'Zombie Drug' Paranoia Resurfaces After Teen's Terrifying Homicidal Outburst

A 19-year-old man stabbed two strangers to death and tried to eat the face of one of them, once again provoking warnings about the "zombie drug" flakka.

A horrific and random murder in Florida, in which a 19-year-old man stabbed two strangers to death and tried to eat the face of one of them, has the media once again warning about the "zombie drug" flakka. The synthetic stimulant has been implicated in previous bizarre and violent incidents, most notably the 2012 attack on a homeless man in Miami in which the assailant was also found biting his victim's face. But despite widespread reporting on this attack as drug-induced, toxicology tests found no trace of synthetic stimulants in the attacker's body—something to keep in mind as we approach this latest attack.

In this case, the young man, Ausin Harrouff, was a student at Florida State University with no criminal record and no relationship to his victims. On Monday night, he abruptly got up from having dinner at a sports bar with his parents, entered the nearby garage of Michelle and John Stevens, and stabbed the married couple to death. A neighbor who tried to come to the Stevens' rescue was also stabbed but is expected to survive. When police arrived on the scene, they found Harrouff "grunting" and gnawing on Mr. Stevens' face.

Harrouff tested negative for cocaine, meth, marijuana, and opiates. But Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told reporters that Harrouff may been on the synthetic drugs known as flakka or bath salts. "We will be doing sampling of his blood to see if there was flakka or bath salts, which are known to cause what we call the excited delirium, and he did have some indications that we might be working with that," Snyder said.

Results of toxicology tests for those substance are still pending, yet there's reason to suspect they'll come back negative. For one thing, police report that Harrouff did not have the elevated body temperature typically associated with flakka use. He was also quite lucid, according to the intervening neighbor, which also betrays a lack of drug-induced psychosis.

Still, the media is running with the "zombie drug" story. Think they'll all issue updates if the toxicology tests come back negative?

      Florida is America's problem.

People take the damnedest things when prohibition drives relatively safe and enjoyable drugs underground.

Who hasn't felt like gnawing off a stranger's face after spending any significant length of time in Florida? I mean, come on.

Especially after having dinner with your parents.

          I also hate Rhywun's parents.

When will people wake up that this is just a smokescreen. Florida is ground zero for government and biotech research into reanimating dead tissue, and these incidents are either subjects accidentally let loose on the population or, more sinisterly, deliberate test cases to see how easily the population can be pacified with an infusion of the undead into an volatile situation.

I didn't know Herbert West was a Floridian.

Speaking of gnawing on tough meat, what does one do with five pounds of London broil?

Marinate it thoroughly. Overnight is best. I like chimichurri because it's tasty and simple to make. Pan sear it in a very hot pan (I put mine in the oven @ 500 degrees to get it hot and then put it on a burner set to HI) and finish in the oven or on the grill. Always err on the side of too rare - nothing sucks more than a dry, leathery London broil.

Thanks! Usually I leave beef cuts to the pros, but I couldn't pass on the price.

Broil it, like it says. Then slice it cold for sandwiches.

The wife and I spent a week in Florida in March 1998. Stayed in Sarasota. Had a nice time . Still, spent time at Siesta Key,snakes and huge bugs in the very nice landscaping .A day in the Everglades ,gators and more snakes..Played golf on the Gary Player course in Sarasota, signs warning of rattle snakes and a gator next to my ball on one hole. All in all the worst animal were the gulls on the beach.Nasty bastards. Still ,good weather and seafood .

The Thought Police have thus far failed to "rectify" some Google News Archives in which "scientists" claim LSD "is known" to cause insanity, defenestration, Demonic possession and aversion to government-mandated military conscription. These things are worth searching out before the Ministry of Truth error is reported and rectified.

    1. Haybob   9 years ago

Defenestration... hmm so the incidents in Prague in 1419 and 1618 were likely the result of LSD induced madness not relgious tension?

WHEN WILL WE FINALLY HAVE THE POLITICAL COURAGE TO STAND UP TO THE SPORTS AND FOOD LOBBIES AND START A NATIONAL DIALOGUE ON COMMON-SENSE SPORTS BAR CONTROL? WAS THIS AN ASSAULT SPORTS BAR?

Viciously stabbing people and trying to eat their faces?

I hate it when weekends start like that--especially at family gatherings.

Incidentally, being at family gatherings makes a lot of people want to stab everybody and eat their faces. I think they've got an LAPD code for it and everything. It's like a 5160.

In California, you just tell them the victims were racists or homophobes or something, and after a 72 hour hold, they give you some Zoloft or something--and send you on your merry way.

    What's the big deal?

The chain of events seems weird to me beginning with the first deputy's arrival.

[Perhaps the timeframe was much shorter than what I'm imagining.]
Austin Harrouff attacks and kills the couple.
A neighbor tries to stop him, and that neighbor gets stabbed/cut/injured as well.
Someone calls 911. Not sure when that happened.

A deputy sheriff arrives. No idea how long it took her to get there or if she was alone.
She hits the killer with the taser, yet it has no effect.
More deputies/police arrive. No idea how long it took them to arrive.
These LEOs punch and kick the attacker.
At some point a dog is loosed on the attacker.
    They finally get him subdued.

This seems like a lot going on. Maybe it all happened in 30-45 seconds.

And the most perplexing thing of all is that they didn't shoot him. Several of us in the office found that to be the most confusing part of the whole story.

Just adding in what else I have learned:

Austin Harrouff attacks and kills the couple.
A neighbor tries to stop him, and that neighbor gets stabbed/cut/injured as well.
Someone calls 911. Not sure when that happened. [The neighbor himself called 911 after he was himself attacked.]

A deputy sheriff arrives. No idea how long it took her to get there or if she was alone.
She hits the killer with the taser, yet it has no effect.
More deputies/police arrive. No idea how long it took them to arrive. [One story reports the sheriff as saying they arrived very soon after the first deputy.]

[Supposedly they were afraid of shooting the victim.]

In addition to checking for the FLACCA, they should be testing for Angel Trumpet. It creates hallucinations and super strength in users. I watched six cops have trouble taking down a 150 pound kid who drank some of the Angel Trumpet tea about 15 years ago. Florida still has a lot of the plants growing everywhere and the regular drug tests won't show it unless they know to look for it. The kid I saw was transported to the hospital and while cuffed to the guerney physically twisted the metal cuffs. Luckily they held, but freaking metal cuffs! Twisted. The drug killed a few dozen teens and disappeared for a while but kids are stupid and think it will happen to the other guy, not them.
