories
Like, "No Actual Connection Between Assange and Russia - But Cui Bono? Ergo, Russia Wins Whenever He Leaks "
When did the NYT get so patriotic?
January 20th, 2009. Weren't you paying attention?
If you told me in 2012 that in four years we'd be having the Third Red Scare sans actual communists I wouldn't have believed you.
Led by the NYT, I'd have double not believed you.
It really is weird how scared of Russia we've all suddenly gotten. They don't want to pick a fight with us. We actually all acknowledge they don't want to pick a fight with us, but for some reason we are super concerned about them.
They are one of the few nations on earth right now that the left can demonize and feel comfortable about it. Majority white and going through a major Christian religious revival, a strongman leader you can't characterize as left that targets favoured identity groups.
Note how no one who is this concerned about Russia having Clinton's emails are as concerned about, say, the decade of Chinese hacking for military secrets.
There are old warriors and bold warriors but there are no old, bold warriors. But there are still old, bold cold warriors. Not surprising when you think about it. Most of the senior party officials (on either side) as well as the bureaucracy grew up with the notion of the Russians as The Eternal Enemy. I'm sure they have people over there stuck in the same habits.
Dmitry Medvedev was supposedly Obama's favorite counterpart. But in May 2012 he was replaced by Vladimir Putin returning to the Presidential office. And Obama cannot deal with Putin. About this time the relations with Russia started to go downhill. Then Obama's media lackeys felt (or got an order) that it was fine to engage in some Russia-bashing. I recall an episode on Jon Stewart's Daily Show comparing (and thus mocking) Russian politicians to the Republicans. That was right before the Sochi Olympics, that is before the annexation of Crimea when the relations officially got really bad.
Remember that law about forbidding foreigners from 'promoting homosexuality to minors'?
That was the breaking point. Invading Ukraine, fuck it, all those shit places belong to Russia anyway. Anti-Gay law? Boycott Absolut!
It's not just foreigners. Russian citizens cannot promote homosexuality to minors either. That law was passed in 2013. But Pussy Riot was before that. In 2012. Then Russia was widely ostracized.
And it was Boycott Stoli! It was retarded in its own special way.
Well Putin can certainly deal with Obumbles. How many times has he punked his ass now? A dozen?
The first Red Scare had at least some communists.
Of course they are all in positions of power now...
If Ireland really and truly doesn't want to fuck over Apple by charging them more tax, they should just make the bill due in 2115. We'll surely have had a massive hyperinflation event by then.
I have it on good authority that we'll all have drowned in the rising sea long before that.
By 2112 the priests of Syrinx will have eliminated money anyway.

[Triggered - by Neal Peart's progversion betrayal]
Peart basically went nuts after his wife and daughter died, I wouldn't take it personally. He went all weirdo-born again Christian lecturer after that and it's been downhill since.
Wikipedia says, after that happened, he went out for a motorcycle trip, and clocked 55,000 miles.
Now, I've been broken up about stuff before, but that's just on some whole other level.
Ouch, I didn't know that.
Then again I haven't followed Rush since about 1991.
"An explosion on launch pad at a SpaceX testing in Florida destroyed a rocket and a satellite during a routine test."
Paul Krugman applauded.
"Paul Krugman applauded."
Really?
I would have thought his reaction would be "needz moar boom"!
He'll finally be able to offload some of those babysitter coupons.
Well I'm sure he would have preferred a nuclear explosion wiping out half of the state but Begger's can't be choosy.
Pennsylvania regulators have reinstated an $11 million fine against Uber for operating within the state without approval.
What part of common wealth do you not understand?
Government is stuff we steal together.
^THIS. Awesome.
Anyone posted this already?
A fear of BDS thugs and women's studies shrews led to this:
How Political Correctness Chills Speech on Campus
What's a BDS?
Anti Jew nonsense.
It's a society for Banal Diseased Screamers.
Boycott, Divest, Sanction Israel
So, Jihadis, eh?
Can students grow a pair please? Stop being scared to show things. It seems the only acceptable means of expression are protesting other people's expression.
In this case, certain professors need to grow a pair. They were too busy trying to anticipate the concerns of students; if the Atlantic piece is correct, I don't think any students even got a chance to throw a hissy fit. Two or three professors simply assumed they would and rescinded the "tentative" invitation.
Ironically, according to the article, movie was right-on with Settlers Are Racist Scum outlook, so they ditched a movie people they worried about would agree with.
As you all may have noticed, we have a fantasy football league for commenters at H&R. It's the libertopiest league anybody can imagine that has a FAAB budget. Anyone interested in joining can hit me up at rockaction8@gmail.com. We have about six spots left -- all are welcome!!
NYT = Don't Say They're Not Self-Aware
Is a Long History of Calling Everyone in the GOP "Racists" Undermining Its Utility Against Trump?
Don't worry! They exculpate themselves in the process, but use it as a cudgel to emphasise how TOTALLY SERIOUSLY SERIOUS IT IS THIS TIME
riiiiiight. I presume that 'rethinking' will last about... hey look over there! SOMEONE TOUCHED A BLACK DUDES HAIR = OMG SO RACIST
Particular libels are like money, more you make the less any one of them is worth.
Hillary's economic policies are certainly fascist.
And there's the "Everything for the Clintons, nothing outside the Clintons, nothing against the Clintons" ethos.
"Stronger Together". Like a bundle of sticks.
So Mitt Romney isn't dangerous to women, gonna put blacks in chains, doesn't give factory-workers' wives cancer, and is no longer LITERALLY HITLER? I'm glad they finally sorted that out.
Well, not now he isn't.
The funny thing is that they still are wrong. Trump is anything but an extremist. They really think it is different this time, but they always think it is different.
All anyone has to do to understand Trump is read his damned book. It's right there in black and white.
You are right, he is not an extremist but his negotiating technique is something most people are not familiar with.
The lesson of the Boy Who Cried Wolf?
"Never tell the same lie twice!"
The boy who cried Hitler
Excellent album title suggestion.
"If you have grounds to believe there is a ferocious predator at large, don't appoint as your sole watchman a 12-year-old child whom you have resolved to ignore."
Meh, the wolf ate the annoying child and everyone was happy. Well apart from the annoying child.
You're smarter than me because I didn't understand a word of that blinding gibberish.
Yeah no, they aren't actually rethinking their position. They just are upset that no one takes their insults seriously anymore. Trumps a racist? You mean like Romney is a sexist? They heard that one too many times and now have to write think pieces about how it's really true this time.
That's a decent summary of my take as well.
who really is, essentially, in my opinion, a fascist
The numerous modifiers all definitely actually really indicate that they are a fascist.
Guys, there's this guy Hitler...and I totes seriously think he was a fascist. /said no one ever
The comments are great. Half of them are basically saying that the media is right to use this language because every republican really is such a horrible person, that all of them must be vilified at all times.
Basically half our country is evil. How do you know if you're evil? Easy. Are you a liberal? Then congratulations, you're not evil!
One commenter even says the entire GOP has been taken over by a "white hate group".
One commenter even says the entire GOP has been taken over by a "white hate group".
They've been saying that since 1964. Funny how they're all pining for the days when Barry Goldwater gracefully got his ass beat.
Today's "dog bites man" poll news: Voters are more scared of what the candidate they oppose might do as president than they are excited about the candidate they're supporting.
Trust democracy.
" the European Union's attempt to force Ireland to make Apple pay more in taxes "
This is more about Ireland's low taxes than about collecting the money. It is unfair for Ireland to out-compete the rest of Europe.
That's the crux of it and detractors and defenders alike all pretty much say as much.
SINK WITH THE REST OF US OR ELSE.
Absolutely correct.
And it is an example of why the Brexit sore losers who wanted to stay in the EU were full of crap when they tried to portray those who voted to leave as ignorant, unsophisticated Xenophobes who don't know what's in their own best interest.
The only benefit to the EU is the free trade of goods with no tariffs and the free movement of people within it.
There is zero benefit to the cronyist and politicized economic central planning by unlected and unaccountable apparatchiks. The EU was outlawing British electric tea kettles, causing power outages by forcing the closing of reliable fossil fuel power plants, etc. If the benefit of tariff free trade is outweighed by all the other EU crap that comes packaged with it, then leaving the EU is a perfectly rational decision.
Actually, and this is a bit of a twist, these taxes would all go to the government of Ireland, which vociferously insists that it is not owed anything. So the whole story if a bit more complicated than it appears at first glance. But let spare you the lecture and skip to the conclusion: Cook is still right and the EU is still wrong.
It *should* make Cook more libertarian to boot.
But it won't.
This is precisely the crowd that he is most eager to please. The fact that they turned on him so quickly is wonderful, but it won't change his need to be accepted by them.
The argument is that Ireland is undermining their price. It is "unfair" business practices for governments
This.
So much.
Ireland : We can government for less.
EU: Don't do that.
Hanjin filing for bankruptcy. Global economy just fine, nothing to see here.
Shit. Better buy a new TV now.
No.
Wait until it collapses and then buy one for $5.00.
You might not get it shipped here from China but that's beside the point.
That's definitely one of those OH SHIT moments.
Serious question: What is Hillary's immigration plan?
I mean, we hear about Trump's constantly, what is the alternative? Has she even bothered putting one out? I can see not wanting to do so, as no good can come from that.
It would be entertaining to see Repubs pull that out like the Dems do for Obamacare. "If you think my plan is so bad, where's yours?"
One thing that can be said about Trump* is that he's the most likely candidate to actually say that on the debate stage.
*Not an endorsement of Trump.
Serious question: What is Hillary's immigration plan?
It's a complex matrix of donation levels to the foundation. But it essentially comes down to Bronze, Gold and Platinum membership status.
So who will be the co-branded credit card? USBank, Citi, Wells Fargo, or Capital One?
What's in your hard drive?
Hillary's only immigration plan is more Syrians as I have read.
"Voters are more scared of what the candidate they oppose might do as president than they are excited about the candidate they're supporting."
People get excited about the candidate they support? Who the fuck are these people?
Fuckin' herd animals. I wonder if Mr. Lizard will make me an honorary reptile. My own species disgusts me.
Wrap your head around this one:
Do they explain how he became a 'registered sex offender'? because it seems like 'Retarded over-punitive laws' are simply piling on top of one another now.
no one wins except the lawyers.
vaguely:
Clark had been convicted of indecent liberties for sexually assaulting another junior-high student in 2004 and was required to register as a Level 1 sex offender, according to the court case.
Who knows what the indecent liberties were.
If you read the whole article, it's long and the idea is that because she and Clarke met while AT a school function, the school should have done a better job of keeping them separated while on campus*, therefore, once he had "access" to her, the subsequent actions stem from there. -- that's my non-lawyer summation of how the court ruled.
*And the school apparently knew or had knowledge that he was a registered level 1 sexy-time offender.
God its almost like making kids into sex offenders has obvious foreseeable costs and imposes burdens on others which hugely magnify the potential for further litigation.
Who could have possibly seen that coming?
Maybe they girl's lawyer set the whole thing up.
This sounds more like he was an actual dangerous sex offender and the school could or did not treat him as such.
Though I am not not sure what the school could have done without segregating him from any potential victims.
@ 13?
I'm not saying its not possible. I'm saying it raises the question as to whether the designation was ever justified in the first place. Kids get made sex-offenders for *texting*. I'm pretty sure titty-grabbing might qualify these days.
Well, he stepped up his game at 18, so there's that.
How many hit points does a level one sex offended get?
Which would have made him 13 or 14 at the time.
I was about to point that out. He would have been a middle-schooler at the time, as well
All the decision is saying is that it is possible that the HS was negligent in failing to protect her not that they were. So that isn't so bad.
The bad part is that I bet you a hundred dollars that the law required the high school to admit the offender, even though he was a danger to the other students. And I bet you a hundred dollars more that the law also required the school to keep from the parents and students the fact that he was dangerous.
The State Supreme Court, in a case of ravenous curiosity and anticipation over the particulars of the case of a 14-year-old rape victim, decided ("bring the popcorn") that the 14-year-old girl should go on being a witness to her own case against a school district. Yes, let's get everything out, little girl.
Oh, and because the school district was supposed to protect her or something.
"It's only when you find yourself describing someone who really is the definition of an extremist ? who really is, essentially, in my opinion, a fascist ? that you recognize that the language that you've used in the past to describe other people was hyperbolic and inappropriate and cheap," Wolfson said.
Wait, what? Mitt Romney wasn't actually an anarchist?
Bill Clinton wasn't actually a socialist? And then we got Obama. This works both ways unfortunately.
I cant see how anyone could discredit themselves more than that.
"I lied my ass off in the past, but this time I really mean it."
The only appropriate response to this is "fuck off."
You misspelled Antichrist.
NYT = RACISM AND RACIST RACISTS EVERYWHERE
(in much smaller headline, further back in the same section)
Chicago has worst month of shootings in 20 years
90 gun-homicides in a month! no mention of race of shooters or victims.
My question is what makes him think I care?
If only Chicago would enact some common sense gun control!
It's Indiana's fault.
It's those gun show loopholes that live near South Bend causing all the raucous.
(Technically, we can't claim any other causes, as they have been [REDACTED])
I think there is a good possibility that Chicago could be Detroit in 50 years if nothing changes. The state of Illinois is bankrupt and Chicago has some of the highest tax rates in the country.
I think 50 years is generous
more like 50 months
Clearly the solution to this is common sense gun control.
Morons keep implementing the same solutions, problem keeps getting worse. Obviously they haven't hit it hard enough.
I would like to propose a new HnR rule, before even looking at today's comments.
No More "Nice band/album name"
Enough is enough. Bah. Damn kids.
"Bah. Damn Kids" is Enough is Enough's best album, IMO.
🙁
Sacrilege
"Bah. Damn Kids" is a pretty good band name.
It's a great album title
Proposal denied with prejudice.
I though "Denied With Prejudice" was a creative step backwards for Proposal.
What about Porn Name. We can still do porn name, right?
Get off my fucking lawn.
This thing about time and politicians, it has a way of stripping away the bullshit and getting to the truth.
Sycophants try. They always do, but inevitably, Obama knows his legacy will be one of failure and disharmony.
And he is desperately trying to change that. But everything he does in that regard jist looks like the flailing of a drowning man.
When all of your premises about the world are wrong every solution you implement will fail. At some point you would think he would figure out that all of his premises are wrong.
Subway Jared suing the parents of one of his victims.
God damn, the balls on this guy.
Someone should shove a foot long up his ass and down his throat.
Well, as long as they're over 18, so he doesn't enjoy it.
You screwed her up and allowed me and my pervert friend to take advantage of her. What a dirtbag.
This is his lawyers doing this not him,
It portents grave problems if they win.
Think about it,
"God damn, the balls on this guy."
Said no one over 14.
So Tony has been active today, after a period of absence, and that had me reflecting upon my own life; my triumphs, my failures, my half-filled dreams.
The Cosmos is truly a better place with you in it, Tony. 10 Tonies out of Ten.
And he's in fine freakish frightening form.
"Now, I am become Tony, destroyer of Words."
I have no problem with him being in the same Cosmos, but I'd at least prefer it if he was on a different planet. Maybe we can stick him on a wee one like The Little Prince.
So he can fly from planet to planet at will?
Fortunately Antoine de Saint-Exup?ry did not understand the mechanics of spaceflight (not his fault, it was the bloody 40s).
Tony is often comically stupid. He is also the picture of the neurotic queen. But he really doesn't bother me that much. There are other posters that get on my nerves a lot more than Tony.
I'm sorry John. I will never fat shame your hot list again.
This is exactly why you can't really be bothered by Tony that much. He is impossible to take seriously.
Pretty much. And once in a great while, he will actually say something intelligent. No kidding.
Agreed . Its memorable when it happens because its so rare.
Tony is a sock. He has been busted a number of times, but people always forget.
He's your sock, isnt he John?
*glares menacingly*
"Pennsylvania regulators have reinstated an $11 million fine against Uber for operating within the state without approval."
Hey, that's not just dipping their beaks, that's stuffing their snouts into the trough and eating everything in sight.

...I just noticed that when you tell Recommended Videos to fuck off? it "asks you why" now.
Which allows you to say "this channel sucks and i want nothing to do with it".
Which i've been hoping for since the first time i ever accidentally clicked on one of those "adults/kids react to some viral thing"-videos.
The 'react' videos were the type of thing that gold old and grating faster than anything that got old and grating... faster than Alanis Morisette. That's how fast.
French government considers setting up new organizations and rules to integrate Muslims into French life
"But some Muslim leaders at the conference said they were "quite skeptical" whether these organisations could make a difference, "especially with the younger generation, many of whom are marginalised and isolated in French society", said Turton."
I think that means, "give us more money."
And since this is Al-Jazeera, then here's how they describe the problems France is having with Muslims. See if you observe anything curious about the sequence in which things are listed:
"Tensions are high between France and its Muslim community in the wake of a controversial ban of swimwear worn by some Muslim women, known as the burkini, and a string of recent attacks around the country."
This sounds like re-education camps.
I'm surprised they mentioned part B at all. Progress.
This was pre-empted by a comment i made yesterday, referencing =
The West Can Have Burkinis or Democracy, But Not Both
the summary being that 'legal rulings' can not precede and force the cultural accommodation.
Gay-Marriage in the US happened because it was change that was inevitable. Everything was leading in that direction. Even if the ruling came against opposition, it was opposition that was in decline.
By contrast, these rulings/attempts by govt in Europe to 'enforce' greater assimilation of Muslims? Are working *(and prompted by) exactly the *opposite* cultural forces. People are agitating *against* them, yet being told by "The Law" that the reverse 'should be' happening.
It is not a good formula.
Tension over bhurkinis, not because some jihadi maniac drove a tractor trailer rig over hundreds of children.
Got it.

So Kapernick has gone nuts because he is under the spell of some dumb ass Egyptian Marxist girlfriend. Men really will do anything for a piece of ass.
Hey, that's just a bunch of text plus a headshot of Kapernick!
Looking at some pictures of her...I'd wear a Fidel shirt and sit through all kinds of silly songs. Hole-ee shite is she smokin' hot.
Love him or hate him, Colin knows how to attract some of the hottest pieces of ass.
(Pictured: Former Kapernickista J. Marie)
Look at the eyebrows. They scream 'crazy'.
No thanks.
In fairness to Kapernick, at least he went commit for one hell of a piece of ass. She is smoking.
Hmm?
She's packing some heat, but i'm not that crazy about her honker.
But then..... by contrast, she seems a veritable pixie.
Oh, you're one of those...
A connoisseur of jappy-girls? Indeed
That's where Osama has been hiding.
Yes.
Strangest thing you have done to impress a woman?
Pretended to be a vegetarian to get in the pants of an attorney who worked for PETA. She was hot as hell and pretty wild in bed. It didn't last, but it was totally worth it.
I really shouldn't encourage you
I am getting old. I find myself wildly attracted to the chick in this commercial.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8--HRraGck
She is some Czech actress. She is very hot but she is also like 38. Finding her so attractive makes me feel so old.
You can put a positive spin on it. When you get older, the pool of people you can find attractive increases.
"as you are now so once was I . As I am now so you shall be"
Way back I remember a Dork Tower comic, in which main character, after some introspection, realizes that he's truly old because he finds moms in soap commercials attractive.
So there are fat vegetarians out there?
I've sighted one.
I've sighted one.
By the way, that's kinda low. Most vegetarians are fine dating a non-vegetarian. I've dated a couple and they didn't care that I ate meat. A PETA person is a different beast though, I guess.
A PETA attorney vegetarian-lover.
Showed up.
shaved my head when my gf said she thought Luke Wilson was hot (after his shaved his) in "Royal Tenenbaums"
now that i think about it, i don't think it was to "impress" her so much as irritate her.
Killed her pimp and dumped the pieces in Lake Michigan.
I mean, held her purse while she shopped.
Well, yeah.

The Youtube channel for Roku seems to have undergone a massive revision, and not for the better. Suddenly there are dozens of unwanted videos and channels cluttering up the place. Also, "search" from Roku sucks. I have been searching for and casting videos from my phone.
True. Concurrent with the greater functionality i mentioned, is an increase in the number of "Streaming now" videos being promoted in the recommended section.
most are entirely unrelated to shit i normally watch.

Apple ought to just say, "whatevs!" to the EU instead of dignifying it with a proper legal response and strongly imply, or say outright that Apple products will continue to be produced according to Apple's projections of demand. Let the EU try to curb a lack market in iPhones. Seriously, if European millennials might ever show a backbone to their statist slavers, just take away their iPhones.
