Drunken Foreign Policy Debate: The New Fifth Column
This is what happens when you send free craft beer to a libertarian podcast with ex-CIA Buck Sexton guesting

This week's episode of The Fifth Column, your very favorite podcast starring Kmele Foster, Michael C. Moynihan and myself, was lubricated by the generous product of Hard Knocks Brewing, making it a tad more slurry than usual. All the better to talk about National Security Agency hacks, ISIS creation myths, global culpability and foreign policy writ large with former CIA operative and current radio host Buck Sexton.
Let the slurs commence!

Buck Sexton is such an excellent name for porn.
Buck Sexton has a hard-on... for justice!
Start working at home with GOOGLE! YAHOO. ABCNEWS AND MORE GLOBAL SITES? It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Monday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this ? 4 weeks past. I began this 7-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $97 per hour. i work through this web.. Go this website and go to tech tab for more details... http://goo.gl/jrG8Uv
This is exactly how Buck Sexton got into the biz!
That name must come with trigger warnings.
When the ancient Babylon gods gathered in council to discuss important matters, they debated once sober, and once drunk. That way they could come to a reasonable decision.
"I would ask Foreign Minister Aardbeg to weigh in!"
I'm sorry, I thought this was a wholesome podcast (with the occasional nigger thrown around). I have to draw the line at a "Buck Sexton," whatever that is.
Based on the link?
A swish.
Hmm... I really should've put that word in quotation marks, to make it clear that is the word that is thrown around...
This is so bad even I won't say anything.
Yeah, I was picturing Matt and Moynihan literally throwing around Kmele like a football.
Kmele? Is that Camille, like Paglia, or Ka Melee, like Egyptian soul fighting?
I'm going with Kay Mel.
More like the first. Kuhmele, but the Kuh sound is shortened.
Uhmele?
Kmele, kmozzle, hasenpfeffer incorporated!
I can't even.
"This is what happens when you send free craft beer to a libertarian podcast with ex-CIA Buck Sexton guesting"
Pointing out that it was craft beer seems unnecessary.
Fucking hipster.
FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED: I have it on good authority that Matt Welch was, and may well be consorting with, a dirty layabout hippy. Do with this information what you will.
Is the hippie also wearing a backpack?
A little black backpack?
I'm going to hell for linking to that shit, aren't I.
If you listened to any of it in the process of linking, then you're already in hell.
You think that's how Katherine got the job?
Moynihan? He sorta has a job.
Welch, why are you *asking* to be insulted? We'll do that anyway.
It's the only way he can get hard?
Matt's only contribution so far was to clarify that "The Fappening" had something to do with masturbation.
I am still confident i will learn something new at some point soon. involving computers. and spies. (checks watch)
Ah! "Duck Duck Go" is still in business. that's something.
Mr. Gilmore,
I'm in need of a new wardrobe. What fashion resources (website/magazines) would you suggest for a mid 30's male? Thanks.
Cargo shorts, birkenstocks with socks, and a fedora
So, no shirt?
You're a Florida Man, it's sort of assumed that you wouldn't know what a "shirt" is.
deep v-neck tshirt
I've been ripping the front of old t-shirts. Is that good enough.
That's even better. Make sure to rip the sleeves off too.
They're called domestic-abusers.
I have no idea. i've never read a "Fashion resource" in my life.
Do you ever wear suits for work or no?
No.
Minimum Wardrobe for any man in any station:
At least 1 White dress shirt
At least 1 White or Blue button-down collar Oxford cloth shirt.
1 Navy Blue suit.
1 Blazer or sportcoat
1 pair of gray flannel wool trousers
1 pair of chinos/khakis
Belt
Dress socks
1 pair of of Oxfords (Black, Brown, or Cordovan)
Dress shirts are normally made from woven cloth, and are often accompanied by a jacket, collar sleeve, and tie, for example with a suit or formalwear, but shirts are also worn more casually.
What devilry is this?!?
Seriously though, I did not know what oxfords were. Thanks for the lynx.
What's more important than "what" is "how" as in "how it fits".
A "Liquor in the Front, Poker in the Back" t-shirt and cargo shorts that fit are going to look more flattering than a suit and dress shirt that don't.
"Liquor in the Front, Poker in the Back" t-shirt and cargo shorts
I usually go with "Mustache rides: 5 cents" myself.
Yes, this. I did something similar. It has me covered for funerals, weddings, and business events.
Sweet, I've got all of that (but a gray suit, not navy).
I mostly don't wear nice things anymore because I just ruin them. But it is nice to be able to dress nicely on occasion.
I did start wearing button down shirts a few years ago because they look less slobby and are nicer to wear than t-shirts.
Gray and navy are friends. In truth, if one had to own only one suit, gray, navy, or charcoal are all acceptable colors, imo. That having been said, navy is the "traditional" men's color. Also, navy works with all complexions, no exceptions, whereas, some white guys who have a distinct "reddish" tint to their skin often don't look good in grays, (again, imo).
Ummm... How bad is it if all you only have is the socks? (asking for a friend)
Second question = do you own a sportcoat?
No.
If you get one, I'd suggest the navy blue blazer. It's pretty much the backbone of a good wardrobe.
Or it was in the 70s. Did they come back with the neckbeard, skinny jeans, and a general look of hipster douchebag?
Navy blazer is too timeless to ever be a hipster thing.
I pretty much live in scrubs and t-shirts. I've recently lost weight and figured it's time for a more mature set of clothes.
Get a few oxford cotton button downs, one pair of jeans that you do not wear gator wrestling, one pair of chinos, a blue blazer, and some shoes that are neither a boot nor flecked with the blood, vomit and urine of a patient or yourself.
one pair of jeans that you do not wear gator wrestling
In Florida there is not this idea. Next you'll say that the jeans should NOT be cut off mid-thigh.
SLOW DOWN!
/furiously scratches notes into piece of bark with buck knife
I mostly wear shirts like this with clean, dark Levis when it is not 900 degrees, and some people think I am high-class. Never pay full price for anything at that website, though.
Good basic dress shirt
Many shirts are toxic, in a literal sense, and consequently make me ill. I can wear the Hyde Park shirt without concerns.
I like that it isn't literally toxic.
some shoes that are neither a boot nor flecked with the blood, vomit and urine of a patient *brightens up*... or yourself *Awwww*
Actually, I'd avoid the blazer until you've got sport coats down. people don't understand the sportcoat/blazer distinction.
This is a sport-coat
This is a blazer
Blazer is more like, "other people might be wearing suits, so i better wear this".
I have to disagree with you here. A decent blue blazer can be worn pretty much any time you'd wear a casual sport-coat and can suffice when others are wearing suits. I regularly wear a blue blazer on casual Friday's with a nice pair of jeans.
we'll agree to disagree. Its sort of a context-driven thing.
i never wear a "blazer" unless i'm on the clock in some way. That would include 'business travel'. exceptions would be like.... i don't know, a baby-shower, or some sort of 'work drinks' or something more-formalish. anything id *iron* my clothes for.
To me there's a hard-line between 'sport coat' and 'blazer'. the former is 'anytime', the latter is more selective. i may have a wider definition of the former because i'll frequently wear them w/ a 3-day beard, with an undershirt and flipflops. 'Sportcoat' doesn't mean i'm trying to 'dress'. Its just an everyday thing that can be used in a wide-range of occasions.
The look i abhor is how midwesterners wear blazers all the time. with..... (spits) ...dockers and rockports. Its like an 'Easy Listening' radio station, only you're wearing it.
anything id *iron* my clothes for.
You wash them in Geritol?
You should get a poplin/cotton sportcoat. and/or some wool-tweed jacket (since fall/winter is coming)
in fact going to a thrift shop and just trying lots of shit on and buying a few of them for $20-50 or so is a very good way to start. Get stuff you don't care if you throw away later. If you go through 4-5 things to find one great-fitting, well built sportcoat, it will be worth it.
You should know what your jacket size. and your sleeve length. take a few minutes to "know what "fits" means. Its mostly in having the right sleeve length, shoulder width, and chest. the first 2 are more important
(since you hardly ever button jackets, chest can be off a little and not matter much; also, for a wool jacket, you might layer with it)
Basically, you need to start wearing "dress(ier) shirts" and sportcoats. and you won't know what looks good and what you like until you experiment a lot.
The easiest way to do it is to have 2 jackets = one "knock around all the time" thing *(usually something like this or this), and one "slightly sharper" (like this).
When you've got something light (cotton), something medium (wool) and something heavy (tweed) covering shades of grey, navy, and brown... you're off to a good start.
From there its just finding shirts and belts and deciding how hip or square you want to be.
What do you like to wear when it's too hot for jackets?
i've got a million guayabera-ish shirts, short-sleeve button-ups, bowling shirts, rugby shirts, etc. i used to wear v-neck undershirts around all the time but less so now that i've put on 20 extra lbs.
You live in the South; God gave you seersucker for a reason.
I didn't know what a seersucker was until today.
You don't really need that unless you intend to attend the derby, or wear a bow-tie and grow a handlebar mustache.
and if given the opportunity, WHY WOULD YOU NOT?
In my opinion, a good starter blazer is the Anderson-Little. In fact, that's all they sell.
Thanks for the advice and links. I like the thrift shop idea to figure out what I like without wasting a lot of money.
You should get a poplin/cotton sportcoat.
Sonny Crockett, without the sleeves rolled up?
No, that was linen and had padded shoulders.
Something like this .... (excuse the french-looking guy)... is the most-used article of clothing i have.
Isn't standard Florida attire some cut off jeans. a straw hat, and a woman beater with wolves on it?
Yes. But, I'm ready to evolve.
Gilmore, how often do you iron your jeans:
[ ] Once a week.
[ ] Once a month
[ ] Before putting them on regardless of interval
Mr. Gilmore,
I'm in need of a new wardrobe. What fashion resources (website/magazines) would you suggest for a mid 30's male? Thanks.
Do a google Image search on Grindr.
I've used these guys as a resource
As HM mentioned, 90% of looking good is getting the correct fit. If that means going to a professional and having them measure you and tailor your clothes to you, it's better than having an ill-fitting wardrobe.
Men's fashion is different than women's. In general, we have t-shirts, polos and button-down shirts as tops (with sportcoats, suit jackets, blazers, and winter coats as a second layer), we have jeans, chinos, khaki shorts, and dress pants as bottoms, and we have shoes. Therefore, we can't mix and match nearly as much in order to "express ourselves," and are left to the fit and the accessories to stick out from the crowd.

Therefore, we can't mix and match nearly as much in order to "express ourselves," and are left to the fit and the accessories to stick out from the crowd.
Lesson 1: Fit is most important
Pants are generally more overlooked when it comes to fit, but they tend to make or break your look. They need to be the right tightness and length.
For tightness, most people call it "draped." This means that we shouldn't be seeing the contours of your ass and thighs, but that the fabric should follow the general lines of your body. It should start out wide at the waist and narrow up by your ankles. There shouldn't be wrinkles and bunches due to excess fabric, but there shouldn't be lines and bunches due to the fabric catching on your thighs/knees/etc. Avoid pleats as they give the illusion of bunches where there isn't really a fit problem.
For length, it depends on the pants you're wearing. Most often, you're looking for a quarter or half "break" at the ankle. The less formal your pants the more break is allowable. Break is how much bunching exists at the ankle. No break means that the pants are perfectly tailored to the length of your inseam, so there is no bunching at the ankle. Full break is a heavy crease at the ankle from the bunched material. More than a full break (multiple creases) means that your pants are too long.
Properly fitted dress pants
Decent jeans fit, showing how much extra fabric he has around the thigh
For a dress shirt, it's a bit more complex. You want your collar to have some room (2 fingers) when buttoned. You want the sleeves to start mid-shoulder. You want the sleeves to be cut so that you have room to move, but they're not "billowy," you want the sleeves to end at your wrist joint when your arms are at your side, and you want the body to be fitting but not tight. The body should be long enough that it's not coming untucked every time you bend over.
Good dress shirt fit
For t-shirts and other more casual shirts, you want to make sure that the collar isn't too tight or loose, that the body isn't too baggy, and that the sleeves aren't too loose. I like my t-shirts a little shorter, so I look for them to end at the bottom of my belt.
Good fitting t-shirt

This is how I'm dressing from now on.
Wow. Good stuff. Thanks.
It did?!
*stares wide eyed*
Now Milo Symbol-Symbol is being discussed. I'm not sure what the NSA connection is, but i'm sure they'll tie it together soon.
Moynihan says he's got nothing in his Gmail except slightly-more-youthful-dick-pics.
He didn't clarify if they were his own.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO Mike-Mike ("mm")
I couldn't get very far into the Malice episode. I have a low tolerance for those who come across as having no idea they might be wrong about something. Moynihan better just lose that Vice gig or I'll have to get him fired.
This is interesting. You really can't overstate what irresponsible scum the media are. What a betrayal of the country it would be If it were to turn out that Hillary is not physically able to be President and she gets elected by a public that didn't know that because the media lied, But these dirtbags don't care.
http://ace.mu.nu/archives/365470.php
Sullivan, Clinton's top foreign policy adviser, was researching the drug Provigil for Clinton at the State Department in 2011, the Daily Caller reported.
Sullivan emailed Clinton information on Provigil and told her about its use and history. Sullivan noted in an email that Provigil is used for narcolepsy and treating patients with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Multiple Sclerosis who have excessive sleepiness.
Sullivan also noted that Provigil is often prescribed to treat "excessive sleepiness in patients with Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis."
He stated that Modafinil?the drug's original name?"gained attention in the medical community because it is the first effective stimulant with no significant potential for abuse" before explaining "it can be used for two to three day stretches at a time, with few known side effects and little risk of addiction."
Democrats don't care about that. They still won and that's all that matters. Anyway, Kaine will make an excellent potus, he's a democrat. More free shit, more taxes, what more could you want?
I had this discussion with a prog this morning.
Her: "You don't really believe that about her having Parkinsons, do you?"
Me: "I am not sure. We will find out soon enough. We certainly have reason to suspect her health."
Her: "Well, I just don't believe it."
Me: "You have absolutely no evidence that it is not true, and there is some to think it might be."
Her: "I don't care"
That is Cankles support in a nutshell.
Is this really the example you want to cite?
The "I dont' care" line pretty well summarizes it.
At least they can be honest about some things. I read a comment somewhere yesterday where one of them said, about the pay for play with the Clinton Foundation when Hill was SOS, "Oh who cares! Don't tell me that you wouldn't have done the same! I would have! We all would! You're just jealous!".
IOW, leftists have no morals or principals. If they did, they wouldn't be leftists.
"I don't care" could also be in reference to the nebulous "some" who are diagnosing Clinton with a rare disorder based on video clips.
I rarely have conversations with progs, but I had a rare one a couple of days ago. It was about the announcement they made about finding a possible earth like planet around Proxima Centauri. It went something like this:
Prog: We've already destroyed this planet and now we can't wait to go off to destroy another one!
Me: We can still save this planet, but we all have to turn off our cell phones, computer, and air conditioning. You first.
Prog: Who made the cell phones, computers, and air conditioning? The workers, that's who!
Me: What the... Hey, there was a guy named Marx who used to talk like that a lot. Wonder how that ever worked out?
Prog: Who knows, he died before it was all realized?
Me: Oh come on, his ideas were carried on for him. There was this place called the Soviet Union. They had to build a wall to keep people in. I hear it ended badly.
Prog: Someone else wants to build a wall!
Me: Oh, yeah, I knew Trump was a Marxist. So you support Trump?
End of conversation. It was bizarre yes, but you can always count on that with a prog.
It's over nobody cares. Hillary is a corrupt piece of shit and everyone knows it this doesn't matter. There could be an email out about how she eats fetus's for the stem cells every morning and the sycophants in the media and 40% of the population would spin it and rationalize that Trump is even more terrible some how. if the shit that has come out hasn't sunk her nothing will at this point.
I think there is some of that but it is not all that. There are a ton of people out there who get their information from the NYT and the major networks and as a result honestly believe that her health problems and scandals are just Republican attack points and not really any big deal. If you only watched ABC news and read the NYT, how could you not think that?
I know a lot of these sort of people and they are not rapid partisans. They just have no idea how badly they are being lied to. That cannot last forever. At some point they are going to realize how badly the media has lied to them and it is going to be ugly for them and for the media.
I know a lot of them as well, you don't think they recognize propaganda? I just don't think they're all that interested beyond pull the lever D for job security. They don't want to know, it's as simple as that.
I think a lot of the scare-mongering with Trump has been effective. When all you see on the news these days are inaccurate paraphrasings of shit Trump says, it's very difficult not to come to the conclusion that he's a maniac. Hillary has realized that the more she is seen publicly, the less people like her. She is, smartly, laying low (though she's got enough scandals around her that even avoiding the cameras can't completely save her).
The only thing Trump has is a Hail Mary at the debates. Whatever happens it's going to be spectacular. But I honestly think it's too late the lines have been drawn neither of these people are going to gain votes from now until November the only thing that could happen is people stay home or decide to vote independent, which benefits Hillary as the D's who usually have a better ground game/more money will have that at an unprecedented level this cycle.
They don't recognize propaganda and here is why. Think about people who mindlessly defend cops. Two things are true about such people; they have had the conviction and been told by everyone around them for their entire lives that cops are the good guys doing great work and they have no knowledge of the full truth about the police abuses that go on. If you spend your entire life being fed a given set of assumptions and the facts that contradict those assumptions are kept from you, what is really propaganda looks like the truth.
That is what happens with a lot of people in this country. Nearly everyone they have ever known shares the same set of false assumptions. And all of their sources of information suppress any facts that contradict those assumptions. Sure, other media outlets push those facts but those are seen as just partisan fringe outlets. Remember, one of the biggest and most important assumptions these people share is that their outlets are the unbiased truth and the only reliable way to be an informed person.
I don't know how exactly or when they cycles ends but it can't go on forever. At some point the bubble of bullshit these people live in is going to pop.
I think John has a point here. People commenting here (or most political blogs) are generally at least one standard deviation above normal in terms of political knowledge. That means almost 85% of the population knows less than just the people commenting here. For people who spend minimal amounts of time following the news, you're not going to get a lot of questioning of the dominant narrative.
My wife is one of those people.
We joke about our differing political views. But, I can tell that she feels disquiet at the possibility that the things I assert about Hillary are true. She varies between denial and bargaining "republicans do scummy things too; many great leaders have had an overactive libido".
Being in the insurance industry, she has (1) a great bullshit detector, and (2) a low tolerance for BS. The day she examines Hillary closely is the day she turns against the Hilbot.
Sadly, I think what's holding her back is her fear that if she turns on Hillary, my MIL who is a rabid and partisan Hillary supporter will excommunicate her. So she basically hides from the news and studiously ignores anything that might disturb her low info state.
She just busts her ass at work and makes lots of money.
Honestly most people just don't care to be informed about the political process and I really can't blame them. All the people at the national level are complete scumbags why care beyond social signaling, life's too short.
Pretty much. Trump is LITERALLY HITLER so there's probably ~40% of the population that will vote for her no matter what and probably another 3-5% that will do so almost no matter what. I'm pretty sure an email could surface in which she explicitly says, "Don't send the military, I want those pathetic bitches in Benghazi to die," and the race would still be even.
This is what happens when you send free craft beer to a libertarian podcast with ex-CIA Buck Sexton guesting
And this is why libertarians cannot have nice things.
somewhere along the line the entire point about the NSA hack seems to have been lost and now they're talking about the 'who created ISIS' debate
Did you hear that the Russians hacked the DNC? Trump is in league with them. True story.
Toats true. Trump said some vaguely complementary things about Putin once and that's basically the same thing as accepting millions of dollars in donations from the Russian government and transferring over massive amounts of U.S. owned uranium.
RAAAACISTS!!1!!!!1!!!1!!!!!
Loved the show, but having four different people is a bit much too much content at once for just an hour, no one can get a word in normally with just three.
Kennedy is there?
No Buck Sexton was there.
Just needed Mexicans and pot for the trifecta!
The show was going OK until they didn't push back on "The Iraq War was totally OK because it's important that we DO SOMETHING. Because spending thousands of American lives and a trillion dollars to still have a ME dumpster fire that might have happened anyway is the right thing because of Cambodia or something."
What. The. Fuck.
Meh. I didn't really take it that way so much as it happened how do we fix it.
Dumpster fires usually fix themselves eventually.
Eventually they do run out of trash to burn.
Kmele tried hard to keep things on track, but Moynihan and Welch were too drunk to care. It was a disastrous podcast.
They need to find guys who can hold their liquor.
Without Kmele the show would be a dumpster fire of Moynihan discussing south american and eastern european dictators and Matt Welch interjecting from time to time with humblebrags about some of the people he interacted with on one of his TV appearances.
And I would definitely still listen.
And I would definitely still listen.
Look, these guys are used to setting around sipping a watered down cocktail. Did you really think they could handle BEER, a real man's drink?
Hah, you have been insulted, cosmos! Yer mums smell of hamster berries! Yer daddies is a weasel! Now go away, before I must taunt you a second time!
What the hell is the alcohol content in the beers they were drinking?
If it's over 3 percent, that is some rough drankin for the cocktail cosmotarians.
Stop lying. Buck Sexton was the antagonist in Warty Hugeman and the Lost Treasure of Erection Island, not a real guy's name.
You can't expect these subliterates to know the canon, Warty.
It's a real guy's guy name.
the midway-to 2/3 of the podcast just seemed to be a rehash of "Every conversation about post 9/11 policy" which goes nowhere.
correction - entire second half until 4 mins before the end.
I've made $64,000 so far this year working online and I'm a full time student. Im using an online business opportunity I heard about and I've made such great money. It's really user friendly and I'm just so happy that I found out about it. Heres what I do,

Matt, with the save! reminds people that "No Fly Zones" (about to be the new policy under Clinton II) are just a way of pretending your not at war with people you're at war with.
Wait a second, is Matt claiming that Google is a monopoly? And further, is he asking if they're a monopoly on email?
Ok, this podcast is sounding suspiciously like an H&R thread. It starts loosely on policy, but devolves into dick jokes.
I LIKE IT!
So a blue hoodie and grey shorts? That was easy.
I was thinking wide-open spaces with no people in sight but that will certainly do.
