Johnson/Weld Come Out of CNN Town Hall Looking Like "a sensible alternative to the two main options."
The former GOP guvs spend an hour with Anderson Cooper and make themselves stand out by being optimistic realists.
CNN's second "Libertarian Town Hall" featuring LP presidential nominee Gov. Gary Johnson and his running mate Gov. Bill Weld was different—and better—than the first one.
Both Johnson and Weld were calm, optimistic, and straightforward in how they answered questions from moderator Anderson Cooper and various audience members.
It wasn't all soft cheese, of course, as Weld, a two-term Republican governor of Massachussets, said that GOP nominee Donald Trump "has a screw loose." He also dinged Hillary Clinton, of whom he has spoken warmly, for proposing what he said was a tax plan that would raise taxes by $1.1 trillion over a decade.
As he has done in the past, Johnson, a former two-term governor of New Mexico, stumbled when discussing whether or not bakers should be forced by law to cater gay weddings even if they had religious or other objections. All at the same time, he seemed to say that federal anti-discrimination laws covered sexual orientation, that he was against discrimination, and that he didn't want to pass any new laws. Got that? I'm not sure I do.
By the same token, he was clear when it came to the need to cut spending, including defense spending, and the need to balance the budget immediately and go to work on out-of-control debt and regulations. He also talked about how foreign policy and military intervention under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama (and, he pointed out, Hillary Clinton during her time at State) has been a hugely expensive and catastrophic failure. A Johnson administration, he promised, wouldn't be pursuing regime change but it also wouldn't be isolationist, either. He pointed out with evident pride that active military prefer him to either Clinton or Trump. America, he said, "has never been greater, but we have issues" we need to deal with, particularly related to race and policing.
Johnson also quipped that "a wasted vote is a vote for someone you don't believe in" and that America should embrace immigration rather than bemoan it. This, along with his favorable stances toward pot legalization, marriage equality, and abortion rights, are broadly popular among voters. According to Pew Research, fully 59 percent of Americans have positive attitudes toward immigrants, believing that newcomers strengthen the country.
While card-carrying libertarians (do such being exist? probably) were grumbling online over aspects of Johnson's and Weld's answers and positions, their appeal to voters and onlookers who are worn out by the prospects of either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton seems to be getting at least some traction. Consider this summary by Buzzfeed's Rosie Gray:
I think the Libertarian ticket came out of that town hall looking like a sensible alternative to the two main options.

Reason TV interviewed Johnson and Weld a few weeks ago during FreedomFest, the annual libertarian gathering held each July in Las Vegas. Take a look below and go here for a transcript.

Whereas SIV is just clever and insightful and otherwise awesome. Thanks, SIV!!!!

Your mom.
But do they swallow?
My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week.
I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. This is what I do... http://www.trends88.com
Assuming that your take is accurate, that's about as good as anyone can hope for. The two-party dynamic is still powerful, and not going away, but in the past third party candidates have always seemed to come across as crazy extremists. This year, the crazy party is the Republicans and the libertarians look like moderate centrists. And the timing, in the middle of the Trump campaign's current turmoil, couldn't be better.
What we have is a bi-stable system which needs a push our of a local attractor. If we can get enough people to support Johnson over Trump, it will begin to cascade.
And the timing, in the middle of the Trump campaign's current turmoil, couldn't be better.
That's what I was I was thinking today reading all these articles about the supposed unity preached at the convention completely falling apart this week and especially today. There's got to be a tipping point somewhere, where a big chunk of GOP voters will abandon Trump all at once. Whether it's ever reached is the question, but it feels close. A couple big endorsements could do the trick.
Then the LP will have to deal with the "You just want poor people to die!" stuff and nothing tells me the LP will be able to deal with that since their whole strategy has been "we are nicer than the Republicans!"
No, GJ and Weld wouldn't be able to explain their way out of that, at least not at the beginning.
That's why the people around them will.
But Johnson isn't promising to let poor people die. He's promising to balance the budget and cut spending by 20 percent. When Congress is through with him, he would get a 5 percent cut if he's lucky, and more likely a 2 percent increase instead of the usual 5 to 8 percent increase.
No one is going to starve, except maybe a few lobbyists.
The challenge is getting those "stay home" voters to vote libertarian and recognize it as a better option. However a lot of "stay at homers" on both the left and right are too far to either side to bring themselves to vote in the middle with the libertarians.
I've seen stranger things happen in elections, not just in the US but around the world.
Stay positive, my friend.
The problem in this country is our voting procedures. With a ranked-choice system of voting, which is being implemented in some local elections around the nation, or a voting market model espoused by Posner, Johnson/Weld would win the election. In a ranked system that had people rank the four candidates in order of preference, the Clinton/Trump vote would be polarized at 30% each, while the vast majority of votes (I think) would rank Johnson/Weld second, thus ensuring their victory. A description of ranked-choice voting can be found here: http://www.fairvote.org/rcv#rcvbenefits
There's got to be a tipping point somewhere, where a big chunk of GOP voters will abandon Trump all at once.
Possibly, but why in the world would they start supporting a candidate who kisses Hillary Clinton's ass and supports jailing bakers and photogs for not assisting at gay marriages.
Libertarians like to talk about the two parties acting like they own your vote, but the LP is just as guilty of thinking it owns the third party vote.
Because the stay-at-home types generally aren't that concerned about the religious freedom of anti-gay bakers. That isn't their top issue.
We're talking about swing voters here, not disaffected religious conservatives.
Johnson-Weld isn't pursuing the third party vote. Why should they? it's 0.5% of the electorate.
To be fair Gary Johnson did say during the CNN Town Hall that he does not support a baker being forced to do anything special for a gay marriage but would be required to offer items/services that is regularly offered at the store. As a Libertarian I understand the principle of a business selling to whom and only to whom they choose but we cannot be absolutist as Citizens because then we would be living in a society of where our businesses only choose to sell to people of certain religions, skin colors, and other device of traits. I personally do not have enough faith in humanity to be an absolutist. I believe as people we must be tolerant but not necessarily accepting.
"why in the world would they start supporting a candidate who kisses Hillary Clinton's ass and supports jailing bakers and photogs for not assisting at gay marriages"
Maybe because they're smart enough to recognize that there are bigger issues at stake?
You would think so... but I am amazed it has not happened already. Many Trump supporters are Obviously blind with loyalty to him. I think others are maybe blind with loyalty to the GOP. Still I am amazed at the number of #NeverTrump Republicans that bemoan Hillary, bemoan Trump, wish there was a third option. And yet mention Gary Johnson, and suddenly they get defensive and say, He Supports Abortion (never mind he is less supportive of Abortion than Hillary or Trump) He Supports Gay Marriage (Ummm yead, dead and gone, and Trump and Hillary or even Jill Stein are not going to resurrect that one) and He supports Immigration, or alternately He wants to make Drugs legal. Usually followed up by a vote for Libertarians is a wasted vote or Gary Johnson will get 1% of the Vote.
It boggles my mind that people WANT an alternative, but will grasp for straws to shoot down a great alternative to the candidates they so detest.
I do think if Gary can get into the debates that maybe less partisan people will take note, and maybe that will create some movement among dissatisfied Republicans. Short of that, I bet Republican turnout will be exceptionally low.
Weld supports Klansmen who approve of lynching and Japanese internment on SCOTUS.
Weld wants 1000 more FBI agents for domestic surveillance and to wage war on domestic terrorists.
He's for criminalized prostitution.
He's for compromising principles.
Weld winced while wisely keeping his mouth shut when GayJap tepidly defended not outlawing semi-automatic rifles.
GayJay is "woke" on Black Lives Matter.
GayJay is for descheduling marijuana so more research can be done on medical applications. If there's another town hall he'll be calling for drug courts.
Legal prostitution should be left up to the states since you can't catch VD in Nevada (seriously).
Oh my!
Wow! It's like a political candidate will usually not completely be where you are on the issues, so you have to determine what's acceptable to you or not!
GayJay is "woke" on Black Lives Matter.
Well, we can't have THAT.
GayJay is for descheduling marijuana so more research can be done on medical applications. If there's another town hall he'll be calling for drug courts.
Oh no. He doesn't want to immediately legalize all drugs. Oh the compromise, how will I live with it?
Legal prostitution should be left up to the states since you can't catch VD in Nevada (seriously).
Fuck. He's practically a totalitarian. Imagine leaving things up to the states.
I guess I just have to vote for Donald Trump now.
Vote Hillary for freedom?
His BLM answer was politically very astute. He could have gone on the offensive on partisan lines (almost all of the government officials in these inner city environments are Democrats), but that is a loser.
Instead, he said he was awakened by the BLM movement and paying attention.
Completely vague and meaningless. "I hear you!". Maybe he gets a little love. Maybe not. But it deflects any BLM hate, at any rate. And if someone wanted to believe, they could interpret that as meaning he's fully on board with everything the BLM movement stands for.
It was a very Obama-esque moment. A rorsach test of an answer. You could embue it with just about anything you want. Which is a good thing if you are a politician.
Winston, meet SIV. SIV, this is Winston. I'm sure you two have a lot to discuss, and I'm also pretty sure it is of interest to both of you and not even your mothers.
Your whining is really pathetic.
Why can't he practice debates with Weld and at least make sure they are on the same page? Weld's proposal for the FBI to catch lone wolves is nonsense. But I can work with it. Otherwise Weld was strong. Johnson is scared of the debates and doesn't want to be in them. If he was excited he would say, "I'm excited for the opportunity to debunk Hillary and Trump in the debates." Which he probably could, but he'd need to practice. I wonder if someone is telling him, "You don't need no stinkin practice, you're perfect as you are!"
Dude, Weld is horrible. GJ wanting the gov't to force you to bake the cake is bad enough, but to listen to this jackass tell us Breyer the Shitbird is does a good job and Susan freaking Collins is a great senator...ugh...just too much.
Oh, and good grief somebody please explain to GJ that the crimes Hillary is guilty of concerning her handling of classified documents do not require intent?
Better than Clintrump? Yes, but doesn't mean it's not still Goddamned awful.
You know, what if we have him wrong? If he knows he cant win, but he can spoil the election, then isn't possible he's deliberately playing prog lite because he sees Clinton as more dangerous?
He could also be a lizard person or an alien.
It's very bizarre and cringe-worthy when Weld says those things. His fiscal record as governor of Massachusetts is a bright point though.
Marijuana question lady looked like your typical PTA, HOA soccer mom. Someone please think of the children!
She's concerned about marijuana that contains THC.
A bit odd that GJ couldn't stress that LP ideas are about ADULTS making their choices.
Strong arguments can be made for restrictions on minors getting access.
GJ did say kids shouldn't have access to weed. In round 1 of CNN GJ tended to give long-winded answers on points that had nothing to do with the scope of POTUS job, squandering the limited time he had in front of a big audience. This time he kept his answers short, maybe too short, in order to get to more questions.
Cooper kept bringing in Weld to get details and pad time.
Yeah, it was definitely strategic. But she made me want to grab the microphone and answer for him. She was crying out for a nanny state to come along and make sure her and probably more importantly to her - everyone else's precious little snowflake doesn't make any bad choices.
It was the perfect moment for a "Plant your flag here" speech about the meaning of Liberty and the right of adults to make their own choices. Even choices that you disagree with. Even choices that are objectively stupid, like playing the lottery or shooting half-price heroin with that skinny guy with Kaposki's sarcoma all over his face. But that speech is probably not a winner, unfortunately. Even though I'd youtube it 3 times a day for the rest of the year if he went on that rant.
What, no mention of Weld agreeing with the decision to not indict Hillary for the emails?
Or support for more Klansmen on SCOTUS?
You really need a cock in your ass tonight.
SIV is already over there. Where else do you think they got the formulistic shit they are both spouting?
He said he wanted judges like Hugo Black, a Klansman.
And the founding fathers had slaves, and didn't floss, and covered up their baldness with wigs.
Hillary's a witch. A witch I tell ya! And he must be a sorcerer for defending her. I think I seen him casting spells!
They both went very easy on Hillary. She spends!
One step at a time
One step at a time.
Maybe sometimes?
That is the creepiest thing I have even seen. Congratulations.
"They both went very easy on Hillary. She spends!"
Strategically, why would doing anything otherwise matter??
There are two types of people, the people who see what Hillary did and know it's bad, and the people shoving fingers in their ears and blatantly ignoring Hillary's misdeeds.
The people who are not blinding themselves don't NEED to be told that Hillary done fucked up, and don't need to be convinced not to vote for Hillary.
The people avoiding any admission that Clinton may have acted unscrupulously will shut down their brains and their ears the moment Johnson says something bad about her blatant crimes.
So why would you bring attention to Clinton's crimes, strategically, if one type of person doesn't need to be told it and they other people will block out anything you have to say if you bring it up??
I'm so glad that this topic which is so crucial to the future of our republic came up.
LOL who cares about that stuff.
LOL who cares about that stuff.
Democrats and Republicans sure don't.
And it's nice to say we need to cut spending and regulations until you have to cut specific ones and have to deal with the people who will lose their jobs and free shit, the "neo-liberalism is genocide!" people, the unions, rival politicians, the MSM...
There is some tension here.
In the "two-minute Johnson" clips from CNN linked by another commenter, I saw him say he'd sign any bill Congress sent him to abolish a federal department.
Would the EEOC count?
But if he's willing to abolish the EEOC, how would he carry out his plan to expand protected classes under federal "discrimination" law?
Is he one of those zealous budget cutters who of course makes exceptions for this essential program...and that one...and also that one?
Also note that IIRC he wants to keep drugs other than marijuana illegal.
That requires a bit of federal spending, too. Will the DEA be exempt from budget cuts? How much trimming before he violates his pledge to enforce the laws against hard drugs?
Maybe this is a case where he's sound on the budget and genuinely makes only a couple exceptions - EEOC and DEA - to an otherwise zealous budget-cutting program.
Or maybe when it comes to actually cutting programs he'll blink?
And of course so long as he wants to be liked by Democratic leaders he won't be able to tackle the big budget issues.
(I'm not saying the Republicans want to make needed cuts, just that at least he's more willing to criticize their leaders)
Your hypotheticals are pretty hypothetical.
The question is, would Trump or Clinton be a better choice?
Trump has a better chance of building walls with Mexico, Canada, and the Bahamas that are financed by Iran and Russia than Johnson would have of balancing the budget.
He's willing to sell liberty down the river on a live issue (like free association) where liberty is still kicking and gasping for breath, while paying lip service to it on an issue that's long dead.
I am a card-carrying libertarian, but the card is for a local coffee shop and I almost never remember to get it stamped.
At least the coffee is organically grown by the finest orphans money can buy?
Hell no, it's that cat shit coffee.
I'm getting to be such a fucking anglophile that I might just start drinking tea for a change, because coffee is starting to taste the same to me.
Sort of like, "a stained pair of Dockers", when the other options are Zubaz, or leather chaps + a G-string
Um... is the hot guy with his ass hanging out Trump or Hillary? Asking for a friend.
I think his name is sven
I am crying, laughing so hard. You win the thread tonight.
Here's the problem I reckon. When people calculate these two aren't so bad; especially when compared to Trump, to me, it's a total advantage to Hillary. People aren't saying 'hey man, I like Johnson over Hillary'. They're saying, 'At least, Johnson makes some sense and isn't crazy like Trump'.
By "people" I assume you mean "people who have been pickling in MSM deflections of how horrible Hillary is".
I'm not...sure.
/narrows gaze.
The people Johnson appears to be going after are exactly those people.
He's made it abundantly clear he wants nothing to do with the #NeverTrumpers in the GOP.
All the polling I've seen show GJ drawing more away from Hillary than Trump.
Figures, given GJ is basically a Prog-lite Neocon. Further from Trump than Hillary.
And isn't a crook like Clinton.
I'm John Bobbit and Johnson Weld is simply the best!
Nice. I've been trying to come up with a joke like that for weeks.
From what I saw, outside of the foreign policy stuff, Johnson always seems like every question is the first time he's ever thought about the subject. I'm not a big fan of policy by soundbites, but if you're running for president, it seems like you should have an already thought out position on subjects like abortion, gun control, BLM, etc. But whenever he was asked he just kind of rambled a bit in a libertarian-ish direction.
Weld on the other hand seemed like a politician who was used to giving out soundbite sized answers, the problem was that most of them tended towards a more statist direction.
How can he be 'woke' up about BLM? I've been at least aware about this subject since bloody Rodney King; if not before. And I'm FRICKEN CANADIAN.
yes to both. Johnson has a slow first gear. once he gets up to speed he remembers his pitch, but it takes too long. then he ends up throwing stuff in as a bonus.
Weld, he's quicker and more concise, but his answers are statist horseshit.
When the woman asked the BLM question, Johnson did the right thing and was like, "Feels". Said nothing substantial but made right noises.
Weld was like, "Fucking epidemic problems, and we need more govt to fix em" he even said, "I don't care if you're a libertarian"... he says govt can spend its way to fixing black people's problems.
If there were a shittier answer, i don't know what it would be other than, "Hush up, negro, and get me my whip"
Yeah, the BLM question should an easy time to point out that overcriminalization is part of the reason that black people have so many interactions with the cops.
Hell even Weld's complaint about the failure of the school system in this country could have been used to argue in favor of school choice. But nope, let's spend more money.
Seriously - and that's a subject which black voters know and care about (and which scares the fuck out of the urban teacher's unions)
the fact that he whiffed on such an easy question to provide a simple and good-polling answer on School Choice.... its bad enough that he blew the opportunity, but that he further fucked it up with answers which just said, "MORE GOVT STUFF", which is basically the same thing TrumpClinton say.
If Johnson understood basic Libertarianism, he'd be able to generate concise answers on the fly. But he doesn't.
I think he understands it, and even believes in a lot of it, but he wants to appeal to people who don't, without ticking off the LP base too much. It comes across as half-baked.
That pretty much sums it up.
Killing a man with a cake is a helluva thing.
Any way you slice it!
Icing what you did.
ARE WE DONE?
STOP IT.
While Fist is gone, I'm in charge and I will not let you two piss all over this gem of a thread.
You're right, we're all batter than this.
Such frostiness is uncalled for.
It's better than half-baked ideas.
I figured you'd all leaven it alone, xanthan here you all guar still pectin away at it.

Anytime something is happening with Gary Johnson, I eagerly look forward to reading how it went in the unique universe that seems to exist only in this comment section.
Gary who?
Indiana.
Global warming predictions reach an alarming crescendo.
It's an existential crisis. It might be a degree or two warmer before we die, and the sea level could be a foot higher.
Gillespie didn't point this out, but GJ talked out the pragmatic side of LP principles:
1. The government will try what it can to protect its citizens, but cannot prevent ALL attacks
2. The government cannot provide equality, but equal opportunity is achievable.
Nonetheless, it is still up to the people to decide if they prefer the usual empty promises or a dose of reality.
I was impressed by that, especially the first. It's not a popular thing to say on TV.
People are going to die no matter what government does.
More government spending won't give us immortality?
It depends on who is doing the spending because I promise you, I will make spending great again.

Weld looks like JFK next to Trump and Clinton. If he were the top of the ticket, centrist voters would have to think twice about wasting their votes on Trump or Clinton. I don't think Gary Johnson inspires the same confidence, but he's still the best choice by far.
As a card-carrying, taking-orders-from-customers libertarian let me assure you that a wasted vote is one that does not repeal bad laws and lower taxes. Every vote cast for an LP platform candidate unequivocally repeals bad laws even if our volunteer does not get saddled with a boring government job. Wasting a vote on looter party politicians only encourages more looting--something there is no shortage of already.
If you live in California where the electoral vote is owned by the (D)'s your vote doesn't matter. . . . The only "statement" one can make to the Karl Roves of the world is with Party registration. And it ain't gonna' be Republican.
i get Paid Over ?80 per hour working from home with 2 kids at house. I never thought I would be able to do it but my best friend earns over ?9185 a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless.
Heres what I've been doing,......... http://www.CareerPlus90.com
"their appeal to voters and onlookers who are worn out by the prospects of either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton seems to be getting at least some traction."
Well clearly the electorate hungers for a squishy, middle of the road Republican. I mean, look at the success of Mitt and Jeb. Er, I meant... Never mind.
As a Libertarian, I am concerned that the purist of the movement detract from the ability to grow the party and complicate the ability to govern. Just as the far right and far left have hijacked the other parties, my concern continue to be that the purist, derail the momentum that we are finally achieving. If I could name a political party to most suits my own personal philosophy, I would form the Colloidal Libertarian Party. To reflect the Libertarian nature of the party, yet also recognize that being a reasonable human being, I am "allowed" to take the best of multiple systems of government and form our own "...more perfect union". The only litmus test I see applicable to a Libertarian is the desire that Government be agnostic. We go around the world demanding secular governments, yet at home, we always talk about the country being founded upon Christian beliefs. While I myself am a church going Christian, my religion is my own personal choice, and I have no real or perceived right to demand that anyone else view life as I do.
Yes, a-hole, there are card-carrying Libertarians - I'll probably shred mine. After straight-ticket voting Libertarian for over 20 years, I will not be voting for either of these morons. They are recycled, has-been Republicans. The Libertarian party should be embarrassed being represented by these baffoons.
nice post thanks admin http://www.xenderforpcfreedownload.com/
And also bullied. And thread corpse-fuckers. But largely bullies, internet ones.
To be fair, it's hard to win an election for dog catcher running as an anarchist.
Hear, hear!
Good point.
