Larry the Cable Guy: "I'm a Trump man and when I say 'Trump Man,' I mean Gary Johnson"
Blue Collar Comedy stalwart and Prilosec pitchman makes novel case for LP nominee: "Do I want to poop my pants or do I want somebody else to poop my pants?"
Via the Libertarian Republic comes footage of "Blue Collar Comedy" star and Prilosec pitchman Larry the Cable Guy dissing both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Not that anyone could blame him, but Larry goes deeply scatological while also making the case for personal autonomy.
On Fox & Friends a couple of days ago, he said, "I'm a Trump man and when I say Trump Man, I mean Gary Johnson." He clarified, "The choice is, let's see, Do I want to poop my pants or do I want somebody else to poop my pants….I think I'll go with pooping my own pants. That ought to give you an answer right there."
Larry the Cable Guy (real name: Daniel Lawrence Whitney) indicated there was no way he'd vote for Hillary Clinton and that while he agrees with some of what Trump says, he's put off by "some of the things he says." In a wide-ranging conversation, Larry also weighs in on the controversy surrounding the refusal of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to stand during pre-game performances of the national anthem ("that's the great thing about America—you have the right to do something like that—that's one of the greatest things about America; that and the cheese bread at Red Lobster"), what he considers unprecedented levels of political divisiveness, Obamacare ("I'm pretty sure it's not doing well"), and his new special, which is already streaming on Netflix.

The Johnson campaign responded with this tweet:
.@GitRDoneLarry We need to talk. Call me.
— Gov. Gary Johnson (@GovGaryJohnson) August 30, 2016
While celebrity endorsements really mean very little in the grand scheme of things, this one is intriguing given Larry's working-class, common-man shtick. His routines are often taken simply to be racist, sexist, anti-intellectual gags designed to comfort rednecks and hillbillies (comedian David Cross made precisely this case years ago), but that's wrong, in my opinion. As often as not, his jokes satirize all elements of America, including the preferences and customs of his own apparent audience of "blue-collar" whites (he used to do a bit where he noted that illegal immigrants "don't speak no good English" in a way that undercut criticism of English as a second language) and he's a pretty sharp person (read this interview with The Onion's AV Club). To the extent that he "represents" the constituency that supposedly forms Donald Trump's core base, it's certainly interesting that he is openly (and in character) talking up Gary Johnson rather than the Republican nominee.

Never liked this asshat; don’t think his schtick or persona is funny. And it’s every bit as fake as Michael Moore’s.
Give me Jeff Foxworthy any day, who really is one of the “rednecks” that he pokes fun at.
Foxworthy and I went to the same school. He, like Jimmy Carter, left before graduating.
And I agree, I didn’t care for Larry’s routine as fake. Like Colbert.
A friend of mine (musician) was on a radio interview show with him. He was outraged- “We talked during the commercial break. The accent is totally phony and the guy was wearing a PINK SHIRT!”
And it’s every bit as fake as Michael Moore’s
Do people not realize that it’s a character he created for a radio show? Of course it’s fake.
All Domestic Dumbass needs to know is he said mean things about his “daddy.”
He’s so transparent he could be used as a window.
Are you insinuating that Archie Bunker wasn’t a real person either?
Yeah, but I’m pretty sure Sanford and Son was an autobiography.
It’s like saying “that Ernest P. Worrel guy is a big phony!”
Foxworthy is just a second-rate Jerry Clower clone.
Who in the world is Jerry Clower?
David Cross is the worst. Him and fellow alt comedian Patton Oswalt.
I hated that Cross was so good on Arrested Development. It made me want to set myself on fire.
Cross is a helluva funny guy. He’s also an insufferable asshole. Unlike leftists, though, I can appreciate the work of an artist despite hating the artist himself. It’s one of the things I hate most about the left, that for them doubleplusungood opinions make someone a nonperson.
He is. His standup is a little political for my taste, mostly. But Mr. Show and their new thing on Netflix were awesome. He and Odenkirk are just brilliant comedy writers.
Mr Show was fantastic.
I highly recommend w/ Bob and David if you haven’t seen it. Basically more Mr. Show, but everyone is older.
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret is pretty great.
I couldn’t get through a whole episode of w/ Bob and David. I must be missing something because I didn’t find it funny at all. I liked Cross in Arrested Development, though.
The first episode wasn’t the strongest. I’d recommend another try. But maybe you just don’t like the style or something.
Third. David Cross has done great work for a long time, but what a douche.
Patton Oswalt is amazing. Watch his “Angry Magician” routine sometime.
Mr show is pretty good. “So david, how’s that cock ring working out for you?” “Well, my girlfriend likes it, my boyfriend loves it, but my wife haaaates it”. But yeah he’s insufferable out of character.
That sound you hear is SIV sewing the sleeves back on to all of his shirts.
*staggers up to applaud furiously*
Are we not doing euphemisms anymore?
Staggers? Is it noon already?
It’s 9 PM in Switzerland.
He’d boycott Prilosec too, but since all he eats is red meat, that would likely kill him.
Tasty.
We must make babies together.
Bravo.
yes, but that was notable mostly for being the moment at which “Millions of people simultaneously realized that David Cross was a complete raging asshole”.
Because David Cross’ comedy routine was always about was “Telling smug lefties what they already believed”?… it functioned as a very-awkward moment where lots of people saw their own barely-veiled contempt for “regular americans” being reflected back at them. And it was pathetic and pitiful.
Basically, David Cross’ “Larry the Cable Guy”-rant was a moment when millions of Gen X fans realized that cynical snark had run out of gas.
It had zero effect on “Larry”, because its not like David Cross & Larry The Cable Guy ever had lots of overlap between their fanbase. It wasn’t exactly the Biggie-Tupac beef. Larry went on making piles of money doing his one-man-Hee-Haw, and David continued turning into a parody of himself.
“Some people say Larry’s only successful because he’s pandering to the lowest common denominator, blatantly and not ironically exploiting people’s racist and homophobic tendencies. Don’t listen to these people, Larry. They’re just bitter and jealous and right.”
– Greg Giraldo
But Greg Giraldo’s dead, so Larry wins! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
i’ve never actually seen “larry the cable guy” do his act. I have no doubt its stupid, and that the people who enjoy it are stupid too.
But you know what? I’ve also never seen a Transformers movie. And I’m pretty sure its stupid and the people who enjoy it are stupid too.
I’ve only seen about 2/3 of The Corporation (*i had the DVD from netflix for about a week and tried to get through it about 3 times before i quit trying). It was incredibly stupid and the people who enjoy it are incredibly stupid too.
I’m guessing Larry’s humor amounts to = “lookie over there at them fags and them immigrants and them innerlectuals – haw haw haw”
Yet huge swaths of the humor of the “open-minded liberals”, the tolerant and worldly? is basically the same = “Lookie over there at thems yokels and hayseeds and inbred truckers! yuk yuk yuk.”
I think they’re probably both partly right, and both wrong in equal measures. What i don’t have much tolerance for is one pretending that they’re so much different and superior to the other.

I’ve seen some of his act on TV, and you’re wrong. A lot of it is intended as a deliberately tongue in cheek send up of blue collar white redneck culture. And many of his jokes would probably get laughs even without the fake accent and redneck shtick. Also, I don’t think I’ve ever heard him use the word fags or bash on immigrants (and if he has, it was to lampoon his own fans, as noted in this article).
That being said, of the “Blue Collar Comedy Tour” comedians, my favorite by far is Ron White, then a tie between Foxworthy and Bill Engvall, and then Larry the Cable Guy.

Agreed
Ron White (paraphrase from Tater Salad bit about a confrontation with a group of bouncers):
That is just brilliant stuff.
“I’ve seen some of his act on TV, and you’re wrong.”
Don’t think I’ve ever seen ‘the act’, but I caught him doing what sure looked like improv once with Foxworthy and White, and I can tell you he had the audience caught off guard to where the laughs didn’t even begin until he was about to start a new riff.
He was HILARIOUS, but you had to be thinking quick to keep up with him.
He originally started out as a Seinfeld knockoff. At some point he started doing a routine involving a weird redneck guy who had been sent to fix his cable. The character became popular and eventually ended up becoming the entire act.
Originally it was clearly humor based on an outsider making fun of people like Larry, but over the years, he’s kind of “become the mask” so to speak.
I agree with Cynical Asshole below – Larry is more good natured, doesn’t put anyone down, and talks about redneck culture that people understand. He doesn’t bash anyone.
It’s not my humor but I still have to give him his props.
Foxworthy – while as someone pointed didn’t graduate highschool, he’s worth what a billion dollars? I saw him on Shark Tank and other areas. Seems like a nice standup guy. He gets along with Larry honestly.
Ron White is awesome though.
No, Jeff I will not eat at Golden Corral. Jeesh
while as someone pointed didn’t graduate highschool
Umm…no, he didnt graduate from Georgia Tech.
He clearly graduated high school.
Yeah, didn’t he work as an IT tech at IBM before his stand-up career?
I always liked the entire Larry the Cable Guy schtick. Basically, its a somewhat sympathetic caricature of rednecks.
And I think we all know people like that. Sure they might not be particularly sophisticated and sometimes even offensive. But, they’re generally good, decent, hardworking people that assholes like David Cross never refrain for a moment at sneering at.

I’m related to people like that. I have an uncle that is “the original Larry the Cable Guy” (seriously, I think he and Dan Whitney met at some point and Whitney stole his persona for his act) and another uncle that talked like Boomhower from King of the Hill And I’d be willing to bet that most people have some people like that in their family tree.

Mike Judge is also pretty good at mocking and poking fun at middle and lower America while not treating them with actual disgust. Hank will say things that are ignorant or shallow about subjects he’s unfamiliar or uncomfortable with, but it doesn’t reflect poorly on him as an individual. And they go out of the way to show that despite his more closed minded attitude to some things he’s still a hard working, moral and respectable person. He’s a character first and a caricature second.
Hank Hill kind of reminded me of Archie Bunker where the close-mindedness was more a result of limited exposure than maliciousness and when he actually ran into live examples of whatever he was bigoted toward, he’d do the right thing because they suddenly went from being abstracts to being real people.
It was pointed out years ago that, in terms of character and basic human kindness, Archie Bunker, contrary to what Lear and probably Carol O’Connor intended, was lightyears ahead of Mike Stivick. Even the premise of the show rested on the fact that Bunker was letting a guy who he disapproved of live rent-free in his home while the closest he got to gratitude from Stivick was regular put-downs for how bigoted he was.
Lear did not, but Carol O’Connor did intend him to be that way. O’Connor was a socialist who who felt then current Democrats had betrayed Rooseveltism by abandoning guys like Archie Bunker.
O’Connor was a socialist who who felt then current Democrats had betrayed Rooseveltism by abandoning guys like Archie Bunker.
I’d never heard of it that way. My understanding is that Lear and O’Connor were both so horrified at how popular Archie Bunker became after the first season, that they turned up the character’s buffoonery in the ensuing seasons to put Archie in situations where he always came out looking like a moron so he wouldn’t seem as dignified (sort of the same thing that happened with Homer Simpson, but for political reasons rather than cheap ratings and lack of originality).
I work outside of NYC as a corporate IT consultant with my own business. I also teach classes at a large university in NYC, both undergrad and graduate.
When I get home the corporate casual comes off, the cargo shorts and work boots go on, and I hang out and drink beer with the other white-shirt-wearing people in my neighborhood. I am a redneck.
I trust the rednecks more than I trust the corporate folks. I’ve been fucked over countless times by liberal and corporate types, but I have never been let down by a fellow redneck.
All I know is, given the choice between living next to blue collar work a day “rednecks” or smug elitist limousine liberals, I’ll take the work a day rednecks any day. At the very least they tend to mind their own fucking business, and tend to be straight shooters. I’ll take that over nosy progressive busy bodies.
Because David Cross’ comedy routine was always about was “Telling smug lefties what they already believed”?
You mean “speaking truth to power” and “sticking it to the man”, of course.
/smug leftist asshole
FeelTheJohnson and GitRDone!!
“Do I want to poop my pants or do I want somebody else to poop my pants?”
There are some kinky people here who would like it if their pants were pooped in by another person.
(No, I’m not one of them.)
One of the biggest problems with Trump is that nearly everybody agrees with “Some of the things” he says.
Libertarians, even, can find something to agree with in the form of his stance towards LGBT issues (relative to the rest of the GOP pool) and his initially stated desire to stay out of the conflict over the middle east and let other countries deal with it.
The problem is that he then contradicts himself and his supporters choose the statement they like best, his detractors choose the statement they like least, and the undecideds realize that he doesn’t mean a word of it and is just dishonest.
Of course he’s intelligent. He’s a Nebraska fan.
RE: Larry the Cable Guy: “I’m a Trump man and when I say ‘Trump Man,’ I mean Gary Johnson”
“Do I want to poop my pants or do I want somebody else to poop my pants?”
Umm…Larry, I think you’ve been taking too much Prilosec .
Your sentences there make as much sense as one of Trump the Grump’s or Heil Hitlary’s speeches.
“The choice is, let’s see, Do I want to poop my pants or do I want somebody else to poop my pants….I think I’ll go with pooping my own pants. That ought to give you an answer right there.”
Blue Collar Individualism FTW!
